R9 280X flicker

I bought an MSI R9 280X from scan in Febuary it worked fine for about 6-8 weeks then I started to notice a flicker/jump on the screen every now and then. I tried everything I could swapping cables, monitors, power sockets but the problem remained. When I run use the pc without the GPU there is no flicker. I RMA it to scan where they could not find a problem but that maybe because they don't have anyone staying by the pc watching it all they can do is run certain test. Anyway after a little hassle they returned it to MSI and they said they would replace but I was never told if the fault was found. I got the replacement but the same problem is happening. It only seems to happen on 2d applications watching movies surfing the net even as I type here. But haven't noticed it happening in games. I have tried MSI support but I'm not being helped and scan will only go through the whole RMA again. Can anyone help I would really appreciate it, I've spent £240 on this card and it's stressing me out now.

Hi, thanks for the reply and help. I installed the app and I have notice that the flicker has stopped when I'm running the app in either OC, gaming or silent. Is this because it keeps the clock speeds constantly high? I'm new to pc gaming and gpus so I only have some basic knowledge. Also is it safe to constantly have these modes on, will it have a negative effect in anyway? thanks again

• Temporary Solution for screen flicker r9 280x

After performing various tests I've fixed the screen flickering on my msi r9 280x, I hope this can be useful for all here with the same problem and with different patterns of R9 family, that I have running on my pc and I have not had even the slightest flicker playing youtube videos where the problem became acute.
1 open the task manager and end the process Catalyst Control Center: Monitoring program and also the Catalyst Control Center: Host Application.
2 Go to C: \ Users \ XXX \ AppData \ Local \ ATI \ ACE right click on the Profiles file, in the end the general menu select Read only, accept.
3 Again right click and select edit, and file searches within these lines
<Feature name="CoreVoltageTarget_PCI_VEN_1002&DEV_6798&SUBSYS_27751462&REV_00_4&320ACFF0&0&0010A">
<Property name = "Want_0" value = "850" /> CHANGE THIS VALUE OF 850 FOR 900 only
<Property name = "Want_1" value = "1200" />
This value changes the low voltage in 2d (resting) 0.85va 0.90v
4 then go to the File menu, select Save As, in writing profiles.xml nombe save.
5 Again right click on the profiles file saved on the desktop and select read-only
6 Go back to Go to C: \ Users \ XXX \ AppData \ Local \ ATI \ ACE and remove the profiles file.
7 copy or cut and paste into C profiles saved file to your desktop: \ Users \ XXX \ AppData \ Local \ ATI \ ACE.
8 Finally go to task manager and then click on file to run new task, we write MOM.exe there and ready, restart the pc for security.
to ensure that its voltage is at 0.90v use GPUZ and check the end of the sensors tab.
note that if we use the application msi afterburner not enable Unofficial Overclocking mode option because in themselves to have it on and change the clocks video card testing restores the voltage 0.85V.
when I play some games I use msi afterburner like msi Gaming app since I have experienced that without the Gaming app clocks fall then at 300mhz after making this process voltage, I recommend you use to see, as an example in msi afterburner I apply the core clocks of vga 1100 and Gaming active app one of the two profiles, the Gaming mode or the mode Oc down and watches only parameters selecionados 1020 mhz or 1050 mhz vga respectively when accelerating up to 1100 mhz selected msi afterburner.
I hope this is useful that I share as many as we can not believe that to date no actions are taken to this problem taking into account the value of the video card. Maybe this and many what they knew, but there will be many who do not and those like me tried in many ways to carry it out and not succeeded because that's how I achieved step by step and fully functional, sorry if some way I can not explain to clearly as I do not speak English and I'm using a translator, and hopefully serve them again, I just do it to help them all and hopefully once and for all of the annoying screen flicker go ...

• Radeon R9 280X 6GB - Occasional 2D flicker, no matter what I'm doing

Hey, so, as the title says, I have a Radeon R9 280X with 6GB of RAM. Just got it recently. When I got it, I started having a problem with a persistent 2d flicker that would happen while I was gaming or just on my desktop. It happened at random it seemed; some days I would go without seeing it, some days I would see it several times an hour. Thinking the card was defective, I filled out an RMA through Newegg and got a new one.
Lo and behold, same problem. I'm looking for any and all input you guys might have as to what my problem might be, because I have no idea where to start with troubleshooting this guy. I've tried the newest drivers/catalyst and beta drivers with the same results, and I haven't found any vBIOS updates through MSI Live 6.

