Rearranging the sequence of login startup items

A couple of months ago, I bought a Mac Mini with Leopard. But I can't change the order of the startup items as I could with Panther. Is that just the way it is and I need to contact Apple to request that functionality be returned, or am I missing something? (I've tried Option-clicking and Command-clicking.)

I disagree. I want the daemon for my wireless control device to launch first because, when it launches last, the device doesn't respond per my preferences.
There's an obvious delay for applications later in the sequence.

  • Login / startup items not loading at boot

    Since 10.10.1, I've had a problem with my login / startup items not all loading at startup.  It occurs about 1 in 3 boots (only half of my items load).  Any idea what could be causing this?

    A little more info . . . I've done a fresh install (cloned to an external drive, erased my internal SSD, installed Yosemite 10.10.2 from a USB stick, migrated everything from the cloned external), and I still have this problem.

  • User has a "startup on login" pref that opens a file named "apple-scc-20111227-074257".  Can't find any reference to this....any idea on what this startup file does or if it can be safely removed as a login-startup item?  thanks.

    Friend has a laptop running OSX 10.6.8, with latest software update 22Jun2012.  One of the User's items to startup on Login is a file titled "
    apple-scc-20111227-074257"
    No idea what this does or where it is located.....any ideas on what it starts up and if it can be safely removed from startup items?  Thanks for any info.

    If you mouse over the item in your Login Items you should see a tool tip indicating where it is.  Alternatively right (control) click on it and a contextual menu item, Reveal in Finder will be shown which you can select to open the folder containing the item.
    By the way the 20111227 portion of that name looks like a date -- 12/27/2011.
    I'm  sure you can delete it.  Nothing major is going to happen.  But you really should find out where it is.
    If Reveal in Finder doesn't show anything it may be because the file is invisible (which might be considered somewhat suspicious).  In that case use the finder find command (command-f) and look for kind filename plus invisible.  Or just use Find any File to find it.

  • Login Startup Items

    I've updated my Tiger 10.4.10 to Leopard and now I am unable to open Settings -> User -> Startup Items. This opens an empty window after a while.

    Does it really say "Startup Items" and not "Login Items"? They stopped calling them "Startup Items" several OS X versions ago so if yours says "Startup Items", that could indicate some very strange failure to update certain components (this assumes you are using "English" as the localization). An "Archive and Install" might be warranted under such circumstances.
    Otherwise, you could try moving the "loginwindow.plist" file (not to be confused with the "com.apple.loginwindow.plist" file) from the user's "~/Library/Preferences" folder - perhaps it has become corrupted and preventing "System Preferences" from reading it, or there is some item common to both machines that the pref pane finds disagreeable. After removing the file, it will of course be necessary to re-add any login items.

  • How do I rearrange the sequence of pictures within "All Photos" album?

    I've just upgraded to Photos. I have 35322 photos and it seems to handle it better than iPhoto.
    I'm finding the "All Photos" album is showing out of chronological sequence, with various "moments" photos intersperced into a variety of different "moments".
    I can't seem to find a way to rearrange the "All Photos" album to be a true chronological sequence, instead of the random sequence it has become.
    What am I missing?

    at top of listings the should be a heading "Track#" if not go to view, veiw options and tick track number the it will show on main screen click this new heading and the tracks should alter to the correct order. Hope this helps

  • TS3493 I too have the Insecure Startup Item Disabled error message.

    The folder is empty, although 319Kb on Disk. I am unable to move it to the Trash as it says it's required by Mac OS X. This is truly infuriating. I have entered Disk Utility and used Repair Permissions. Currently running Mountain Lion, 10.8.3.

    This is incorrect. Most of the time this error happens from faulty permissions settings on the startup items or the StartupItems folder. Startup items should be owned by root (the "system" account) and not be writable by anyone else, but if not then the system will detect this and prevent it from loading, as this means a third-party might have tampered with it and potentially cause a problem (hence the "insecure" characterization).
    Since Startup Items are from third-party installations, often OS X will not include them in a permissions fix routine as there may be no entries for them in the permissions database.
    To correct this problem, run the following two command in the Terminal:
    sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/StartupItems
    sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/StartupItems
    Earlier it was mentioned that a Startup Items folder is within the User library, but this is not the case as Startup Items are only activated at boot and not at login. There is no point for one to be in the user's library, and the system will not look there for any startup items..

