Radio Interference causing a haunted mighty mouse?

Ok, so here is the situation.
I have a wired mighty mouse connected through the keyboard to my Power Mac G5 Quad.
The mouse phantom clicks when i pass my finger over the right side (it performs the button 4 function, like I pressed in the sides). All other buttons do not work (except for the primary one).
The mouse has been replaced. And it works perfectly on the machines at the Apple Store. It works perfectly on MY machine, when it is at the Apple Store. I have even duplicated the problem on my Powerbook G4 when the machine is PLUGGED into the wall.
SO, I think that this has something to do with the power outlets in my house. That and the fact that i've been getting all sorts of weird interference (spanish radio coming out of my external speakers, cell phone service being spotty, and XM not working well). Maybe interference?
If anyone has any idea how to solve this... or has had a similar experience, please post. I love my Mighty Mouse and would like it to work.

Hi. Is your house old? It may have to do with improper grounding at your outlet. My mighty mouse used to act up in a very similar way and I discovered that it only did this when one of my external hard drives was plugged into an ungrounded outlet. Once I plugged the drive into the same outlet as the rest of the computer, the problem went away.

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse interference under Leopard

    Hi.
I recently upgraded to Leopard and I'm experiencing interference with my Wireless Mighty Mouse since: the cursor starts jumping erratically. The thing is - this only happens when I'm doing *Java debugging in my Eclipse IDE*. For the rest of the time, it works pretty much OK (may still jitter on occasion).
I'm using TimeCapsule in 2.4 GHz, this caused some problems before I changed the default channel. I powered it down completely and I'm still getting the same interference. This is not due to heavy CPU load - in other cases of heavy CPU usage the mouse works fine. I also tried switching to a wired MS mouse or using the TrackPad and it works OK.
    Any clues?
    Thanks,
    Zviki

Thanks to the good people in java-dev mailing list, I found that it's spindump causing the slow-down. When the application hits a breakpoint it becomes non-responsive. The system decides it's time to activate spindump to dump the process information, in order to "report the problem".
This is totally wrong behavior. Spindump eats the CPU, making the mouse unresponsive.

  • Mighty Mouse + Two-Finger Back Swipe = Wheel of Death

I'm a data-mining tech and I'm going to lose my job soon cause this new Mighty Mouse that I thought would be great and even more efficient for Safari surfing has turned into a disaster to use. It's not every time but often, when I use the two-finger "back" gesture, Safari ties up and eventually greets me with the beach ball of death. I think I'm going to have to plug my wired apple mouse back in to be able to work again. I have the special update for this new mouse installed and have even completely reset Safari. Any ideas all? Thx.

    Hello s:
There are only a couple of things I can think of to try (I do not have the new mouse, so I cannot experiment).
    1. Trash a preference file and restart (com.apple.bluetooth.plist).
    2. Reset Safari.

  • Mighty Mouse Hangs on 10.6.1 Start UP

The "only" weird issue I have with the Snow Leopard 10.6.2 is when the Intel iMac
is cold (after being off all night) and I start. The startup sequence runs normal
until the mouse pointer is placed on the desktop and it freezes. I have to use the
button on the back to restart a second time. The 2nd restart always does the
trick and and the mouse works normal.
I have no idea what may be causing the corded Mighty Mouse to hang and I would
appreciate some suggestions. It is just an inconvenience to have to restart twice

If this is a wired mouse try a different USB port on startup. If that doesn't help
I don't have another port. I have the Mouse plugged into the keyboard as
all four USB port are dedicated to Printer, Keyboard (mouse), Serial to USB
adapter and an interface to digital com gear.
    Delete this file.
    com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist
Just trashed it and did a successful restart. Stay tuned for the cold start
test in the morning. The only setting selected in the System Preference/Mouse
was to activate the right click button.
Good tip..... I hope it works!

  • Mighty Mouse causes electrical noise on headphone socket of Intel iMac!

