Ratings System

Does anyone know of any utility which can allow a change in the way songs are rated ? I'm looking for either more than 5 stars or the ability to award 1/2 stars to tracks. I have nearly 10,000 tracks and find the 5 stars system not enough - anyone else have this problem and found a solution ?
Thanks

Internally, iTunes stores the Ratings as a number from 0 to 100. Unfortunately, the GUI Apple has written only allows you to apply ratings of 0-5 stars -- internal values of 0, 20, ... 100.
One can pretty easily write a program to let you set the rating of a song. I did so, and I was surprised to find that iTunes actually displays a "1/2" symbol when you set the rating to "odd" values like 10, 30, 50, 70, or 90! Here's a link to a picture for a rating of 30, or 1.5 stars.
Unfortunately, writing a GUI to allow you to set ratings this way is a little more complex! I'm going to look at some of the Yahoo Widgets to see if I can use something there...

  • Troubles with my Aperture star ratings system

Been using aperture 2 for a couple of years now. No serious problems with it at all. Then, 2 weeks ago, all of a sudden my star ratings system started playing up and I have no idea why.
The problem is strange; it is still possible for me to rate photographs from 1 to 5 stars but when i come back to that folder and try to look at my 1 star or better pics then i see them all and the ratings i have assigned them. However, if i try to look at 2 star or better or 3 star or better etc photos then my screen is completely empty and if i want to export or sort my pics i now have to do it manually which seriously interrupts my workflow.
This issue applies to all my folders in aperture and I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thank you very much !!!

  • Database structure for a 5 star ratings system

This is something I've been asked to look at creating. At the moment the site has a database back end storing details of a few hundred holiday properties. So that part is already set up.
So I'm familiar enough with databases etc, but less so the formulas and any additional database structure for any voting.
It would be pretty simple, ie visitors could vote 1, 2, 3 4, or 5 stars for any property.
There needs to be a total score recorded somewhere for each property.
And the site needs to display the average score for that property.
Any pointers on this much would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Consider my wrist duly slapped.
Yes, Google is an excellent resource, although in my experience for many things such as this a search will return 101 different ways of doing something, many of which will do, or explain, 80% of what you need.
So sometimes posting on a forum is better for getting a recommendation from someone for a good tutorial on something.

  • Is there a way to move Bridge ratings to a different machine?

I'm working from home next week and I need to sort through hundreds of photos for a project.
I wanted to use Bridge's ratings system.
But then I need to move all of this back to work the following week.
Is there some kind of Bridge file I can copy and take with me so I can retain the ratings back at work?

Is there some kind of Bridge file I can copy and take with me so I can retain
    the ratings back at work?
The fastest and easiest way is to copy the files (using Bridge drag and
drop) to an external disk or other media and copy it your own system at
home. Work on it and copy them back (again using Bridge drag and drop) to
    the external disk.
At work use Bridge to copy them from your disk to your workstation.
If you use folders and enable the Build and export cache to folder you have
all the info you need including changes made in ACR etc etc.
All other methods I can think of (copy xmp side car files, collections)
won't do this to my knowledge.

  • On Export, seprate folders for different ratings?

Is something like this possible now in Aperture? In the export window I don't see an option for it.
It would be great to use the ratings system to offer the exported images sorted by ratings. My choices in one folder, out takes in another....

O.k., I've been fooling with this, and I don't think you can select multiple smart albums and export them. I cannot find any way to do what you want, nor do I see anything that looks appropriate in the manual; you can customize the folder/file names at export, but nothing about dividing out photos into different folders at export. I can think of one way you might work around this, although it's ugly and may not work in a high-volume environment.
If you're opening the exported images in another application that has access to keywords and can sort according to them, you could try assigning an additional keyword to each image based on your ratings and then exporting metadata with your images. This process could be simplified by making smart albums in the project, such as one for all of your 4-star+ photos, and one for everything <=3-stars. Then select all images in the first smart folder and assign a keyword ("best"), then do the same with the other folder ("outtakes"). Export the project (all go to the same folder), but you could sort by keyword later. This is potentially unwieldy if you're dealing with lots of photos and have to open them all at once to do the sort, and this process exports ALL metadata. If this seems remotely useful, read page 304 of the user manual for more info (in Aperture type apple-? or it's the first item in the Help menu).
A simpler solution may lie in Automator. I'm not familiar enough with it to give you specific direction, but you may be able to set up an Automator action that will export several projects/albums (e.g., smart albums set up by rating) for you automatically (so you don't have to remember). Check out this website for ideas: http://www.automator.us/aperture/

