Recent Mail Downloading Issue

Hey
I have a problem with my mail.
I have Yahoo Mail, and I have POP service working with it (original from yahoo) my problem is that when i set up my account it says that it is downloading my 5003 Messages, however it only gets to 4800 and then stops. .. it does not download those 203 most recent messages. When i click get new mail, i see a status bar, downloading the messages but once again they do not show up in my mailbox.
Weird,,,,, but nothing after Sept 30 shows in my inbox.
Any ideas how to solve this issue?

One thing that is a little surprising to me is that if you are POP, unless you configured your yahoo mail to keep messages on the server after downloading, then once downloaded, they should delete off the server. IF you are set up to keep mail on server, maybe you should rethink that strategy and let as much as possible download to your computer so that it clears off of the server? OR perhaps do a little housekeeping via the webmail interface first...do you really need to keep all 5003 messages?

  • Mail Download Issue

One of my IMAP email accounts is only downloading my mail from the mail server periodically. Example: I get emails for a period of time in that account. Then there might be a block of 2 or 3 hours where I get no email from that account. Then mail is downloaded fine after that period of time - but not the mail that came in during the block of time I referred to. I discovered this because I do get all the emails on iPhone and iPad. I have 3 email addresses using the problem domain account-2 IMAP and one POP. The other IMAP and the POP seem to download fine. The problem is just with the one email address. I can eventually get the withheld email by taking all accounts offline and then all back on - or shutting own and restarting Mail. I have already tried to rebuild the account. Thanks for your help.

Do a hard reset: Press and hold on the Home button and the On/Off button at the same time. Continue to hold even after you see the "Slide to Power off" screen. Hold until the Apple logo comes up.

  • Why doesn't Apple mail download Gmail messages that were sent to myself?

When I e-mail myself to my Gmail address, the message sits in the Gmail inbox but Apple
    Mail doesn't download it.
Mail downloads every other message in the Gmail inbox, but not the ones i've addressed to myself to my Gmail address.
Any ideas for why this is happening?

Gmail POP access doesn’t work like a normal POP mail server would. Here are some of its idiosyncrasies:
    1. Messages downloaded by any conventional POP mail client are marked as downloaded at the server (but not as read on the web), and no longer available to either the same or any other POP mail client.
    2. To make already downloaded messages available for POP access again, you must go to Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP page, select Enable POP for all mail, and click Save Changes, which causes everything (and I mean everything) still on the server to be downloaded again.
    3. The Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings have absolutely no effect on the messages stored on Gmail’s server. Gmail ignores any requests to delete messages from the server made by a POP client. What happens to the messages on the server after a POP client has downloaded them is determined by Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP > When messages are accessed with POP setting alone. In the case of Gmail (and only in that case), I recommend turning OFF Remove copy from server in Mail, so that Mail doesn’t even try to remove any messages from the server, regardless of whether you do actually want already downloaded messages to be removed from the server after some time or not.
    4. Messages sent using the web interface will be downloaded by your POP mail client as if they were received messages. Although this may seem weird, it's good because it allows archiving all messages locally in Mail, regardless of how they were sent — as long as you don't access the same Gmail account with more than one POP mail client, that is. You can set up a rule in Mail to automatically route those messages to the appropriate Sent mailbox (or to any other mailbox for that matter) if that's what you want.
    5. Messages sent using a POP/SMTP mail client such as Mail are also treated as if they were incoming messages for POP purposes, just as in #4. What prevents them from being downloaded is that Gmail marks them as already downloaded immediately. Since they’re on the server nonetheless, already sent messages would be downloaded together with all the other messages on the server if proceeding as described in #2.
    6. A particular case of #5 are messages sent to yourself. Instead of putting a copy of the sent message in the server’s Inbox and making it available for download, both the sent and the “received” message on the server are actually one and the same, and hence, cannot be downloaded via POP for the reason explained in #5.
    7. Gmail allows POP accounts to be set up in a special way that avoids some of these issues while introducing others. If you only need POP access to the last 30 days of mail, you may configure Mail in “recent mode”, as described in Using POP on multiple clients or mobile devices. Configuring the account this way would allow Mail to download messages marked by Gmail as already downloaded (and download messages sent to yourself in particular), but it would also cause all sent messages (not just messages sent to yourself or through webmail) to be downloaded as if they were received messages.

