Quicktime Won't Open

About a month ago I reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2. Instead of installing Quicktime, I installed the Quicktime Alternative which has worked for me in the past. I could never open .mov files in firefox or media player classic. I finally got fed up with it and installed quicktime 7.1.3. The first problem that I noticed was the the .mov files weren't associated withe the quicktime program. The files still wouldn't play; they would act like there were about to by showing the hourglass, but nothing happened. I can't even open the quicktime player. the quicktime tray icon is next to the clock. When i rightclick that icon and go to preferences and click on the filetype tab i get this error message:"An exception occurred while trying to run"Shell32.dll,Controll_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\Quicktime\QTSystem\Quicktime.cpl""". So that leads me to believe that is some sort of problem between quicktime and my OS. I also tried to unistall then reinstall. The uninstaller faild and gave an error message. I also cannot open Adobe Premiere because it needs quicktime. I just rebooted and a message popped up saying the QTInfo Application encoutered a problem and needed to close. Here is the error signiture:
AppName: qtinfo.exe AppVer: 7.1.3.100 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0000b77d
Do you have any ideas why it is acting this way and do you have any ideas how to fix it?
Thank you very much
-Edit-
I also tried a repair install. that finished and it made quicktime associate itself with .mov files, but the player still won't open. If i close the task icon i can't reopen it without rebooting. so QTTask.exe wont open either except when XP boots.

yes i installed ace mega codec pack v. 6.3.911.0
that could well be our problem.
the issues arise when the Codec Packs have installed earlier versions of the QT codecs (and in some cases, the qttask.exe background process) than appear in the version of QT that you've installed.
typically, this will hit folks after an itunes upgrade, when the version of itunes they have upgraded to requires a higher version of QuickTime, with different versions of the codecs. for some more discussions of the various issues i've seen with that, see:
http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=3367782
i always find it a bit difficult tracking down info on the ACE packs on line ... can you determine what version of the QT codecs your pack installed on your PC?

Quicktime won't open for me. It was fine about a year ago. Not coming up in activity monitor. What do I do to fix this?
Would appreciate any help as I am not particularly computer savvy.

Greyed imaged in the Import dialog box mean you have already imported the photos into Lightroom, so there is no need and no benefit to importing them a second time.
Just go to the Library module, search for the desired photos, and resume working on these photos.

    Hello Niebby,
According to the description of the issue provided looks like some change has been done in your system. Most probably a change in the installed codecs. I would suggest you to check whether the required codecs are installed under the folder "/Library/QuickTime".
If reinstallation is needed you can check this post "QucikTime Codecs Installation" to get some details about how to proceed.

  • Quicktime won't open with iPhoto

I have several small movies downloaded into iPhoto. I double click on them and nothing happens...they won't open Quicktime. All my software is fully updated so I don't have a clue what to do next. I know I can download them again to imagecapture and they play. I'd like to see them open in iPhoto. Thanks

iMovie is a cool app - have fun with it; while you're editing your movies, also learn about iDVD which would be the final step when creating movies: it has really cool themes (the screen you'll see when the DVD first starts playing in the DVD player).
As for stills: yes, you can get a still (as simple as taking a screen shot while pausing the movie), but be warned: the quality will not be anything worthwhile. I've tried it; the reason for the quality loss is the fact that you're looking at a movie file format; getting a still will render it into (most likely) a .jpg format and there will be significant loss of quality.
And, the previous version of Quicktime should be on your install disk (it's Quicktime 7) and it'll be placed in your Applications -> Utilities folder during the install.
Oops - is your profile correct? You're showing 10.5.x (Leopard) and the above notes are for Snow Leopard.
Edit: and here is the link to a direct download (IF you have Snow Leopard):

  • Quicktime won't open mpg files

I am trying to create a DVD with chapters/scenes from a single .avi file that won't open in Quicktime (nor iDVD nor iMovie).  It's the basic QT, not pro.  I can convert the .avi file to .mpg (using Burn or other tools), but the resulting file (.mpg) won't open in Quicktime either.  Seems if it won't open in Quicktime, it won't open in iDVD or iMovie, where I'd hoped to include chapter markers and menus.
Since this was created by Burn on my Macbook, I'd expect the resulting .mpg file to be readily useable by Qucktime, but it isn't.  Can someone first explain why QT won't open the file (VLC will open it), and second what other approach I might use?
    Thanks!