  • Star Ratings

    Hello folks-
Not sure if anyone else is having this issue getting into aperture but thought I'd ask...
I'm conceptually okay with the file structure but the thing that is doing my head in is the ratings system. I wonder if this is a function of my photographic inexperience? I shoot a variety of things as a hobbyist and for my own research but not in a professional sense. I initially ignored the ratings, but have come to realize that the system is quite key to the organization of a large number of images within aperture. Now I'm reimporting all my images and rating and tagging them as they come back in.
I did some reading about ratings and was a bit daunted by the 5 pass system suggested by the manual, so decided to try the three tier system suggested by Bagelturf, i.e. *= not awful; **= good; *= proud of. I boldly waded into about a thousand photos from a recent trip to the middle east and found that this was not sufficient. The not awful photos were just that, not awful but kind of boring. The photos to be proud of, I was proud of. The majority were just two star, good images. So at the end I had a slightly smaller pile of 'okay' images. Clearly, that ratings system did not really work for me.
So now I'm considering a four tier system, adding in a 'best of project/trip/place' category in betwixt good and proud and leaving the five star category for when I get better at photography...
Would anyone else be willing to share their rating technique or ideas?
    Thanks,
    arthur

I agree it is important not to get too tense about how accurate any given rating is. Also, I find that ratings change over the course of reviewing a project more than once. It is not all that important!
My protocol is as follows, but I would love to hear what other folks do.
    • Rejects: out of focus or otherwise technically not good.
    • No stars: not reviewed yet.
    • One star: too lame to show to the client but perhaps some future cut-and-paste partial usage.
    • 2 stars: lame but some clients might find it useful.
    • 3 stars: solid journeyman work but unexciting, maybe submit to client.
    • 4 stars: good technically and compositionally, for sure submit to client.
    • 5 stars: best of project.
What actually gets submitted to the client and/or used actually depends on the project, how many pix are needed and on the client. Star ratings are just a general ranking within a given project.
I find that I never know what I might want to use a pic for in the future. I know that I am capable of visually reviewing thousands of digital pix very quickly. In addition to keywords the star ratings help me refine the review process. If I am looking for trees for a background I might filter for 1 star and better, keyword trees; trees as a main ad image I might filter for 4 stars and better, keyword trees.
Another use for rankings is to determine which pix get edited. Typically 4 and above get tweaked, 3 and below do not get tweaked until a specific need for the image exists (e.g. the client likes it). However, every project is different.

  • Explain your rating system

I would love to know people's rating system, like what do you consider a three star picture, or a four? What's the difference between the two?
Right now, I have been using:
*** = Absolutely awesome picture. Must be printed, put in (wedding) album. Eligible for my own portfolio.
** = Very good too, can be printed, or put in (wedding) album
    * = Acceptable, will show to customer
That's it... I don't have one or two.
Would love to compare. Even though I have a few thousand pics already rated, I'm sure that if I see a better rating system, I can easily change, using smart albums.
    Thanks,
    Toine

This is a useful discussion. I use ratings for two reasons--to of course seperate the bad from the good, but also in terms of how photos my be used album and website creation.
5=well done, photographers (sometimes two or three almost identical photos get tagged 5, so I and the client can look closely at what should finally go in the album.
4= good, not oustanding, but good for the album, website, etc.
3=okay photo for 4x6 or similar to other better photos on a stack
2=not that good, but better keep just in case it's needed
1=I'm not sure what do with this one now that I'm using Aperture's reject.
I'm still reflecting how to use the ratings system to improve my workflow to evaluate my photos. I'm going to read the DAM book to see what is suggested. But overall I still find it a little tedious to do, especially whe you're rating over a thousand photos. I really try to be more conscious now of the amount of shots I'm taking at a wedding. Though I'm new to the business, I'm getting the feeling that clients really don't need 400+ photos. They need the best of the lot and what is most important to them. Personally, I wish I could just have clients go through the photos and select them before I do. That way I'm not spending so much time on photos they're probably never print any way. Though clients like my picks, they also don't choose photos that I spent time working on. So it would be nice to have them make choices up front.

