Read Out Loud Doesn't Read
Need help troubleshooting why Read Out Loud feature doesn't work. Sound on PC works fine. PDF can be read by JAWS (screen reader) but I can not get the PDF to be read using Acrobat 9 Pro or Adobe Reader 9. I just received an email from someone else having same problem. I'm assuming software conflict but am wondering which program is causing the problem. Any insight? FYI - I am selecting "Read This Page" after activating Read Out Loud.
we are having the same problem. Using Win XP SP 2, Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended. Will not read the document. Sound works on the pc, other programs play sound. Looking for a resolution.

My adobe reader X "Read Out Loud" doesn't work,
After going to view, then to "read out loud" then to activate, then back to "read out loud" then to "read this page only"..... nothing!.. no sound, no message, nothing. How can I fix this?
Same for me. Adobe Reader 10, no updates, no change after uninstall/reinstall. I am using Windows 7 and Microsoft narrator voices work in other applications. Even after copying text to Word, verifying that it is letter by letter typed and choosing a recommended font, then saving as a .pdf and reopening in Adobe Reader X.It also does not matter if I select the text or not.
Gives me the option to "activate" with all other options greyed out. When activated, the other options become available but there is no voice. If I choose "read to end of document" Adobe Reader crashes. -

Read Out Loud won't read tags, reads content instead
Hi,
I have a PDF generated through a third party library, and it is a tagged PDF (running it in PAC 1.3 and 2.0 says it passes accessibility test) and when I use the Read Out Loud feature on it in Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and Adobe Reader, it ignores all the tags (including any Alternate and Actual text fields) and reads the content of the PDF instead of the tags. It even reads the header and the footer which are marked as Artifacts, which is strange as Artifacts should never be read out loud. When I run NVDA and have it read the PDF, it reads it normally as expected (reads only the tags, and follows the Alternate/Actual text fields).

Here's an example of the file. I would expect the Read Out Loud feature to start with "I don't know", but instead it says DEVELOPMENT (an artifact) and then I D N, then I expect it to get to the last line of text before the footer and then simply continue to the second page, but it will instead read the header and the footer before it moves on to the next page. Any reason why it behaves like this? Why it ignores the tags and why it doesn't ignore the artifacts?

In order to make a sample of the pdf I changed actual code to produce the PDF I have linked to in my original post, and I didn't actually check that it passes PAC 1.3 and 2.0, as I simply believed that my code change did exactly the same thing that the production code does. It of course did not, and I gave you a "possessed" PDF Sorry about that. Here is a new sample, this time done a bit better

In PAC 1.3 it only warns about bookmarks, in 2.0 it fails the font embedding which should not be an issue and says PDF/UA identifier is not set - this might be the issue, but I do not know how to set it, I understood that all I need is to have the Title, Language and some other metadata fields set for the PDF to be PDF/UA compliant.

Read Out Loud freezes Adobe Reader
I have Adobe Reader 8.1.5. I downloaded a PDF version of a book I created on Wikipedia to my jump drive, and I tried ou Read Out Loud. After a few minutes, however, It started acting strange. It froze, showed a progress bar at full, and (when I clicked on a menu, as they worked) the menus started flashing randomly. What is wrong?
I am also seeing the same issue. I'm using a Mac OSX 10.6.8. Read out lout is supposed to save me time in reading, however it does the opposite when the system becomes unstable and crashes. Sometimes it will crash, other times it will freeze and I have to Force Quit. Some other cases, it will begin read-out-loud and then change pages and read only the first word of each page until it either hits the end of the document or I Force Quit. Here is the error log for my crash today. Since they do call it Adobe "Reader" hopefully Adobe will put some attention to fixing Read-Out-Loud to work smoothly.

Would it be too much to ask that the iOS version of Adobe Reader features a screen reading capability like the PC version? Print disabled users also wish to read PDFs on their portable devices, after all.
Page turn is a Flash features and is just not a PDF feature. It's not in the PDF specification.
There are hokey workarounds on the desktop like placing SWF files into InDesign. None of that would work on an iPad.
iBooks has done their own implementation of the page turn, unique to that application. -
Acrobat 9 Pro can't read out loud
I've always been able to use Acrobat's "Read Out Loud" feature to help me proof complex documents by having Acrobat read the PDF aloud while I read the original to check for discrepancies. Since upgrading to Acrobat 9 Pro Extended version 9.4.6 on Windows 7, I can't get the Read Out Loud feature to work. The document is fully tagged, the sound and speakers are working correctly. After activating the Read Out Loud feature (View->Read Out Loud->Activate Read Out Loud), when I select any of the options (e.g., Read This Page Only or Read to End of Document), Acrobat crashes. It doesn't matter if I'm using a PDF generated from Framemaker or one downloaded from Adobe's site.
I've read through Adobe's Help forums and can't find a solution. Has anyone had and successfully resolved this problem?:

