Quicktime x not playing some videos anymore

Hello,
I've been watching a movie the last days, couldnt finish watching it ...and today, when i opened my mbp , and clicked the movie, quicktime suddenly said it cannot play the movie due to unknown format. i want to emphasize that i have been seeing it with quicktime 2 days ago . The only thing i can think about that i did is apply a system update , the one with safari and some photo cameras.
Anyone had any issues like this? Any info would be appreciated
Thanks.

  • My mac pro will not play HD video anymore?

Just in the last 4 - 6 days or so my Mac Pro (os 10.7.4) will no longer play HD video. On you tube, detroit tigers web site, espn videos nothing? plays for 5 - 7 seconds and starts replaying the last 1 second clip over and over and over again. the sounds continues on the track but not the vidoe? Anyone else experiencing this?
    Please help
I've tried reintalling Flash no difference.
I was going to download Firefox but funny enough the tutorial that is played on the video screen comes up flashing and green.

    buckmacie,
has the video been completely downloaded onto your MacBook Pro when you start to play it? Or are you playing it while it downloads, AKA streaming it?

  • Quicktime will not play any video files

When trying to play any compatible video files .mov, .mp4 etc... all I get is a small black box in the upper left corner of the screen. The computer is not frozen I can close the window with the red x. I can open Quicktime and the web stuff opens but opening a video file on the computer causes this. I confirmed the latest version of Quicktime in installed and I have confirmed the video files I'm trying to play work on another computer and the .mp4 file plays in media player on this computer. The video card driver is up to date. I want to play my .mov files from my iphone but can't.

all I get is a small black box in the upper left corner of the screen.
Curious ... I wonder if this is a blown-out display preference?
Could you check something for me please? Create a new user account on the PC with full sdminidtrative rights. Log out of your usual account and log into the new account. Try playing a file in the new account. Does it display properly?
If it works okay in the new account, let's try to get things working in the normal account again with the instructions from the following thread:

  • TS2776 Every time I go to play a video on itunes, the itunes site shuts down. I can play music all day, but it will not play a video anymore. This has happened in the last two weeks.

Can anyone help me with this problem. Every time I click a video to play it itunes tells me it is shutting down. I bought a new monitor last week and thought it might be a resolution problem so I hooked up the old monitor and it still told me the same thing. Not sure what the problem is, can anyone help me PLEASE.

    You can use Perian http://perian.org/

  • Quicktime X will not play some Apple Mpeg 4 Movie Files

    Hi,
Having a strange issue.  Quicktime X will not play some of my Apple Mpeg 4 Movie files anymore.
The files open fine in Quicktime 7, but not Quicktime X.
I receive the error message "The document could not be opened. A required Codec is not available"
I have installed other codecs (Flip4Mac as well as Perian), but no luck.  Have re-installed Quicktime X (10.1) and software is all up to date (running Lion 10.7.2).  The movie file works fine if I import it to iTunes as well.
Called AppleCare Support and they could not come up with an solution.  Does anyone here have any ideas?
    Thanks!

(BTW, I just realized this was an MPEG-4 topic - my issue wasn't necessairly centered around that architecture)
Yes, I naturally assumed that you were having problems at some point with MPEG-4 Part 2 or Part 10 content.
Since I mentioned "from," I should have mentioned what the codec/wrapper was (it was captured into a .mov file using DV/NTSC via "Capture Now" in Final Cut Pro studio V7, via an analog-to-digital converter).  What makes this confusing is that files captured with the same settings sometimes open right into QuickTime X with their audio/video intact, and at other times, only the audio shows up (where upon opening that same file in QT 7, we can see both audio and video). Interestingly, the problem files icon shows up on the desktop as the generic movie icon, whereas the "normal" files' icon is the first frame of the video.
May we assume at this point that the source video data is DV-25 with 16-bit Interger (Linear PCM) audio sampled at 48.0 KHz and it is the scratch MOV file that may or may not open/play correctly in QT X but always opens correctly in QT 7?
Ultimately, though, this is an unimportant point in solving my issue. Why? Well, if I can successfully open the problem files in Compressor (e.g., see/hear the video/audio), then I can theoretically re-compress (or "re-wrap?") them to whatever codec I want - ideally one 100% compatible with QuickTime X.
I took a test file, placed it into Compressor, and applied the DV/NTSC setting to it (yes, I know, the same setting the file already had). After re-encoding (which took very little time), the file was perfectly executable in QuickTime X - both Audio and video showing as to be expected, and no real difference in quality (not that VHS source is quality to begin with).
This sounds as if the "problem" file's container may be the source of the problem. As I don't know if your Compressor test is passing the data through to a new faile container, I would make an additional test here. If your version of QT 7 is keyed for pro use, I would simply use the "Save As..." File menu option to to create a new file container. In fact, I would probably just create a "reference" file rather than another "standalone" file here—a very, very fast operation—and then open the secondary file in the QT 7 "Properties" window to ensure all of the data tracks (1 video, 2 audio, and 1 timing) are present. If all looks good, I would then try opening the reference file in QT X to see it it now plays. (I.e., whether you use a reference file here or a standalone file, the object is to see if the QT X player will now recognize all contained data tracks whether resourced by reference or physically contained in/via the new wrapper.)
Could this have been answered without knowing the complete "from" specs? Probably… which is why I posted to the help forum in the first place - the goal being some other reader may have had the same issue, and had a handy solution or suggestion, saving me the time of experimentation (what forums are great for).
I don't know about you, but I would still be looking at profile/level combination settings to see if an an assumed MPEG-4/AVC video and/or AAC audio settings had been properly encoded for QT playback.
I have no doubt that there's a technical difference between the files that created this issue in the first place. But, the solution of re-compressing with an identical codec did the trick, which for this project is good enough for me.
Recompressing data is slower than rewrapping data which is slower than rereferencing the data pointers. But, if your solution works, then that is all that matters.

