RDS - Issue using Windows 10 build 9926 as Virtual Desktop Infrastructure on Hyper-V 2012 R2

We currently have a production Windows 8.1 as a VDI/RDS on Hyper-V 2012 R2. On testing the last build of Windows 10 (98??) we had no issues deploying this in same RDS as pooled desktops.
The latest build 9926, although correctly sysprep-ed (either by removing AppX modern apps that have been updated, or not connecting the template to the internet), the build is only ever partially successful. Some VMs build others do not, and the ones that
build cannot be managed via RDS/Server Manager, functions such as logging a user off  with server manager, result in an error. (WTS API failed)
Build Error on connection Broker - Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-SessionBroker
VM host [HOSTSERVER05] failed to execute VM Provisioning operation [Task: To perform post processing actions at VMHostAgent:] for virtual machine [VDI-W10-57] in pool [VDI_Advanced_Te], Error: [Error code: 0x88130221.]
Any guidance on how to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated, although I suspect something regarding the auto-deployment/unattend and management systems though RDS no longer works with the latest Windows 10 build.
Already posted this in the
Windows Insider Program site, but was asked to re-post here. Thanks

OK, I've carried out some more testing on the client site and have been able to move a couple of existing VMs from their 2008 R2 Hyper-V server to the new 2012 R2 server.
Both VMs are Windows 7 SP1 with the RDP 8.0 update installed and I can connect to them from a Thin Client running RDP 7.1 and a laptop running RDP 8.0.
When I add the RemoteFX vGPU to them both I can still connect from both devices but, as suggested, when connecting from the laptop with RDP 8.0 I don't get the vGPU performance (but the vGPU is still shown in the device manager).
It all looks good at the moment but I'm still concerned as to why I was unable to connect to the first VM I moved over (it was complaining about a error in the License network communication or similar).
I'll keep testing and post anything else that might be useful.
Cheers for now

Has anybody experienced problems in using Windows Explorer with VPC Virtual PC?
Lacking any "forbidden" or "appropriate usage" guidelines, I regularly use Windows Explorer (Windows 2000) to transfer file from the desktop. I have occasionally sensed that this might be wrong. Today I inadvertently clicked the MAC harddrive instead of the Desktop (within Windows Explorer) and caused all manner of mischief.
    Any other views please?

    Let me correct this:

Hi and Welcome to the Community...and apologies for the delay!
Hopefully you already have this resolved, but just in case...
Do I understand that you wish to, on a BB itself, run a virtual Windows 7 environment? Or do you instead desire to activate a remote control session over a Windows 7 computer from your BB device?
Please clarify (though I don't think either are actually possible...).
    Good luck!

I am seeking following information on Adobe Reader 9.4.5 in regards to MS Virtual Desktop Infrastructure compatibility, below are questions:
    1. Is the application – Adobe Reader 9.4.5 supported on Windows 7 x64 desktop virtualised on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V presented by Citrix XenDesktop 5.5/5.6 ?
    2. Is the virtualization of the application supported ? [We are Planning to virtualize the Application using Microsoft App-V/Citrix ] ?
    3. Is the application supported if installed on Virtual Machines [VDI] ?
    4. Does the Application’s current License Policy support if the Application is virtualized ?
    5. Does the Application’s current License policy support the Application on Virtual Machines?
If not is there any license policy that supports the Application on Virtual Machines ?

You can remove the corrupted installation using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.

