Quicktime Movies that Open in Safari eat up hard drive space. Howto Delete?

I have a Mac Book Pro. The hard drive space is minimal as you probably know. Whenever I open up a Quicktime Movie in Safari the movie will open in a new Safari window. Some of the movies are rather large trailers and what not. I notice that my hard drive space goes down with each movie I open. Where are these movies saved? How do i clear up this space after i'm done watching? I hate needing to delete other stuff to open up quicktime movies.

If you've set the cache to 100 MB's that all QuickTime will use.
You're going to have much bigger issues with such little free space on your drive. Why not buy a cheap external drive and move large folders like Music, Movies and Pictures to it.
iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie can all store their files on external drives.

Hi to all. I do have a problem with my apple Tv. I can't play the HD movies that I have in my external hard drive which is connenected to my macbook pro. Some of them don't play at all and it's switching off the XBMC, and some of them are just starting for a few seconds and then is getting paused trying to buffering for a long time. The simple avi movies are playing with fewer stops for buffering. What is the problem? Can you help me?

  • Mail eats up hard drive space

My wife is using an iMac G4 (the first of the flatscreen types), and generally only uses Mail. Safari, iPhoto, and iTunes on it. It has an 80 Gig hard drive. In the past month, I have had to delete more than 20 Gig of space on the hard drive because something was eating up hard drive space.
Today, I was able to narrow it down to the Mail application. When no apps other than the finder were running, the hard drive stayed at a constant remaining size. With Mail running, I found that the hard drive was losing about 10 meg every thirty seconds, even when there were no new messages to be received. In one hour, the hard drive lost more than 2 Gig of available space.
I have performed a search for all files and folders on the hard drive that have 'Mail' in the name, but found nothing that could use up as much space as has been lost on the hard drive recently. Last week, we deleted all messages that were more than 100 Meg in size, but that didn't help much.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be doing this?

Mail just reports normal retrieving and sending of messages through the two accounts, although it did briefly try to sync with .mac until realizing that that account isn't on this machine anymore.
The following processes are there, too:
    pmTool
    mdimport
    VShieldCheck
    mds
    hpdot4d
    SystemEvents
    EyeTV Helper
    SystemUIServer
    WindowServer
    update
    syslogd
    kernel_task
    and, of course, Activity Monitor.
(some of these would appear and reappear occasionally)
Since my original post, I have deleted all of the non-English languages from Mail, and I also turned off the automatic checking of the servers for new messages. Although that did free up more than 22 gig of space, it's still being reduced fairly quickly. (Since I started typing this paragraph, the hard drive has lost .03 gig of free space, and I'm a pretty fast typist...)

  • Quicktime .mov files opens up Safari during video

I have this .mov quicktime file, i can watch it but every few seconds and when it first opens up safari starts up and each time it creats a new window. Is there any way i can stop this?

Steven, I'd suggest you try posting in the QuickTime for Mac forum. You'll be more likely to get help there than you will here in the QuickTime for Windows forum.
    Good luck.

  • How I can move my GB songs to a CD so I can free up hard drive space?

Whenever I attempt to move a GB song onto a CD (to free up hard drive space) and delete the song from the GB folder, I'm not able to open up the song. Any advice?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Thank you for your advice.
Ultimately you are correct about the CD-R not being reusable once the file is burned.
Presently I've alleviated that by not burning the CD-R. However, the downside is that I will not be able to remove the CD-R from the drive until I either burn the songs to the CD-R, or move the songs back onto the hard drive.
Perhaps a CD-RW may allow one to move files back and forth in the same manner that floppy disks do (though a GarageBand file obviously would be much too large to store on a floppy). This may be a temporary "poor person's" solution to free up hard drive space until one can afford a zip drive or a larger Mac.
Thank you again for your tip.
    Cheers,
    John

    What arrow?
Have you tried opening the file in FCP?
If there is no error message and it will not play in QT7, it is quite possible the file is corrupted. You will need to go back to the original project and re-export the file.