My card does it too, and I always use ParkControl.exe on every PC build, so core parking is not happening on my PC. If I look in task manager or Process Lasso, all cores are active 100% of the time...still happens to me though. I hope this has nothing to do with the VRM issues that these cards are known for. I can't imagine anything in my case overheating because I have very large 120mm fans always blowing full blast on my card and 120mm fans taking are out of the case. It's always very cool in there. GPU temp never departs 56c in games.

I am giving everyone I find MY fix. Let me know if this post I put on another thread does it.
"I know this has been longer than 60 days. However I just wanted to post my fix for others in case its searched for. This has been so frustrating to figure out. My fix has been a variety of things such as clean installs of the drivers MANY MANY times. The final time I reinstalled the ATI's CCC driver 14.7 beta. I noticed that I unknowingly (by ignorance not action) installed MSI's version of CCC from there website as well. After (not) installing MSI's version on top it seemed to help but the clock speeds still fluctuated from 300MHZ- to the max 1020MHz continuously. After looking in the CCC I saw an option that caught my eye. "Alternate DVI Operational Mode" is checked by default on both screens options. So I unchecked it...applied changes.... VIOLA no more flicker and clock speeds have been stable for the past 5 hours. I however have not restarted my computer for fear it will return and I throw the computer out the window. This is atleast worth an attempt if you have the dreaded "Flicker" of the R9 280X.

"Alternate DVI Operational Mode"
where I can find that option ?

• MSI R9 280X Gaming 6GB Issue

I've purchased this card about a month ago from Newegg and it's been great so far. The only problem that i have is when navigating through windows. Maybe it's just from using my browser but I've notice the screen to flicker when i'm in the browser scrolling or watching videos. I have turned off hardware acceleration, used MSI drivers, beta drivers, and the latest drivers but this still happens from time to time. I don't think the card is an issue itself because i do not notice this when I'm in game. I believe the R9 280x 6GB that i have comes with the latest vbios already so i am not too sure if MSI currently has anything to remedy this issue. Apparently this has been an ongoing issue with R9 cards. So not sure if it is the R9 line of cards itself, the drivers provided by AMD, or the bios installed on the cards. RMA won't fix this issue as it is a widely known problem throughout all manufacturers of this line of cards.

Yeah, I got the same issue. Windows 8.1Pro (64bit). Same card (6GB).
If I'm on the desktop and I leave a game running in the background and sometimes when using the browser displaying videos and/ or flash video ads, I get what looks like a screen shift. The picture flickers or jars upward/ downward. It reminds me of something you might have seen on an old CRT monitor when you hit the degauss button, but not quite as bad. It's like some kind of vertical screen refresh or something and looks like someone smacking your monitor from the top while you are using it. The only way I know how to fully re-produce it, at will, is by running my Unigine Valley benchmark in the background and then proceeding to do things on the desktop. It's definitely not heat related because my GPU temp can be at 33c or lower and still doing it. If I leave my Elder Scrolls Online game running in a background, depending on what's happening in the game, it can do it in this scenario too.

• Msi R9 280x Gaming 3Gb, texture flickering BF4

Hey people,
I got texture/screen flickering with my new MSI 280x Gaming 3Gb after playing the campaing in Battlefield 4 for around 20-40 min. I'm using the latest AMD 14.4 drivers. In Bf4 all graphics settings are on Ultra (vertical sync off).
I don't know if a rom could affect this weird behavior but here is my current rom: lalalalas://www.dropbox.com/s/48618erlvh4gvyy/Tahiti.rom (i am not allowed to post links.)
I recorded a short video with Fraps. This is the hidden link on Youtube: lalalaa
Temperature was around 71 when recording the video according to GPU-Z. I have read that these cards can go up to 85-90 degrees, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Vbios is latest (TV277MH.350). Try disabling CPU core parking as some users reported that it solves such flicker issues:
http://bitsum.com/about_cpu_core_parking.php
Thanks for the suggestion. I already have some core parking function disabled in windows and in BIOS, because it could disturb any audio recording in my music software (no power saving, EIST, C1E, etc...). However, this software is new so i will try and test this out.
Is 79-80 degrees normal for this card while playing a game? This is with room temperature around 19, a Coolermaster CM690 iii with 2x 200mm fans, 2x 120mm fans. No cable cluttering and other heat sources are 4 Hd's, but there is plenty of airflow. The fan speed is sometimes keeping temp around 79 Degrees and other times the temperature goes up to even 87 while the fan speed is not even close at running a 100% (for example at 52%).

• 2d Screen Flickering - MSI R9 280X TwinFrozr OC 3GB (R9 280X GAMING 3G)

Hello,

GPU-Z:
2d flickering, it seems, when it downclocks to 300Mhz, the screen starts flickering, and can't run games in 2d mode without flickering. The GFX is perfectly fine playing games in full screen.
Any ideas, folks?
I'm sure that changing the clock to 450Mhz default would fix this, or perhaps 500Mhz, but I don't know how I should do that, and maybe there is another fix for this.

