Read Only Harddrive problem

I have a WD Elements Drive and just bought my first mac product! Mac Book Pro Retina. I transfered files from my friends mac onto the drive and now I want to work on it on my laptop but it says I can not write any files onto the disk. I tried to change the permissions to the drive and there are no options on the GET INFO screen to let me write to the drive. It says READ ONLY.
I have searched Apples support and all the options they suggest I CAN NOT DO! There is NO LOCK ICON and the disk utility options are greyed out. Please help so I can start work again.
Love being a new mac owner!
Charles

Do you have any WD software installed?   WD drives are currently having issues on Mavericks
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475136?start=255&tstart=0
Also verify same on the WD boards
http://community.wd.com/t5/External-Drives-for-Mac/bd-p/passport_mac
What format is the drive in?
Verify the HD on another Mac if you can.
Congrats on the new Mac, great choice.      The WD not so much.   If you have an option to return the WD, you might consider same.
Did you install any WD software when you hooked the HD up? or downloaded same?

  • Read only filesystem problem

    Hi,
I have a strange problem. After some time of running archlinux the root filesystem suddenly becomes read-only. It happened 3 times yet. I'm using LVM and the root volume is /dev/mapper/VG0-archlinux2 and filesystem type is reiserfs.
If i tried to remount it read-write using command
    mount -o remount,rw /
    i got this:
sudo: unable to open /var/db/sudo/uiii/3: Read-only file system
    mount: /dev/mapper/VG0-archlinux2: can't read superblock
    Only reboot helps.

  • Correcting 'Read only' file problem ...

I while ago I had an HD problem. I installed a new HD, upgraded to Leopard and then brought all my old files in from an external backup.
My problem is that they're all now 'Read only'. Is there a way I can solve this problem at a stroke, without having to convert individual files to 'read & write'. Doing that is starting to drive me mad ...
    Thanks!

    Hey there,
One solution is to repair disk permissions, which can be done through Disk Utility. The article below provides step-by-step instructions for using this feature to repair permissions. It is a better idea to use Disk Utility from your Mac Installation disc for this procedure. More on using disk utility can be found in the Apple document below. Hope this helps.

  • Read only / save problem when multiple user accessing PDF

When accessing a PDF-file from a network location (where multiple users might have the file open simultaneously) I have noticed a problem.
First of all you will not get notified when opening the file that it is open elsewhere, there is no "read only" mode in this case.
Secondly (and worse) is the fact that the person having opened the file first is prompted to save it under a new name when she/he is saving changes since "file is open elsewhere".
This works quite the opposite of what most Windows applications do.
Is it a problem in version 7 and 8 of Acrobat only?
I have heard from the support previously that it might be unsupported functionality to use network drives for editing. Is that true?
If you are doing updates after a review but want to share the outcomes of the review this quite annoying...

I agree, and I have seen the same points as well, but...
During the update process after the review many reviewers are looking at their comments and how they were handled during the review meeting and at the same time the authors (yes, for documents such as a requirement specification there will be more than one author) are doing the updates to the original document.
We are also updating the PDF with the changes made by adding new replies to the comments and also changing the status of the comments once more.
The logical approach when opening a file is not to display a text box, but to add the information in the title bar of the program. That way you do not add an extra step to the people who only want "read only" access.

  • Read-only disk problems

    Hi,
Yesterday I was stupid enough to perform Repair Permissions from a Tiger system onto Leopard. Results:
-All new folders are read only for me, but read-write for "system". I have to assign myself as read-write every time.
-All non-system fonts are not activated. If I try to activate them with Linotype Font Explorer X, it only remains so as long as I don't quit the app.
-I cannot edit Song info for new imports in iTunes.
    -Photoshop CS3 won't start.
-The default apps to open media files are reset.
Etcetera, etcetera. I don't think I have seen all problems yet. I Repaired Permissions several times in Leopard. I also went in single user mode and did
    /sbin/mount -uw
    chown root:admin /
    chmod 1775 /
    But it didn't work.
    Help would be greatly appreciated.