  • How can I disable Firefox from automatically opening on system startup on my Mac - unchecking the "open at login" does not work?

    We have Firefox 10.o on our Macbook Pro OS X 10.5.8. I prefer using Firefox as my browser but my husband prefers Safari for now because of a long history of bookmarks and saved information he doesn't have time to re-do. He is tired of Firefox automatically opening when we start up the laptop, and even when we uncheck the "open at login" it still opens at login every time. He is about to uninstall it because of this. How can we disable? It does NOT show up in our account on the Mac OS as an application that starts at login, so we can't disable it there.

    For those of you running Windows, I found this on another site. (Unfortunately, not before getting totally disgusted and switching to chrome.)
    1. click start (or the windows flag button at the bottom left) 2. in the "search programs and files" or the RUN dialog box, enter "msconfig.exe" or "msconfig". 3. That should open the system configuration program. 4. click the "Startup" tab at the top of the opened program. 5. Under the "startup item" column, look for Mozilla firefox. 6. uncheck that one. 7. Click OK or apply. 8. click "exit without restart". 9. you're good to go.

  • Firefox opens at startup on my iMac. It is not in startup items and not checked to open at login.

    There aren't really any more details to add. I have checked everything I can think of in the Library folder and thrown out anything I thought might affect it. Firefox is not set as my default browser.
    I have read many threads of people having this problem both here and on the Apple Support site. Most seem to be solved by unchecking "Open at Login" in the Dock icon or removing Firefox from the Startup Items in the System Preferences. Neither applies here. HELP!!! I like Firefox and use it from time to time but it seems the only way to stop this behavior is to remove it from my computer, which I will do if a solution can't be found.
    Thanks for your efforts.

    Yes. I checked all of the places I could think of and those mentioned in the threads I read. Login items is what I was referring to when I said, "removing Firefox from the Startup Items in the System Preferences".
    This is a nefarious problem!

  • OSX 10.6 .8 -- Firefox automatically starts when I boot up (MacBook Pro Intel). It is not in the Startup Items in System Preferences, and automatic startup is not checked in Firefox Options. Don't know where else to look.

    How do I keep Firefox automatically starts when I boot up (OSX 10.6 .8 -- MacBook Pro Intel). It is not in the Startup Items in System Preferences, and automatic startup is not checked in Firefox Options.

    Hi fullrun-
    Once Firefox is open, you should be able to open the Right click context menu on the icon. From there you select 'Options' and then de-select 'Open at Login'. Hope that helps.

  • How do I add applications to the startup items?

    I see a folder under system:startupitems, but I cannot modify it.

    To run an application automatically at startup use Login Items of Accounts preferences. StartupItems folders are for special types of items. Not used for what you want.
    Open Accounts preferences, click on the Login Items tab. Click the [+] button to add an item. A file Open dialog will appear. Locate the app you wish to add and click on the Open button.

  • A few months ago, my G5 started up with the address book and mail opened at startup. They are not in startup items, and I cannot get this to stop. Any suggestions?

    A few months ago, my power mac G5 began starting up with the address book and mail already open on the desk top.
    Neither of these is in my startup items, so I am at a loss as to stop this behavior.
    Any suggestions?

    Are they in Login items under System Preferences/Users/Login Items?
    In the Dock, right click the Address Book and Mail icons, select Options, and make sure "Open at Login" is not selected.