  • Pass Through Auth Not Using Novell eDirectory Over RDP - Virtual Desktop

    Hi,
I have installed and configured SGD and the Virtual Desktop Adapter to a Virtual Center server. So far that whole side of things is working great. Machines are cloned, prepped and connected to by users through the My Desktop link in SGD. Now that I am attempting to perfect the master template I have encountered some issues. The network here is Novell eDirectory and at the moment when the desktop is launched the username and password used to authenticate to the SGD webtop are passed through to the Virtual Machine, but it seems that they are passed through to the Windows Authentication System/GINA even though the Novell client is in place.
The virtual machines are Windows XP and by default none of the user accounts exist locally, so of course the login fails. This drops the user back to the login box where it can be seen that the Workstation Only tick box is checked. Settings in the Novell client to always default to eDirectory authentication, forget last setting used etc has all been set properly. Even when hiding the Workstation Only tickbox the username and password are passed to local system authentication still.
I need to get the username and password sent to the Novell eDirectory authentication system/GINA in order for Zenworks to create the user on the local system. When dropping back to the login box and manually unticking the Workstation Only box login proceeds normally. Drives are mapped and the local user account is created by the Zenworks agent.
Is SGD specifically targeting an authentication subsystem within the virtual machine, regardless of your installed authentication handler/GINA preference order? Can I get SGD to pass the details to the Novell client? Barring that is there some way I can prevent SGD passing the details? I tried turning off some of the authentication details caching etc but some of that is needed to rename the virtual machines after the user connecting. For the time being having users authenticate twice would be acceptable, having them login in, then get an error message, then manually unticking Workstation Only then relogging in is not acceptable.
I have been searching these forums, Novell forums, Terminal Server forums for answers but so far nothing has been of any help. Please note that the login box is not the cut down/windows only login box that users are seen when they connect over RDP to a machine that already has a user logged in locally. There is no user logged in locally and the full login box is presented once the login failed message is cleared.
Any help, or even a nudge in the right direction would be great.
    Thanks
    Russ

    Hi,
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I tried the full context user name path as well, but its defiantly just being passed to a different GINA. The only credentials that determine if you have RDP access to a server is the local machines credentials, so Microsoft have the service pass authentication straight to the Microsoft GINA non-interactively instead of honouring the installed GINA's. So it will fail no matter what I put in since the account doesn't exist locally yet. People have implemented solutions that depend on Active Directory domains, but that's what I am trying to avoid.
In that situation the AD Domain would allow access to the local machine based on Windows permissions, and a registry setting TSAutoLogin or something would trigger the Novell log in in parallel to map the Netware shared volumes. With no domain you can't get the initial log in triggered for the Novell client to kick in.
Connecting to the virtual machine using an RDP client without pre-entering authentication information does show the Novell Login (NWGINA) with all the right settings in place, so I have modified the expect (login) script for SGD not to automatically pass log in information through with the RDP connection it makes. The result is a clean Novell login box without any errors that a user can just enter their details into a second time.

  • Cannot create virtual desktop station from template WMS 2012

This is a fresh install of Multipoint 2012 Prem. with all current updates including Rollup 2. I created a win7 ent. desktop template without problem.  When I attempt to create a virtual desktop station I get the popup saying it is creating the station
and after about 10 seconds it says it was successful but there is no station listed.
This same machine was a part of my domain and I had successfully created stations previously but the server was never put into production.  When I needed it for another application off the domain I removed the stations and took it out of the domain.
From that point I was unable to add stations. I removed the old template and created a new one. Finally I reinstalled Multipoint and started from scratch and still have the same issue. The rollup and some server updates were the only differences so I removed
the rollup but no change. Help!
    Mike

You might have already checked it but just in case, did you check the server console when this happens ?
If there is any problem with the template file, it doesnt create a desktop even though it doesnt complain about this explicitly in the Portal Admin.

  • Virtual machine packaging in Hyper-V 2012?

    Hi all,
I am running a custom Linux VM on Hyper-V 2012. Do we have a virtual machine packaging mechanism in Hyper-V 2012 Server, similar to OVF in ESXi?
I tried MSVMC tool. But looks like it only works for Windows guests.
Do we have any other option for getting a VM package in Hyper-V ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Saleem

You Export the VM - that creates a folder of files (not unlike OVF).
You can then zip this or TAR it.  Hand it off, extract it, Import it on the other end.
The process is the same, but the XML is not 'ovf' - it is very similar however.
BTW - OVF is an open standard.  And VMware has an proprietary implementation of it.  So, taking that into consideration as well.  The process is no different.

  • Any known issues using Windows Media Player?

There are some websites I visit on a regular basis, but for better viewing they require Windows Media Player
(this is the warning: "....has content of MIME type “application/x-mplayer2”, but you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type. A plug-in should be available on this page:....")
To Download or not to Download, that's my dilemma.
    Any advise is appreciated.