  • How do you create a clickable QT movie that opens a URL in a browser

    Hi,
I'd like to create a stand-alone, downloadable QuickTime movie that -- when you click on it -- opens up a Web page in the viewer's web browser.
I just read this article about HREF tracks, but I didn't find it to be specific enough to be much help to me.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/hreftracks.html
Does anyone have a step-by-step that will get this done for me?
Is using Automator the way to go? Can anyone tell me how to use that?
    thanks,

I've been watching this thread, hoping for an answer. Too bad you guys can't figure it out. Perhaps I can add another piece to the puzzle...
I have used peer-to-peer software (Acquisition) to download files from "shared" networks. (Yes, it violates copyrights, and with the recent spate of OS X "Trojan", is risky. Mea culpa. I have ceased this behavior.)
Sometimes, however, a search will provide a boatload of ".mov" files in the 1-3mb size range. (The search term "Jenna" works wonderfully.) If you download one of them, and either look at it in Column View-Preview or actually open the file, (it is set to "Autoplay on opening"), about 1/3 of the way into the file, your default browser will open to a URL which contains "adult" content.
I have opened one of these files using TextEdit, and by searching for "http" can find the "call" (if you will) for the website. However, it is embedded in "gobbledygook" which I can't understand. HexEditor fares no better.
When you open the file as a movie, however, and look Window-Show Movie Properties, you find three tracks: Audio, Video, and Flash. If you extract the Flash track and play it alone, it "calls" the URL and the website opens. The Video track does not do this.
I don't know what to do with this information, maybe you others can use it to figure something out.
EDIT: I opened the Flash Track with TextEdit. It's too long to post in this message, but not too long for a new post. If it'll help, I can reply again.

  • Editing QuickTime movies that are 'Save-Disabled'.

Has anyone been able to extract audio / video from a compressed QuickTime movie that has 'Disable Save' enabled?
I lost the raw .avi movies for several videos, and, with the latest Purevoice/QT7.3 issues, I am in need of re-compressing those QuickTime movies.
Any ideas / suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

  • How do I delete Photo Stream photos that are taking up hard drive space in my Masters folder, but not actually appearing in any event, or on the interface at all?

A couple months ago, I activated photo stream using my apple ID. I was under the impression that all the photos uploaded to my photo stream would only use server space on icloud and wouldn't actually utilize disk space, or at the most, the option was available to only download specific photos to my hard drive. My hope was that I could upload the photos to a specific drive, and view the uploaded thumbs or low-res comps on any device as a reference.
    This is not the case.
What I have found is that iphoto has been automatically downloading any and all photos uploaded to my photo stream. Not just the thumbnails, the entire thumbnail + all resolutions. I shoot RAW photos so in my case, the original averages about 15-25MB per photo.
I have been uploading directly to an iphoto library on an external hard drive specifically designated for handling all my RAW high-res images.
What has been happening is all those RAW files are also being uploaded directly to my iphoto library on my iMac and eating up memory which I cannot reclaim, even after deactivating my Photo Stream in preferences. We're talking almost 100 GB of memory is tied up right now.
I don't want to just go in and start deleting files and folders in my Masters folder, since I have heard this will break iphoto, but the photos in my photostream do not show up in any event and I need to reclaim the hard drive space.
How can I safely delete them?

If the files are loose inside the iPhoto library package here's one way to get them out:
1 - open your library, select all of the photos in the library and add a unique keyword, XXXX,  to all of them.
2 - Rebuild the library with  iPhoto Library Manager  as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
3 - open the library, create a smart album with the criterial "Keyword is not XXXX".
4 - the smart album will include those photos that were not visible in your original library. Select them and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move them to the iPhoto Trash bin.
5 - empty the iPhoto Trash bin via the iPhoto ➙ Empty iPhoto Trash Bin menu option.
6 - empty the Trash bin in the Dock to remove the files from your hard drive completely.
Be sure to read Note 1 above.  You can use the new library without your books, slideshow, etc. and it will not  contain those errant files.  Of course delete the original library if the new one is satisfactory.