  • Quicktime not playing .mov videos captured with my iPad2

I moved some videos that I took with my iPad to my macbook pro, but quicktime will not play them (.mov files). What's the deal?

On the camera and after the transfer from camera to computer the files ended in .tod, as they always have. I had originally exported them into H.264, but the video quality was fairly shotty compared to what I typically get when exporting to .mov, and I really need the better quality. My biggest question is really why QuickTime will not play the converted .mov files now when it used to. What's the deal with it?
You say you are exporting to MOV. However, as QTKirk previously pointed out, MOV is a file format and not a compression format. So we still have no idea what video format you are converting to when you select the "Export to QuickTime" option. If you are using the default MPEG Streamclip video compression format for this export option, then you are converting the TOD file video to the Motion JPEG A compression format. Although I do not have a problem using it, according to the Apple Web Site, Motion JPEG is supported by Snow Leopard but no longer natively supported by Lion.

  • ITunes not playing some music videos

My iTunes (ver. 10.1) will play the audio for some music videos but not the video. They are videos that were downloaded via the iTunes Store in the past and all but 2 are doing this and they are all the same format. No, I'm not using AirTunes! And I haven't exceeded my "authorizations" limit. I'm just trying to play the videos on my laptop with regular speakers. TV Shows and short films that I have work fine, and so do some videos that I got from outside of the Store. I tried opening them in Quicktime and it does the exact same thing, audio but no video. I tried repairing permissions and nothing changed. I even went back into my Time Machine and when I did that the files wouldn't work from there either, even though I know they worked a year ago! At first, it showed the file thumbnail, but when I clicked on it the thumbnail went gray. Any ideas what the heck is going on here???

Alright! Looks like the latest update to iTunes actually fixed my problem!
I noticed in the update notes that it was supposed to address certain problems with the graphics card (Nvidia 9400 and 9600) not playing certain video files correctly. I thought it was worth a try, so after I updated I played the videos that previously were not working and voila! They work now!
For those of you who had a similar problem I would try it with the iTunes 10.1.1 (4) update and see if they work. Otherwise, I guess you've got a different problem. Good luck!

Sorry for this question. Can you use this device with Vlc or QuickTime? Does skype support it? Is this device supported only by its own software?
I need a device that can work with my own software. My software can work only with a QuickTime supported device.
Thanks if you will reply to me.

  • Itunes doesn't play the video anymore

Help! ITunes doesn't play the video clips anymore just the sound works.
I've restarted, quit the other applications but no result.
    What can I do ?
    Thank you for your suggestions.
    ITunes 8.1
    QuickTime 7.6
    Mac OS 10.5.6
    Mac Pro 2x3 GHz
    RAM 8 Go

If you are playing through remote speakers, iTunes 8.1 will not play the video. Previous versions would play fine using only the computer's speakers, but 8.1 requires the remote airtunes speakers be deselected.

  • HT3775 My Macbook Air (still with Lion) will not play .avi video files

My Macbook Air (still with Lion) will not play .avi video files (brought over from an older PC where they play with another viewer). This site implies Quicktime Player should be able to do so. Is there a codec or something else I'm supposed to download?

I had found this through other threads, but it is what worked, even allowed my AVI files to be played in PowerPoint. Changing to 32-bit encryption did not work, BTW.

  • Safari not playing streaming video