    Hi Mildred -
If you are simply wondering about whether you should download and install Windows Media Player, then go ahead. It's very useful to have. Just be sure that you are downloading from a trusted source. If you have already downloaded and installed WMP but the Windows Media Plugin wasn't installed, then you should probably reinstall WMP. If you have downloaded and installed WMP and you have the Windows Media Plugin installed but you are unable to watch certain content, it may be because the Mac version of WMP doesn't support certain file-types.
I would just add that while application/x-mplayer2 is a component of Windows Media Player, the Windows Media Plugin in my Installed Plug-ins list (Safari > Help > Installed Plug-ins) doesn't assign any extensions to that MIME type. This leads me to believe that the Mac version of WMP may not support the file types associated with the MIME type, application/x-mplayer2.

  • Users using Windows Authentication unable to login after upgrade to SQL Server 2012 SP2 CU1

We upgraded from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 SP2 CU1.  Upgrade was successful.  Users that have SQL Server Management Studio 2012 can successfully log in via Windows Authentication, but users with an older version of SQL Server Management
Studio are unable to log in via Windows Authentication.
The error they receive is listed below:
    Connect not connect to XXXXXXX
Login Failed.  The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows Authentication.
    (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452)
If we switch to Mixed authentication, users can log in via SQL Server Authentication.
Our security policy prohibits SQL Authentication.
Outside of having the staff upgrade to SQL Server 2012 SQL Server Management Studio, is there any setting I can set/unset to allow older version of SQL Server Management studio to connect to SQL Server 2012?
    Thanks.

  • SUSE11 SP3 virtual SAN configuration with hyper-V 2012 X64 not working.

Below is the hyper-v server details.
    HyperV server : windows 2012R2 X64 datacenter.
Steps performed for SUSE11 SP3 host.
Installed virtual machines for SUSE11SP3 server on hyper-v with ISO SLES11-SP3-X86-64.
Assigned virtual SAN ports as VSAN0 &VSAN1 for SAN storage.
Configured Host group in Hitachi VSP storage for suse server.
Created Ldev and mapped it to host group.
    On host, #cat /proc/scsi/scsi, #fdisk –l
Host does not show any devices from Hitachi OPEN-V even after multiple reboot and storage refresh as well.
I also tried same above steps on another exisiting hyper-v which is on windows 2012 X64. mapped Ldevs from Hitachi VSP storage are not visible.
Please let me know if anything additional needs to be installed as Integration services. I got to know from microsoft tech note that linux IC comes by default with SUSE and no need to install separately. I have been struggling to get resolution so far.

    Hi Sir,
    >>I got to know from microsoft tech note that linux IC comes by default with SUSE and no need to install separately.
    Yes, you are right .
I have also checked "virtual fibre channel" is supported in SUSE11 SP3 :
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn531027.aspx
I would suggest you to follow the following guide and pre-reuqirements of using virtual SAN:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/robertvi/archive/2014/07/11/getting-started-with-virtual-fibre-channel-inside-a-hyper-v-vm.aspx
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/privatecloud/archive/2013/07/23/hyper-v-virtual-fibre-channel-design-guide.aspx
You can try to create a windows VM and try to use virtual san for it , after configuring VSAN successfully then try to deploy SUSE .

  • Window manager that can scale individual window or virtual desktop?

Xfig doesn't work well on high DPI screens, especially for users whose vision is not that great. The problem is that there is no configuration option to scale elements such as lines.
I see two ways to solve the problem:
    Scale the Xfig window.
Scale the virtual desktop on which Xfig is running. Other applications would be running on virtual desktops that are not scaled.
Following a suggestion in the awesome mailing list, I looked into Wayland plus a compositing window manager. However, XWayland, the X compatibility layer, has issues with Xfig. So I guess that for now I’m stuck with X.org, and a window manager compatible with the X composite extension.

