Random restarts on Blackberry Pearl 8120

Yes, I have a Blackberry Pearl 8120 that I got used for fifty dollars after my old Blackberry Pearl 8100 died. Anyway, to make a long story short it randomly resets itself. The screen goes black, and the LED in the right-hand corner goes red...and then it turns on a few seconds later with a white screen and an hourglass in the center. After a minute or two, it reboots the homescreen and operating system as if nothing happened.
This happens at random intervals, and I do not know what is causing it. Sometimes it will happen several times in a row and other times it will not happen for several hours. It can happen at any time whether you are in the middle of a phone call or if you simply have it on a table and you are not even touching it.
I have done the following steps to determine the problem:
1. I have removed the media card to determine if that was the problem - No change
2. I have removed the SIM card to determine if that was the problem - No change
3. I have reinstalled the operating system - No change
4. I have tried clearing the message log - No change
5. I have made sure that the battery was not loose - No change
6. I have switched batteries - No change
7. I have tried wiping the memory - No change
The only apps I have on it are the original ones that it came with. I do not know what else it could be as I have done all that my carrier suggested. I would rather not have to get a new phone as I like this phone and I do not need all of the extra stuff on it that newer models have. If anybody can help me with this issue, let me know.

Hello Neurovore,
Welcome to the forums.
From the sounds of it you have done everything there is to do. One question, when you did the software reload did you restore a backup file? If the answer is yes the I would suggest doing the software reload again and this time do not restore the backup file and test to see if you have the same issue. If after doing the software reload you still have the same issue then I suspect that it is a hardware issue and you will need to contact your service provider to see if they have a repair center than can look at the device for you.
Hope this helps. Have a good day.

  • Blackberry pearl 8120 screen auto shut off

    Hi,
The screen of my blackberry pearl 8120 shuts off automatically (almost once every day). When this happens, I have to press the start button and it would come back to the main screen with in few seconds and get registered with AT&T. I have updated the device software, removed the media card but still have the problem. Please let me know how to avoid this.
    Thanks
    Shravan

    Hi,
Go to options status. Type the letters test, there is no field for input.
You will see a menu for a diagnostic test, select all options. The
Report can be saved or emailed to your carrier.

  • Blackberry pearl 8120 crash

ok so my blackberry is only restarting but not actually coming on & its not readin on my computer..any advise on how to get it working???

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    Try safe mode:
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in safe mode
If you installed something new just before this behavior started, then you can remove it while in Safe Mode.
Also, be sure you are doing a proper clean reboot:
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
    Best!

  • Please help with Blackberry Pearl 8120

I can't seem to get this phone to sync with my macbook. I have Mac OS X 10.5.1 and I just purchased my phone from t-mobile. I downloaded the Pocketmac and the driver update. I installed both according to the directions on another post (installing both and then restarting), but the syncing is still failing. What should I do? TIA for any help ya'll can give me.
I forgot to mention that each time I try to sync, I get an error message at the end that says "skipping."

Ahhh!!! Now it's saying that my brand new media card has errors on it and to use a "disk error checking utility on a computer" to correct them. I don't even know what that means, but how can my card have errors??? I've only taken 2 pictures and not downloaded anything but this software!!!!!
Message Edited by kclassic225 on 07-15-2008 10:40 PM

I went from the BB Pearl the iPhone.  I am using the Pearl again and am having the same issues I've always had with PocketMac.  It shows errors when trying to change settings and won't activate the sync button.  Then, it just syncs on its own and wipes my iCal and Address Book clean.  I've had to restore from Time Machine twice this week.  I am back to using Missing Sync.  Too bad they can't get this software to work consistently.

  • Blackberry pearl 8120

I tried to download latest software for this phone using a usb lead from the laptop.  I had to unplug before it finished as it had taken nearly an hour , which should of only been 20 mins. The phone has never come back on, only a red light coming on and off. Any advice or suggestions welcome.

Hello rob76 and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
Device update times aren't set in stone and can vary to complete.
It sounds like the device was disconnected before the software update was finished being installed.
Remove the battery and try the update again as shown in KB11320 and reinsert the battery when you get to the "Waiting for device initialization" screen.
If you are still unable to get the software to reinstall, contact your mobile network carrier for further assistance.

  • Blackberry Pearl 8120-contacts names not showing

I just upgraded to this phone and half the time when my phone rings contact names do not show up, just the phone number.  What's going on?

Do you have those names/numbers in your BlackBerry Adress Book?
    also, read this:
There could be any one of three solutions... Try these:
    1. Make sure you set your own country code at Phone Dialer Screen > Options > Smart dialing.
Set your country code in this format: "+xx" where xx = your country code. Some countries have two or three digit Country Codes. Do not place the '+' in your contact's entry.
    * In the US, set this Country Code as "+1", and place your loca area code in the proper box (this normally the default setting in a new BB).
    2. At the same location, change the National Number Length to the number of digits for your country (since some countries will have less than 10 as set as the default in the BB). Find out the total digits, minus the country code. Do not place the '+' in your contact's entry.
    * For example, some countries have a total number to 8 (plus 3 for country code). You would enter "8".
    3. You may have "Content Protection" set on your Address Book.
Look at Options > Security > General Settings. Scroll down to Content Protection > Include Address Book = NO.

