Reader X long delay opening multiple documents

I have Reader X (10.0.1).  With Protected Mode enabled, there is a 30-second (or more) delay when opening a second (or third, etc.) PDF document.  Task manager does not show any processor usage during this time.  Any ideas how to fix this?
Hardware & OS: P4 3.2 GHz w/ HT enabled, 2.5 GB RAM, Win XP Pro SP3

In case you haven't already found a solution, here's a fix I found in another forum:
Go to Edit / preferences / general - the uncheck box "Enable protected mode at startup" This got rid of the lag in opening adobe docs.
It works!

Someone here mentioned this: "Acrobat 9 no longer supports opening multiple documents in the same window."
This is disappointing.. does anyone know the workaround / hack?
    Running Acrobat 9 Standard.
    Thanks,
    Devin

Unfortunately yes you're correct. The cause was due to no MDI support, which Adobe removed starting at v9.

If I find a workaround worth mentioning, I'll post it here later.

    Hi ...
Checked to see how much free space there is on the startup disk lately?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

If disk space is not the issue, booting in Safe Mode deletes system caches that may help.
A Safe Mode boot takes longer then a normal boot so be patient.
Once you see the Desktop, click the Apple menu icon top left corner of the screen.
From the drop down menu click Restart.
See if that makes a difference ...

  • Indesign CS6 crashes when opening multiple documents

Only recently, Indesign has started crashing when I open multiple documents.
Nothing new has been installed on the computer as far as I know.
I've tried trashing the preferences, accessing the files locally, wiping the computer and diaognosing the iMac hardware... without success.
It's slightly more stable, as in it doesn't crash everytime now but instead more randomly than before.
Program has never crashed with one document open.
Interesting thing is if several files are open, then I close then individually, then close down fine. If I try to quit and close all of them in one go, Indesign crashes.
Also occasionally has problems displaying links, eg. displays a grey box instead of an eps file.
I have several crash log files in case someone is able to decipher them.

    1. Is there any reason to use eps? Avoid it use AI, PSD or PDF instead.
    2. Are all used fonts ok? What kind of fonts du you use?
    3. Which Mac OS X do you use?
Does it crash with alwayst the same files?
What does the file history tell you? Hold down the command key and got to InDesign > About InDesign… Does it tell you somewhat more specific, like missing plugins, severly damaged files and restored files, when (in which version) the files have been created first (helps often to export to IDML and open this again and save it as INDD and work with the new file.), has the problematic file been converted from another application (Quark Xpress or PageMaker), etc.

  • When you open multiple documents, what's the rhyme and reason for the order the tabs are arranged?

Hi, a student had a question and I honestly never thought about this: when you open multiple documents in Photoshop CS4, what's the rhyme and reason behind the order they're arranged in (left to right?). Sometimes they're in one order and sometimes they're in another, and it doesn't always correspond with the filenames or the order in which they were selected.
Thanks, hope someone can enlighten us. It's probably really obvious, but... !

My student says that's not exactly what she was asking. What she meant was, is the arrangement of multiple tabbed documents open within Photoshop (which one is furthest left, which one comes next to it, which one is furthest right etc) dependent on something? In what order they were opened, alphabetical, date created or what?

  • Opening multiple documents

I'm experiencing a strange and intermittent problem when I try to open multiple documents from the Finder. If I select a number of items and try to open them all at once, sometimes only some of the documents open.
Just now, I attempted to open 15 documents in Dreamweaver and only nine opened. The only commonality I could find is the modification date: the ones that opened were all modified yesterday at 4:02pm or earlier, while the six that didn't open were modified 4:08 or later. When I select any or all of those six, only the most-recently modified opens. Same behavior regardless of how I try to open them: multiple-select and (1) double-click, (2) drag all to Dock icon, (3) right-click and Open/Open with...
When it happens, I usually work around it by using the applications Open dialog and selecting the items there. It's been happening for weeks/months (possibly since upgrading to 10.6.4?), and I've just lived with it, but it's becoming frustrating; for instance, if I want to do a batch automated task in Photoshop or a search-and-replace in Dreamweaver in all open documents...only to discover that not all of my documents were open.
    Thanks in advance.

Does this behavior occur with Mac applications, or only Adobe apps?

  • [SOLVED]Long delay opening files if multiple selection in file chooser

    neok wrote:
    Hi,
When I try to open several files in an application, (example: Gimp), by multiple selection in the 'open' filechooser, there is a long delay (about 1 sec per file) before the Gimp starts opening image files. During this delay, the disk access LED flashes continuously and iotop indicates that its jbd2 accessing (writing) on the / partition on my SSD drive. This is despite the fact that the image files are on an external USB hard disk and the Gimp would have no reason to write anything on the / partition. Even if it did, the image files are small (50-100 kb) and such a long delay would be out of place.
The significant thing is that the delay occurs _before_ the Gimp starts opening files. It seems the delay is in the filechooser making a list of the files to be opened. Once the Gimp starts opening files, it finishes quickly.
This sort of thing happens with other apps that can open several files by multiple selection in a filechooser.
Any hints please? I am lost here :-(
The delay is caused by (apparently) GTK which writes to the ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel file, to record all the files that are opened in the multiple selction. Even so, this writing seems too slow, even when opening a large number of files (the ones that I open by multiple selection, by an app that I am working on, are about 10k each, so opening a few hundred should not take the delay I see, about 30 sec).
Anyhow, I patched the problem eventually by chattr +i ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel to stop the writing. But I would prefer to disable the use of this file by configurtion rather than brute force, if there is such a choice.

