RAID 5 Support

Hey,
I purchased Z820 Workstation.
Does it has a controller that supports RAID 5, an on board controller? or Do I need to add a separate controller?
The system was purchased with 5  SATA disks. 5 X 1TB each
Thanks in advance

SATA hardware RAID is not supported on Linux systems.
The Linux kernel, with built-in software RAID, provides excellent functionality and performance.
It is a good alternative to hardware-based RAID. Please visit:

  • What means: Promise Pegasus compatible with Time Machine RAID-support

On the (Dutch) Apple shop it is stated at the Promise Pegasus page: the Promise Pegasus is compatible with Time Machine RAID-support.
What does this mean? What is then the "physical connection path" between the TC and the Thunderbolt Pegasus RAID system?

Thanks for responding to my question. I guess I'm not sure I understand your reply though. I had no problem installing OS X on the 3TB WD Caviar Green and WD assured me that if I wanted to install only Windows 7 on it, there would be no compatibility issues. The problem lies with wanting the drive to be dual-bootable I guess via using Boot Camp (I know of no other way to go about it). The tech at OWC (where I bought the drive) said he had never heard of any problems with being able to install both Mac and Windows OS on the drive. In fact, he gave the same reply as yours: most hard drives should be able to work perfectly fine with your Mac. It's just that I can't get XP or Windows 7 (32 bit or 64 bit) to install on the 2nd partition, making the drive I have now not dual-bootable. The tech said 2TB hard drives were different and should solve the problem but when I asked him for any discernible spec I could look for in shopping for a replacement drive, he couldn't give me one, i.e. most drives should be okay. I have paid to have the 3TB installed and will have to pay to get the drive taken out and a replacement put back in -- I want to make sure whatever drive I put in this time allows me to have 2 partitions: one for my Mac OSX system and the other for my Windows enviroment (either XP or Windows 7).
If there is a work-around not involving Boot Camp, please let me know. I thought the reason for using Boot Camp as opposed to Disk Utility to create the dual-bootable drive was the benefit of using Mac drivers on the Windows side.
If there is another way, I don't understand why PC world made this blanket statement:
"Mac users should know that WD's new drives do not support Boot Camp, therefore they cannot be used as a dual-boot hard drive."

  • Does xserve raid support path failover?

I have two questions about the system.
1 Does the Xserve Raid support path failover from the upper to lower controller? Primarily, if you have IO running on a lun that is on the upper controller and the path to that controller is removed, will the IO get shifted to the lower controller? If so, is there a certain configuration setting that must be applied. I
n reading up on Xserve, it appears that they are independent controllers. The user guide states that when a controller module is out of the system (or failed) the drive modules controlled by that card are not active.
2 Is there a way to determine which drive(s) in the system are the spares or stand by?

    Hi Davel,
    1) No. The controllers are independent. If a RAID controller fails, or a cable fails, or a switch or HBA that a RAID controller is connected to fails, the LUN goes offline until the problem is fixed.
    2) Yes. Just look in RAID Admin. Any drive that is not part of a RAID set will automatically be used as a hot spare. So if you have a 6 disk RAID 5, on a side with 7 disks, you have one hot spare. If you have a 5 disk RAID 5, with two drives that aren't used, you have 2 hot spares.
Note, on #2, hot spares are "per side," because again the RAID controllers are independent. So what I most commonly see for additional protection is a 6-disk RAID 5 + 1 hot spare, per side. This gives about 5 TB of usable capacity, on a 7 TB Xserve RAID.

  • Intel Xserve RAID Support?

I couldn't find any mention of RAID support on the new intel xserves. Does any have any info on them. I was hoping this generation would have embedded support (no more cards).

My first batch of Intel XServes have shipped from
China. Once they get here I'll be able to tell
whether the drive bays use the daughtercard/cable
setup that facilitates the Hardware RAID Card as used
in the XServe G5. They're due in on Monday...
You lucky (and brave early adopter) guy. It would be interesting to know the controller chip on the motherboard, if System Profiler provides that information. There are a few (non-Windows) RAID vendors out there who are doing RAID 5 via driver with certain controller chipsets. Perhaps that's a path. If done right, and with journaling, it could work and be reliable. It would be a processor hit, but with all of those cores floating around, it might be doable as a low-end alternative to an XRAID.