    Possible solutions:
Pervert: Set up a virtual machine just for Xfig, then use xrandr to scale the desktop inside of the virtual machine.
Saner: Run Xfig in a VNC server (or NX), then connect with a client that supports scaling, e.g. gtk-vnc.
Could be nice: Run Xfig within Xephyr, an X server that runs in a window within X. However, scaling with xrandr doesn't work.
Untested: Use the Compiz Ezoom plugin to scale part of the screen. One would somehow need to prevent windows from being positioned outside of the zoomed area, and also restrict mouse movement.

  • XWin window manager with virtual desktops

So I'm resuming my search for an X11 window manager that provides virtual desktops. I also would like just a little bit of keyboard customization, i.e., assign an F key to raise a window. Keystrokes to move between virtual desktops would be nice.
    Any suggestions?
Blackbox, from Darwinports, seems very nice in a lot of ways, but to get a visual interface to its virtual desktops you have to add bbpager. Darwinports does not have bbpager, and Blackbox needs a newer version of bbpager than the one on fink. Building bbpager from source myself appears to work, but an attempt to run it gives:
dyld: lazy symbol binding failed: lazy pointer not found
    dyld: lazy pointer not found
    Trace/BPT trap
At which point I'm in over my head.
A while back, AfterStep 1.8 did everything I wanted, but nobody maintains it for OS X anymore, as far as I can tell. AfterStep 2 is maintained, but the default style has changed not to my liking, and then and now customizing it is complex.

    Hi Don,
It's good to hear from you, as always! I believe that the lazy symbol binding failure is the result of the use of the wrong version gcc. I think that it happens when you use gcc-3.3 when gcc-4.0.1 is required, although I could have that backwards; it hasn't happened to me yet. I don't know why some apps would require a new version of gcc when most don't.
It appears that Jonathan's suggestions are for virtual desktops for Aqua and not X11. Of course given your taste for virtual desktops, that is likely to be something of interest to you.
As for virtual desktops for X11, they abound. My preference for a window manager that implements virtual desktops is Enlightenment. I like it for other reasons but it has a nice virtual desktop arrangement that "plays well" with Rootless mode. The desktops are arranged in a square. By default, the top two desktops have no background image, while the bottom two do. This allows one to use Enlightenment's elaborate contextual menu, which I like. There are numerous subtle features that make using desktops convenient and I think you'd like it.

  • Windows 8.1 RDP Issues with Windows Server 2008 Standard.

I have an issue maintaining an RDP connection from 64-bit windows 8.1 (standard and pro) to 32-bit Windows Server 2008 Standard.  Initial connection is normal, and as long as I am constantly typing on the link, for the most part it stays up. However
if I do not keep typing, or go to another desktop program for a few minutes, and then go back, the following happens:
If I am typing into notepad (or some screen that does not require windows to be refreshed) I can continue to do so, so the connection has not been lost, however if I try to do something that requires more extensive exchange of information (like file
    - open, or even trying to pull up the start menu), the connection pauses with about half the screen refreshed, sometimes after about 30 seconds a bit more of the screen fills out, but otherwise the connection is not responsive. Then after about 2 minutes,
RDP reconnects, at which point I am back to "normal".  I have conducted some tests and made inquiries of others attempting to connect to the server.
    1) I can connect to other Windows (servers 2008 R2 and 2012)  with no connection issues from this PC
    2) I can connect to the 32-bit server with no issues using Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows 7 from the same location as the WIndows 8.1 PC
    3) When I do a network speed test while having these issues I see full download and upload speeds, so I am not experiencing intermittent internet issues.
    4) No-one else from other locations (not of course using Windows 8.1) has any issues using RDP to the 32-bit Windows Server Standard.
These various tests seem to eliminate my network connection, and other operating systems, from the equation, and point to RDP issues on windows 8.1 connecting to the older OS.  I noticed in the September updates, a case 2989039 which seemed to point
to similar issues when using UDP through Remote Desktop Gateway.  That update is on my machine, and my connection has the setting Automatically detect RD Access Gateway server settings.
    Any thoughts anyone?

    Hi  RonaldRenaud,
If my understanding is right, this RDP issue only occur in the connection between Windows 8.1 and Server 2008.
Please check if you have installed the update kb2984006.
To resolve this issue caused by update 2989039, install update rollup 2984006. For more information, please refer to the following KB.