• Mid-2010 Macbook Pro Screen Flicker Pixel Seizure

Not sure how else to describe the problem, but I hope the title helps!
I have a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro. I noticed in the last month or so, my screen would flicker. But not the entire screen. Just certain areas, like the pixels would jump/lag, as if it it would jump to the correct position. I don't know what's the word for it: glitter, pixel, flicker, seizure. I mean, that what it looks like. It actually hurts my eyes.
I don't know what could be the problem or if anyone knows what's going on. It's just certain pixels (random on the screen, but usually right in the middle) that get "stuck" and half a second later, jump. Not sure what the proper word is, but if anyone could identify it, that'll be great.
Safari, Chrome, and Word are the applications I use, and I've seen it all three programs. It's becoming a lot more noticeable and frequent now, especially if I switch programs or if I'm loading a new page.
The MBP is a tank, but I've been considering buying a new MacBook, preferably the Air, until this MBP kicks it, so if anyone has estimation on its shelf life, that'll be great (My 2005 Powerbook G4 barely made it through 4 years!). The warranty on the MBP just expired last year.
Thanks in advance, I appreciate any insight on the issue.

Curiously, I don't have that option. It only gives me the option to disable Automatic graphics switching where it should give the better battery life or higher performance options. Do I have something disabled that gets rid of that option? It's the same under the Battery or Power Adapter options.
I'm going to take it to a genius but I'm wondering from reading other forums that maybe one of my RAM slots is bad. I want to have a play but will the genius know if I've opened it up and then possibly refuse it? If it is bad RAM then I can fix that myself without having to travel 70 miles to my nearest Apple Store. Is there a seal that I would break that would give away the fact that I've opened it up?
Thanks for the advice so far.

• Mini-DVI to VGA flicker with Snow Leopard and 2nd monitor

I have a 24" iMac (fall 2007) and recently purchased a 26" Vizio (VMM26F10I) and connected it as a 2bd monitor for my iMac using the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter Apple sells.
The new monitor will flicker now and then and some times will go to no signal. I have to change resolutions to something else and then back to standard setting to get it to come back or unplug adapter and plug back in.
Is there a fix for this?

26" VGA...? Which resolution/frequency? Have you tried a fresh cable with clean connectors, etc....
What did Vizio say when you contacted them with this question about your new purchase?

• Radeon 9600TX + Xorg 1.6.1.901: Disturbing Flicker

Hi! I try to setup a Radeon 9600 TX (R300 Chip) with Xorg 1.6.1.901 and xf86-video-ati. I want to use 2D + 3D acceleration. This is a new system setup using XFCE. (I intend to add compiz later.)
Acceleration for 3D is present + ok. Window resizing is rather choppy but acceptable. But I see a disturbing flicker when logged into X, as if waves were running down the screen horizontally. This is very inconvenient and hurts the eyes after a short time. Also the font in the VCs is not displayed in sharp edges but I do not know if this is interrelated (or erroneous).
I would like to keep the xorg.conf minimal. Since the DDC/EDID data that shows up in the log is correct, I did not add any ModeLines or mode setup. The log shows that xorg makes all decisions right (how it seems to me).
There are loads of posts about ati issues but I did not find anything that helped me solving my problem. Perhaps someone can help? Thanks in advance.

First I tried to force the monitor into 1280x1024@75 mode which does not show the flicker. In three horizontal areas in the screen, the display was very fuzzy. So I had to decide whether use 60Hz mode with the flicker problem or use 75 Hz mode with the fuzzyness problem.
I tried the first alternative by ignoring the EDID data and force the display mode but I didn't succeed with solving the fuzzyness problem. So I decided to go back to 60 Hz mode and try to solve the flicker problem. (I already tried 'Option "Flicker" "false" - no effect!) I have no more ideas.

• IPAD 4 screen flicker in App store as well as browsing via safari and vdownloader. I tried restore and reset, but still the same...

Hi everyone,
I just have my new Ipad4 last January 27, I noticed that while downloading a certain Apps in App Store then scrolling to look for more application, my screen would flicker like flashing or something blinking on it. I don't know what happened, why is it like that? Is it somewhat connected with hardware problem or does Ios 6 version still have a bug? I've tried using safari and other video downloader like vdownloader and I tried searching in youtube, still the same dilemma, it flicker also while browsing some video. Is it hardware problem? I already reset and restore my IPAD thou its a new one still the same dilemma happened again. What should I do? It was a gift for me and I'm really worried about it. Hope you could help me regarding it. Thank you so much.

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.
