Re: Satellite L40-18X PSL48E: brightness goes back to max after every reboot

Hello,
i have Satellite L40-18X, short model: PSL48E
bought it with Vista, the bios is version 1.70.
There is very annoying problem with the brightness regulator of the display:
Every time i restart the Vista OS the brightness is set to Maximum and i have to switch it back to smaller brightness.
By hibernating the OS there is no problem - brightness is just fine as i leaved it - the same percent.
The Fn keys + F6 and F7 are working fine, in OS and in BIOS - everywhere, but after i start the OS the brightness is on the highest level
Absolutely the SAME problem is in windows XP (with the same bios 1.70) - Fn keys are working fine, but when os starts - brightness is always on Max level, by hibernating is OK.
Can you give me suggestion?
Now i don't want to reflash the bios, because on the website there is older version 1,60 for Vista and i cannot have the mine version.
Appreciate any help :)

You are right, the power profiles in vista have brightness regulator, and from there
the problem is fixed :) Thanks.
Now stays the Windows XP sp2 with the same brightness problem. All drivers are working
- wlan, sound, everything - I've downloaded the xp drivers from the site.
I installed these:
1)ATK Hotkey Driver\2ksetup.exe
2)ATK Hotkey Utility Driver\Setup.exe
-hotkeys are working, but same problem by reboot of OS - brightness @ Max level
I checked what apps start automatically - D:\Program files\ ATK Hotkey\Hcontrol.exe
starts - it is responsible for the hotkey menu. I tried with and without this app -
but no fix. Any other suggestions? (In power profiles of Win XP there are no settings
for brightness :( ) Will the problem be fixed if i install the XP bios, because as I said I doesn't want to install another version, because i will loose my "new" 1.70 bios
(not available for download)?

It only does this on Reading Rainbow DVDs so far: Using DVD Player, the show goes back to menu after every chapter, even though I selected "Play Entire Episode".  It does this whether the laptop is plugged in or is using battery power.  How do I get it to play all??  Thanks.

Turns out it was NOT the software or the Mac. I bought a portable DVD player and this problem happens with it, too.

I'm going back to cs4 after using cs6 and I can't open nef files in camera raw.

Each camera needs a specific camera raw version (ACR).  And each ACR is tied to a specific version of PS.  See this list http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

After I set a repeating alarm clock to off, it goes back to on after a few seconds. What is happening and how do I fix it? I have an iPod touch, 4th generation, iOS 5, no jailbreak whatsoever.

    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

  • Laptop goes back to sleep after closing and opening lid

When I close the lid to put the computer to sleep and then reopen the lid, the computer comes back on briefly and then goes back to sleep.  It will come back on if I unplug the SafMag.  I've reset the SMC following the on-line instructions; I currently have SMC firmware 1.41f2.

    Any advice?
Sounds like you need to take it in to an Apple Store.

  • Satellite L40 - 1.90 bios update does nothing on Vista exept reboot

    Hi,
We have a L40 laptop and very happy with it. It has bios 1.60 and I want to update it to 1.90. Vista-32 home basic was by default installed. It now has SP1.
When I unzip the package and run the bat file (which start winflash with the binary), the "dos" window opens and stays there for a while. Nothing happens and afterwards the window closes and the system is rebooted.
When I just run winflash, nothing happens. There is no dialog or any other messages.
How does one update the bios on the L40-14Y (PSL48E)?
    Thx!
    DickS

Could be, the account is in admin rights so should work.
But the winflash just closes on start. I tried running it in XP-SP2 compatability mode, same behaviour.
Maybe there is an issue with German Vista-32-SP1? No idea, but strange as the bios file is from 28.3 when there was RC of SP1 so I'd think it would be tested by Toshiba.
Should I trace with debugview and send it to Toshiba somewhere?

  • Lion goes back to sleep after 40 seconds.

If I wake up Lion with a keystroke - and then do nothing - Lion goes to sleep again after about 40 seconds. I have settings at 10 minutes.
Ok - I can live with that. BUT - if Lion wakes up with timer (alarm) - you can do automatic wake up settings in SystemSettings - it also goes to sleep again after 40 seconds. This means that my sceduled backup 4 in the morning never executes - 'cause my backup program (Personal Backup) is just about to start when Lion goes to sleep again.
So - the possibility to set automatic wake-ups in SystemSettings is not useful - if no one is at the computer and start to write or move the mouse Lion will go to sleep in 40 seconds again. Do anyone else here experienced the same? I would like to figure out if it is MY LIon or if it is a general bug in Lion. Thanks.

This happens rarely but consistently! I't seems to happen about 5% of the time waking from sleep. It MAY be more prone to happen if I had been moving with it in my bag, but it can happen at any waking time after any duration of sleep.

  • Synaptics Touchpad Tap Scroll settings changed back to defaults on every reboot. Windows 10

After the Windows 10 upgrade my Synaptics Touchpad setings seem to be reset to factory defaults on every reboot.  I go in and change to deselect Tap and Scroll gesture options, save, and everything works as expected.  If I reboot my pc... all of my changes are erased. I go to Start >Settings > Mouse and Touchpad > Additional Mouse Options > Device Settings > Settings Right after boot:  MultiFinger Gestures (selected)  Scrolling (deselected)  Tapping (selected)  Buttons (selected) After change manually and saved:
MultiFinger Gestures (deselected)  Scrolling (deselected)  Tapping (deselected)  Buttons (selected) Rebooted again... and back to initial defaults (Arg!!!)  Can anyone suggest a fix?

