Read-Only iTunes library - possible?

iTunes developers please note.
I would like to share my iTunes library from a NAS to my household, but with a catch. The NAS export is setup as read/write for me because I am the one who controls the music library and my kids attach in read/only mode.
The reason for this is that I have way spent too much time fixing broken links, missing track, wrongly downloaded cover art, etc - the result of 7 and 9 year olds not reading the text before clicking 'yes' or 'continue'
I have seen other posts asking similar questions (using network drives, extreme length of time to import, etc) but not quite this specific.
I guess I can live without a common podcast library on a NAS being a function but any help to solve this fat-finger problem greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar named Music, rename the iTunes folder inside, launch iTunes, and drag the iTunes folder into iTunes. This won't preserve playlists or other metadata.

I know this doesn't help you Bud, but I've had this issue for at least the last couple of versions. If I can ask, what is you enviornment like? Local PC only, libray saved on another PC/Server?
In my case my library is on Windows 2003 server with the share mapped to drive M: This has worked for many years through both XP and Windows 7 until and update a while ago.

I'm getting a message that reads 'The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation." Why is this? And how can I fix it? I'm worried that I'm going to lose my entire library because of this.

A belated reply, as the problems itunes has have discouraged me from using it much. If you uncheck the "read only" box, it doesn't stay that way! Next time you use it, the box comes up checked.
I'm still having that problem, even when I open iTunes as administrator.
I've yet to see the answer to this problem. I use itunes mostly to download audiobooks, and I'm ready to download more, and want to save them!

• None of my iDevices can read my iTunes library after an hour of availibility. When I first start iTunes I can read the library, but after about 30 minutes my iPad's and iPhones can no longer access the library. I see it in the shared list, but no access.

None of my iDevices can read my iTunes library after about 30 minutes. My iDevices lose connection to my library and I have to do one of the three following things in iTunes to regain connectivity: 1. Restart iTunes 2: Stop / Start Home Services 3: Start playing a song.
I'ts as if iTunes goes into a background or sleep mode. During the loss of connectivity my iDevices show that there's a library shared, but I cannot connect to it.

Smae issue here, but I'm unable to get Home Sharing started again (after MAc and iOS restarts, Home Sharing on/off. etc.) This happend a few weeks ago and turngin Home Sharing Off/On fixed the connection issue b/w iPad2 5.1 and iTunes 10.6.1 running on a OSX10.6.8.
I updated to iOS 5.1.1 on iPad2 today, watched a movie and then about 20 minutes into a 2nd movie I lost connection (Sharing tab in Video app disappeared and has not come back.) The update seems like the culprit, but odd it worked for over 2 hours before stopping, odd I can't get Sharing to work anymore (iTunes see's my iOS devices b/c I can conenct to iTunes to enter my passcod efor connecting the Remote app.) Appears to be an issue with iTunes broadcasting Home Sharing, even thougt it says it is on.

• 2 PCs - 1 Itunes library possible?

I have two pc's at home both running itunes. I also have an iphone. I want to set up so both PC's are running the same itunes library and if I change one it changes the other. It is only me that uses it and I only have 1 iphone. I only use Itunes on one pc at a time ie wouldn't have itunes open on both pcs at the same time. What is the best option?
Would setting the itunes library to be stored on a NAS work? But I have read a couple of posts that using a nas can be slow?
Any other better suggestions?

There is PC software that can sync across a local area network and keep the iTunes Music Folder updated.
You obviously need iTunes Advanced Preferences "Copy to my iTunes folder when importing" and "Keep my iTunes Folder organized" enabled on both.
All your music (or a copy) has to be in your iTunes Music folder imported via iTunes. If it's not, like you got your music all over the place, your going to have to complete this first.
When you make playlist and other iTunes changes, it changes the .xml file in the iTunes Folder.
So by syncing the whole iTunes Folder, including the .xml file using PC software that looks at the date of each file and updates in either direction so both remain current, every time you open up iTunes it will use the latest files.
Scheduling the sync will have to occur at a set time when both machines are on, but iTunes not in memory. Should only take seconds, unless you have a large amount occurring on one machine and not the other.
It's even possible to create a batch script that will perform the sync when the two computers are first turned on (after a wait of course), or before iTunes is started it runs the sync first.
I can't recommend any software, but at least now you know what you can do and what to look for.

