Recommend any good flash books...

Hi,
I want to learn how to connect flash CS3 to databases/dynamic
information etc....Can anyone recommend any good books. I just
bought Flash and PHP Bible but don't think much of it (it keeps
referring to a companion website that doesn't exist - the book only
came out this month). I want to learn how to connect databases with
flash, get dynamic content and things like that. Have any of you
guys used such a book that you thought was great?
Cheers...
Ben.

There are a lot of good online tutorials and such. If you
really want to do
it right, learn to use AMFPHP, a remoting gateway for PHP.
It'll make your
life much easier if you do any fair amount of database work
with Flash. I
still use LoadVars for simple forms and such, but for
anything bigger I use
AMFPHP / remoting.

  • Can anybody recommend any good ejb book?

    Hi,
I am looking for good ejb books, can anybody recommend any, please?
I would like to have a good book to start with and then another book which could compliment the basics.

A lot of effort went into the on-line review of "Mastering EJB 2" by Ed Roman et. al. at www.theserverside.com. The Server Side participants constantly reviewed the book while it was being written! I think it is the best book on EJBs, but don't take my word for it: check it out. You can download the book in non-printable PDF format from www.theserverside.com under the Resources tab. You'll have to sign up (for free) to download the book.

  • Can anyone recommend any good books on leaning actionscript for flash?

Can anyone recommend any good books on leaning actionscript
    for flash?
    Intermediate level
I have been using flash for about 2 years more as a hobby
than anything else, some websites etc but now I realise I am going
to need to learn more actionscripting to do what I want, I have
come to terms with the simple stuff like goto – basic
variables – load mov – enough to programme up website
    navigation.
I ideally want to learn more about the dynamic side of flash,
mostly for designing user interfaces and websites etc
I’m after a book that doesn’t get too heavy too
fast yet I’m a little past the more basic functions
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers

  • Can anyone recommend a good instruction book for intermediate Mac users?

I have been using Mac for 3 years now so am not a total beginner, but still need help in many areas of OS X use. These forums are brilliant and thanks to the willing help from more expert members I have learnt a lot ( thank you), however there are times when just having a book open in front of you is the easiest way to get to grips with something. Can anyone recommend a good user manual for people like me who don't need a real beginners guide but also don't want a mind numbing, in depth, advanced text. I already have Maria Langers Visual Quickstart Guide which is useful but is exactly what it says, a quick start, and David Pogues Missing Manual which I find a little frustrating as he seems to fall short of explaining exactly how to do something after he says it can be done!
I guess what I am really after is a clearly written book that is good for beginners and more advanced users alike, with screen shots to show you what you should be doing.
    Grateful for any suggestions.
macbook white 2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   512mb ram and 60gig hard drive,

    Hi again,
Many thanks for the feedback and the star!
For troubleshooting, Dr Smoke's Troubleshooting Mac OS X eBook is invaluable. Again, I have the Panther edition. I haven't, yet, felt the need for the Tiger edition with so many of the tips available free via his FAQs.
The only drawback, of course, is that when one is in a fix and possibly unable to boot up, the e-book isn't accessible unless one has a copy on another Mac.
    Have fun,
    Adrian

  • Know any Good Flash Training DVD's For Sale?

Hi, I am looking to purchase some good flash training videos
for building sites and animation. I was wondering if anyone could
    recommend any.
    Thanks

It may be more practical to get a membership to lynda.com or
totaltraining.com. We have found software updates are frequent and
the membership allows us to keep up with new versions. Our old
"videos" sit on shelves and the cost of a few DVD's was alot more
than one year membership to one of these services.

  • Any good Java books with Business Examples ?

Can anyone recommend a Beginner Java book that has some good Business Examples ?
(Don't recommend the SUN tutorial, as their examples are more for the rocket scientist).

Not sure what you mean by business examples, but here goes.
Check out Wrox for some excellent books - not all excellent.
Check ot samspublishing for the same.
I have a superb book called Learning java (O'Reilly) that I would recommend to anyone. It lacks complete examples, which I usually rely on, but is a major piece of work for the novice - I have found a large part of this book on the web also, can't remember where.
My very favourite read is Wrox - J2EE Java server pages
I would stilll recomend avoiding books by Manning which are generally incomplete and point to other books they have published for this other info.
    best,
    Kev

  • Recommend a good XML book?

I am looking for a good XML book.
I found 'Building Oracle XML Applications' by Steve Muench at AMAZON, but its dated SEP 2000, and for Oracle 8i.
    I'm using 9i...will this matter?
    Suggestions please...
    Thanks
    Terry Stevens

you can still get by with it and it is worth buying although it does need upgrading to 9i.
I have managed to produce XML files from it though and applied stylesheets to them so I would recommend it.

