RE: External speakers don't work while watching DVD on MacBook

Hello, I have a late 2006 white 13-inch MacBook. I have been trying to use an Altec Lansing external speaker while watching a DVD movie on my Mac, in order to increase and improve the sound, but when I plug the speaker cable into the headphones jack on my Mac, no sound comes out of the speaker. The speaker works fine when I plug it into the same jack to listen to music in my iTunes library, so I know the problem isn't with the speaker per se.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem? I have tried to play around with the Sound on System Preferences and with the Audio MIDI setup but I'm not sure which setting is at fault. Thanks very much.

Hi, thanks for your response. When I got into Preferences>Disk Setup, under Audio Output, "System Sound Output" is selected (there are no other options listed). Also, "Disable Dolby dynamic range compression" is checked.

  • EXTERNAL SPEAKERS DON'T WORK

External speakers don't work. They are LABTEC LCS 2420 speakers. The internal speakers with RealTek driver works fine. I have an HP Pavilion 23 touchsmart All-In-One PC with windows 8. I plugged the speakers in the headphone port then tried the audio jack in the back with the same resullt. When I right click on the sound icon and click on playback devices and riight click  in the open area i checked  show disabled and disconnected devices only the speakers realtek icon appears. Do I need to download other drivers and how should I do this?

Try the following: Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Manage Audio Devices > in the 'Playback' tab you should see the ports (rear and headphone) > R-Click the one that you are using for your external speakers and make it the default device.
    Trust this helps.

  • External speakers don't work with Yosemite

I have just upgraded my iMac to Yosemite and now my external speakers don't work.
They are there to be used under System Preferences -> Sound as "Bose USB Audio"
But when I select them I get no sound and "The selected device has no output controls"
I do get sound if I select the Built-in Internal Speakers
The Bose speakers worked fine under Mavericks.
Can anyone help me get them working again ?

Had similar issues with Bose Companion 5 after Yosemite installation. Tried most suggestions posted here without success.
But Birkers' post about plugging in/out analog headphones from Bose puck gave me an idea.
    1. Removed Bose USB cable from iMac (Late 2014 Retina 5K / Yosemite 10.10)
         - confirm that Bose disappears from Sound panel in System Preferences
    2. Played music through internal speakers - OK
    3. Played music through 2nd Display speaker - OK
    4. Re-connected Bose USB cable to a different USB port
         - confirm that Bose appears in Sound panel in System Preferences
    5. - Bingo! Sound now playing trough Bose system

  • External speakers don't work with Maverick

My external speakers will not work in Maverick....internal speakers ok. Tried rebooting, unplugging external speakers from back of computer, etc.......going to "sound" in System Preferences, only "internal speakers" is listed. Had external sound PRIOR to Maverick.....

Boy, do I feel like an idiot !!!  I had the speakers plugged into the input RIGHT NEXT TO the headphone port !! I could have sworn that's where I unplugged them when I did some "housekeeping" on my desk ! I even labeled that port "speakers"............I must say though that the"output" in "sound" in sys. pref. NOW SHOWS UP AS HEADPHONES !! So SORRY for taking up your time, but you got my external speakers working, and for that I am VERY grateful !!  I guess in all your experiences you've seen it all, but................THANKS AGAIN !!!!

  • Old G4 Mac external speakers don't work with Mac Pro - Please Help

Does anybody know if there's an adapter, so I can use the old clear plastic orb speakers that used to work with the old G4s with my new Mac Pro? Thanks.

    Hi-
The Apple Pro speakers only work with a special jack available on some G4 towers and iMacs.

  • External speakers won't work

The only time I can listen to music is through my Bluetooth. The external speakers don't work on my 4s. I have to start playing the song and in the lower right hand corner of iTunes it give me the option to switch between my Bluetooth or Dock Connector. When the Bluetooth isn't connected I get nothing. I've looked at every setting possible and even compared the settings to my husbands 4s. What should I do?

    Andrew Miller6...
Are you shure that you connected it to the "headphone port"?
That is the sound out port, as the other is an input port for a microphone.
Other than the obvious maybe it has some incompatable tip on the jack. Test it with a known good set of headphones.

