RAW + JPG shooting and Lightroom

I would like to know if there are any advantages shooting RAW + JPG on my Nikon D200 then importing into Lightroom? Does Lightroom really work (or is ideal) for processing JPGs?
I am considering shooting RAW + JPG especially of my children due to the amount of photos I take of them and the time it actually takes to process a RAW image. I figure RAW + JPG will give me the choice of having a finished JPG and a RAW image for archival purposes or even additional editing (if necessary). Obviously, Lightroom will know the difference between the two by the extension, but if I want to process JPGs in Lightroom, is there a better alternative for JPG processing...maybe Lightroom, maybe something else?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Rolandy,
Sounds to me like you're suffering the same dilemna as I. I like my Nikon (D80) and want to fire away w/jpgs. Then I try some simple tests and find that there are images that get botched by the in-camera jpg conversion. Here's an example:
http://home.comcast.net/~kmsjss/test/index.html
I shot this pair in NEF+jpg mode (small jpg), with Sun WB, Normal other settings, sRGB IIIa. I ran the NEF into LR and used my presets plus a medium contrast curve and increased exposure (this all took about 3 mouse clicks). That red butler has grey painted details of the lapels, etc. As you can see, they're blown out in the jpg, and not recoverable (I had even more latitude w/the NEF). Also, the color of the butler is Ferrari red (shifted slightly toward yellow). I shot this as a test (forgive my shadow) as the scene has wide brightness range, and red, green, and blue. I've found that Nikon's IIIa color space is vivid, and inaccurate, especially for reds. The Ia space is more accurate, but not vivid. (confirmed by numerous pix, not just this pair).
So, I shoot NEF, use LR w/defined presets, and don't lose sleep over that rare great shot ;) that gets messed up by Nikon jpg conversion. LR is fast w/presets. Import the shoot, select one, Develop it, in Library select all the others, Command-Option-V, and you're in the ballpark w/the other shots. I prefer the colors I'm getting over Nikon's IIIa conversion, and I'm still tweaking the settings...
I'm also a hobbyist, so caveat emptor. I trust you're monitor is calibrated.

  • Camera Raw 6.0 (and Lightroom 3) extra slow, what's happening ?

    Hi,
I'm having a very annoying issue with both CR 6.0 and LR 3 which is a very slow responsiveness in the photo previews.
A month ago, I was using Windows XP SP3 32bit on my machine (Intel Core Duo Q6600 (4x2.57Ghz cores) - 4Gb RAM). I had Photoshop CS4 with Camera Raw 5.x and Lightroom 2. Everything was very smooth.
Then, I moved to Windows Seven 64bit and CS5 with CR 6 and LR 3.
Now, I have exacly the same issue I had before bying my current 4 core PC, which is :
in Camera Raw, even scrolling the left thumbnails part is extremely slow (rendeing of image thumbnails), and appying the slightest change of a slider (even basic ones) takes about a second and sometimes two seconds to be applied to the image preview. Quite painful to use !
Same applies to adjustments and thumbnails in LR 3.
The thing is, the behaviour occurs even with  Canon EOS 300D RAW files which are only 6 Megapixels !
I didn't try to go back to LR2 and CS4 to check yet, but well, looks quite surprising since LR3 was supposed to be a lot faster and responsive.
As it is a clean install, I have the latest set of video drivers (it's a ATI Radeon X4800).
Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do to fix this ?
    Thanks !

Just out of curiosity, what was so awfully penalizing reponsiveness in ACR 6.0 ?
And, does Lightroom use the same internal 8bi plugin file to do the processing or do I have tu update Lightroom separately to get the responsiveness back ?
I don't know what they did, but I assume they rewrote some of the code which deals with some of the new process calculations and previewing, to be more processor-efficient.
Lightroom doesn't use the plug-in, as far as I know. I'd guess that would need a separate update. I haven't got it. You could tell us if it's any faster.