OK, again, I'm not using the avi file, but the mpg that was created by Burn from the avi file, so I wonder if the original is so "muxed up" as it might seem.  No mpg inside of an avi, if I understand you both correctly.  The original AVI is thus far MIA though I do think I burned it to a data disc.
Having the original AVI would let see what compression codecs were used to create it, how compressed the video was, see the encoded dimensions/display dimensions if PAR encoded, and give us some idea as to how much visual quality may have been lost in transcoding the AVI to MPG, as well as, save you one level re-compression if you were then able to start your work flow with the original source file. Too bad you can't find it.
"Muxed" in the case of your MPEG2/MP3 MPG file refers to the fact that the audio and video content is broken into blocks of video data which are interspersed with blocks of audio data in a single data stream to provide synchronizarion. QT files, on the other hand, contain up to 99 tracks of audio, video, and/or other forms of data the playback of which are all sybchronized to an external clocking system and is the main reason your MPG file is not natively QT compatible,
To play MPEG-2 content, whether in an elementary or a multiplexed stream, in a QT based application, you must first purchase and install the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20). Even then, for any of the unsupported audio compression formats you would need a secondary application like MPEG Streamclip (free) to bridge the spatial to temporal synchronization problem to make it compatible Apple QT-based applications like QT, iMovie, GarageBand, iDVD, etc. So, if you plan to use the MPG file as your source file, you will either have to purchase the MPEG-2 component or use a third-party application work flow.
All that said, I think I'm understanding how to go about this now.  Oddly, I do have Perian installed (I think because I once had a similar problem and had hoped it would help) and it's up to date.  It does not seem to fix my problems though.
This is why you need to pay attention to the actual codecs used in the AVI file and ensure that you have removed any third-party components which may conflict with the Perian component package as detailed on the support page of the Perian web site.
I'm using this file to try to learn a little about iDVD and iMovie (after all these years of using Macs!), so I had hoped to take these first steps without buying a commercial product.  I don't mind spinning my wheels trying different workflows so long as I'm learning and have options.  Garageband is an interesting idea as I had no idea it would handle video files.  Perhaps Audacity would also do the trick?  I don't have any need of creating markers at any particular points in the file, just something to ease the process of moving from one place to another in the video.  Markers at an even time interval would be fine, and I'd love to create a menu that allows navigation, though even that isn't crucial.
To learn more about iDVD, use help file, view the tutorials, and visit the iDVD forum. However, before you can do anything in iDVD, you will have to convert your MPEG2/MP3 MPG file to a QT compatible compression format. On my system, I would simply open the MPG file in MPEG Streamclip (which already has the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component installed) and convert the MPEG-2 video to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) and the MP3 audio to Uncompressed audio. The resulting MOV file will then import to any Apple QT-based edit/conversion application on your computer (assuming the source file and your software is in proper working order).
I may end up trying Toast as I've considered it in the past and my needs aren't very sophisticated.  But being largely without work and mostly self-employed these last two years has made me a bit of a miser...
Toast should save you the cost of the MPEG-2 Playabck component but does cost much more than the $20 component. I am still using Titanium Toast 10 Pro but it may be aout time to upgrade to 11. It is a really good general purpose conversion/authoring appliction for all forms of target optical media.

  • Quicktime won't open .mov files anymore

I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.5.8 and Quicktime Player 10.2. Since upgrading to OSX 10.7, I can no longer open most video files I have collected with a .mov extension. These files open fine in Real Player or VLC.  Quicktime, however, won't open it with a message that a required "codec" isn't available. I've noted that some in this situation have found Quicktime Player 7.6.6 in the Utilities folder. I don't have a Quicktime Player in the Utilities folder.