  • How to (successfully) change Mail Downloads folder?

    Hi,
I've been trying to wrestle with my Mail Downloads folder location without success, so I thought I would ask.
I dislike having a separate "Mail Downloads" folder because stuff accumulates endlessly there. The default Mail Downloads is at ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads. Here's what I have tried:
The obvious: change "Downloads folder" in Mail prefs. No matter what I choose, the files are still downloaded to the default folder.
I removed ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads and made it a symlink to my ~/Downloads folder (where I'd like to put everything). This causes opening attachments from Mail to hang (I have to save them first, and then open from the saved location). I get these messages in Console (in this example, trying to open an attachment named "Manual.pdf", and PID 56818 is the Mail app):
9/13/12 11:52:29.707 AM CoreServicesUIAgent[56818]: Quarantine resolution refused to pid 56809 because it is not allowed to read /Users/a10022/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads/Manual.pdf

Any thoughts? The symlink trick was working fine in Lion and before, the trouble started with the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I have spent quit some time on this and there is no decent option to do so. Mail is a buggy product since it ignores the default preferences. Old tricks with the symbolic link don't work. Most likely because Apple wants you to look at all the nice inline attachments in stead of treating them as a real attachment. Just like they do in their commercials.
I found some posts on how to move it to another disk but that was not my goal. So in the end, there was only one option left for me and that is to just make it a faourite folder in my finder so I can at least review it daily to clean it up.
Sorry for not having a desent fix but this works for me.
    Good luck!

  • OS X 10.10.1 Apple Mail reliability issue with Virgin Mail Servers

Apple Mail(8.1) reliability issue with Virgin Mail Servers on my iMac and Laptop Pro with the new Yosemite update!  Spent 1.5hrs with the virgin team (thought we solved it by changing from Auto to one minute update) only to find on return I still have an issue with Mail!  On the iMac the account opens and I see all the mail arriving. When I switch over and the back, days of recent mail have disappeared?
If I search for one I saw, It is found?
On the Laptop Pro, its similar, but it also has a problem remembering the outgoing port no matter how often I save it keeps going back to port 143 and this makes the send fail each time?
Will I have to move to another mail client or is their a fix coming?

The last version of Mail for Tiger is v2.1.3 & there won't be any updates/upgrades.
You might try the freeware mail app Thunderbird. http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/ It's newer than Mail for Tiger.

Been testing all day with no results.
The hosting company says there is no problem at there end. All mail can be found the their webMail.

Try rebuilding the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

  • Mail downloading 1 of 842 but nothing happens and there are no emails to dl

I have an IMAP server and randomly the Mail Activity bar says it is downloading 1 of (insert random number between 1 and 1000) and will do that for a few minutes, show it's "completed," and stop. There is no indication from my inbox that emails are actually coming in.
Otherwise Mail downloads like normal, as in I do receive emails when they are actually there to download, but what is the deal with the magnitude of these ghost emails?
I tried to look through the forum after trying my hand at a google search but to no avail. I wouldn't be surprised if this has something to do with the account being set up as an IMAP, but the number always changes and this thing happens at least a few times whenever Mail is open.
Also, this was an issue with 10.5.8 (and previous) as well, so SL didn't fix it as I hoped.
    Thoughts?

You should review your settings in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced regarding keeping copies of messages and their attachment for Offline Viewing. With an IMAP account only the list of messages needs to be downloaded until you click on a particular message to view and read. But with the setting to keep messages, all the messages will be downloaded and kept as a temporary copy. If you read and delete a message while Offline, for example, when you next go Online Mail will sync the copies you have on your computer with those on the server and update.
It sounds like your copies, if set to be kept, are for some reason not being retained between sessions and are reloading the cache -- but just a guess?

Hi were you able to resolve yours?
I was very worried losing all my medical stuff on my iPad Air 2, plus i have nothing to use for the next day! So i have to try all the possible things i read on the internet!! And this worked on my part (Thank God, and thank you Google)
    Perform a hard reboot
Hold down the Home button and Power button on your iPhone or iPad and keep holding them until you see the Apple logo. Once you do, you can let go. When your device boots back up, go ahead and check to see if the apps have started re-downloading. If they still appear to be stuck, continue on.

