RAM on a macbook pro 2012

I have been looking at youtube videos regarding changing the RAM on my macbook pro.
Is there a big difference from 4GB of RAM to 8GB ?
My macbook is still very new and under full warrenty both with apple and the store where it was bought.
If i was to change it to 8GB would i be best taking it to apple to do this to keep the warrenty in order and
would i see a difference with the speed that my macbook pro works ?
Thanks

Not if your uses are mostly email, web, and office in one app at a time. 4GB is fine for that.
If you edit graphics and photos a lot, as a student or for a living, 8GB is more or less required. Or if you like to keep a lot open, like lots of browser tabs or lots of programs open at the same time.
I was doing some high-res photo/video work the other day and I ran out of RAM very quickly on an 8GB Mac because of the number of apps I had open and the size of the documents. 16GB would have been great for that type of work.

    Can i use 32Gb (2 x 16Gb) RAM on my 2012 Macbook Pro????

No, the maximum RAM your MBP will recognize is 16 GB.
I suspect that chips with 16GB on each chip are probably of a different configuration than the 204 pin chips that the MBP accepts therefore could not be installed anyway.
The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.

Can I take the old 2x4G RAM DIMMS and install them in my daughters White MacBook 13" 2010 (7,1)
    Thanks...

Your 2012 tech specs state 1600 MHz:

whereas the 2010 white Macbook takes 1066 MHz:
So, the answer would be no.

  • PLEASE HELP me select new internal hard drive for Macbook Pro 2012 (non-retina)

    Good afternoon.
I just bought a Macbook Pro 2012 (non-retina) 15 inch from a friend.  I think it is running Mountain Lion (has not been upgraded to Mavericks yet), and has iLife on it.  It came with the stock 500 gb 5400 rpm internal hard drive.  At home, I only have the Snow Leopard OS installation Cds and a copy of iLife 2011 installation Cds.  I am going to buy 16 gb of RAM from Other World Computing to install.
I want to replace the hard drive with a 1 tb hard drive, preferably something that is $100 or less.
I talked to Other World Computing (OWC) and looked at the Data Doubler Option to replace the optical drive with a Solid State drive, but decided that for now I want to keep the optical drive inside the computer for portability issues.
I know that Solid State drives are better, but they are still too small, and I want the ease and portability of a 1 tb size INSIDE my computer.
Initially I was going to order this from Other World Computing: 1.0TB 2.5" HGST Travelstar 7K1000 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 9.5mm Notebook Drive 32MB Cache. *'New' Factory Replacement with 2+ Year HGST Warranty*    As of April 4, 2014 it's on sale for $79
But then I started reading some of the discussions online and thought maybe I should get a hybrid solid state drive?
I saw on Amazon the Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch ST1000LM014  It's on sale for $94.
But according to some reviews, this Seagate has a platter that is only 5400rpm, unlike the previous Seagate Momentum that has a platter speed of 7200rpm.
How reliable are the Seagate, versus a Toshiba or Western Digital or Hitachi or something else?
Here are my questions about replacing the hard drive:
    1.  Is a hybrid solid state drive going to need some kind of special formatting after I put it into the macbook so that I can put the operating system on it?
    2.  Is a "normal" platter hard drive more reliable than a hybrid solid state drive?
    3.  Is there any additional driver or special software that I have to install for a hybrid solid state drive?
    4.  Currently there is no personal data stored on the computer.  Can I just put the new hard drive in, and then insert the snow leopard install cd?
    5.  If I install snow leopard, can I just go to the App store and get the free upgrade to Mavericks?
    6.  If I want to do the "Data Doubler" option in the future and add a normal Solid State drive into my computer, will it have trouble interacting with the 1 tb hybrid solid state drive?
I would love to get some recommendations about the smartest option to upgrade my hard drive with something that will be fast (I edit lots of photos) and large (1 tb) that isn't going to cost too much.  I don't know much about the different brands or options (and there are so many listed in tons of online reviews), that I got really overwhelmed and confused by the info out there.
I would really appreciate any help and advice.  I've never switched out a hard drive before.
    PLEASE HELP !!!  Thanks!
Here is the "About this Mac" Info:
    Macbook Pro 15-in Mid 2012
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,1
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Software: OS x 10.8.5
Storage (Hard drive): APPLE HDD ST500LM012 Media, Rotational, SATA, GPT (GUID Partition Table)

    1.  Is a hybrid solid state drive going to need some kind of special formatting after I put it into the macbook so that I can put the operating system on it?
The boot drive, regardless of what it is, needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  This is standard with OS X.
    2.  Is a "normal" platter hard drive more reliable than a hybrid solid state drive?
There are arguments pro and con.  Bottom line, SSD's and hybrid drives are still quite expensive per GB than standard hard drives.  If you have the bucks and are a speed demon, go ahead.   I have better use for my money.   Standard hard drives are mechanical and may wear out over time.  But even though SSDs are not mechancial, they can still go bad and ultimately they even have a limit to their write capacity.  The jury is still out on this debate.
    3.  Is there any additional driver or special software that I have to install for a hybrid solid state drive?
    No
    4.  Currently there is no personal data stored on the computer.  Can I just put the new hard drive in, and then insert the snow leopard install cd?
You can physically put the hard drive in but probably not install Snow Leopard on this MBP.
The mid-2012 MacBookPro9,1 models came with Lion 10.7.3 (11D2097) preinstalled.   It is very unlikely you would be able to install Snow Leopard on it.  Historically you cannot install a version of OS X that is earlier than the version that came with your Mac (even if you replace the hard drive).
    5.  If I install snow leopard, can I just go to the App store and get the free upgrade to Mavericks?
Not via Snow Leopard on this MBP.  See my response to #4.
    6.  If I want to do the "Data Doubler" option in the future and add a normal Solid State drive into my computer, will it have trouble interacting with the 1 tb hybrid solid state drive?
No.  They are completely independent of each other; they are just independent storage units (drives) and their RAM does not interact.