Sorry for posting this again (it was originally a reply to another thread). I just felt it warranted some attention.
Mighty Mouse (and other USB optical mice) cause noise and interference on the headphone port in an Intel Mac!!!
In the other post it was reported that there was discernible electrical noise and interference when using the headphone port, with echoes, pops and a constant buzz and whine. I really noticed this as well, especially after the impressive noise-free headphone output of the Mac mini I had for 10 days before upgrading to an iMac.
I noticed that the noise changed from a buzz to whine when I moved and picked up the mouse. I've got my Mighty Mouse plugged into my keyboard. At first I tried unplugging the keyboard from the iMacs USB port and the noise stopped. Then I plugged it back in, and then removed the mouse from the keyboard. The interference stopped. I then tried plugging the mouse directly into the iMac. Again, that horrid buzzing whining noise and echoes. So it is definitely the mouse!
The noise changes when the mouse's scanning red light switches on and off and during movement.
I've then tried a second Mighty Mouse, the one I bought for my Mac mini. Same thing. And just now I tried another optical mouse, a mini-notebook one. The noise is even worse! It's quite bizarre as well, the noise changes in pitch the further I move it from the desk surface - its like tuning a radio!
Am I going to be reduced to plugging in a clunky old USB ball mouse to avoid noise through the headphone port of my 1 day old iMac? Can you actually still buy such a device?
Actually, can anybody report on whether the Apple wireless Bluetooth mouse causes electrical noise on the headphone port? And is the noise just on the headphone port or on the inbuilt speakers too? And on the headphone port's dual function as optical audio output?
This is not good. And I'm quite surprised it is something that has been missed by Apple's engineers. Or has it? Is this a known problem? Somebody should have words.
Can anybody from Apple comment? Do they frequent this place? I hope so.
    20" iMac (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hello, I bought an iMac 20" today and ran into the same problem...and found this conversation (and the original thread) with a search for "iMac headphone jack noisy".
The problem is painfully audible on a pair of Etymotic Research headphones that I have on loan from a friend. These are designed to fit into your ears with earplugs that seal off the rest of outside sound, so it's practically like having an oscilloscope plugged into your head. Though the Mighty Mouse certainly aggravates the problem with the varying pitches of whine, I have to say it's just a noisy jack when compared with other devices I've plugged the headphones into.
For instance, my Powerbook G4 has some noise on the headphone jack but it's a soft hiss. There is no variation introduced by plugging in the mighty mouse.
However, on both the iMac and PowerBook G4 it appears that the electrical gain on the noise in the headphone circuit is completely independent of the volume level. This is not true of the iPod, where if you turn the volume all the way down while no song is playing the jack goes dead quiet. If I'm right that the volume is being done entirely with software on the computers, then I have become curious as to whether there is any way to control the electrical gain of the headphone jack.
Without such a hardware-level gain control in the iMac or G4, then if your headphones don't take much power to drive...the relative volume of the noise will be greater. So you can make this less noticeable with bigger headphones. I can't hear any of this noise when I'm listening on a pair of bulky AKG studio monitors (which are not particularly shabby in terms of frequency response or audio quality, though the maximum listening volume isn't very good without a headphone amplifier).
More expense, and hassle, just to work around a
problem that should have been noticed and rectified
before Apple released these computers to their eager
    public.
In Fight Club, the main character faces the grim truth about how his automobile company handles recalls. The financial formula wasn't to recall a car just because they knew it had a fatal flaw, they recalled when the cost of dealing with lawsuits would exceed the cost of performing a recall. A lot of people in business think that way, and it's sad to suspect Apple is in that camp.
Still, engineering decisions are made within certain specifications and tolerances, and influenced by issues like price. So I accept that Apple cannot anticipate every audiophile application, and that there's a limit to the quality level the consumer interface can ship with. If someone wants better, they can buy a firewire or USB audio interface with higher-quality design.
The frustrating bit is that the only guideline we are given from Apple to expect on quality is "excellent", "engineered", and "pinnacle of design". Speaker manufacturers publish graphs showing the response of their system, which you can then test your unit against. Where is the noise limit specification for the headphone jack? Are we all stuck making individual appeals?
Since this problem depends on the headphones, you've got to prove that the headphones you're using are reasonable. Perhaps see if iPod headphones have the problem?
(Sadly I no longer have iPod headphones with which to test...)
Vainly crossing fingers for a fix.
At least at this point, it can pay off to speak up. My PowerBook mentioned above just had its logic board replaced in order to address a terrible whine that happened when the CPU was drawing a middle range of power. I couldn't really reproduce the horrible cases very easily until I finally found others who managed to figure out that the defect was so bad that some systems could play a nearly full volume musical scale on the analog circuitry of the power supply:
    http://arstechnica.com/staff/fatbits.ars/2006/3/4/3059
Once I could demonstrate it, they fixed it. But the problem had been there since I bought the machine, and made it nearly unusable at times.