We found out how to reboot/halt a mini without any filesystem access: Use this
    sudo reboot -nq
    or
    sudo halt -nq
    Reference from man reboot
    NAME
halt, reboot -- stopping and restarting the system
    SYNOPSIS
         halt [-lnqu]
         reboot [-lnq]
    DESCRIPTION
The halt and reboot utilities flush the file system cache to disk, send all running processes a SIGTERM (and subsequently a SIGKILL) and, respectively, halt or restart
the system.  The action is logged, including entering a shutdown record into the wtmp(5) file.
When the system is halted with the halt command, the system is powered off.
         The options are as follows:
-l      The halt or reboot is not recorded in the system log.  This option is intended for applications such as shutdown(8), that call reboot or halt and log this them-
                 selves.
-n      The file system cache is not flushed.  This option should probably not be used.
-q      The system is halted or restarted quickly and ungracefully, and only the flushing of the file system cache is performed (if the -n option is not specified).  This
option should probably not be used.
-u      The system is halted up until the point of removing system power, but waits before removing power for 5 minutes so that an external UPS (uninterruptible power
supply) can forcibly remove power.  This simulates a dirty shutdown to permit a later automatic power on. OS X uses this mode automatically with supported UPSs in
                 emergency shutdowns.
Normally, the shutdown(8) utility is used when the system needs to be halted or restarted, giving users advance warning of their impending doom and cleanly terminating
         specific programs.

  • Discoverer BI for OLAP "read-only" privilege problem

    Hello!
I set the user privilege to "read-only" but still it allows me to save and edit the report within the user. I'm expecting to read only the report and not to modify it.
Please let me do know if you have a solution for this.
    Grace

I think Shared is only for viewing. Try giving full control on main folder( folder which has old reports) in users to the new user.
    thanks

  • My Finder is opening folders in Read-Only Mode.

When I click on Finder. A folder is opening in read only mode. When I open any folders in it, then a new window is opened again in read only mode.
Just the "New Finder Window" is having this problem.
Please help me out with my problem. I want the Finder to open windows normally rather than in read only modes.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • Problem with HTML in a read only textarea item

I'm working on a messaging system for our site. For the body of the message, we use a standard textarea item. However, if we come to the messaging page from a certain page in our system, then we pre-load the textarea item, and make it read only. The only problem with this is that there are HTML tags in the body that we try to pre-load. This is causing problems because they aren't being interpreted as tags, but are being displayed as text. If I make the textarea editable, then everything looks fine, it's just when I set the area to be read only that it doesn't work. Any thoughts on how to fix this? Thanks!

Not always. A user is allowed to edit that area in most circumstances except for when the user arrives at the page coming from 1 page in particular. In this case, then the field is read-only. At all other times though, it is editable.
As a workaround, whenever I know I'm coming from this page, I set a variable, and if the variable is set, then I use a Display Only item and then hide the Textarea. If the variable is not set, then I hide my Display Only item and show the Textarea. Not very elegant, but it works.

  • Problem with fillable form showing up as read-only

I created a fillable form in Acrobat 8 Professional. It opens fine for me directly from where I saved the file or when I click on it from a link which I posted on our Web site. However, no one in the office gets the same results - it opens as read-only for them when I send it as an email attachment or when they click on the same link from our Web site.  We are using the same version of Acrobat Reader (10.1.3). What can I do?
    Thank you.

The problem is the file is a PDF/A document, and the other users have the user preference set to display PDF/A documents in PDF/A mode, so any changes are not allowed. The users can turn this off (Edit > Preferences > Documents > PDF/A View Mode, or you can remove the PDF/A information from the document. The latter is the better appoach. Here's a link to an action that you can install that will do this for you: http://acrobatusers.com/actions-exchange/remove-pdf-a-information
and here's one with more information: http://blogs.adobe.com/acrolaw/2011/05/how-to-remove-pdfa-information-from-a-file/

  • Read only inputText binding problem

    Hi all
    I have a h:inputText like below
<h:inputText readonly="true" id="txtStudentId" value="#{student.id}"/>then using a Java script I change the value of this textbox.
But when retrieve the value from backbean It's not changed. The problem is associated with read only attribute.
When it's not read only it works.
    Can some one explain this?