  • External UCube speakers don't work after awakening from sleep mode since 10.7.5 upgrade

Ever since I upgraded to 10.7.5 when I wake my computer from sleep mode...my external UCube speakers don't work unless I unplug them and plug them back in. I've already tried resetting the SMC. It recognizes and shows the speakers in the sound preferences...but no sound unless I reconnect the usb cable. Worked fine in 10.7.4
Any ideas? Its ridiculous all the audio problems being reported.

I have a mac mini (A1283) with OS 10.7.4. Upon upgrading to 10.7.5 it did not start up again. Instead, the light was on and the hard drive did not start up. The light on the connected USB mouse was not lit.
    My solution:
    Cold start with Command-v pressed.
This should start Verbose mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492 ).
What happened on my mac mini was that the grey startup screen with the Apple logo appeared for a long while before the login screen came.
Maybe Cmd-v set open firmware params and fixed some corruption.
Anyway: my mac mini works again.

  • Upgraded to yosemite now my speakers don't work and i can't play videos on Facebook.

When i play a video on face book I'm told i need to upgrade flashplayer, i wasn't even aware i had it downloaded! I have got rid of flash player (i think ) and now I'm told i need to download FP before i can watch videos. I can't play games on FB either and my speakers don't work.
I wish i hadn't upgraded to Yosemite to be honest as i prefer the old layout and it seems to have caused me problems. Everything was working fine before the Upgrade to Yosemite.
Im not good with computer terminology so please reply as simply as possible :-)

  • Internal speakers don't work

My husband uses the dual USB late 2001 iBook more than I do, mainly with Toast and a Griffin iMic to copy our old vinyl records to CDs, and to run VirtualPC for his PC model railroad design app. He does all this in OS 9.2.2.
I used the iBook yesterday, and discovered that the internal speakers aren't working at all. (He hadn't noticed!) No startup chime, no alert beeps, nothing. The sound settings are not set to "mute". I rebooted in OS X (version 10.1, the original, which we've never upgraded), and it didn't make any difference. Still no sound.
If we plug in a set of headphones or external speakers, they will work, playing the startup chime and all other sounds.
It's never been taken apart, so it's unlikely that the speaker cables have been accidentally disconnected.
So far, I've tried the following, none of which helped: trashing the Sound prefs in OS 9 and restarting; resetting the PRAM; starting in OS X and then restarting in Open Firmware, resetting the NVRAM and then resetting the PRAM again. I also tried the hint in This Post - restarting with the headphones connected and then disconnecting them. And I tried plugging the iMic into a USB port, and the headphones into the iMic, and restarting and then disconnecting. No use! The iBook Audio Update was already installed, so that's not it.
We've compared the iBook's OS 9.2.2 Sound control panel with the one on a 7300 also running 9.2.2, and notice one interesting thing. When the iBook is freshly rebooted, the Sound > Speakers tab has the headphone icon present and highlighted, even when the headphones aren't connected. One can plug in the external speakers, and select the speakers icon, and they'll work. But it always defaults back to a highlighted headphone icon upon restart - even when the speakers are plugged in. The 7300's Speakers tab does not show any headphone icon at all, unless the headphones are actually connected. But this is only in OS 9. I don't see a comparable setting in the OS X System Prefs, where I can check on the speaker settings.
It's as if the iBook's sound port thinks the headphones are connected, even when they're not. Could this be a hardware problem with the port, or some kind of logic board problem?
My next step will probably be a reinstall of both OS's.
    Dorothy

    Ronda and Dave2,
    Thanks for responding.
I'm beginning to think it has to be a hardware problem. It happens in both OS's, and when booting from the OS 9 install CD that came with the iBook - no startup chime at all. But the chime is there when either headphones or external speakers are hooked up.
I did restart with Command-Option-O-F, got into Open Firmware, and followed the instructions for resetting the NVRAM.
The OS X Sound preference pane has only two tabs: Alert and Output. Output shows only "Built-in audio controller", no matter what's plugged into the output port. (In OS 9, the Sound control panel has 4 tabs: Alert, Input, Output and Speakers.) So, in X there's no way to know what speakers the iBook thinks it's using.
I haven't tried resetting the PMU; it didn't seem from the KB article on PMU reset that doing that would help this problem. (I'm cautious about fiddling with the PMU.) But, the battery is old, doesn't hold a charge very long, and we need to get a new one. We normally use the power adapter, anyway. So maybe a PMU reset would do something.
I did ask my husband - an experimental physicist - if the speakers could have been damaged by too loud a sound when he was working with Toast, and he said the the sound circuitry should prevent that, unless there were a design flaw.
On further thought, I probably won't bother reinstalling the systems - just wait until I get back to civilization next week and take it to an Apple Store. (The only authorized service center within 100 miles of this house is one CompUSA 50 miles away.)