  • New user - Opening a file on first login, then removing from startup items

    I'm trying to write a script to open a pdf welcoming a new user on an imaged mac. I've written the script "Welcome.app" below
    tell application "Preview"
    open "OS X Tiger:Users:Shared:Welcome.pdf"
    end tell
    do shell script "rm /Users/Shared/Welcome.app"
    I'm having problems with permissions this way. I've tried changing the user and group but no luck so far.
    It was suggested to me to try using "defaults write loginwindow etc" to
    remove the Welcome.app from the startup items, but I'm not sure if this is possible from the terminal.
    Any suggestions?
    Netrestore generic image   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Create a second copy of the loginwindow.plist file in the User Template's Preferences folder with the name loginwindow.original.plist, and use the following two commands after the tell block:
    do shell script "mv ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist ~/.Trash/loginwindow.plist"
    do shell script "mv ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.original.plist ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist"
    The script will then disappear from the startup items, but will remain on the hard disk.

  • How do I rearrange the order of items in a reminder list?

    How do I rearrange the order of items in a reminders list?

    ICal Reminders won't sort on the actual device it was intended for - the Iphone
    I just talked to Apple Express service over this problem.  I went to the trouble of transferring my to-do list onto icloud Reminders - where each item asked for a priority ranking and where you are then given options for how to sort  all the Reminders you entered - so that it can actually be useable as any Calendar/time management system would be.   I chose "by priority" of course, but you can also choose alphabetically, etc.  It must be said, at least to Apple, apparently, that the point of doing all this is so that the Reminders are available on your actual device - my iphone.  The Reminders all synced immediately to the Iphone.  However, the Reminders list is an unsorted jumble on my iphone.  Even when I tap out a Reminder on my iphone itself and choose a priority, the item remains at the bottom of the list as the last thing I typed in.  Apple Express Support "explains" that the priority ranking and the sorting choices are "not supported" on the device you want to use them on - the iphone.   They offered me "an article" that explains this in detail.   In other words, engaging with the Reminder function and choosing priorities and choosing sort orders is all just a cruel joke wasting your time.  I would have been better off just printing off my Reminders list on paper and circling the high priority items in red ink.  Oh - but you can't print it out either.
    Unbelieveable.  Apple's ICal Reminder function actually and actively leads you to engage with completing details and choices that don't even function, or in other words - aren't "supported" on the Apple device they are stated to be designed for.  Is there a device on which this function is actually supported?  "Not at this time"
    The only way to have your to-do list sorted on the iphone is to assign a calendar date for each one of them and then they only appear on that specific date.  You would not be able to view your whole list in anything other than the order you happened to enter the items.  No calendar/time management system I know of makes you put a date on every item in a  task list - some tasks have a due date, but most don't.  And every calendar/time management system allows you to sort your list, or view your list in a sorted order.   And print it out also.
    Apple advertises this Icloud Ical/Reminders system as a time managment tool and fails to tell us that vital functions don't even work on your iphone.

  • Dynamically set the sequence of an Item

    Hi,
    I have three record types and am trying to dynamically set where it appears on the form.
    The 3 record types are MEETING REGISTER, MARKET PROBLEM AND BROADCAST CHANGE.
    If the user creates a record with a type of MEETING REGISTER then I want a field called 'duration' to have a sequence of 57, if it is either of the other 2 types then I want it to appear further down the form with a sequence of 241.
    I have tried creating a dummy text item called 'P2_DURATION_SEQ' at the top of the form with a default function of:
    declare
    v_dur_seq NUMBER;
    BEGIN
    IF :P2_RECORD_TYPE IN ('MEETING REGISTER')
    THEN v_dur_seq := 57;
    ELSE v_dur_seq := 241;
    END IF;
    RETURN v_dur_seq;
    END;
    and tried putting &P2_DURATION_SEQ. in the sequence field of the duration field properties with no success.
    Any advice would be great.
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hello Chris,
    If you have just the one field, or just a couple, that needs to dynamically change sequence (I wouldn't suggest the following if you have many because it could become quite a maintenance headache), you can try this:
    1) Define three "duration" fields, say P1_DURATION_MR, P1_DURATION_MP and P1_DURATION_BC. Define their sequence to display wherever each needs to be, respectively.
    2) Map all three to the same database column.
    3) Make each conditional on the record type being "MEETING REGISTER", "MARKET PROBLEM" or "BROADCAST CHANGE" respectively.
    Then, if the record type is "MEETING REGISTER", P1_DURATION will render where it needs to and the other two will not render, etc.
    Hope this helps,
    John
