QUICKTIME synth pitch bend range in LOGIC PRO

i try to set the pitch bend range for QUICKTIME in logic when making GM midi file. I setup the CC100 CC 101 CC 6 , but QUICKTIME synths dose not react the pitch bend range setting , still the 2 semitone range .
this is what i set in message window:
CC 101 (RPN MSB) 0
CC 100 (RPN LSB) 0
CC 6 (DataEnt MSB) 12
But when I export the midi file with my CC 101 ,CC 100 , CC 6 setting , I play it by QUICKTIME , it 's OK
So anybody here how what wrong with this ?
Thanks !!

i want to change the pitch bend range so that it goes really high.
There is no such thing. Logic only knows about the whole 14-bit pitch bend value range. It has no idea what parameters or instruments that data is controlling.
So, for instance, if you are using the ES2, it's in this that you set the pitch bend range (ie, make the whole 14-bit pitch wheel data correspond to +/- 2 semitones, or +/- 2 octaves, or whatever.
So it's a function of the instrument you are using, not Logic.
Look at the pitch bend range parameter in whatever instrument you are using.

  • Can I alter pitch bend range via plugin for synths that default to  /- 2 semitones?

I am looking for a way to change the pitch bend range to +/- 12 for an AU instrument that does not have the capability to do so within its own settings.  Is there some sort of plug-in I can run "after the fact" and assign to that channel to allow for this type of bend range?
    Thanks!

It only seems to go a minor 3rd, oddly.

Here's a link to the synth page.  I've been back and forth with their support team as well.  They originally thought I wanted to do a bend event after the fact like in Logic.   See below for our exchange.
    Neil,
Let me double check. I do not believe it is possible, but I will make sure and let you know.
    Thank you
    Hi Jeff,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
I'm actually looking to alter the range prior to recording so that the patch can be properly used with a new type of polyphonic keyboard we recently acquired at our school called a Seaboard.
In order for notes to bend and glissando properly, the pitch bend range for performance must be set at +/- 12 semitones for the start (not the usually 2).  Most of the built in synths in Logic and Mainstage allow for this modification, so I was hoping to be able to make that change for NSK as well.
Because the keyboard bends notes directly from the keys, not a pitch wheel, that range is necessary for it to function properly with a particular synth.
    Thanks again!
    Neil

  • Need help on how enlarge the pitch bend range....

I'd like to know if there is any way to increase the pitch bend automation range, as I find its small range (0-120 or whatever it is) unsatisfactory for the dramatic beat drops I wish to create.

The actual range of pitchbend is -8192 to + 8192, it's just scaled down for viewing and editing purposes. But, that range is meaningless, what it actually does is completely dependent on how the receiving instrument is configured.
Generally you can set the pitchbend range on an instrument from -1 octave to +1 octave (in some cases + 3 octaves), in semitones. The 16,384 steps are divided up over that set range. If you set the range to 0, well, nothing happens. If you set the range to + and - 1 or 2 semitones, the 16.384 steps are distributed over that range, so the pitch drop over the full range will indeed not be too dramatic, though very smooth. If you set the instrument to + or - 1 octave or more, things get more 'dramatic'. So the limits of pitchbending are completely determined by the set range (if it has any!) of the receiving instrument(s).

  • What EXACTLY does q-range in logic pro do?

I read the manual and it said that it is "A very musical quantization strategy that requires a certain amount of technical musical prowess. Q-Range is ideal for recordings that already have the right groove but are too hurried or laid back in places. It allows you to retain the original feel, but positions the rhythmic center precisely in the groove. A value of 0 means that every note or transient marker is quantized. If you enter negative Q-Range values, only notes or transient markers that fall outside the set range are moved to ideal quantization grid positions, whereas those closer to an ideal position remain unquantized. This moves the most poorly played notes or transient markers—those outside the range—to perfect timing positions on the quantization grid, or at least moves them toward these positions, depending on the Q-Strength setting." Can someone tell me the values that are meant by "range" and why when i set a value in both the negative and positive range, it seems to move notes at the same exact positions to different places?

I can get you a bit closer, no pun intended.
The range # is in ticks.  Looky here:
The blue D is 74 ticks shy of the quarter note, the red Bflat on the 2.3 line is 20 ticks past the line.  I set the quantize grid to 1/8 because there are a couple notes on the grid there (the two C's).  Everything pops into strict quantize.  As the q-range is dragged down, when the value = the number of ticks that the original note is off the grid that note is no longer quantized.  So when I set the range to -21 the red note doesn't quantize any more.  As I continue, more of the notes fall off the grid and back to the location you see above.  The blue note stays on the grid until I get to -74.  Incidentally, if you go slow you will see that at certain values the display changes from -60 to 1/64, letting you know the musical equivalent of the tick values.
As you go positive, you will see that a value of 1 kicks everybody off the grid, and then teases them in as you dial in their tick values.  With positive values, however, there seems to be a 'relativity' to the relationships between the notes.  In my above pic, the orange Bflat that is roughly at the same time as the blue note is 40 ticks shy.  At a range of 10 it moves 2 ticks further away, and at a range of 20 it is 7 ticks closer.  At a range of 40 it is 15 ticks shy, and at 41 it is on the grid.  When I get to a range of 75, the blue note is on the grid and the orange note above it is 32 ticks past.  There seems to be some relationships that affect the quantization (like it averages all the quarter notes and splits the differences, then looks at notes that are roughly at the same time and splits the difference again) but the manual doesn't really explain how that works.
Make a region and by holding cntrl+shift you can move notes by the tick value.  Move some around and then play with the Q-range to see it in action.  In the piano roll you can go View>Event float and a floating window will appear that has the info you want to monitor.  Just select the note in the piano roll that you want to see the info for.  You can also open an event list to see the info on all the notes at once.