    I have a macbook pro 2012 2.5ghz i5, i want to know would  Ddr3 1600mhz So-dimm Cl9 be compatible?

The correct RAM specifications for a 2012 13" MBP are:  204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

Does the Macbook Pro (2012) have a dvd drive? I can't seem to find one.

Not the MBP-R's, you can't even change the RAM or storage in them.
The other 15" MBP's you can and they include the Superdrive built in.
Last time you do a impulsive purchase huh?

  • Brand new MacBook Pro 2012 not booting install of Mountain Lion

    Hi,
I have a brand new 15" MacBook Pro 2012 model (2.6Ghz, 8GB Ram) - works fine on OS X Lion. As I had just bought it I decided to upgrade it to Mountain Lion straight away, and here's where the problems start.
After apparent install the machine re-boots, but upon re-boot I get what I have found to be called 'the grey screen of death' where the loading icon disappears and the apple logo appears and the screen dulls slightly. I have also noticed that through the install process I lose keyboard and trackpad funcionality and the 'spinning wheel of death' froze, even though the loading icon contined to countdown the minutes till install.
I have read many threads online now about how to reboot and reinstall OS X Lion, I have done this succesfully. I managed to save the OS X Mountain Lion files to an external device and attempt to reboot that way - same problems!
How on earth do I get OS X Mountain Lion working on this machine?
From the threads I have read no one has answered this - they simply answer how to reboot into OS X Lion. Others have stated that they have been in to see Apple's "Genuis" bar and the "Genious's" cannot explain the problem and attempt to put it down to hard drive failures etc. Problem is, there seems to be a **** of a lot of people out there with the same issue - surely it's OS problems and not hardware if it's a brand new MacBook?
Has anyone else experienced this? And does anyone else have a solution to my problem?
For the record, I have updated my EFI and firmware as well as my operating system before attempting install.
    Cheers,
    Leigh

As you've Mountain Lion, press Command and R keys on boot, open Disk Utility, erase the drive and reinstall Mountain Lion

  • Macbook Air 2014 Refurb or Macbook Pro 2012 Non-Retina Refurb?

    Hi,
I'm a freshman in high school and need a laptop to bring to school. I'm debating the above. On the Air side, it has a longer battery life and is newer, but it's not upgradable. On the Pro side, it's more 'powerful' (GHz) I think it has turbo boost to 3.1 GHz. I have a Programming and Engineering class and want to run Parallels smoothly. I need parallels for Visual Basic and Java, maybe Inventor. I hope to use until college; Just a last side note, On the AIr I'm looking at the 8gb Ram model, so both MBs are $929

EDIT: I found beta drivers for the MacBook Pro 2012 NVIDIA GPU and one of the fixes is V-Sync problems, which is exactly my issue. However, when I try to install it, it will not work because it says no compatible hardware is found, even though it says it supports GeForce 650M GPUs, which is it pretty much saying I need to get the update from Apple. So, I guess my real problem is... What's the holdup Apple?

  • MacBook Pro 2012 Retina - UK Stores

Hi, I'm sure like many.. you'll be opting for the new and improved MacBook Pro 2012 Retina... pfft who needs an optical drive anymore! I have a small PC that can burn the odd DVD if I need too ;-)
I was just wondering if anyone had any news on UK stock for in-store purchasing? From what I understand, the RAM in the new Book cannot be upgraded personally so whatever one you land up buying is what you'll have to live with .. is that correct?
I hope the UK stores can offer me the 16gb RAM / 512gb model from stock -- else I will have to wait 2-3 weeks for shipment!
If anyone has any news, please post =) Thanks!

All, I think this situation has gone a bit pear shaped - they are having logistic problems in the supply chain, hens why Regent Street only got 8... yes 8! of the new MacBook Pro's .......
I think the best thing to do is order online if you need a configured product (ie. 16gb of ram) like I did!
If you dont mind the 'basic' models, then go ahead to the store --- or wait 3 - 4 weeks for delivery -_-
    Happy MacBook Retina Shopping =)

  • My MacBook pro 2012 Mountain Loin 8.2 don't clear the inactive memory automatically when memory needed for other program so I get page outs.

My MacBook Pro 2012 Mountain Loin 8.2 doesn't clear the inactive memory automatically when memory needed for other program so I get page outs. There are much inactive memory when page outs. Why my mac does this?

That's completely normal. If other programs require memory then the system will reallocate Inactive RAM as needed. Page Outs don't mean anything.
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • How do I upgrade memory on my MacBook Pro 2012

I installed Yosemite and now my MacBook Pro (2012) has slowed dramatically. I have two memory slots, total 8GB.

    Hi,
You should have enough RAM with 8gb. There may be other reasons your computer is slow.
You can upgrade to a maximum of 16gb. Visit the OWC site for more info.