Read Out Loud: Setting voice speed?
Setting voice speed in Read Out Loud doesn't work right. When I choose Adobe Reader > Preferences and uncheck the “Use default speech attributes” checkbox, and then change the number in the “Words per minute” field within the allowable range, click OK and then choose View > Read Out Loud, the reading rate DOES NOT CHANGE, no matter what numbers I set in the “Words per minute” field.
This worked in previous versions of Adobe Reader. Why doesn't it work in the current version? I used to use this feature a lot, and it is very annoying that it reads at the same slow, plodding rate no matter what I set it to.

Read out Loud isn't working in Adobe Reader.
I have clicked on the "view" tab - clicked on "Read out Loud" - clicked on " Read to the end of document" and I have no sound. I have checked sound on computer and it is turned on..Help I need to do a assignment.
The fact it's a PDF or that you see text on the page doesn't mean it's actually text. Most likely, it's just an image that contains text in it. As such, the ROL feature can't recognize that text and can't do anything with it. If you try to select it with the mouse you'll see that it selects the entire page.
There's nothing you can do about it in Reader, though. You need to run Text Recognition on the file using Adobe Acrobat. -
Can the Read Out Loud tool read tooltips?
Hello,
I have created a PDF with a text form field where the user will enter his/her name and then print a course completion certificate. I have named the text form field and added a tooltip.
1. It looks fine in Form Edit mode but there is text that looks like it's behind the tool tip. It is different words than the tooltip and larger font size. I can't remember how I got that text there. I just wanted to edit it a little bit but can't find where to do so. Any suggestions?
2. I have made this form accessibile but is there a way to have the Read Out Loud tool actually read the tooltips?
3. Also, how do I add a screen shot to this discussion?

Adobe Reader 7.1 crashes on Mac OSX with Read Out Loud
I installed a Cepstral voice as the default on my Mac OSX 10.3.9. When I try to use the Adobe Reader "Read Out Loud" function, Adobe Reader 7.1 crashes. It didn't do this before installing the new voice. How can I fix this? THanks, Pam

For some reason, Adobe Read Out Loud is now reading the punctuation in the text. Commas, periods, etc. and, as you can imagine, it is distracting to the students. I feel like I have looked everywhere in Adobe Acrobat for a setting to change, but could not find one. I searched on this forum and using Google and see that others are experiencing a similar issue, but have not come across a solution.

GinaIt would appear that it is only doing this when 'Alex's' voice is used...the other voices read from the begining all the way to the end...
could it simply be a fault associated with alex voice?? -
Navigate to next paragraph while using Read out loud
Hi all,
I'm trying to use the new read out loud and feature. Everything works great but i do have one small question.
I've opened a file, enabled read out loud and started read out loud. The current paragraph is surrounded by a square and read out loud. When it finishes readiing this paragraph, the read out loud stops reading. If i push the down arrow key till i get to the next paragraph it continues reading the next paragraph.
This is really nice but i was wondering if there is some sort of keyboard combination that will move the cursor to the next paragraph without having to press the down arrow untill the cursor moves to the next paragraph?
BBasically what i'm asking is: Is there a shortcut key for moving to the next paragraph?
If there is no such built in keyboard, is there a way to create such a custom shortcut?

Shift+Ctrl+Y — for on/off
Shift+Ctrl+V — to read the current page
Shift+Ctrl+B — to read to end of document
Shift+Ctrl+C — to pause
Shift+Ctrl+E — to stop
Also, with the Select Tool in use, you can select text strings.
The rectangle that bounds the select text string correlates the the container (in the structure tree of the tagged PDF) that holds the related text string on the PDF page. Often a given line will have several of the rectangles rather than one. This is related to the use of Grouping elements within the structure tree.
No other "nav" mechanisms.
Remember, ROL, will really rather handy, is a fairly basic text to speech feature and not full-fledged AT.
While basic in nature ROL can be pretty serviceable (within its limitations) if the PDF is a well-formed Tagged PDF.
To create something? Maybe, with c/c+ you could whip up a plug-in. Something a PDF developer could tell you.
Won't bother? AT applications already provide what you've expressed an interest in.
Perhaps NVDA would be worth a try for a first "fitting". It is capable and free.
If not to you liking try another AT app such as JAWS.

You mean an image such as a scanned document?
If that is the case, the file doesn't contain any text for Reader Out Loud to read. In order to fix that, you would need an application such as Adobe Acrobat that does Optical Character Recognition to convert the images to actual text.
You can also try to export the file as a Word document or something else using ExportPDF which I believe offers OCR and is cheaper than Acrobat.