Thank You BALUSC, Your solution worked!
    Nice idea

  • Read-only problem

I'm completely new to jdeveloper (v 9.0.3.5) with the OA extension components. I'm having problems when I have copied the various xml & java class files from the server to my local PC, replicating the structure on the server. When I then add these into my project the BC come in as read-only, so do all the files within the BC. If I create a new BC, this is fine and fully editable. I am obviously missing a trick here. Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Thanks Jeanette

    Hi,
    1. Select the project folder in the exporer and set the "Read-Only" proprty to false.
    2. ReImport the  Project once again.

  • Read-Only Problem during Boot

    Hi,
I tried to update my system today, like every week, with the standard command pacman -Syu. After installing all updates, my window manager (gnome3) crashed and i tried to restart my System. After the grub window appeared and I choosed my kernel the normal startup commands are shown until the Arch prompt appeared. The one where Arch Linux tried to start all relevant processes. After that there are only mistakes. All startup processes are busy or failing. The only message i get is, that the filesystem, i think thats the root partition (ext4), is read-only or another error: some files for startup cannot be created because they already exist.
Getting to console is also impossible, because the system tries to start virtualbox additions, with an funny message, that it is busy and tries it again in 5 min (infinity loop). But shidt happens. I have read in another post that I can try another Linux System, mount my root partition and  do an
    fsck /dev/sda3 -p or -f
. But it says that all is clean (sda3 is root and sda1 is /boot). The filesystem is ext4, so i tried also fsck.ext4, but it also say all is clean.
After another boot i stoped at the position, where the fist error occur.
    Mounting Local Filesystems
    /etc/rc.sysinit: line 285: /etc/mtab: Read-only file System
    next one:
    Activating Swap
    /bin/rm: cannot remove '/etc/localtime': Read-only file system
    removing leftover Files
    /usr/bin/find: cannot delete 'var/run/cups.pid': Read-only file system
After that message there are also al lot of analog errors.
I have no other idea than an dirty filesystem. Is there another possibility to rescue my system without an fresh install. Im sorry but i cannot log any messages at that state of boot. So it is not easy to get better informations about special error codes.
I have forget to give you some informations about my stats:
    - actual stable arch kernel 2.6.38
    - gnome 3
    - thinkpad t400

With udev 168-1 I obtain this message during boot:
    :: checking filesystems
fsck.ext4: no such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda6 (my root device)
    Possibly non-existent device?
    ***************** FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED ****************
    * Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root *
    * file system is currently mounted read-only. To remount *
    * it read-write type: mount -n -o remount,rw / *
    * When you exit the maintenance shell the system will *
    * reboot automatically. *
but fsck run manually says it's all clean.
I have to remount rw / partition and manually mount all the other partition, then I can switch to runlevel 3.
With udev 167-2 (and prior) I can boot without any problems.
I'm not sure it's a problem from udev, but downgrading it works for me.

  • Read only problem on forms

I'm having a problem when I set fields to read only in ApEx. The situation is there are several surveys to have user's fill out and they don't need to answer every question, and once the surveys are submitted, they are no longer able to be modified. I had no problems setting the fields to read only in that case, but the problem I'm encountering is that any question that had a null value left in it instead of being answered, the field is displaying as: []. I'd like to be able to change that so that it reads as not answered or something to make it more readable.
Is there a way to use a case when expression to clear this up? Thank you.

    Thanks for the quick response.
I tried giving a case when using the null on one of the questions then set the form into Read Only mode, and it still displayed as []. I forgot to mention this part last time, and I'm sorry about that, but these items are Select Lists with a NUMBER column in the database, so I can't actually store words in the table for the null vales.

  • [SOLVED] More rsync problems after restore... Read only filesystem?