  • AVRCP Buetooth issues with Mighty Mouse interference (?) and SONY CMT-HX5BT

    Hello:
Just got a SONY Bluetooth enabled mini stereo system (CMT-HX5BT). Knowing my iMac with OS X 10.4 doesn't support AVRCP Bluetooth (another issue entirely!) I downloaded the Softstick Audio Gateway for Mac. This will allow me to play my iTunes music on the SONY stereo. However, when the Mighty Mouse is switched on, the playback is exceptionally fragmented and almost non-existent except very short bursts. When the MM is switched off everything works wonderfully.
I am hoping that whomever is responsible for BT in general did think that BT Mice would be used at the same time as stereos/headphones. Hopefully this is an issue with something other than BT in general such as Softstick, the MM, or OS X. Any ideas?
Does anyone think upgrading to Leopard, and using the operating system's built -in AVRCP support be better than a third party application? Although I haven't found conclusive proof that OS X 10.5 actually has AVRCP support either. Does this mean Logitech will be getting my business as I switch back to a regular radio frequency cordless mouse?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks for your answer, no problem... it's OK
why don't you try with OS X 10.5... I guess the A2DP is built in Leopard (natively)
Today I saw the CMT-HX5BT at the local shop, they obviously have no clue about its functionality with a Mac, but that mini hifi looks great and it's not even that expensive...
maybe I should buy it anyway...

anyone experiencing similar problems? hope there's a solution soon.

    Hi Barry
I knew I should have copied the log out before hitting "send to apple".
I cant remember what I saw in there, but it already happened twice, whenever I try to reconnect the mouse. And thanks, cause I just realised I didnt remember seeing it happened after I upgraded to 10.4.9; it was imediately after I installed 3 updates:
    Battery Update 1.2
    AirPort Extreme Update 2007-003
I cant rmeember the last one, but I couldn't have possibly installed this, could i?:

  • Mighty Mouse causing keyboard problems?

I just recently bought a wireless Mighty Mouse, and, after having installed it, all of my F buttons (dim screen, brighten screen, expose, dashboard, etc.) on my MacBook's keyboard are incorrect. My forward one track button is now the expose, and my volume up button is the dashboard. Aside from those and one or two others, the rest don't even do anything when pressed. I tried going to my keyboard/mouse preferences and restoring everything to it's default setting, but that did nothing. I also tried moving said F keys back to their original settings/keys, which I did succeed in, partially, but my volume up, volume down, mute, track forward, pause/play, track backward, keyboard brighten, keyboard dim, screen brighten, and screen dim keys still do nothing.
You could probably guess that this is extremely annoying, so, all answers are greatly appreciated.

  • Does Time Machine Backup irritate wireless Mighty Mouse?

Hi there. I'm having a strange issue here. With an iMac that came with bluetooth mouse and keyboard, OS out of the box (no software updates installed because there's no internet connection), each time Time Machine is backuping files, the Mighty Mouse is acting weird. It actually feels like someone else is working with it. Even if I do not use it and leave it alone, the pointer goes wild on the screen. Trying to work during Time Machine backups is impossible, because I cannot use the Mouse properly.
Does anyone of you have a similar, if not, the same issue? Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    later, Stephan

I am having a similar problem with my IMac and Time Machine. During wireless Time Machine backups, the wireless mighty mouse and wireless keyboard disconnect. If the mighty mouse remains connected, it moves very slowly and is virtually unusable.
So far I've thought of two potential problems to troubleshoot:
    1. I experience this problem when I connect to the Time Machine through the "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" wireless connection (set in the AirPort Utility), but I don't experience the same problem when I connect to the Time Machine through a wired ethernet connection. So it appears the b/g compatible setting is causing interference. I haven't tested to see if the "802.11n only" wireless connections causes this problem or not.
    2. I also wonder if the IMac does not have enough RAM to complete the wireless backup. My IMac has 2gigs of RAM, and during backups it maxes out. I plan to upgrade to 4 gigs to see if the problem continues. (Stephan, how much RAM to you have installed?)
    peace,
    Marcus

  • Apple Mighty Mouse problem

I bought a Apple Mighty Mouse for my MacBook and now when I'm moving the cursor it instantly appears in another position that has nothing to do with the positioning I'm moving it. Do you know why this happens? Can you help me?

If its the wireless Mighty Mouse, I had problems with tracking, too.
(Also right button click, but that's a whole 'nuther story)
Some put it down to possible RF interference from other devices causing the problem, while my local Genius put it (and the click issue) down to a botched MM. In the end I gave up and went to a Macally BTMouse Jr. No problems at all.

  • Mighty Mouse makes non-stop click noise, inducing violent madness

Brand spanking new Mac Pro, fresh out of the box as of 6 hours ago. As soon as I plugged in my wired Mighty Mouse, Exposé began going bananas. I quickly deactivated Button 4, but it makes an endless clicking sound from its internal speaker whenever a hand is so much as placed on the Mouse.
Is there a fix or do I have to go get a new mouse? Is this covered under warranty/Applecare?