  • D7100 support in Camera Raw plug-in and Lightroom

When will D7100 be supported cameras in Camera Raw plug-in and Lightroom

If Adobe have managed to get their hands on a copy, there's a vague chance it might make the LR 4.4 final release which is expected soon (it's currently in RC, but sometimes extra camera's get added).  Other than that, you'll be waiting on the next release I'm afraid.  They don't generally pre-announce camera support.

  • Trying to upload raw cr2 files and Lightroom says "file is not recognized"

Backstory: I photographed a VERY important commercial shoot today and I went to upload the photos to Lightroom. The first 30 images uploaded just fine, but the rest won't. Lightroom says the file is not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom (401). Everything is updated in my computer... Lightroom, Photoshop ect. Photoshop also says that the file cannot be read. I can't open them in iPhoto or preview either. BUT I can see the thumbnail when I click the camera card reader on the desktop. I am uploading from a card reader as well. I shot with this card yesterday and everything was fine. I NEVER delete photos off my camera, and I always format it. If it is corrupted, how do you I find that out, and is there anyway to get my photos back?
Is there anything I can do to fix this? I am panicking. Help, please.
    Thank you in advance

The two raw files you've uploaded to dropbox are corrupted so Lightroom and Photoshop are giving you the correct message.  At least with these two, the embedded JPG preview is there but the raw data is not correct so cannot be rendered.  Here is the error that Canon's own software gives when the files are attempted to be edited:
You should reattempt to copy the images from the memory cards to your computer using a card reader and an operating-system function (Explorer or Finder) to do it rather than LR or a cable connected to the camera, then see if things work any better.  If you already used a card reader, then try a different one and see if the situation improves.
If you cannot get a better set of images by retransferring them, then we can work through how to extract the embedded JPG previews en masse.

  • Difference in Camera Raw 7.2 and Lightroom 4.2

Camera Raw 7.2 seems to have introduced a colour management issue since the Adobe Standard camera profile is no longer present in Camera Raw 7.2, whereas it still appears in the Lightroom 4.2 version.
This means that raw files exports from Lightroom 4.2 to Photoshop CS6 as an external editor get converted from Adobe Standard (the Lightroom default) into one of the ACR presets in Camera raw resulting in a marked colour shift.
Since it does not appear possible to select the profile being used by Camera Raw on the fly when using Photoshop as an external editor from within Lightroom then this cannot be corrected.
The only solution seems to be to define a default profile such as Camera Standard v4 in Camera Raw and ensure that all images in Lightroom are assigned this profile when importing so that the colour remains consistent when editing in Photoshop.
The two dialogs are shown below.
This did not appear to be an issue in earlier versions of Camera Raw (at least, not on my old MBP with CS5 and LR3), so why has the Adobe Standard profile been removed and how can we select a different profile when using Photoshop CS6 as an external editor in Lightroom 4.2 in order to maintain colour consistency?

Did you perhaps delete or un-install anything related to Adobe lately? ACR and LR shuld be seeing the exact same set of DNG profiles unless things have been removed or moved. You could try downloading the most recent version of DNG Converter 7.2 and do an install. This should replace all DNG profiles current with ACR 7.2.

  • Raw + JPG: principles and purpose

    Dear all,
I have received a few thousand pictures in RAW+JPG.
I understand that I can either view them as separate files (check the relevant option in the preferences and re-sync the folder) or view them as one single entity, then marked by LR as "RAW+JPG" (uncheck the relevant option, re-sync...).
Is it correct that when I am in RAW+JPG mode, where they are one single object, I actually only work on and see the RAW? The JPG is then "useless", sitting in the folder but not modified and not directly accessible?
And the only way to acces it is to swap the preferences as mentioned above, for the whole folder?
Any hint on the principles are welcome!
    Thanks,
    Olivier.