  • Built-In Audio Output Speakers Don't Work

My Built-In speakers don't work on my Macbook Pro anymore.
I plugged headphones into the headphone jack last night when watching a film, now all of a sudden when I remove the headphones my built in speakers dont work.
When I try to turn up the volume I get the circle with a line through it telling me it can't be changed.
I went to system preferences and it says my speakers can't be configured and my Master volume track is un-highlighted so It can't be changed.

Is there a red light glowing inside the jack? It sounds like a faulty jack. Read this:

  • My iPhone 4 speakers don't work with music it only works when I get calls

When I try to play music or videos my iPhone speakers don't work but when I get a phone call it works and I've tried everything to get them to work but no result yet. The first time it happened it was because there was lint in my speakers but I cleaned them out and now that its happened again I can't figure out what's wrong.

    OK, let's try a reset.
A reset may help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off buttons for approximately 10-15 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons.
No content is affected by this procedure.

  • External Speakers Randomly Stop Working until I "Test" or Disable/Enable

    I'm using a HP Pavillion DV6 Notebook PC Running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1.
External speakers randomly stop working until I "test" or disable/enable them. Headphone/HDMI Audio Works.
    Background
-Recently had to do a clean install of windows.
-Went to the HP Drivers Website and downloaded all of the latest drivers.
-I installed several other programs as well (Flash, Steam, Media Player, Browser)
    -The problem started
    Current Settings
-My deafult device is "Speakers and Headphones: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC"
    -Enhancements are disabled
-Bass and Treble are set to 4
-Format is set to 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality)
-Allowing applications to take exclusive control of the device or not doesn't make a difference (but it's currently off)
    Troubleshooting
-The audio works by plugging in headphones or using an HDMI device
-The audio comes back if I go to my sound settings and hit "Test", or if I disable and re-enable the device
    Error Messages
-Youtube starts the video for 3 seconds, restarts and sputters a bit, and then says that there was an error
-My media player (MusicBee) gives me this message: "Unable to start playback (Error = BASS_ERROR_BUFLOST)"
That's everything I can think of. Any ideas?

I see that you are having a frustrating time with the sound to your external speakers. Have you tried connecting the speakers to another computer to see if is a hardware issue with the speakers? Do the regular speakers work? What is your product number as there are several models in the dv6 series?

  • External speakers suddenly stop working

My 13" aluminum MacBook's internal speakers are working fine.  External speakers and headphones were also working fine until yesterday.  Now, external speakers do not work with my MacBook at all, and with headphones I get a very muddled, echoy sound.  This happened overnight - my laptop was just sitting, not plugged in, on my desk.  I've tried restarting and resetting the NVRAM - no help.
I have a 13" Aluminum Unibody MacBook running OSX 10.7.5.
    Please help!

    >I had a quick look this morning and sure enough, a YouTube clip was playing, but no sound.
This happened to me too using an Tecra A11 unit.
The Youtube clip had no sound but if I plugged and re-plugged the headphone jack, the sound appeared again.
I thought this was a problem with headphone jack but I wanted to check if this issue could be solved by driver reinstallation.
Firstly I uninstalled the Realtek sound driver from the system. Then I entered the device manager and deleted the High definition Audio Controller from the System Devices area.
In Audio , video and games controller I deleted the Intel display audio entry.
    Finally I rebooted the system.
After new reboot the Windows recognized the deleted devices. I checked the playback tab in control panel -> sound and found new device Headphones which was not visible before.
Then I started Youtube and checked the sound. It was available. Then I installed the newest version of Realtek HD audio driver and rebooted the unit.
    The sound was still there
So hopefully it was just and driver issue