Had the same thing... When i moved my iMac to different spot on my desk it the mouse started to make noise.... then when i moved it back to original location - no more clicking noise. It truned out that my lamps in the room were causing interference of some sort..... disconnected the lights and no more cliking noise.... this is why its good to invest in universal battery power supply/surge protector to save all you gadgets!

  • Mighty Mouse Extra Clicks

This might be a hardware problem but whenever I place my fingers on my Mighty Mouse, it would trigger the Button 4 action, and make a little click from the internal speaker, as if I had used the side buttons. This makes things incredibly hard to use (button 4 is mapped to Dashboard) since anytime I want to work with the mouse, I'd have Dashboard constantly coming in and out. I found that turning that button off will stop the clicking and triggering, but now means that I can't use that button anymore. Turning the action off, then on temporarily fixes the problem for about an hour and rebooting the computer did nothing to help.
Suggestions as to what might be causing this and how to fix it?

I have had the same problem.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=359574&tstart=0
For the first few weeks it happened all the time. Now it is not happening at all. An Apple support tech called me back today saying that someone else had had the same problem and had found that the problem was due to some sort of electrical interference. When the other person move his iMac into another room, the problem disappeared.
At the same time I updated my system to 10.4.5. Maybe that solved the problem. If you haven't updated to 10.4.5 you might try that. And try moving the iMac to a different location and moving the monitor up and down as I did (see link above).
The electrical interference makes a little since since it is a capacitor switch iirc.
    Good Luck,

  • Mighty Mouse looses connection with Mavericks ...

    Hello,
last week I installed OSX 10.9 on my iMac i5 Mid. 2011 on a 2nd partition. At the 1st partition, I work with Snow Leopard.
Since a few days I noticed, that my Mighty Mouse looses the connection to the iMac more frequently when I work with Mavericks. The batteries are at 60% and they both fits very well.
If I reboot with OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, I'm able to work for hours, the connection is stably all the time. The mouse don't lost the connection.
Has anyone an idea for this behavior?
    Thanks
    G. Hansen

Well, that rules out wi-fi interference. Some people have reported that their Wi-fi causes Bluetooth devices to drop intermittently.
I've got a Magic Mouse and it hasn't had any troubles with 10.9. My trackpad either and it's Bluetooth as well.
Hopefully someone else will have more insight.

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse Clicks

Sometimes (about once a week) my mighty mouse wont left or right click but it will move around on my iMac. If I turn the mouse off and turn it back on, it is able to click again. What's causing this interference?

    Hello m:
Basically a random event like that is - more or less - impossible to trace to a source.
I would trash the preference file (com.apple.bluetooth.plist) and restart.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mighty Mouse

I've seen several posts about the new Apple Wireless Keyboard losing connection. After searching through the forums trying to find what I have discovered, I've decided to start a new thread. Basically, I've found a way to reproduce the "random" disconnects of the keyboard.
Open up your favorite text editor, create a new blank document, and strike the 'Return' key with some force. Shortly after doing so, you will notice your green light come on, and a brief connection lost message on your Mac. Seconds later, your connection will reestablish. Perhaps I have some sort of faulty keyboard, and this just happens to have the same symptoms that other people are experiencing, however, I'd like to see if any others have the issue. Of course, it is most likely not just the 'Return' key. Really any keystroke with some force behind it will cause the keyboard to temporarily shut off and lose connection.
An annoyance that brought me to really find a solution for this issue is that after my keyboard reestablishes its connection, my Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse starts to have issues. The movement along the screen begins to get choppy, and clicks are not always registered correctly, much like if there were some major Bluetooth interference with the device. The momentary disconnect I can deal with, because it has little to no effect on my typing. But when it also messes with my mouse, causing me to have to turn it off and on again, it does cause some considerable downtime.
Does anyone else notice this phenomenon? Also, if this is already being discussed, please point me to the appropriate thread.

I have the exact problems with the original poster. The keyboard I think by now is a given, as I'm typing now with the USB connected keyboard I can see the Bluetooth icon intermittently flashing in & out with that little lightening bolt & I have it off?? Why would it still register connections if I turned it off??
What I don't get is the Apple tech guys are normally really good at saying, "Ok here's the problem, we're on it or heres this fix" & I've notice no type of response, except the usual, "Run script, login on a dummy account or get Cocktail or Onyx" after reading several posts on this same subject all the "go too" answers have been tried.
C'mon Apple tech fix this problem already!!