    Olivier,
You are correct, but also note that the switch is not kept by folder but for the LR installation and affects all imports/synchronize folders you perform from then on.
The only "useful" feature I can see in keeping the JPEGs as sidecars is that file system opertions (deletes/moves) will affect both the Raw and the JPEG.

  • Differences between Camera RAW 6.4 and Lightroom 3.4

    Hello,
I just installed the Lightroom 3.4 update and the Photoshop Elements/Camera Raw 6.4 update. I always thought the underlying RAW-engine was the same, but is that true? I have a Canon CR2-RAW file. When opening it into Camera Raw 6.4 the result differs from the result I get with Lightroom 3.4. In Camera RAW a relatively large part of the picture is colored red because of clipping in the highlights. When opening the same picture in Lightroom, only a very small part is clipping. The settings (Exposure/Recovery etcetera) are exactly the same.
Also, the histograms of the picture differ from eachother.
    Who can help?
    Igor

Lightroom actually uses four color spaces:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3415073
But don't confuse 'Color Space' with 'Camera Profiles' – You can't change the color space in LR, and do not want to! The 'Camera Profiles' provided in LR are the 'in-camera' equivalents (Camera Standard, Faithful, Landscape, etc) and Adobe's Standard. Some more information here on Camera Profiles:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/358016?tstart=0
The differences you are seeing between LR and ACR are real, but if you set the PSE color space to Adobe RGB this should be minimal. If this is not acceptable then your only option is a full upgrade to PS CS5 or PS CS5 Extended, which supports ProPhoto RGB profile. PSE does not!
Has your monitor been calibrated using hardware monitor calibrator for ~100 cd/m2 @ 6500K? If NO, STOP and go get one! If YES, read on. I personally have never liked the results using LR Camera Profiles with my Canon DSLRs (300D, 600D, 5D MKII). You can create custom develop presets using one or more of the available LR camera profiles, and they might work very well for you. You will need to shoot a standard subject, compare screen image to live subject real-time, make adjustments, and save as a new preset. Then you should be able to get pretty close for that one (1) subject type! I use the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport to create custom camera profiles with each of my camera bodies for Daylight, Cloudy and Tungsten lighting. With over 35 years of color darkroom experience the difference to my eyes is like night and day!

  • RAW + JPG in Adobe Lightroom. Which one is used while Heavily editing ( Developing ) ?

Considering JPGs do not endure the heavy editing ( Developing ) or for sure they end up badly damaged, do I have to separate my CR2s from JPGs in lightroom ?
How Lightroom knows that it should apply the " Developing " operations to the RAW copy of the file and ignore the JPG - if that's at all what it does ?

Actually, Lightroom treats JPGs quite tenderly. It never re-saves them. All edits are kept in "parametric" form and only applied when you export, but that only happens once and does practically no damage.
When you import both raw and JPG, if you have the preference set to treat them separately, you can edit them separately. If the preference is set the other way, the JPG is never touched and simply gets moved along with the raw image if you move it using Lightroom.

  • Sony ARW Raw from A700 and Lightroom 1.4

I have not seen this in the Forum, so I want to tell You of this problem.
After upgrading from Lightroom 1.3.1 to Lightroom 1.4 I got error messages in grid view randomly in maybe one in every 70 photo's When switching to Develop mode, these files gave the following message: "an unexpected end of file has occurred" and it was impossible to make changes in Develop mode. This did not happen in Lightroom 1.3.1. In fact I had made changes to these files the previous day in 1.3.1. After reading the messages at this Forum, I installed Lightroom 1.3.1 over the 1.4 configuration and the error messages were no longer there, so it were no corrupt files. I could devellop them in the Sony RAW converter without a problem.
Further I did a folder syngronisation and it imported al the files a seccond time, so I had 2 sets of photo's whith the same filenumber in te same folder. I am sure the "don't import expected duplicats" was on. I had to manualy delete them from the Library.
Has anybody got the same problem? Jan-Henk.