I re-installed and reconfigured Arch so that I now have a fresh, uptodate system. In the process, I found that this problem occurs when I run the Gimp as a normal user. If I run it under sudo, all is well. I am strggling to find out why, but no results so far (have checked file permissions where I thought there may be a problem, but no joy).
    Any hints much appreciated.

  • Opening multiple documents in pages

There was a discussion of this last February, but I want to follow up and ask, again, is there any way to open and work back and forth between multiple documents in ipad 2 Pages? If I have 2 versions of a text, say 2 drafts of a book chapter, I need to be able to compare texts closely in order to copy, paste, and edit. This is very inconvenient if I have to constantly close one draft and then open the other. Is there any way to have the 2 drafts open simultaneously, side by side or stacked, or to move back and forth quickly between the 2 drafts?
    Thanks,
    Dousik

This is not a way to open the actual documents side by side, but it is a possible solution to the situation of needing to match the layout of Document 1 to the layout of Document 2.
    1. Create an image file of Document 1. (Open Document 1 and take a screenshot.)
    2. Open Document 2.
    3. Under Tools/Document Setup, click +, then add image from camera roll of Document 1.
    4. Adjust image size to match document size. (Select image, then click and drag nodes to edge of document.)
    5. With image selected, click (paintbrush icon) Format/Style/Style Options/Opacity. Adjust Opacity down to around 30 percent (you can adjust to personal preference later after you see how it works for you.)
    6. Click Arrange (still under Format) and send image to the back, then Lock.
    7. Click Done.
    8. Now you can match sizes/fonts/style of background Document 1 while working in Document 2.
    9. When you are done, go back to document layout and unlock, then delete image of Document 1.
I agree we still need the side by side view for copy and paste speed, but until Apple Developers come to the rescue for us, this could save a little time when matching layout of existing document. I hope this helps out in the mean time! :)

  • Open Multiple Documents on Initialization

I'm using Javascript to open several documents for a PDF form I'm creating in Acrobat Pro.
I'd like to open these 4 additional PDF forms when the user opens the master PDF form so that I can display them when the user clicks a specific check box.  I have tried opening them with the openDoc method in a function that runs when this document is initialized but I get the following error:
Security settings prevent access to this property or method.
What I'm trying to do is get these supplemental forms open in Reader and show them at the appropriate time.  I would also like to prevent the user from closing the forms as they will contain required information if they click a checkbox corresponding to one of the supplemental forms.  I was hoping to get a handle to each of the forms on document initialization so that I can prevent them from closing any of these supplemental forms.
Am I taking the best approach?  If so, how can I accomplish this with Javascript?  If not, what's the best method?
    Thanks for your help.

    Thanks, Patrick, for your response.
I've decided to try a different approach.  I've consolidated all of the forms into one PDF file by inserting the other documents as separate pages into the master PDF file.  This way, I can easily access the information from all of the forms without worrying about the need to disclose.
I'd like to be able to delete the pages that the user hasn't filled out and provide this in Acrobat Reader.  I've used the Javascript deletePages() method but the documentation tells me that I need to enable forms rights for this functionality in Reader.
How do I enable forms rights in my PDF file?

  • How do I open multiple documents at a time?

In Adobe reader for Windows 8, whenever I have a document open and then double click on another document to open it, the new document just replaces the old one in the Adobe reader window. How do I open up both documents at once in order to view them side by side? I can workaround this problem by using other programs but it would be nice if there was a way to have both documents open in Adobe reader.

If you have full Windows 8, you can use the regular Windows version of Adobe Reader, which is much more capable.

  • Lion Dictates Opening Multiple Documents

This is really nuts and makes me wonder about OS Lion.  I installed it on two Macs several days ago.  Now, when I double click on one Excel document, it opens several different Excel documents that I have been working on, even though they are not subject matter related.
The same occurs with opening a Word or pdf document (Preview or Adobe Reader).
The result, if I am working on Excel and Word documents at the same time is that whenever I open one, then perhaps 5 to 10 documents commence opening at the same time.  If some of the Excel documents have macros, then this process takes quite a while and is completely unsatisfactory due to the interruption in attempting to work on a single project.
As an example, I had a Word and Excel document both opened and needed to then open a pdf for reference and insert a photo for iPhoto.  Viola!  Three different pdf documents then opened and ten photos rather than the simple one that I selected also opened.  The desktop was totally littered with documents that are not related to the subject matter that I was working on.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

It is one of the over 250 new features of the World's Most Advanced Operating System called Resume.
When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
Also, you can hold the shift key to disable resume on a one time basis.
If you want to turn it off on a per app basis, (TextEdit is by example, replace TextEdit with the name of the app)
Launch Terminal and copy/paste this at the prompt...
defaults write com.apple.TextEdit NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false
    Press return.
You can aslo accomplish this through the GUI by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State/TextEdit and delete that file/
    To turn off Resume globally...
    chflags uchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
    Press return
The reverse of the first one is to replace false with true.
The reverse of the second one is
    chflags nouchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
Again, you can accomplish this through Finder by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State and deleting the folder.

  • Long delay opening files

Just installed Dreamweaver 8 & all updates on an intel
Mac. Everytime I go to open a file I get the beachball for up to 30
seconds before I can open the file. Ive reinstalled & the
behavior is unchanged. Would appreciate any clues.

To answer your questions. I don't use DW to work remotely, I
only work locally. All of my local files are kept on a windows
server accessed via AFP. There are no external images being
accessed & the delays are for opening any file, even a blank
file. I do notice that when I use the open recent feature the files
open automatically with no delay. But there are also delays when I
change view mode and when I edit anything in design mode.