  • Pearl 8120 Problem

I have purchased, a blackberry pearl 8120 from t-mobile in replacement of my 8100... but unfortunatly i had to exchange the phone twice, and did the same problem. THEY BOTH WOULD NOT except any of my Micro SD Cards. Why is that? ive tried 3 different SD CARDS and formated them to the phone... it just kept on restarting over and over and over. now i have lost 200dollars DUE to the poor 8120 Hold to the MICRO SD Cards. Please tell me if someone has already figuired out what was going on.

i dont really have a solution to your problem but something u could try is to leave the card in, remove the battery then replace. but first, if you dont have anything important on your card, i would delete/format the entire card the try it this way you'll start off with a fresh card.

  • Pearl 8120 keeps crashing - HELP!!!!!!

I've had my Pearl 8120 for about a year or so and for the past 8 months or so it's been unexpectedly crashing, not so much at first, but it has gradually got worse to the point where the phone has become practically unusable, crashing almost every 5-10 mins. The crashing can happen at any time, whilst on a call, texting, emailing, web browsing, menu browsing etc.
    Here's what happens:
The screen suddenly goes black, and the red light at the top lights up, then the screen lights up and I get a turning hourglass. This will remain on the screen for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes, during which I cannot do anything (turn it off, even taking the battery out doesn't fix it, as it returns to doing it when I put the battery back in).  When it's done doing this, my home screen appears, giving me a message reading "Verifying Security Software", a loading bar which loads up to 100%.  After this, I can use the phone (until it crashes again!), but it doesn't have the memory of the previous call (in other words, it doesn't show up in my recent call list, nor does it remember who the last person I called was in my address book), and I lose whatever txt/email I was typing. I thought it might be a faulty battery so I bought a brand new battery but still the same problem.
This crashing seems to be entirely random and I know I'm not accidentally pressing anything to cause it. There are days where it happens every few hours, but there are some days where its every 5 mins!!! My phone seems to have moods!!!
Can anyone help me because this is most annoying? I feel like throwing my phone against a wall and watching as it smashes into a million pieces...does that explain how I feel??? :-)

Your OS .52 is quite old... upgrade.
Download and instructions are in this link. Pretty simple process. Just do your own backup FIRST, using Desktop Manager.

I bought a sim free pearl 8120 from the carphone warehouse in the summer and put a virgin mobile sim card in it everything works fine but the picture messaging i have contacted virgin and they have sent me what i need to put into the service book but i dont seem to be able to change it
Any information please let me know
Or if you know how to directly contact RIM because i got annoyed with the sites navigation........

Greetings, and welcome to the BlackBerry.com Support Forums.
What did they send you? Can you post the file name?
You can't contact RIM directly without a per incident charge fee. Your carrier handles the initial support and warranty on the device, and you must go through the carrier. You can call them and ask to be bumped up to a RIM support level.

  • Blackberry Pearl- Why it's the worst phone ever made

Here's why I think the Blackberry Pearl is the worst phone ever made.
    1. I can't get photo's off of it. My G1 takes a few seconds. I've worked with this Pear for hours upon hours cannot get my photo's off of it. The Desktop manager really bites too no help there. I really dislike this phone. The software just as bad. I guess they were on the move when Desktop manager was getting written.
    2. The phone on occasions would lock on letters instead of numbers. There wasn't an intuitive way to get it unlocked. I found it more intuitive to get a my return from the IRS than it was to get the phone back to dialing numbers.
I'm having my kids dress up as a Blackberry Pearl for Halloween. I'm going to make a Halloween Movie Freddy Kruger attacks people with Blackberry Pearl the topper scene features unsuspecting Pearl user getting tied up and has them attempt to copy their photos off to a PC and the video gets put on Youtube for Christmas.
    Very unsatisfied with your product.
    Don Quixote

I want to join the fun here and list all the different reasons why I'm very unsatisfied with this phone.
The actual phone part of this phone is pretty slow.  It accepts a phone number almost 3 times slower than I can type it in.  Even typing a name on their handy search bar takes forever to get a result.  If I type to fast, it just ignores a couple of my numbers so I have to delete and retype, at the same super slow pace.  I'm guessing that it searches all sorts of contact and history lists to give me cool suggestions, and that's what makes it so slow.  Either way, it irritates me to no end that the basic reason I have this thing is slow as dirt.
All 3rd Party and Blackberry apps require the Blackberry data service.  Even though there's WIFI on this phone, you simply can't connect to anything except the Browser (and even the Browser requires some setting changes to bypass the upsell screen).  This phone CAN do 3rd party services and other applications without the Blackberry data service, but they just don't allow you to.
Sometimes my phone just turns off.  I don't normally mind the 3 minute boot up process, but when I'm in the middle of something and my phone turns off for no reason, it just compounds my frustration.
The keyboard freezes up all the time.  After a good 1-5 minute "please wait clock", I finally get a message saying there was an error and my input application had to be reset.  Sometimes it doesn't quite reset all the way and I have to pull the battery and again wait for the long boot up process.
Its a little unreliable.  Besides the phone turning off at random and the keyboard freezing, I still have problems other problems.  My bluetooth turns off and sometimes doesn't come back.  Once I had to get a new phone sent to me in order to correct that problem.  Pressing buttons doesn't always get a response, especially the green "call" button.  If the phone is bogged down, it just ignored commands, which is pretty frustrating especially if you press a button and accidently double enter a command that is both the "on" and "off" options.  Also, sometimes the screen fades out (like its suppose to) but doesn't come back when you press keys.  Or the external notifications just don't turn on.  It somestimes just doesn't read my memory card.  The zoom feature on my camera also got stuck.
Other small gripes involve having no caps lock, the SureType never learning from my typing ("Hey" always goes out as "Get"), its overall slowness, the looseness of the back casing, the low quality camera, and so much more.
I don't suggest this phone to anyone.
