Read Out Loud: Setting voice speed?

Setting voice speed in Read Out Loud doesn't work right. When I choose Adobe Reader > Preferences and uncheck the “Use default speech attributes” checkbox, and then change the number in the “Words per minute” field within the allowable range, click OK and then choose View > Read Out Loud, the reading rate DOES NOT CHANGE, no matter what numbers I set in the “Words per minute” field.
This worked in previous versions of Adobe Reader. Why doesn't it work in the current version? I used to use this feature a lot, and it is very annoying that it reads at the same slow, plodding rate no matter what I set it to.

Same problem here. I can change the voice* but even with the "use default speech attributes" button unchecked, changing the pitch or WPM does absolutely nothing. Bug?
* even though I can change the voice, they all sound awful and mechanical - barely like the actual voices when played using other Mac apps. I figure maybe this has something to do with using an incorrect pitch, but since I can't change the pitch, they all just sound awful.

Can't speed up read-out-loud speed

Hi, I'm experiencing the read-out-loud making long pause between words when it is activated. I tried with "Edit=>Preferences=>reading=>words per minute" but it didn't not really work. It only made each word being read faster, but it didn't shorten the pause between words. Does anyone have similar experience and know how to fix this?

Read Out Loud Not Working - Acrobat Pro v9.2

Hi,
I'm working my way through the Adobe Acrobat 9 Classroom in a Book and in Lesson 6 came to a section for accessibility and the Read Out Loud feature. However, when I follow the lesson (and instructions in the Adobe Help files), nothing happens. No sound, nothing.
I'm using Acrobat Pro v9.2 and Windows Vista.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been searching through the Forums, Help Files, and Google to try to find a solution or maybe see whay I could be doing wrong, but have come up empty.
I have checked my volume and it is set at maximum volume, and Read Out Load is activated under View -> Read Out Loud.

I didn't know anything opened up when it was activated and set to read so I paid attention to what was happening and noticed the bar on the bottom, but it was there only a second before disappearing. So then I thought to set my preference to a very slow speed (which I learned can't be less than 150 words a minute) and I also changed the voice to a Microsoft voice (SanSoft voices were the other choices). When I tried again, it worked. I don't know if it was the speed or the voice or both, but I never would have considered those if I hadn't been aware of the bar. It must have shown before but it was so quick and I wasn't looking for it that I must have missed it.

Feedback for Reader-Read Out Loud

For Adobe, I am surprised at the low level of quality of Adobe Reaader-Read Out Loud. It cannot pronounce simple words and sounds so robotic as to make the feature painful to use. Why read page headers instead of continuing with a paragraph? Why read a paragraph full of references? Why no option to skip sections of a page? I could go on, but I will just say that it is obvious that Adobe cares little for this program. Come on Adobe, you can do way better than this.

Adobe Reader - Read out loud

When I try to activate the Read Out Loud function in the Adobe Reader the software closes. Does anyone know how to get this fixed. I am currently using 9.3.2 and it still does not work. My operating system is Windows Vista.

Read Out Loud reading punctuation

Help! I am using Adobe Read Out Loud with students with disabilities that benefit from hearing their textbooks read aloud while following along with the textbook on the screen. For some reason, Adobe Read Out Loud is now reading the punctuation in the text. Commas, periods, etc. and, as you can imagine, it is distracting to the students. I feel like I have looked everywhere in Adobe Acrobat for a setting to change, but could not find one. I searched on this forum and using Google and see that others are experiencing a similar issue, but have not come across a solution.

It would appear that it is only doing this when 'Alex's' voice is used...the other voices read from the begining all the way to the end...
could it simply be a fault associated with alex voice??

Adobe Reader- Read Out Loud Feature

When using the Read Out Loud Feature I've noticed that there are only two mechanical sounding voices to chose from, one male and one female. Is there an option setting where I can use my own voice?

Not so far as I know. Creating a voice for reading is not about
recording samples, but about creating a kind of robotic voice,
something which is an enormous amout of highly skilled work. (Though I
don't work in the area and may have it wrong).

Read Out Loud won't read tags, reads content instead

Hi,
I have a PDF generated through a third party library, and it is a tagged PDF (running it in PAC 1.3 and 2.0 says it passes accessibility test) and when I use the Read Out Loud feature on it in Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and Adobe Reader, it ignores all the tags (including any Alternate and Actual text fields) and reads the content of the PDF instead of the tags. It even reads the header and the footer which are marked as Artifacts, which is strange as Artifacts should never be read out loud. When I run NVDA and have it read the PDF, it reads it normally as expected (reads only the tags, and follows the Alternate/Actual text fields).

Here's an example of the file. I would expect the Read Out Loud feature to start with "I don't know", but instead it says DEVELOPMENT (an artifact) and then I D N, then I expect it to get to the last line of text before the footer and then simply continue to the second page, but it will instead read the header and the footer before it moves on to the next page. Any reason why it behaves like this? Why it ignores the tags and why it doesn't ignore the artifacts?