After reading other post I want to make it clear, I do not convert to DNG. The computer I use is a Pentium 4 dual core with 2 Gb memory.

Eric, it's been a few days since the release of LR 5.3 and ACR 5.3, and I cannot download ACR 5.3 via Help>Updates, as is recommended. LR was able to acknowledge that an update was available within hours of its availability, but my copy of CS4 Extended (as part of Production Premium) hasn't yet.
Is there a delay in providing automatic updates through Help>Updates, or could there be a problem with my copy of CS4 Extended?
I would appreciate any assistance given with this, as I prefer the automatic download process, compared to the additional steps necessary when downloading the installer.

  • Compatibility between Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 5 on a Mac

    Hi,
    A beginners question:
I am about to buy a Canon EOS 1200D Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens. I am currently trying out Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5. I have Ps CS4 and I am thinking of buying Lr 5 in the future after the trial and I want to work with RAW photographs in the main.
Are there any compatibility issues that I should know about with the software versions I have/might buy and the RAW images taken by this model of camera? I need to have the answer(s) to this question before I buy the camera and the correct software.
For your information, I intend using a late 2013 MacBook Pro with a retina screen and 16 Gig RAM.
    Many thanks,
    David
    (Brighton, UK)

The EOS 1200D was first supported in Camera Raw 8.4 and Lightroom 5.4
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
Camera Raw 8.4 is only compatible with Photoshop CS6 and newer
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
So you'll be fine with Lightroom 5.4 or later.
However PS CS4 is not compatible with Camera Raw 8.4 and never will be. So you'll either have to upgrade to CS6 or join the Cloud.
Or you can use the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all EOS 1200D Raw files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS4

  • How can I REPLACE original RAW files with JPG's and keep my 'Develop mode' edits?

    An image describing my problem:
    http://i.imgur.com/hcqMYkv.jpg
    (Lightroom 5)
'edits' = Edits made in develop mode.
'CR2' = My RAW image file format.
I have existing CR2's with edits for them saved in Lightroom.
I want to replace the CR2's with JPG's, and do nothing else. I want those JPG's to inherit the CR2's edits, but I DO NOT want the edits to be permanently applied to the image.
If I export the CR2's (which have edits) to JPG's, the edits will be permanently applied to them. I do not want this.
If I export the CR2's to JPG's without the edits, I have no way of getting the edits back and will have to redo the work if I use that photo again.
Any solutions? I've been trying for a while and have no idea how to do this.
Q: Why not keep the CR2's?
A: I am uploading these files to an online host (S3) as my primary storage method and uploading CR2's takes way too long with my internet speeds. Furthermore, online storage costs money.
Q: Why not shoot with JPGs instead of shooting raw?
A: I do my initial edits with the raw files and then archive them as JPG's to save storage space. They won't be raw anymore if I apply future edits, but I still have the option of retouching them from the 'original' state and still have my old edits preserved.

Probably the best thing for you to do is simply use lossy DNG format (e.g. export as, or convert to..): raw data is re-formatted with jpeg compression (full-rez or reduced-rez), but all raw settings apply.
If you insist on trying to have a true jpeg file with (mostly) raw settings, then:
The simplest way I can think of to do it without a script or plugin:
    * Reset the raw photo (consider preserving things that don't translate well, like profile-based lens corrections and white balance).
    * Export jpeg
    * Un-reset the image (e.g. using edit history or pre-reset snapshot).
    * Sync settings from raw to jpeg (note: omit settings that don't transfer well, or that were not reset..).
    * Optionally: Delete raw
To automate/streamline would require a script or plugin.

  • How Do I Do Tethered Shooting and transfer JPG only to Laptop?

The subject of this thread says it all.  Using the EOS Utility (and a Canon camera, of course), I have options to shoot RAW+JPG and transfer both, or JPG Only to the computer.  Does Lightroom 5.3 have this ability?  If so, where is it?