  • ITunes & Quicktime won't open

After installing iTunes and Quicktime to my computer, it won't open. Everytime i try to open it up it says
"iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"
I tried uninstalling both iTunes and Quicktime. Now a second problem arises. I've managed to uninstall quicktime, but can't seem to do the same for iTunes.
    Someone please help?

I go to start --> control panel--> add or remove programs
After I try looking for iTunes but I can't find it on the list at all. I also tried installing the program "Windows Install Clean Up", but I can't find the program name on the list either.
I went to start->all programs and iTunes doesn't seem to be on the list.
Okay. I think you have managed to mostly uninstall iTunes. what's left over are some program files/folders and two of the background processes installed with iTunes (iPodService.exe and iTunesHelper):
Background processes installed with iTunes for Windows
Those two processes are still running, which is why you can't delete those two folders/files.
So let's try shutting them down.
Right-click your Task Bar and select "Task Manager". Click on the "Processes" tab in Task Manager. Click "Image name" to sort the processes alphabetically, and find iTunesHelper.exe and iPodservice.exe. Select each of the two processes and click "end process the process and click the "End Process" button to shut them down.
Can you delet those two files/folders now?

  • Quicktime won't open on my ibook

For some unknown reason quicktime player won't open, it says "quicktime player quit unexpectedly" but it never opened in the first place. I can't open the app from the application itself or by double clicking on various quicktime movie files including test files from apple site. Tried reinstalling quicktime player 7.5.5 for tiger and still wont work. Any ideas?
    TRhanks

Ideleted the QT plist files from the user/myusername/library/preferences, there were 2. And from the disk utility the Mac repairing permissions ran fine. restarted computer still won't start. Briefly on the top toolbar it said quicktime player but then went away and gives same unexpected quit. I do appreciate your help, maybe some other procedure might work? Any other ideas what might be wrong?

  • Quicktime won't open and system sound is muted

    This is a strange one...
My Macbook Pro's sound is locked on mute and none of my quicktime files will open... kicking back an error -101.
I've scoured all over the net, and I've seen things about headphone jacks showing red light and pluging and unpluging headphones in to make it work... no dice.  But along that same line, if I plug in my TwelveSouth Base jump speaker, suddenly I regain volume control and quicktimes will open... and play.  Sound will come through the basejump speaker, but not the built in.  But as soon as I unplug this USB powered speaker... Qucktime won't open any more new files, and the ones that were open will no longer play.  Pluging in the speaker... quicktime playback is restored.  But still the built-ins won't work.
This problem cascades to iTunes as well.... won't play any songs.  You press play, and nothing happens, the head doesn't move... truly nothing.  the application acts as if the play button doesn't work.
I've never heard of a problem like this, it's like the core system is expecting an external component to do basic function in regards to audio.

I just bought the iSkysoft Media converter and after converting 3 videos I have, it simply blocked sound for
iTunes, QuickTime Player and any app the uses media, for example Keynote.
The error is this one you guys are reporting: An unknown error occurred (-101)
    Could somebody give a hand???

  • Quicktime won't open files, Get Info Video Preview crashes finder

When double-clicking any .avi video file, Quicktime attempts to open it, and then returns an error report with "excbadaccess kernprotectionfailure".
VLC will play any of these files perfectly. I want to set up file handling so that VLC always opens .avi files, so I right-click a video file and go to "Get Info," but in that window the Finder tries to generate a preview of the video, and after a second or two crashes the Finder with no error message.
It is very annoying not to be able to double-click video files to open them. How can I get this working?
Sorry if this has been asked before. Any advice would be appreciated.
Mac Mini Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Quicktime 7.0.4

Thank you for the quick reply.
That method works when selecting and then right-clicking individual files or groups of files, but I frequently put new .avi files on the machine, and I have to repeat the process. I was looking for a solution that would make any future .avi files open in VLC with a double click.
Furthermore, once the file has been set to load in VLC and the icon has changed to a VLC icon, selecting Get Info for that file will still unceremoniously crash the Finder. Is there any way to fix the preview in the Get Info window, or at least stop it from crashing the Finder?