  • Can't connect to server but can hear mail downloading

Having just travelled abroad, I switched off my main mail account in Settings > Mail, Contacts and Calendars.
When I returned, I switched the account back on, expecting Mail to simply download recent mail. However, I received an error message saying that 'the server cannot be found, the username and password is incorrect...' although I can hear mail downloading in the background.
I really want to avoid deleting the account and keying in the settings again. Any help gratefully accepted!
    Many thanks,
    Colin.

    (1) *Only applications* can show the "_Open in 32-bit mode_" option.
If you are using "Get Info" on some other filetype, not seeing 32-bit is expected. However, you should still see the Get Info window.

  • Mail.app keeps saving downloads to Mail Downloads rather than ~/Downloads

I've modified Mail.app preferences to save downloads in the main downloads folder, ~/Downloads. But every time I double click an attachment, it still downloads to the wrong folder, Mail Downloads, in a terribly nested directory, ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads.
I've tried restarting Mail.app, I've tried restarting Mac OS X, to no avail. This is starting to smell like a constant's set somewhere, instead of referring to the current application preference.

When you get an email with attachments, mail automatically unpacks attachments into those funky nested folders.  If you open the attachment directly that's what it opens, because it assumes that you just want to look at the attachment, not save it.  on the other hand, if you right-click and explicitly choose download it will download a copy into the downloads folder where you expect it.

  • Attachments-Confused about mail downloads location

It seems that my attachments are located at:
    steve/library/mail/[email protected]@mail.xxx.com/INBOX.imapmbox/Attachments/<m anyindividualfolders>
They only move to steve/library/mail downloads
if I press the Quick Look button.
If I press the Save button they go to my designated downloads folder, but it takes quite a while to copy.
    Is this normal?
I have mail set to keep all msgs and their attachments for offline viewing.

That depends on how you set up your imap account preferences. In account preferences->advanced there is a scroll button "keep copies of messages for offline viewing". If you set it to "All messages and their attachments" then there will be no significant delay when you press the Save button.
Also in general preferences you can set the option "Remove unedited downloads" to "when Mail quits". This will clear the folder
homedirectory/library/mail downloads of all unedited downloads every time you quit Mail. This has no effect on the copies you downloaded using Save button.
I have mail set to keep all msgs and their attachments for offline viewing.

  • Attachments in Mail Downloads folder

I found a folder Home>Library>Mail Downloads which was loaded with about every attachment I have ever received using Mail. I was trying to figure out why. In Mail prefs, there is an option to select a folder, I have chosen Home>Downloads pretty much which is also default for my browser. The action is set to remove unedited copies when message is deleted. I'm confused because it looks like the Destination and Action are independent. When I have an attachment, if I click "Save" it populates the selected path to the "Downloads" folder. If I open that attachment, it seems to populate the Home>Library>Mail folder.
What controls the opened attachments form populating this, somewhat, obscure folder?

    Hi,
Attachments to messages are actually stored in the mailbox along with the message text. It is when an attachment must be opened with another application, such as a Word document with Word, that the attachment is also placed in the Mail Downloads folder. There it can be used and edited by the application used to open it, and from there can be returned as edited to the sender or to others.
There is no reason files must permanently stay, but if you edit or otherwise alter files that have been attached, then you must elect some place to keep them for your own use.
You will note that in the Mail Preferences/General there is also a selection regarding when to remove files from Downloads folder if not edited. Any file that is not edited need not remain in the Downloads folder since it already exists in the mailbox with the message it came attached to.
Image files, since they can be opened directly in the Mail window, by Mail, do not go into the Downloads folder, but if any were opened from the message, with say, Photoshop, then that image file would also be sent to the Downloads, temporarily.

  • Quick Look copies attachments to Mail Downloads folder!

Holy maloly, I just discovered why my MacBook Pro was slowly losing disk space! Every time I use Quick Look to check an attachment in Mail, a copy of the attachment is placed in the Mail Downloads folder of my user Library. My writing work entails quickly looking at lots of very large attachments and e-mailing estimates to clients. Quick Look has been a great time saver for this. Nice being able to stay in Mail and not have to open Word to examine the job. But I don't need all these additional copies taking up space on my hard drive. As far as I know, Mail is the only program that does this.
Is there any way of telling Quick Look to NOT make copies of Mail attachments?
    Thanks!