  • Pitch Bend in Logic

Can somebody tell me how the Pitch Bend controller works in Logic. It´s kinda strange. I´ll test a Midi note on middle C, and lets say i set the bend range on (ES2) to 24 semitones up and down.
    When i make a bend automation from 0, and up to + 24, in the Midi Draw editor. The note pitch ends on D4 rather then C5 and in order to get it up on the correct pitch, i have to bump it up to + 31. Another example;
If i want to go from C2, and down an octave to C1. This time i set the bend range on my instrument to 12 semitones, up and down. in order to go down an octave, i have to set the Pitch Bend Control to - 63, and not - 12 semitones from the zero line.
Is it possible to adjust the pitch bend control to go from one semitone up or down by by 1 value in the Midi Draw editor?
If somebody can help me, i would be very grateful.. because this pitch bend control in Logic drives me crazy.

Pitch bend is a different animal than standard MIDI values.
In the Midi Spec, pitch bend has 16,384 possible variation values. (14-bit)
MIDI Draw uses a 0  to 127 scale (+/- 63 with 0 being the median)  the numbers do not directly represent pitch bend steps but interact with the synth's (ES2) pitch bend setting. What's different about the ES2 is that is has both PB Up and Down settings, most synths just have one setting, the up/down parameters can confuse things even more.
    Your example:
"If I want to go from C2, and down an octave to C1. This time i set the bend range on my instrument to 12 semitones, up and down. in order to go down an octave, i have to set the Pitch Bend Control to - 63, and not - 12 semitones from the zero line."
Yes, this is exactly correct... because it's not semitones you're dealing with. Using your example with the instrument set to -12 semitones up/down if I want to bend to G2 I will use the MIDI Draw number on 31 or 32. What you have to do is correlate the +63/-63 with the bend +/- setting on your synth.
I've never used MIDI draw as I have synths with pitch bend wheel but I'm guessing Logic fills the in-between 14-bit pitch bend values so that MIDI draw adjustment appear to be smooth and not an abrupt change from one pitch to another.

  • Pitch bend lag when using internal quicktime synth.

I want to do a pitch bend at the end of a midi note in Logic 8. When i go to listen back in logic it does the pitch bend at the beginning of the next note. I decide to export the project as a midi file and open it in quicktime player. It plays the bend properly. I guess that's cool however I don't want to have to export it to a midi file every time i want to hear how the finished product will sound. Especially if I need to fine tune the pitch-bend.
I've tried messing around in the automation properties and sample accurate automation under audio tab and don't hear any change.
In the environment I have a 16 channel GM instrument patched into the internal quicktime synth.
    Thanks

Did you do the usual stuff, such as reset PRAM?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
There are some sound settings in PRAM, although I think it's only for sound output.
Also, as a test, I would create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account (do not use Fast User Switching). In the new account, try recording something using QuickTime, and note if this problem recurs. If it does not, you have eliminated a few possible causes, such as a problem with the overall system installation or a hardware issue, and isolated the problem to something in your normal user account.

  • Controlling Logic Pro pitch bend

Okay I just got Logic Pro 9 and haven't even dived into the manual yet but I hope someone can step me through this nonetheless. How do I control the pitch bend sound for the software guitar? It has this unappealing country twang (no offense to country fans) every time I hit the pitch bend button on my midi and it's driving me batty. I have to get rid of it. Can someone please guide me through changing this? I'm looking for a pitch bend setting similar to the one in garageband, more of a rock feel, or better. Anything but this.
Thank you, for the love of God, thank you.

  • Logic pro notes pitch not right

hi, I've had Logic pro 9 for over a year and i'm having an issue now with certain notes playing flat on playback and bounce..Sometimes whole sections of notes not playing correctly pitch wise...help (they were playing right at first ). I checked to make sure nothing had changed and the notes are still in their correct position

Is the pitch deviation consistent (ie same notes out of tune by the same amount every time)? If so, there's probably some pitch bend data somewhere it shouldn't be. You'll just have to go through the regions methodically with the Hyper Editor displaying pitch bend.
On the other hand, if it happens randomly, maybe the pitch wheel on your master keyboard or control surface is faulty, and is sending out unwanted MIDI data?