  • RAID support level for A75MA-G55 mainboard.

Do you know if the A75MA-G55 mainboard supports RAID5?. If it doesn't, do you know if MSI is planning on adding that feature in the near future?. Thank you very much!.

According to the manual only RAID 0, 1 & 10. We don't have any idea what MSI does or doesn't have plans for, we don't work for MSI we are users same as you.

  • X2100 hardware RAID support

Got a new X2100 server with two SATA disks.
I upgraded the BIOS using the Supplemental 1.1 disk. The BIOS revision reported is now 1.0.3.
Have defined a hardware RAID mirror of two SATA disks using the BIOS utility. Looks Ok and is reported as "Healty Mirror" when the machine is turned on.
If I boot Fedora Core 4 (which is not officially supported by Sun) I see two disks instead of one as expected.
If I boot Solaris 10 1/96 (which IS supported) then no disks are found!
So my question is: Does anyone know if the HW RAID system on the X2100 is supported at all? And if it is, how?

Have you looked the procedure in this manual?
    http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/html/8 19-3720-11/Chap2.html
Also there seems to be a lack of drivers available with some operating systems ( W2003 ) on the X2100, this could be the case with FC4 ( although I use FC4 on a notebook and it seems very close to RHEL 4, but without RHEL graphics, clustering and other tools ). In the InfoDoc section of the spectrum handbook for the X2100, there is a document that discusses configuring SVM on x64 systems, at the begining the author recommends using the hardware RAID utility, this may suggest that it is supported. You should take a look through the system documentation to see if you have missed something, I'd be interested to know if you set the BIOS up for the various OS types!

  • Raid support...

    hey coders!
what about some support for promise/highpoint raid controllers from the beginning of the installation?

p.s.: are you still waiting for 2.4.20, or why is .4 not out yet? i know you hate this questions... you don't have to answer

Moritz wrote:p.s.: are you still waiting for 2.4.20, or why is .4 not out yet? i know you hate this questions... you don't have to answer
I'd like to have 2.4.20 in there, but it's not the holdup.  The holdup is mostly my lack of time, and I think the other developers are feeling it too.  The initial goal was have a new setup program for 0.4 that would solve all the issues with the old one, but that's not going to happen if I want to get Dragon out before Christmas.
So the new plan is to fix the smaller/irksome bugs in the existing setup script and release it with 0.4.  If that goes well, then we're looking at a couple weeks, time permitting.

  • No RAID support, even hardware raid on the enclosure level

According to a report from XLR8Yourmac.com, a customer bought an Airport Extreme (n) basestation but was unable to have their RAID enclosure recognized. Instead, only one drive shows up instead of two, and is unreadable. Applecare told him that even hardware RAID needs to be supported at the driver level for the unit, and they didn't think the Extreme had enough horsepower to do it. I question this, since you can attach RAID enclosures to computers so old, they are less powerful computers than the n basestation.
This is very bad news for me, as I have two 1TB RAIDs (OWC Mercury Elite Pro 800/400/USB2 SATA RAID enclosures) that I was going to attach to the new extreme, but now, I'm not buying one at all...

OK, thank you. That's exactly my status. And since this machine is very slow and has only around 1GB of memory (minus memory for the GPU!), a swap partition seems pretty important - and be it only for hibernating.
For the records: I recently thought about trying out a swap file on a dedicated non-journaled partition (ext2 f.ex.) mounted with nodiscard. I don't know how much performance I would lose or if hibernating really works flawlessly. But since I'm now using a different harddrive for the netbook and it's running, I don't want to setup everything again at the moment. If anybody tries the swap file variant, it would be nice to report back in this thread :-)

  • MSI G33M-FI motherboard - raid support?

hi, i have just bought a MSI G33M-FI mobo and have a few questions regards raid and the different chipsets:-
1/ how can i tell what chipset my mobo has, ICH9 or ICH9R?
2/ which chipset supports raid ICH9, ICH9R, or both?
3/ what does the spec mean by (optional), as it seems my mobo has most of the optional parts missing?.
i have had a good hunt around the web but can't seem to get any definitive answers, so your my last hope :-).
    many thanks for any replies!
    paul.

    paule,
please read the moan guide for the posting guidelines.
    1. it's ICH9. It doesn't support RAID, does it?
    2. ICH9R.
    3. MSI sells this board in different SKUs all over the world, your mobo is probably missing some optional parts. You got to find that with the reseller.