Yesterday I backed up all of my data with rsync to a USB thumb drive. Surprisingly it all fit, but my intentions were to wipe my disk and create a new partition scheme for a dualboot while still being able to continue where I left off with arch. So after backing up with the script from the arch wiki titled full system restore with rsync, I followed the rest of that page, and modified the fstab on the backup on the USB and reconfigured grub and restarted my computer and I was able to boot into the USB. Then, I decided that it would be easier to just use the live cd to repartition and pacstrap the base system and generated an fstab. Next, I chrooted from the livecd environment into the newly built base and installed rsync. I then mounted my USB to /mnt in the chrooted environment and used
    rsync -aAXv /mnt/ARCH_BACKUP/* / --exclude={/mnt/ARCH_BACKUP/etc/fstab,/mnt/ARCH_BACKUP/boot/grub/}
I just did this since I figured that all of the directories excluded in the script wouldn't really have to be excluded here since they were already empty. Everything seemed to run smoothly except for one file(or maybe directory?) called /etc/resolv.conf.t.jbnW2 which kept giving an error. I figured the file was unique to the USB or something and continued to reinstall grub and then reboot. The weird thing is that everything was back on my system, but it didn't automatically boot into a display manager which it's set up to do. Then when trying to manually start x, that wouldn't work. Then I tried to connect to wifi, it recognized my network but wouldn't connect, so I tried sudo su, which worked but returned an error that the var file system was read only. I then tried to use rsync again thinking maybe that directory would transfer now that I wasn't in the chrooted environment. But instead, it was trying to restore every single file, but every one returned the error "filesystem is read only".
It seems like when I restored all of the files in my entire system were made read only.
Can anyone tell me what may have caused this and how to fix it?
I think it may either be that when I mounted the device in the chrooted environment I didn't specify 'rw' capabilities, or it may be that when I backed up I didn't specify 'rw' capabilities I just opened the file manager and clicked on it and it automagically mounted to /media/.

Ok, well I fiixed it. I had edited the fstab on the usb to be able to boot into the usb, and, while I edited it again on the hdd each time I restored from the backup, I didn't realize that the top entry /dev/sda1 (which is my root partition) was on a line that was commented out.  I guess I accidentally hit the backspace button or something while editing it to be able to boot into the usb.
Also, I think there was a second problem, that my usb controller is starting to fail. Because on the last time that I backed up, if I moved my computer or anything I would get a I/O error. This was caused by the failing usb controller. The computer would remount it as read-only because of the failure. The solution to this was to use
    hdparm -r0 /dev/sdxy
Note: The device must be unmounted.
Where x is the device and y is the partition number, for me this was sdb1.
    Then mount specifying read-write option.
    mount -o rw /dev/sdxy /media/<BACKUP>
    I also tried
    mount -o remount,rw /dev/sdxy /media/<BACKUP>
as was recommended on all of the sites that I could find, but this command kept returning an error.
Note: For newer users, Arch does not automatically create the media folder as it doesn't provide automatic mounting of external drives. If such is the case, and you haven't installed a desktop environment with a file manager that will automatically do this for you when the device is recognized, you must make the media directory and the directory which you intend to mount to manually.
    # mkdir /media
    # mkdir /media/<BACKUP>
Where <BACKUP> can be whatever you want it to be.

  • When I converted a file from PDF to WORD.DOC it opened as Read Only and I'm unable to alter any of the text.  How can I solve this problem?

When I tried to convert a file from PDF to WORD.DOC it opened as Read Only and I'm unable to alter any of the text.  How do I solve this problem?  I don't know how to change it from Read Only.

    Dear Sara
Thank you very much for sending the converted file.  Yes, I am able to edit it - that will be very useful to me and I appreciate your help.
Referring to your previous message when you said you'd converted via Acrobat and not Acrobat.com, I'm converting via Acrobat.com because that's the only option that is shown (how do I convert via Acrobat? - perhaps that would be more successful).  I'm using the Export PDF website, and the OCR is enabled to "Recognize text in English UK".  However, I've just tried converting a different LPA pdf form, this time for Health & Welfare https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/245571/LPA114_He alth_welfare_LPA.pdf and again I have the same problem as before.  I've altered it from "Read only" and thought I'd then be able to enter text, but "Drawing Tools" is shown in the pane and I'm unable to enter anything onto the form - everything appears to be in images.  Also, the lettering on the heading of' page 1 has become jumbled, with the word "Public" overlaying the word "Guardian."  Any suggestions as to what it is I'm doing wrong would be welcome - I don't like to be beaten!
    Regards,
    Judith.
