Random iPhone crashes and reboot loop after iOS 7 upgrade

Hi all
Since I upgraded my iPhone to iOS 7, I suffer from random crashes/resets, where my iPhone reboots and enters a reboot loop (Apple logo, black screen, reboot, Apple logo, black screen, reboot, etc) that I can only exit by restoring the device (resetting doesn't help).
Some more information
a) The device: iPhone 4, 32 GB, has never been jailbroken, and has never shown any similar issues before.
b) The crashes/reboots: I haven't been able yet to find a pattern when and why they happen. I had reboots when searching for an app, when pluging in the wall charger, when entering the access code, and even when doing nothing at all (iPhone in my pocket). The only constant is the reboot loop after the crash.
c) What I tried so far: I restored the device several times, using normal restore (with the iTunes logo) and DFU mode (black screen). After that, I recovered from a recent backup (takes some hours), and everything is ok again - for some hours, until the next crash and reboot loop. I also set up the device as a new phone, and there it seems stable, so I exclude a hardware issue. I tried quite a few of the advices that I found when googling for reboot loops: reset all settings (this led to an another immediate crash and reboot loop), disable app background refresh, etc.
I've been using this device for my daily business. With the current instability (and the couple of hours it takes to bring it back to life again), it became more or less useless. I wish I could downgrade again (I know that I can't). My assumption is that either iOS 7, or some incompatible app or some corrupt setting is causing this situation. But I don't know how to proceed to isolate and eliminate the issue. I really would like to avoid setting up everything from scratch again.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

All,
First of all, sorry for my half-finished post above. While typing, I was interrupted, and by reflex I hit CMD-S. Unfortunately, the stupid interface of Apple's support website interpreted that as a submit command. I tried to complete my text with the update function, but when finally hitting the submit button, I got an error message, and all my updated text was gone... No way to bring it back, and also no way to delete the half-baked posting. Quite frustrating.
Now, to complete what I started above:
In my case, the problem definitely had something to do with the springboard process (an iOS system 'app' that manages the iOS homescreens) and the watchdog process (another iOS system 'app' that monitors certain things on your phone and that can initiate a restart when it thinks the phone is frozen). In the folder '/Users/<your account>/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<your phone>' I could see what caused my crashes; they were all 'stack+SpringBoard' and the reason in these crash log files was 'Watchdog timeout'.
The following two forum posts helped me:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1676330?start=30&tstart=0
https://discussions.apple.com/message/20794982#20794982
I'm quite sure that my issues had to do with the 'application map' that is mentioned in the above posts. So far, Ive been thinking that it was just too large (as in the case of Andi1996 [second link above]), but jmbladen's observation seems not to support this. So, the absolute number might not the source of the problem, but I still assume that something went wrong with my application map during the upgrade from iOS6 to iOS7. I remember having stability problems before, as soon as all my 10 home screens were full of apps and newly downloaded apps would generate additional pages (only visible via iTunes). Considering that there are some fundamental changes to how we can organize apps within folders in iOS 7, it can well be that the springboard process just wasn't able to cope with my application map correctly within the 120 seconds before the watchdog process restarts the phone. My massive cleanup action must have fixed this somehow.
@jmbladen: I'm only using iCloud for the 'find my phone' functionality, so all the backup & recovery was done via iTunes from my local harddisk. And there was no temporal pattern for my crashes before. You might suffer from the same symptoms, but probably not because of the same cause.
My advice for anyone affected by random crashes and a reboot loop is to check out the directory with the CrashReporter logs mentioned above to find out what app or process causes the crash. If it's the springboard and watchdog problem, then you should try to clean up your home screens (from iTunes). Maybe the absolute number of apps is not that important, but make sure that you reduce the number of screens. And then sync and backup before you start using the phone again. In my case it helped.
Hope this helps someone else too.
P.S. Once you know the right keywords to search for, you find forum postings back to 2008 / iOS 2 describing exactly the same problem. This reboot loop is a very nasty issue, and it is hard to understand that Apple still hasn't been able to address this, or at least provide some better help on how to get out of it again.

I cannot sync contacts between my iPhone 4s and MacBook Pro after I upgraded the Mac with the latest operating system software upgrade. Even the Mac Store couldn't help...

That is because that sync ability (for contacts and calendars) has been removed. Use iCloud instead.