  • Pitch bend in Mainstage synths using GI-20

I am using Mainstage live for my bass rig. I have a Roland GI-20 triggering synths in it. What settings do I need to change in Mainstage to allow me to bend a string and the note to actually bend and not trigger another note?

    Hi
This issue is primarily related to the GI20 itself. You need to set the Bend Range and the "Chromatic Type" on teh GI
See page 23 & 24 of the GI manual for all the info (and note that the majority of MS/Logic patches are set to a bend range of 2 semitones, so unless you want do do a boatload of re-programming, you will need to set the Bend Range on the GI to match)

  • Logic audio pitch bend

I have an M-audio KeyRig 49 and the pitch bend wheel is not working in Logic Pro.  Is there a setting in Logic that will help it recognize the KeyRig 49 pitch wheel?  I tried Preferences > Control Surfaces > Controller Assignments and "learn" mode but that really messed it up more.
    thanks for any help

I tried Preferences > Control Surfaces > Controller Assignments and "learn" mode but that really messed it up more.
This is the reason for the PB disappearing I guess. When you use the Controller assignment (CA) “learn” or the key-command dialog and learn any external midi message then Logic Physical input blocks that message and bypasses it directly to the Controller Assignments or the key-command assignments.
To fix that you have to find and delete the “learned” string in CA which gets the PB or to (backup and trash) the Logic control surfaces file. Try dragging the Logic Control Surface preference file to your desktop and restarting Logic:

  • Editing pitch bend wheel's range

I can't figure out for the life of me how to modify the range of the pitch bend wheel on an Edirol (Roland) PCR-30 MIDI keyboard. It's set at at a range of 2 semi-tones and I would like to change it to an octave or even two. The only instruction I can find in the manual refers to a complicated 27-step routine using buttons that don't exist on the PCR-30 (such as SysEx and numeric keys).
Granted this is a basic MIDI rig, but the pitch bend ought to be user-definable. Any PCR-30 vets know the secret?

The pitch bend is set in GarageBand, and is normally limited to 2 semitones. There is a way to increase this, but note that it does not work on GB instruments, only on Soundfonts and QuickTime Instruments.
I can't advise about your particular keyboard: most keyboards have some way of sending CC messages: for example my Evolution has a button marked 'Wheel Assign', and the M-Audio Keystations can use note keys in shifted mode as number keys. You need to see if you can find an equivalent. You then need to send CC128.
Now if you hold down a note and move the pitch bend to its maximum, if you then move the modulation wheel you will hear the pitch of the bent note change and you can set it to anything you want.
When you move to another track you may still get the same increased pitch and you may have to reset it if that's not what you want.
GarageBand will remember this instruction for that track during the session, but once you quit it will revert to 2 semitones and you will have to go through the process again - it will then work on the existing notes as before.
It's a bit of a kludge because GB was never designed to allow for this in the first pace.

  • In logic pro 7 how do I stop low volume high pitched squeal

Im using logic pro 7 with moto hd896 firewire. music will play thru itunes but won't thru logic.a message error while trying to sync audio and midi.

I don't use Logic yet, but I will. Sounds like a clocking error. Have you tried clocking to one source, and then clocking to the other and comparing the results? Those high-pitched noises are probably digital noise like what I hear on my phone when my cellphone is on too, and my computer monitor is 3' away. Did someone call your computer by telephone while you worked? Is something on?
Otherwise, how many times have you copied your session and edited the copy? after compressing something? after dithering?
Also, when a USB interface is hooked up too, and I'm recording thru Channel 2, lets say, and I set the input to "stereo", I get noise like you're talking about from the other unused channel. Try checking your input selection.

  • User Preset Data Base for Logic Pro's instruments - Synths, etc

I realize Logic Pro 9 comes with more instrument presets than any one person can audition in a single day, or a week or month for that matter. But I am looking for the data base where other users have shared their own settings. Line 6 has one for Pod Farm and despite their 1000 presets, I found what other users did to be super amazing. Back to Logic Pro, I searched last year for a Theremin sample and someone created it in one of Logic's synths and posted it.
I can't imagine I'm the first person to ask this questions. I must not be searching correctly. Please help.

  • Is it possible to have the synthesizer interfaces for the included LOGIC PRO synths in MainsStage as a standalone?

I recently purchased MainStage as they included the instruments from Logic Pro and In the help files it shows the LOGIC synths with the nice GUIs for each included synth; but it seems you have to recreate all of the parameter controls for each synth if using only MainStage as I can not find how to view the synthesizer interfaces.  Does anyone know if this is the case or is there a way to tweak the synths using the nice already layed-out interfaces that are in Logic?

The amount of RAM is not dependant on the operating system. It is all about the model of you Mac.
10.6.8 is the version of OS X that is installed on your system. It has no real baring on the amount of RAM that CAN be installed.
Personally I have never had good luck with Corsair RAM. I have always had good luck with Crucial and Kingston.