  • Is RAID supported using eSATA in Portege R700 / R830

Within last 30 months I was using Portege R500 and R600. I had to migrate to more powerful machine 15 months ago - I have chosen Latitude E6310.
But I'm tired with its weight (2.4kg) so I'd like to change some powerful but light machine - R700/R830 looks fine for me. The question I have is about RAID: is it supported when you connect external HDD via eSata?
I have this feature in E6310 and I really love it...

    Hi
According to the info on some Toshiba (Satellite/Portege) R830 specification pages, the notebooks support an eSATA/USB 2.0 (or USB 3.0 depending on the notebook model) which supports the USB Sleep-and-Charge functionality.
There is no info about RAID so I assume its not supported.

  • Suggestions for a good SATA PCI controller with RAID support

I would like to know what the best mac version is for the price, but I would also like to know if there is any way to use a MUCH cheaper made for the PC side. Many of them even say they support Linux but not Mac?!

    Hi-
The following has a bunch of choices for you:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search.cfm?Criteria=SATA%20High%2DSpeed%20Contr oller%20Mac%20Cards&sort=a
The Sonnet 2 channel is currently the most economical.
As for the PC side, you can buy one and try, fail, buy another, etc., or just accept that you have a Mac, and that you need Mac compatible hardware.

  • Raid support on 3120

X     The Sun StorEdge 3120 SCSI Array is a JBOD system that appears to acts like a RAID 1 storage device. What happens when disk fails? Does it failover to the other drive with its data intact?
If so, how does this happen?

the 3120 doesn't have any RAID controller and will just appear as a number of physical disks under format.
A host-based volume manager (SVM or VxVM) or filesystem (ZFS) would be required to provide any data resilience.

  • Mac Software RAID support

I'm using two LaCie Firewire 800/USB drives. I would like to know if it's possible for the mac to use one firewire port and one USB port as a RAID set. I would like to use a Wacom tablet, at the same time as the raid set.

If you can't invest or add ExpressCard, forget it.
There are so many things and threads about USB RAID, a horrible idea and implementation - maybe USB3 will come to the rescue in this century, until then, no, and ExpressCard with SATA and Port Multiplier (and not LaCie drive cases), and no daisy-chaining, no mixing hard drives and others on hub or consumer electronic devices.
And where is the bandwidth to drive all that over a very thin pipe or channel.
http://www.macsales.com/firewire - there are some cases with more storage, but you are still limited. If you had FW800 or heaven forbid! an actual native eSATA port.

  • Can I install oracle VM server with lvm and md raid?

    Hello,
I am trying to install oracle vm server 2.1.2 on a server with md raid and I would like to use lvm on it. It seems to me that the installer md raid support is not working and lvm support is missing.
    Can you help me?
Thanks in advance for any reply.
    Mario Giammarco

    Hi,
    now i understand...
hm - if the install does let you create a raid ( mdraid ) -> you can try to setup the system preconfigured by anaconda...
the lines would be like following:
part swap size 8000 asprimary --ondisk cciss/c0d0
part swap size 8000 asprimary --ondisk cciss/c0d1
    part /boot fstype ext3 size 200 asprimary ondisk cciss/c0d0
    part / fstype ext3 size 14750 asprimary ondisk cciss/c0d0
    part /appl fstype ext3 size 30000 asprimary ondisk cciss/c0d1
    part raid.01 size 1000 grow --ondisk cciss/c0d0
    part raid.02 size 1000 grow --ondisk cciss/c0d1
    raid /disk/disk1 level 0 device=md0 --fstype ext3 raid.01 raid.02
-> check out the your anaconda file: #/root/anaconda*
-> -> modify the part lines and setup a anaconda installer...
( would also a better idea - if you like to install standarized systems )
let me know - if you need assistance with anaconda...
