Quicktime X: Bookmark progress in a video?

I watch lots of videos but like to stop halfway through and come back to them later. I'd like a way to mark the progress I've made in the video, i.e. leave a bookmark at the time that I stopped watching. That way I can reopen the file and start where I left off. (I know I could just leave Quicktime and the video open, but I'd rather not)
Does anyone know if this is possible?

Well, duh. But computers are supposed to make the small things in life like this easier. DVD Player has a "Start where Last Played" (or something to that effect) feature -- why can't Quicktime?

Open your QuickTime control panel (either via the Control panels, or by going "Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences" in the Quicktime Player). In the Advanced tab, uncheck Enable Direct3D video acceleration:
... and click OK. Quit and restart the QuickTime Player prior to checking to see if the settings change has had any effect.

Quicktime 10 doesn't recognize external video source.

Setting up my new 27" iMac, and discover that Quicktime 10 doesn't recognize an external video source fed in through the firewire port. It is an older Sony analog to digital video converter, and goes through a FW400 to FW800 converter. Quicktime doesn't even "see" that video source as a choice when recording, nor does iMovie, even though it shows up in the System Profiler.
Apps that were ported over from my previous system, however, such as "Video Viewer" and "Final Cut Pro" do see the source, presumably because they were configured to do so on the old system.
Is there some global settings file that I can edit, or something similar that I can do, to make it visible to all apps?

Quicktime 7 does recognize the video source, but newer apps, such as iMovie, won't. I'd like to be able to capture to iMovie, but can't without the video source being recognized. Is there a fix?

My quicktime is very jerky with 1080p video but when I play the video file in FCPX its smooth. I recently upgraded to OS mavericks on iMac with 16gb of ram and should not be having this problem. Is it possible to reinstall older software?

I have the same but not the same problem. When I play a sound or a video on a website (other than youtube)on safari, a weird nois is comeing from the speakers, the sound has pops/clicks but if I play the same video/sound on mozilla it works fine.. If wnyone know what's the problem.. please let us know

In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them), particularly any DivX extension to Safari. Exporting a quicktime .mov file to rework the video in imovie- pixelated

Hi- I have a 17 minute clip saved in .mov that I want to break apart into 3 segments. When I try to import the .mov file into imovie- it says no way... so I have exported the file as a .mp4 and the file is totally pixelated... so not worth breaking apart.... what can I do to export it? So, it views properly when I import it? anything would be really helpful and i really appreciate it! thanks for the help! spence

I had similar issues when importing shorter clips. The solution that eventually worked for me was to export each clip from Quicktime Pro as Progressive footage in a DV stream using the DVCPRO50 settings. Exporting in the regular DV format caused the footage to look very pixelated in certain parts. The downside to this is that the DVCPRO50 settings produce clips that are twice as large. (A 1 min clip will be around 400MB in size, compared with 200MB for regular DV.) Try that (assuming you have upgraded to Quicktime Pro).

Well since I do not have iPhoto 7 I can only guess what may be: As far I can remember up to iPhoto 8, iPhoto insisted on Quick Time Player 7. As I can see you have Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) and there Quick Time X is the standard playaer. Basically Quick Time 7 is not part of Snow Leopard.
Can you please check if Quick Time 7 is installed under Applications->Utilitis (in 10.6 Quick Time 7 if presenet is installed not under Applications - there Quick Time X is - but under Application/Utilities).
If not: insert your Snow Leopard installation DVD.
Once the installer opens, double-click on the Optional Installs folder
Double-click the Optional Installs.mpkg package
Click continue.
Select the option for QuickTime 7 then click Continue to start the installation.
If it is there you may try to move the iPhoto prefernce file to another folder and let iPhoto create a new one.
Please keep the old file until you are sure that iPhoto works how it should.
The iPhoto preference file can be found under your home folder then Library then Preferences and there
com.apple.iPhoto.plist
As alraedy mentioned do not delet this file, since if something goes wrong you can put it back.

You can only use QuickTime Player 7 to play that 12 year old format.

Importing and handling progressive (non-interlaced) video...