  • Not possible to give ratings to posts in Forums He...

... which is illogical to me. Many people post here because they can't find another area that suits the topic and people take trouble to give very helpful replies, but don't get rewarded and therefore might get discouraged to continue to help. Look at the number of posts/threads that the mods have to shunt elsewhere, often to a sort of best-of-a-bad-bunch alternative.
(Not that many people use the ratings anyway - very many helpful posts just get apparently ignored with a zero rating count.)
These forums really do need a shake up. Although there are some very helpful and friendly people aboard, the way the forums are set up is just clunky and badly-oiled, which makes them sort of awkward and un-user-friendly  to use.
It's been mentioned before by many people including me, but nothing gets done. I'll probably be banned now for being repetitive. If so, bye all, it's been nice knowing you. I'm only trying to be helpful and improve the forum experience, and follow Ian Livingston's advice to speak up when I'm worried.

    Hi Pasha_Selim
    Thanks for the post.
The reason there are no ratings in the Forum Help & Suggestions board is as follows:
“You’ll also note that we’ve turned our rating system off for the Forum Help & Suggestions forum.  While we value your participation in this forum – please keep the suggestions coming – we agree with the feedback we’ve heard that ranks should primarily be based on help related to products and services.”  (taken from the Rankings announcement)
As ratings have an influence on rank movement it was decided to remove them from the Forum Help & Suggestions board.
If someone has posted in the Help & Suggestions board with a query that is related to BT products and services then the mods will move it to the correct board.  When the post has been moved into one of the main boards it is then possible for ratings to be given, so anyone providing help can still be awarded a rating.
I agree that use of the ratings system is a very easy way to say thanks to those providing helpful answers and I would love to see more use of it.  If anyone wants to help promote this system why not add something to your signature to alert others to the ratings system, e.g ‘if you think I’ve been helpful, say thanks by clicking on the star to the left of this post.’
Thanks for the feedback about people finding the best place to make their post – with this in mind I have posted an announcement in the Forum Help & Suggestions board which explains the purpose of this board and what type of thing should be posted here.
    Thx

  • New Ratings Discussion - Ratings Conversion

    Hello Everyone,
It is time to start the discussion regarding the ratings change.  The first item I would like to solicit your feedback is in regards to how to convert the old ratings into our new ratings.
New Ratings:  Lithium calls the new ratings system "Kudos".  We do not have to keep this term, but for ease of discussion I will call the new ratings Kudos for now.  For any message, you will have the option to give it one Kudo.  Think of it as a "Yes, this helped!" rating.  There is no negative option, if you don't like the message, you would not give it a Kudo. If you give a message a Kudo, the author of that message also collects one Kudo.
We have to convert our old 1 - 5 star ratings into Kudos.  The conversion will work as follows:
Every message that has an average rating of X or higher will get the number of Kudos equal to the number of ratings X or higher.
The author of a message that has an average rating of X or higher will get Kudos equal to the number of ratings.
We can choose whatever average rating X we like for the conversion.  Lithium has recommended an average rating of 4.0.  Do you feel 4.0 is an average rating that tells you a particular message is a "good" message?  Should this be lower, higher?
Thanks in advance for your feedback.   I will start a new thread for each topic I would like feedback on so that I can collect the feedback as needed.
    Regards,
    Laura

EDIT: The conversion will take place for an average rating of 4.0 and higher as chosen in our poll.