Hello! I just wanted to share a solution to this issue. I've been having this issue ever since I started the Windows 10 insider program so it's sad that Microsoft didn't fix it before release. Anyway let's get started! The first thing you will want to do is uninstall the Synaptics Driver. Right click on the start button and click programs and features. Find the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver and uninstall it. You will eventually need to restart your PC but do not do that yet otherwise it will just reinstall itself. Next your going to want to Hide the update from Windows Update. To do this on Windows 10 you need to download a tool which can be found here. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930 Run the tool it will begin detecting problems and searching for updates. You will get two options, Hide Updates or Show hidden updates. Click on Hide updates and on the list you will see the Synaptics Driver, place a checkmark on it and then click next. Let the wizard finish and you've successfully hidden the Synaptics pointing device driver. Next open settings and click on Update & security, click recovery on your left, and then click restart now under advanced startup. Next click on troubleshoot. Then at the choose an option screen, click advanced options, click on startup settings, and click restart. Once your computer restarts you'll see startup settings. Press the number 7 to disable driver signature enforcement. Your computer will now boot up. Login and open your web browser and go to this link http://www.synaptics.com/en/drivers.php Download the latest synaptic's driver for Windows 8 and install it. Once installed, you maybe prompted to reboot so go ahead and reboot the computer. After that, go into your mouse settings and configure your touchpad to your liking. You will not have to worry about losing your settings after restarting the pc anymore. I suggest keeping the tool that allows you to hide or show hidden updates as it is quite handy.
    Summary:
    1.) Uninstall the Synaptics Driver
2.) Hide the Driver Update for Synaptics using this tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930
3.) Go to Settings, Update & security, recovery, advanced start [restart now]
4.) Click troubleshoot, advanced options, startup settings [restart now]
5.) Press the number 7 to disable driver signature enforcement
6.) Download the latest synaptic's driver for Windows 8 from the website. http://www.synaptics.com/en/drivers.php
7.) Reboot the computer if necessary.
8.) Configure your mouse settings to your liking.

  • Going back to mirrored after booting unmirrored - Solaris 10 x86

    Folks,
On one of my Solaris 10 x86 servers at the last reboot it failed to come up. I put back the versions of /etc/vfstab and /etc/system from before the boot drive was mirrored. "metastat" still reports the md versions of the slices are still in sync but I'm not convinced that's accurate since the failed reboot.
How do I go back to mirrored again at the next boot?
I've been reading doc 819-2789 "x86: How to Create a RAID-1 Volume From the root ..." and it looks like I need to go through most of the steps.
My best guess goes something like this -
Loop for each mounted slice - Use metadetach to remove the one not mounted. Use metaattach to add it back. Use metasync to confirm the mirror synced up again.
Once that loop has completed assume that any MBR stuff is broken. A bit like I've done with "mkboot" on SPARC but following the steps in the doc. Look at menu.lst, fdisk, installgrub, metaroot, have with and without mirror copies of /etc/vfstab and /etc/system ready just in case, reboot.
Basically all of the steps from the doc only instead of using metainit use metadetach, metaattach, metasync.
Does this make sense? It parallels stuff I've done on SPARC but I have a lot more experience on SPARC than on X86.
    Thanks in advance, Doug Freyburger

"metastat" still reports the md versions of the slices are still in sync but I'm not convinced that's accurate since the failed reboot. You're absolutely correct. As soon as you write (or mount read/write) to one of the raw slices or to one of the sides of the mirror, the mirror will be out of sync, and SVM will not realize it.
How do I go back to mirrored again at the next boot?Detach the side you're not booted from. Redo the metaroot and come up on the (now one-way) mirror. Once booted from the mirror, reattach the other side.
My best guess goes something like this -
Loop for each mounted slice - Use metadetach to remove the one not mounted. Use metaattach to add it back. Use metasync to confirm the mirror synced up again. You'll want to detach before using the mirror again, but you can't attach until you stop using the raw slice. So you can't just detach/attach in one step. You'll need to reboot between them.
Not sure why any MBR stuff would have been affected unless you did so explicitly.
Basically all of the steps from the doc only instead of using metainit use metadetach, metaattach, metasync.
Does this make sense? It parallels stuff I've done on SPARC but I have a lot more experience on SPARC than on X86.Should be the same on both. If you're adding a new disk, you need to make sure boot support is added. But in this case I doubt any of the boot support was damaged (depending on the details of what led up to your changes).

  • After waking rMBP from sleep and typing password, rMBP goes back to sleep after a few seconds and won't wake for about 7-8 seconds.

Absolutely embarrassing. What is going on here? When will we see a fix?

  • My MacBook Pro keeps going back to the desktop every 10-15 minutes, no matter what program I am using at the time. I tried restarting but it still occurs.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I don't know what else to do and it's very annoying and disruptive. It occurs every time I go full screen in any application.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    defaults delete com.apple.dock single-app && killall Dock
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. You can then quit Terminal. Test.