• Dependent Values read only or all possible values

Hello
I have read the following instructions.
[How to Configure Predefined Properties with Dependent Values (NW7.0)]|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/30b1ec90-0201-0010-6192-d3de721f8ae4?quicklink=index&overridelayout=true]
I need this scenario in the Portal search.
So my question is:
Is it possible, if Country is empty, that the field City is read only.
In the How to guide you can see , if no city is selected the property city is a text field(not Dropdown) and you can enter a sting.
Or it is possible, if no country is selected that the field city shows all possible cities, not restricted by countries.
For example no country is selected and the field city shows all cities.
or no country is selected and the field city is read only.
The html code of dropdown list country is
GermanyFrance
Value of no selection
<empty&gt = <empty>
If no country is selected the selected value is <empty&gt or <empty>.
I tried this:
"dependon=Country,*=allcities,Germany=GermanyCity,France=FrenchCity" and so on.
"dependon=Country,<empty>=allcities,Germany=GermanyCity,France=FrenchCity" and so on.
"dependon=Country,<empty&gt=allcities,Germany=GermanyCity,France=FrenchCity" and so on.
without success
Can some one help?

Hi
Yes, it is possible to generate an excel file in SAP. You can use any of the following FM's for the same:
1. EXCEL_OLE_STANDARD_DAT
2. GUI_DOWNLOAD
3. XXL_FULL_API
Hope it will help.

• Front Row unable to read from itunes library

ok, i have been trying to figure this out but it seems that front row cant read from my itunes library.
I have tried closing itunes and it doesnt do anything. I get the error that i must add stuff to itunes. any ideas?

Hi Chris
I found a workaround, but it's quite painful to use it if you have, like me, a lot of different folders.
In fact, the best solution is to clean up your iPhoto Library by running iPhoto from the Dock while holding Alt. You can create a fresh new library and start all over again.
Then, try to import only ONE folder at a time. Eventually, you will have to repeat that as many times as needed. But, at least, iPhoto should still be working fine (you can organize your folders just as you would have done before), and you should start seeing some folders in Front Row.
Note that iTunes works exactly the same way: if you want to group some playlists within a folder, Front Row won't be able to show them!
Hope this helps.

• New computer / itunes library possible issues

I'm about ready to transfer my itunes library/songs to my new laptop. I've scanned the forums to find out the obvious stuff, so now I have a few additional questions.
First, my current condition. All of my music (8000+ tracks) is sitting in an external hard drive. The latest library files have been burned on a CD, and I haven't plugged in my ipod since. My new laptop has itunes 8 loaded, nothing else. Conventional wisdom tells me that all I need to do is load the library files, then plug in and transfer the song files, and then my music, playlists, play counts, etc should be fine.
Here's my concern: my old desktop (where my itunes library resided) was too wimpy to handle all the GBs of my collection, so the library is programmed to look for song files directly on my external hard drive. Will this be an issue? Further; I have less than 1000 songs originally loaded on the desktop itself, and even though all those songs are on the external hard drive, I believe itunes is still pulling from the desktop drive (I know this because if the hard drive is not connected, itunes can still play these few tracks and no more; I didn't have the nerve to delete these tracks to test further).
Whatever the solution, I would like to keep all my play counts, but if that is not feasible, I can live with it (its the music, not the stats that matter, eh?).
So in summary; can I plug and play, and if not, what's the smoothest way to get my library to recognize all my tracks? Thanks!

OK, I finally made the plunge, with 95% success (more on that later).
First, I ran with the assumption that I had consolidated my files on the external hard drive long ago (back when I started using the external) and that I didn't need to do it again.
I assumed this based on two things. One; when I temporarily changed the internal drive folder name, the files still played via the external and didn't play at all when the external was unplugged. Two; I found a post on another message board that said that if itunes cannot find it's programmed path, it'll go with the default itunes path.
Anyway, the following steps I took were successful:
I had downloaded v8 on the old computer to match with the new.
I copied both itunes library files onto my external drive.
I made sure that the external drive was F: for both computers. (a step I found on another discussion board)
I copied the library files over the blank library files of the new laptop.
Then I set my itunes preferences to organize files.
Then I consolidated my library to the new compter's drive as my means to download from the external (something that I also found explicitely on another message board).
So, everything seemed to work, except that those files that I had originally loaded on the old computer's drive never transferred from the external to the new computer. This only represents a fraction of my music, so I'm mostly relieved that the system works. I realize had I consolidated the first time, as I was instructed, I wouldn't have this problem (so much for being ultra careful, but still making an assumption leading to a shortcut leading to a 'd'oh!' moment).
I'll start a new thread later on ideas on how to move over the remaining music without messing up what's already there. But at least this finishes the thread on moving from an external to a new computer. Thanks!