This seems to imply that the assignment of the "kudos" is open to anyone, and basically you can have a situation where, for example, a few folks can get together to drive up each other's kudos count. I believe there was a subthread discussion about only letting the author provide a "yes this helped" rating. I think Experts Exchange works this way, if I'm not mistaken. Was this considered? If so, what was the reason for not implementing it?
To answer your direct question: Given the mess with the ratings I don't think it's really worth it to debate about whether to use 4.0, 3.5, 3.75, or 3.8794465. From my perspective 4.0 seems like a reasonable number.
    I agree with Saverio, 100 %.
More, I think it's important to keep a way to say "this reply is dangerous!", or mostly incorrect.  One star (or two stars) was there for that, even if, of course, that rating system had to be improoved.

PS.: if I have to provide a threshold, yes, let's say 4.0

  • Is it possible to add a Filmratings like PG or R using template made in FCP

I want to know if FCP has a prebuilt film ratings template we can use?

Obviously since you cannot pretend you have an official rating . . but may on the other hand want to give end viewers some warning as to content . . you could make your own ratings system.
In other words if its a horror give it a "hiding behind the couch" rating if it has adult themes give it a "blush factor" . . . . etc

  • Is this really a friendly community?

Something is wrong isn't it? I mean despite the mods prominently alerting users to the ratings system hardly anyone uses it, and helpful posts too rarely receive acknowledgement, even by a post that says "Thanks for the help xxx".
I'm not moaning because I haven't been given a rating or thanked for a useful post - and I think I've made a few - but it just seems to me that there's no real friendly buzz on the forums, and these are symptoms of that.
I'll just drift away because I just don't wish to waste my time and get treated like xxxx. The old Beta forums had a better feel, despite some gripes.

  • Product rating stars? How?

I am trying to get some rating stars to be used on my large product page. I have tried the {tag_rating} but that doesn't seem to work for me.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

{tag_rating} only works on blog post layouts. So, there's nothing built-in to BC for rating products by stars.  At this stage, I'm not sure it's possible. I would normally suggest using Web Apps to create a rating for each product and embed that web app into each products' description but in order to make changes to the web app item (update the average rating, etc) it requires users to be logged in which you might not want to do.
Have you looked into third-party ratings systems like http://rating-widget.com? Seems like you might get the desired functionality with that javascript. It looks like they host everything on their site so you are dependant on their site not going down but I'm interested to see if you can use that script to get unique ratings widgets for each product.

  • And the point is?

What does rating your songs on your ipod using the stars do?

Also, it's very useful to rate songs when creating smart playlists. Or use it as a reminder to delete songs you no longer want by giving them a low rating.
Quite a lot of uses for the ratings system actually.

  • Ideas for iTunes

Just a few ideas for the next version of iTunes.
-Tags: right now, one can only select one genre for a specific piece of music. Allowing tags to be added, or multiple categories, would allow browsing and searching to be much more accurate. The same thing goes for artists. I recognize that notes could be used for this purpose, but I think something more systematic would be better.
-Ratings: 0-5 stars? Great. Add another level, and limit the number of tracks it can be applied to. Call it "Favorites." Limit it to 10 or 20 tracks (or give the user the option to set a limit). You could also use this in the iTunes store, identifying the tracks most people name as "favorites" (of course, this would also work with 5 stars).

Both of your suggestions can be implemented to some extent using smart playlists.
For multiple genres, you can add additional genres as keywords in Grouping or Comments. You would then set your conditions so the "Match Any", "Genre is X" and "Grouping contains Y" Check Live Updating.
The work-arounds for your ratings idea is not quite as simple. To increase the number of ratings levels you would have to add your own ratings system using the Groupings or Comments fields. To limit the number of tracks with a certain rating would take two playlists. The first one, named, say, "Favorites", would have the conditions "My Rating is 5 stars" and "Limit to 20 songs selected by most often played" with Live Updating. To see if you have tagged more than 20 songs with a 5-star rating, create a second smart playlist with the conditions "Match All", "My Rating is 5 stars" and "Playlist is not Favorites" with Live Updating. You would have to manually change the ratings in this second playlist.
Multiple genres is not something set up in the standardized tagging system used in digital music, so Apple would have to create something proprietary which would not be recognized if you loaded your music in another player.
This is the first time I have seen a request for limiting the number of songs for a rating. As many more common requests have not yet been implemented, I do not see Apple implementing this request, but you should still request it so they can make the decision.