  • How can i move my Iphoto library to an external hard drive?

How do I move my Iphoto library to an external hard drive?

    Here's a worflow for that:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using  iPhoto Library Manager

  • How do I Play videos from external hard drive on Apple TV2?  Can I just move the iTunes Library to the External Hard Drive?

I have several HD videos stored on an external hard drive and would like to bring them into iTunes and play them via iTunes on my Apple TV2, but I am not sure how to go about it.  I don't want to store the movies on my iMac hard drive because it would eat up to much space...so do I just move the iTunes Library to the external hard drive?  And, if so...will the Apple TV2 find the iTunes Library on the external hard drive?  Thanks for any help anyone can suggest.

iTunes content on an external drive isn't a problem.
The simplest method is to just move your library to an external drive.
If you wanted to keep just movies on an external drive, that's a little more difficult. You'd need to put the movies where you want them to reside on the external drive and add drag and drop them onto iTunes while holding down the option key. Obviously any movies already in iTunes would need moving from their current location and removing from iTunes first.

  • How to open old itunes on external hard drive

    Hi Guys
Basically my old laptop died and I have taken out the hard drive and plugged it in to my new laptop.
I have ITunes installed on my new laptop.
I want to be able to open my old iTunes library that is still on my old hard drive.
When I find the application in program files it says install iTunes. So I installed iTunes but whenever I press it again it just opens up the blank new library.
The iTunes library on my old hard drive is unconsolidated and unorganised.
I need to open it from the hard drive so I can move it to my new laptop.
    Please help ASAP!

Press and hold down shift as you launch iTunes.
Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library.
Click choose and browse to the iTunes folder on the drive.
Open the iTunes Library.itl file inside.
In some cases you may need to Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows in order for the library to work correctly on the new computer.

    What's eating it up?

    WORD TO THE WISE
the OmniDiskSweeper was a very helpful download, because it laid out the HD and all the files on it in a "largest to smallest" fashion. When I did this I found that I had an inordinate amount of memory being taken up in my Mail Data folder, this did not make much sense so when I dug deeper I found that a 59MB scanned file that I had emailed 3 weeks ago had not been delivered, so the computer was retrying every minute and saving the history of what it was doing, so it was saving the 59MB file as well as the log about the 59MB file and hence for the last 3 weeks it's been chewing away at HD space recording the activity of the undeliverable file.
I deleted the Data record folders and removed the yahoo account from My Mail and reinstalled it with proper IMAP information and the HD is secure and holding at 331GB of free space. Like it ought to be.
I love the fact that if something very strange is happpening on your MAC there is a REASON....find it and fix it, and move on. In the PC world you would reboot 20 times, call some guy in India who will ony try to sell you a new subscription or warranty for $99 and never solve anything.
I am at rest once more, thanks for the tip

  • Eats up too much external hard drive space

I just turned on TM, and for no reason that I can think of, it's doing a backup that is eating up 34GB of external hard drive space. Here are my questions.
    1. Why might this be happening?
    2. What happens when external hard drive is full. What's the default move that it will make?
    3. How can I reduce the files that TM looks to back up. I need only ONE copy of my movies, for example. But I need frequent backups of my mail files. And for sure I need frequent backups of my doc folder.
    4. If I rent a movie on iTunes, will it be saved to external HD?
    Thanks...

I'm assuming the 34GB you mentioned is not part of the initial backup. If on an hourly backup it really is backing up 34 GB, then there is/are huge file(s) involved. Are you using Parallels or some other virtual operating system? These can use one huge file to store everything. Make one small change to it and the whole file is backed up. Same thing with Entourage or Outlook. These store all emails in one file. Add or delete one email and the entire file (which could be huge) is backed up.
You mention that you need only ONE copy of your movies. Well, TM does not make multiple backups if a file never changes. TM only backs up new files or those that have changed.