• ITunes Library possibly trapped/corrupted on Time Capsule

I am taking my MacBook Pro, my Time Capsule wireless router/hard drive/backup unit and my other MyBook hard drive to the Apple store tomorrow. Because the MacBook Pro doesn't have enough memory to hold my massive iTunes Library and iPhoto library, at the recommendation of one of the Apple store geniuses (tech support people) I purchased a 1 TB Time Capsule that also holds my iTunes Library and my photos are all on a MyBook hard drive. The Time Capsule disconnects regularly, but Saturday night it disconnected and wouldn't reconnect. So I have no internet, no email access, and I cannot access my iTunes Library. I am afraid the library has been damaged, although it still exists on my 160GB iPod Classic. If the Time Capsule is corrupted then there is NO WAY to get data off the unit according to the discussion forums I have seen on the Apple website and elsewhere, although I haven’t really read anything official from Apple people. They also don’t really make it easy or possible to move things from the iPod device BACK to a new, uncorrupted iTunes library on the computer or a hard drive. I am going to ask Apple to fix the Time Capsule and move the iTunes Library to the MyBook HD (or I'll purchase a larger HD if there isn't room). I don’t know if they will or if they can. I certainly know that they won’t attempt anything like that for free, or while I wait in the store. I am very frustrated and anxious about my iTunes library – I have almost 100 GB of music, videos, and podcasts. Any thoughts? Is there another forum that would be a better place to ask for any advice?

First never use the TC as the main source of your files, always have a backup on a usb or firewire external or if using a Mac Pro on a secondary hard drive. You could pull that TC hard drive and connect it to an external to get your files. Not a difficult thing to do.
If the TC disconnects often then you must have an interference problem which needs counter measured. Try an ethernet connector and by pass the wireless for a moment.

• New iMac, same iTunes library possible?

I'm in the process of buying a brand new iMac for myself, instead of using the family iMac all the time. I'd like to have the same iTunes library, and preferably a copy on my hard drive. Will iTunes Home Sharing do this, or will I have to do this in some other way? I'm aware of Migration Assistant, but I believe that it only moves files and applications, it doesn't copy them.
Thanks in advance,

to an extent, yes. home sharing will not bring playcounts and ratings over. also, unless you have embedded artwork manually in the files, it won't copy.
or will I have to do this in some other way?
the simplest way would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in _*Target Disk Mode*_, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the source (family Mac) to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the new Mac (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).

• Reading old iTunes library on new Macbook Pro

I'm hoping someone can help me, because I can't find anything on the interwebs ... I just bought a Macbook Pro (2015) and am upgrading from a late-08 Macbook. A long time ago, I moved my iTunes library to an external hard drive because it had outgrown the space on my macbook.
Now I'm trying to connect my XHD to my new computer and access the library, but can't. I hold Option and open iTunes, then try to point it to my library, but get the error message: "An iTunes library could not be found in the folder "iTunes". Please choose a different folder." Which makes no sense, since THAT'S where my library is! What am I doing wrong? If I connect my XHD to my old machine, it reads it just fine.

No not do it changing preferences. That does as it says; it just relocates media, not the whole library which is more than media.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.

• Locking a subset of Wiki pages as read-only: Is this possible?

I have a workspace setup where all participants have workspace-member role privilege which allows them to update content - and in particular - wiki pages. This is a business requirement for this particular site purpose.
However - I would like to lock down one (or more) wiki pages within the pages on this workspace - as read-only.
Is it possible to have some pages within a workspace locked as read-only to named users - while the other wiki pages are available for update to workspace participants? If so - how?
Thank you

Hi,
No, we cannot selectively lock down Wiki pages as read only unfortunately as we don't have access controls at the individual page level.
However, what may be doable is for you to flag the page as non-changeable and to set up an RSS feed to the Wiki page and if anyone changes it you can go in an look at who did it and more importantly you can roll it back to the previous version as the change logs will be kept and can be backed out if required. There is an entry here: http://weblog.oraclecorp.com/weblog/team/Beehive that shows how to set up specific RSS feeds.
Not ideal but a possible way of catching any unauthorized change and correcting it + giving you the culprit :-)