  • Itunes, iphoto, garageband, quicktime won't open, computer keeps freezing..

Hello, I am new to this forum, and am hoping to get some help. In just the last couple of days my computer has began to run a bit funky, freeze, and the pinwheel spins. I have to restart the computer, and sometimes can't even access the force quit. Also, my itunes, garageband, iphoto, etc will not open, nor will quicktime. I just tried to play a youtube video and it shut down firefox. A couple of days ago, I had been transferring data from my computer to an external hard drive, trying to back up all my info so that I could do an update to leopard soon. I tried running Disk Utility which is located in Applications/Utilites folder and run a permissions and disk repair, but was only able to do a verify disk permissions and repair disk permissions. When I tried to verify disk, it said it could not complete due to "volume" error. The option to repair disc would not even open up as a prompt for me to try. I also noticed that the external hard drive was listed along with Macintosh HD as an option to chose to repair or verify. Here is the other thing that has been happening, and I'll try to word this as best I can. The little clicking sound that the computer makes when it is transferring data to the external hard drive won't stop. Even though I have the external disconnected, the sound that the computer made when I was transferring data, still is being made. It seems as though the computer still thinks that the external is still connected, like it is stuck, constantly making that little clicking noise, which is located in what seems to be the front right of the laptop. If anyone one has any suggestions, I would appreciate it. Thank you. J-NY

"When I tried to verify disk, it said it could not complete due to "volume" error."
Try running +repair disk+ from your *software install DVD* and afterwards, run +repair permissions+ *from your HD.*
If the volume cannot be repaired, you will need to use a 3rd party utility. The following utilities you should consider looking into if you do not have any:
    DiskWarrior
Highly recommended for *directory damage* repairs.
    TechTool Pro
    Multi-functional utility.
    Drive Genius Multi-functional utility.
You will need to make your own decision on which to purchase. Read up on them on their websites because each does something a little different.
You must use the versions that are compatible w/your OS system & keep the utilities updated to avoid damaging/harming/trashing your system.

  • Quicktime won't open Mov files

    Hi there,
I am trying to get files from work onto my home computer.
At work, we use Windows and Edius GrassValley (6?) to edit videos. I can convert the files to a Quicktime before I take them home and I've done this several times before.
But now it won't let me open the files in either Quicktime or iMovie. I'm not certain what I'm doing wrong, I don't believe anything has changed on my computer since the last time I brought home some files.
When I try to open them with Quicktime, it just says it's not a movie file even though the tag says it's a .mov and I converted the file to a quicktime file before putting it on my flash drive.
I'm currently running Mac OS 10.6.8, Quicktime 7.6.6 and iMovie 8.0.6 (I know, it's ancient!).
If any of you lovely people could at least point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

  • Itunes and Quicktime won't open.

I recently had a problem with Itunes, which deleted anything new I purchased or downloaded. I found out that if I rebuilt the library the problem could be solved, but I didn't want to risk losing any data so I didn't do it. I figured I'd wait for an update that would fix it and a couple days later I downloaded Itunes 7.3.1. The download did not go smoothly at all. During the course of it: it had to stop downloading and download both Itunes and Quicktime seperatly and it kept saying that my Quicktime was not up to date (something it's been saying for the last couple months). I've tried fixing that before, but when I do it prevents me from going into Itunes.
Now after downloading 7.3.1 neither one of the programs will open. Itunes says, "Itunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration." and Quicktime says, "Runtime Error! ... This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way."
I'm starting to get really annoyed with Itunes, for the last couple months it's had nothing but problems. Can someone please help me.

    Hi Clyde33.
Itunes says, "Itunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration."
Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