My wifes has started to do the same, the iphone 3Gs was mine, I updated it to ios 5.0.1 while still using it and it was fine. I did a backup restore of her old 3G phone and again it was find for awhile.
We noticed she doesnt have any data part of her package so we have switched off the data, since then we have this issue.
I had to install a new docking part of the phone as her mic was faulty, I did the sim out, switch on 3G and data and then sim back in. Switched the phone off and then back on. all good.
I stripped the phone down adn replaced the part. again all good. That I night my wife said Shall she turn the phone off in which I replied it should be fine. When she turned the phone on in the morning, the reboot problem was back.
I'm wondering if the problem is to do with the Data on and off. I've also noticed that when the phone is up beofre it reboots, you can pop out the sim and the signal stays the same.
When it does have a problem, she now does a quick reset from the phone which takes about 5 minutes and shes back up and running. its big pain!
Think I will get her on a data package and then try again

  • IPhone crashes and reboots itself every 2 minutes after updating to iOS 5.01

I saw other people complaing about problems with their devices after updating to the new firmware, but this one wasn't one of those problems. After updating to iOS 5 I did have a few crashes but then some time passed and they stop. The battery meter also seemed to be okay. It wasn't until today that the problems not only came back, but became much worse. I updated the firmware to 5.01 and not only is the battery acting up again, but my phone crashes every 1 to 2 minutes. Suddenly the screen goes black, I wait like a minute for the phone to reboot itself, then it's another minute of it working properly and then the same thing happens and it repeats all over again. I guess it might be important to point out that I'm with a 3gs, which I bought from a country (in Europe) in which I'm not right now (I'm still in Europe though), so there is no way for me to get any help from tech support.

Ok nevermind that, I restored it via my PC and so far I haven't had any problems (it's been a little less than an hour, so I'm still keeping my fingers crossed)

  • Apple TV 2 Reboot Loop After iOS 5 upgrade.

OK, here's the deal...  I upgraded to iOS 5 on my Apple TV 2 and now all it does is reboot.  It never makes it to the menu, just starts up, shows busy icon and after a minute reboots again.  Have tried restarting with menu + down and unplugging overnight and plugging back in.  I do not have a Windows of Mac Machine (ie no iTunes).  How can I resolve this issue so I can start enjoying my Apple TV 2 again?

Thanks for the answer but I had already read that when I researched before posting a question.  I can buy the cable but I'm not going to buy an operating system just so I can install iTunes which is what the instructions you linked to said to do.  I was looking for a solution either via remote control commands to the AppleTV device or a solution of plugging in the AppleTV to Ubuntu to cause the reboots to stop.  I guess since I'm not getting any other replies, it's just not possible which makes for a bummed out Apple Customer.  The only reason I bought the AppleTV over the Roku was because I already had an iPod Touch to connect with it and I thought they had better quality control.  I guess I made the wrong choice.  Thanks for trying to help anyway.

  • IPad 3 reboot loop after iOS update

    Hi,
I have updated my iPad 3 to the last 6.1.2 version and since then it just reboots automatically every two minutes.
I have tried to restore it but now it is impossible to activcate the device from my Wifi or even when connected to iTunes ( it says it can't connect to apple server). In the mean time the iPad just keeps on rebooting every so often.
    What to do?

  • IPad 3 crashing and rebooting again after I downloaded two games- CSR racing and flcommando ?, iPad 3 crashing and rebooting again after I downloaded two games- CSR racing and flcommando ?

It started as I downloaded these games but it crashes when I start AirPlayit hd as well...?
Do I need to show it to a apple store?

    Let put AirPlay aside first.
    1. Does your iPad crash if you remove both games?
    2. Does your iPad crash if you install just game A?
    3. If it crash with game A; does it crash when you install game B?

  • TS3198 Will iphone continue to be unlocked after iOS upgrade?

I.e. if I unlocked it - is it always unlocked now? How about factory reset?

If it is factory unlocked, or unlocked by your cellular provider, it will remain unlocked. If it has been hacked to provide the unlock, it will most likely become locked again during an upgrade.

  • Iphone 5 crashes and reboots randomly while launching apps

Got my phone yesterday. Bought used. Yesterday it was working fine (no apps installed, "nude" iphone) today I was trying to download apps through app store.
Appstore was crashing all the time, 1st just exiting, after next try - frozen screen and reboot. After some reboots the phone won't start and require a recovery by itunes. This happened more than 4 times today.Once I got an error while recovering , the phone was showing apple logo for some time, then virbo - twice, and then again. But hopefully after some tryies I was able to recover. After last recover, my screen was flickering (setting off the auto-brightness ,waiting and switching on helped.
So the question is: All this strange behavior is a software or hardware problem? How to fix it?
    Iphone 5 32gb ios 8.1.3

Basic Troubleshooting Steps when all else fails
    - Quit the App by opening multi-tasking bar, and swiping the App upward to make it disappear.  (For iOS 6 older, hold down the icon for the App for about 3-5 seconds, and then tap the red circle with the white minus sign.)
    - Relaunch the App and try again.
    - Restart the device. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    - Reset the device. (Same article as above.)
    - Reset All Settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings)
    - Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)
    - Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137  For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.
    - Test the issue after each step.  If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.