Thank you for your reply.
In order to make a sample of the pdf I changed actual code to produce the PDF I have linked to in my original post, and I didn't actually check that it passes PAC 1.3 and 2.0, as I simply believed that my code change did exactly the same thing that the production code does. It of course did not, and I gave you a "possessed" PDF Sorry about that. Here is a new sample, this time done a bit better

In PAC 1.3 it only warns about bookmarks, in 2.0 it fails the font embedding which should not be an issue and says PDF/UA identifier is not set - this might be the issue, but I do not know how to set it, I understood that all I need is to have the Title, Language and some other metadata fields set for the PDF to be PDF/UA compliant.
Anyway, I hope this sample works out better for you

Read Out Loud Not working in Adobe Reader XI

Read Out Loud is not working. I have selected the the Microsoft Anna voice in preferences. I have selected the recommended "infer order from doc". I am at a loss to know why it does not work. I am using MS Office Professional 2013. Please help if you can.

Are you sure that the pdf you have isn't a scan? If so, that's just a picture of text so there is nothing to be read.

Accessible PDF not reading out Loud

After tagging in Adobe InDesign and creating the accessible PDF and running accessiblity full check and document passes.
Adobe Reader automaticly starts reading the cover then on next page its not reading paragraph, but If I select a line it reads that line only.

If the Accessibility Full Check in Acrobat X says everything is fine, then you are all set.
Likely you were already practicing flowing threaded text frames, along with the careful use of paragraph and character styles. If you have also ALT-tagged the images, then you are doing essentially 99.99% percent of what you can do. ALT tagging can be done either in InDesign or after the fact in the Tags panel of Acrobat Pro.
I recommend that you upgrade to Acrobat XI (Acrobat DC is too new to have an opinion on it yet). And if you are going to do a lot of Accessibility fussing, do so on a Windows version of Acrobat XI--it is stabler.
Reading Out Loud is wonkier on the Mac version, for some reason, and is not necessarily the same way a true speech reader would go through the file. OTOH, if you get it to read out loud correctly, and the Tags panel is in the correct flow sequence, then you are fine.

Adobe Reader 7.1 crashes on Mac OSX with Read Out Loud

I installed a Cepstral voice as the default on my Mac OSX 10.3.9. When I try to use the Adobe Reader "Read Out Loud" function, Adobe Reader 7.1 crashes. It didn't do this before installing the new voice. How can I fix this? THanks, Pam

Read out loud isn't following tag structure across multiple pages

I have an InDesign CC document where the main story falls across several pages. It wraps around a standalone sidebar that fits one page, as well as another sidebar that also jumps to other pages. I set up the element order in the Articles palette, and it looks like the structure is set to read the main story first in its entirety, then move on through the sidebars, each in its entirety.
In Acrobat CC, I set the tab order to use the document structure within Page Thumbnails, and took the other required steps. The accessibility check comes up clean.
However, Read Out Loud reads everything on one page, then moves to the next page. It ignores the InDesign structure. The Acrobat tags window also shows my desired reading order, but it's not being followed.
Is there something else I need to do, or is this reading order just not possible?

Assistive Technology (AT) uses the PDF's structure tree. Without a well-formed structure tree AT will "see" a PDF as a lump of coal.
What's that got to do with ROL? ROL is *not* AT. ROL is a nice but simple text to speech feature. ROL parses PDF page content left to right top down for western languages. The PDF does not have to be a tagged PDF for ROL to parse the PDF page content (I've been using it to do that snce Acrobat 8 Pro). In sum - Acrobat / Reader ROL only processes through what is renderable text on the PDF page. PDF elements (tags) exist separately from both the logical structure of a PDF and the PDF's page content (discussed in ISO 32000-1, see 14.8).
So, nothing wrong or broken. ROL is doing what it was designed to do.
Try NVDA if you want to parse the structure tree and have the associated content "spoken" to you. I suspect you'll be pleased.

Adobe Reader 7.1 crashes on Mac when selecting "Read Out Loud"

I installed a Cepstral voice (5.1) on my Mac OSX 10.3.9 as the default voice to use with Adobe Reader 7.1. Now, when I select "Read Out Loud" from the View menu to activate the text-to-speech, Adobe Reader crashes. How can I fix this? Thanks!

Read Out Loud shortens single words

Hi, I have Adobe Reader 9.3.2 on PC. READ OUT LOUD (ROL) works fine for pages and documents.
Here is the problem:
When ROL reads a single word it removes the last character.To read a single word I switch on ROL and then click in a word. A solid box surrounds the word and then ROL reads the word. Here are some examples. Here is a sample showing where I clicked in the middle of the current text.
word - ROL says: wor (one letter short! Not OK)
words - ROL says: word (one letter short! Not OK)
word) - ROL says: word (kind of OK? )
word! - ROL says: word (kind of OK? )
Any ideas? To me the problem is that ROL is outlining one character short...