Hi, have searched around and can't quite find the answer to my problem so I hope somebody can help...
Ive recently aquired a Sony TRV 900 (3ccd) which has a progressive shooting option. Apart from a strange semi-strobing effect on that sometimes occurson fast moving objects this option generally seems fine in good light.
I can import into Final Cut Express (v1) ok, and when I view the clip frame by frame (with the arrow keys) every single frame is clear, crisp, free of jaggies etc.
As soon as I play it back (either as a clip or in a sequence) it appears to be lower quality somehow and there is lots of nasty aliasing or jaggies. Pausing restores the image quality back to normal.
Ive messed with various options available when putting the browser into list view. (PAL or square ratios etc). Even tried exporting a final cut express movie, to view in Quicktime but the quality never matches that of a frame by frame playback in FCE. The exported versions if viewed frame by frame lack also lack the higher quality.
I cannot find any sort of interlace or field options during the import stage but as my 'stills' are great I assume it's either the preview playback or the rendered export at fault,but it's driving me pretty crazy! lol
Even though footage may end up on a dvd at some point (ie. interlaced, right?), I would still like progressive versions to create web versions etc.
Am I completely missing the point here or something?
Hope somebody is able to shed a little light here for me?!

As far as i know, Final Cut Express (at least the version i've used which is version 2) assumes you are working with interlaced video and that is that. In Final Cut Pro there is the option to work with progressive footage, but i think FCE just assumes you are using interlaced, and doesn't allow you to change that.
The way you are describing it, it does sound like it is playing progressive footage when in an interlaced mode. A similar thing happens when you play interlaced footage in a progressive mode. It looks absolutely fine when you look at a single frame, but once playing it has lines and artifacts around edges.
I'm not sure if there's anything you can do about that. I'd like to be wrong though.

Quicktime NO Longer Gets Streamed H264 Video . Why

for teh past year and ahalf i have streamed live content to our helix server, and have been able to watch it with quicktime on other pc's however in teh past month and few updates, quicktime has broken this. no video is diesplayed at all. if we change our live capture to use regular mpeg-4 we can see the video. but onc ewe try to go back to h264, we no longer see any video. vlc works great, so why is it that h264 streaming from our helix server no longer works with quicktime? also why is there such a huge memory leak when you watch live mpeg4 files streamed from a helix server or quicktime server? its huge like 50k a second. in mpeg-4, h263, and h264??

even if that drive is not hopelessly fragmented (and chances are that it is) it is still a little too full (more than 80%) and certainly will not be performing at its best
are these 3 drives dedicated to your media or do they contain all sorts of stuff?
for best performance, consider keeping your main media drive (the 500GB Lacie) dedicated to your capture scratch only, and wipe it clean at the start of each project
you can use the other drives for your longer term media / library footage / archive documents
in the meantime consider changing your capture scratch to the G-DRIVE and see if you fair better with that one and/or dig in to your existing stuff and start freeing up space, consolidating uneeded footage on other drives etc

Snow Leopard, quicktime H264 playback, cinema speakers cause video freezing

I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.1 on an early 2009 MBP 17 (2.66ghz) with 9400 and 9600 graphics chipsets. This version of Snow Leopard supports hardware-accelerated H264 video playback on the 9400 chipset. I have a 1080p video which plays back flawlessly using Snow Leopard's Quicktime player with hardware accelerated decoding (averages less than 5% of the CPU during playback of 1080p video).
Since I added the Apple Cinema Display 24 (ACD24) with its built-in USB speakers, I can no longer play this video back smoothly with the ACD's speakers in use for the sound. This setup causes frequent video playback pauses and freeze-frames (sound continues to play).
If I switch the system audio back to the MBP's built-in speakers, the playback immediately returns to being flawless.
I've also noticed that Windows 7 under Bootcamp does not work very well with these speakers, which frequently pop and click under Windows 7 when music or video is being played.
Any suggestions for troubleshooting these problems?

I seem to have fixed it.. I spent an hour troubleshooting. I logged into my vanilla guest account and the glitches were still there, so I knew if the problem was from 3rd party software, it was installed system-wide or at least for all users. So I removed all my 3rd party PreferencePanes and the problem disappeared. I slowly added them a couple at a time and the culprit was the Unsanity software (Application Enhancer, FruitMenu, MenuMaster, etc) .. I went to their site and the last update is about Leopard compatibility.. lol. So I think I'm just not going to use their software anymore. Problem solved!