  • Read any good Mac books?

Can someone recommend a good book on Mac use? My 90 day warranty is about to expire and I don't want to keep bothering people on the discussion forum with basic questions. For example, they just turned me on to doing p-ram resets which was very useful and assume there are many similar bits that I should know.

David Pogue's Mac OS X: The Missing Manual is a treasure trove, you should definitely read that one.

David Pogue has a good series of "Missing Manuals". Here's a link to one.

  • Another newbie question (sorry)---Please recommend a good training book?

    And where to order?
    Thanks.

All these books are great - and I've read them all and done the exercises. But I have to put in my 2 cents and recommend Larry Jordan's book and web site. The book is well written and understandable. His web site is full of great tips, and his free monthly e-mail newsletter is great. Now, he has a new newsletter called Edit Well published in conjunction with Peachpit Press.
Details on all this at: http://www.larryjordan.biz/
Good Luck! And welcome to Final Cut!

  • Can Anyone Recommend Any Good Tutorials For A Beginner?

    Hi,
I just purchased Pro Logic 9 and was wondering if anyone knows of any good lessons/tutorials to help a first time user of the Pro Logic series. Im excited to get into this program and record but it is so powerful that it is a bit overwhelming. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    I agree with JG99.
    +1 macprovideo
I've seen both the lynda and macprovideo logic training. Don't get me wrong the Logic training at lynda is ok for the basics. The macprovideo ones are excellent and go much further. So I could learn in depth how all the instruments, like the EXS24 sampler, Ultrabeat drum machine, synths and plugins work and how to use them. There are proper whole tutorials dedicated to mixing and mastering. For me and my studio buddies macprovideo for final cut, logic and now the photoshop titles has saved us countless hours and a lot of hair!

The macprovideo iPad and iPhone apps rock too!

  • Does anybody know of a good flash book?

Hello, I'm very new to flash, and wanted to know if any of
you knew of a good tutorial/referance book for FLASH CS4 that I
could use to help teach myself flash.
    Thanks!

    Mumasatus,
    > Hello, I'm very new to flash, and wanted to know if any
    of you
    > knew of a good tutorial/referance book that I could use

    > teach myself flash.
Flash is one of the most versatile tools I know. You can use
    Flash for
everything from TV cartoons (no programming at all), to
    custom slideshows,
banners, and other Web eye candy (perhaps some programming),
    to games, music
players, video players, and applications (potentially heavy
    programming).
This means you can focus on quite a variety of disciplines,
    so for
anyone to recommend a book, it will probably help to hear
    more about the
projects you're interested in pursuing. There are books
    specifically on
animation (cartoon or otherwise), on illustration, on making
    applications,
on demoing (faking) applications, on programming in general,
    and even on
extending the capabilities of the authoring tool.
    If you're interested in a good general-purpose reference --
    something to
give you a broad sense of the basics -- I'll go ahead and
    mention the
friends of ED title I just co-authored with my buddy Tom
    Green (not *that*
Tom Green, the other one). It's called "Foundation Flash CS4
    for
Designers," and this new edition is nearly 700 pages. We
    cover the work
space, the various drawing tools, text, audio, video, two
    chapters on
animation, CSS, XML, the UI components, and more.
    http://www.FoundationFlashCS4.com/
    There's also a CS3 version, if you're using CS3:
    http://www.FoundationFlashCS3.com/
Both of those websites link to the publisher, where you can
    read sample
chapters, and Amazon.com sells both for around $25 apiece,
    which is pretty
cheap. There aren't any reviews yet for the CS4 edition, but
    the reviews
for our CS3 book are generally really good.

  • Can anyone recommend a good J2ME book?

    Hi folks
I'm on the look out for a good book on J2ME. I'd like to know what books you guys have bought and which ones you think is worth buying. I'm considerig purchasing Wireless Java Programming with J2ME by Yu Feng and Dr Jun Zhu. Is this a good book on J2ME or are there better ones? Thanks for your advice.

    Hi
Thanks for the good advice guys. It looks like Jonathan Knudsen's "Wireless Java: Developing with J2ME" is one of the best books around. I'll probably buy that one or this one that seems to be quite good. The book is called "J2ME In A Nutshell" by Kim Topley:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/059600253X/qid=1064919774/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_3_1/202-0023835-2590247
What do you guys think about this book?

  • Any good Toplink books

For example hibernate has "Hibernate in Action", similarly do we have
    anything for Toplink?

Most of our efforts have been on the product and its associated documentation.
The Pro EJB 3: Java Persistence API book was authored by an architect and developer on our team. We have a preview chapter available.
I am involved in some book efforts. Once there are public I will make sure these are announced here.
