Record action for "Fit to artwork bounds"?

Hi,
since there is no short cut for the very usefull (but hidden) function of fitting the page to the artwork bounds I tried to record the steps with an action.
I create a new action and selected page setup in the menu and shrinkt to bounds of the page by selection the second option (Fit to artwork bounds) from the toolbar menu on the top.
But nothing happened - not a single step of this process was recordes by the action.
How can I create an action for this?
Is there another way to create a shortcut for this very useful feature?
Thanks
Konrad
P.S: I use Illustrator CS4

Since FitArtboard to Artwork bound and Fit artboard to Selected, are available under object->Artboard menu , you can definately Create a customized shortcut for this functionality and use them
to create a customized keyboard shortcut do this:
Edit->keyboard shortcuts->choose menu commands->object->Artboard-> double click on the " Fit to Artwork Bounds"  in the line of shortcut column and provide a custom shortcut.
Thanks

  • Problems with Fit to Artwork Bounds when using Save for Web

When I do the Fit to Artwork Bounds function under Artboard Options and then Save for Web, the file has a line of white (or nearly white) pixels at the top. As a workaround, I then open the png file in Photoshop, crop out the white line of pixels and resize the image, but that shouldn't be necessary. How do I prevent it from making the white line of pixels at the top?
I'm using Illustrator CC on Mac OS 10.7.5.

you can make your art go a little bit over the bounds. or you can make sure your artboart and art edges align to pixels

  • Artboard Action/Script Crop to Artwork Bounds

I have just finished manually cropping the artboard to fit the artwork bounds for 1500 files.
It is not possible to create an action or keyboard shortcut for artboard options. It is not even possible to set and save another default artboard size.
AI CS4 ships with sample scripts to add artboards, but I understand that it is not currently possible to write a script to modify the properties of a file's existing artboard.
There are several messages on the Illustrator forums requesting help to create an action to crop the artboard to the artwork, so this must be a reasonably common problem.

    Does this help anyone?:
You can automatically create a new Artboard to fit precisely around any object by 1. Selecting the object, 2. Selecting the Artboard Tool, and then 3. Clicking on the object with the Artboard Tool. A new artboard will appear which wraps tightly around your object. Your old artboard will still be there, but you can zap it right away since the Artboard Tool is still active, or you can just note the Artboard number for when you go to export.
It's not a perfect solution, but nothing ever is with Adobe Illustrator.
When I used Corel Draw I could simply select anything and export it and the result would be cropped to the object.
    Sigh.

  • Recording Action for Swatch Pattern creation

    Hi !
I'd like to record an action in Illustrator CS6 for adding a swatch pattern but I have a problem for specifying options.
Here is what I do :
Open a document containing (for instance) a rectangle filled with what will become my new swatch pattern.
Go in Window > Actions. Add new action, name it and start record.
    Select All
In Action window menu, select "Insert menu Item"
Go to Object > Pattern > Make
This is all fine at that point. The swatch is created and I can find it in the swatches window. The problem is I'd like to record a change in the "Pattern Options" window (changing default Copies from 5x5 to 1x1).
I can't record this last action.
Would anybody have an idea on how to do this ? If it's not possible via actions, is it possible via js scripting ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jim

Intrestingly enough when I record the Action in CC the Action looks like this:
Then I quit Illustrator CC and launch again and the Action no longer works. Here is what the Action looks like in the Actions Panel after quiting Illustrator and launching it again:
The Select All Unused goes away. Curiouser and curiouser.

  • Using "Fit Artboard to Artwork Bounds" in an action?

    Hey all,
I'm using a handy action that does some what I call "clean up" on various open files, nothing fancy - names all the used swatches and deletes unused etc - but I'm having trouble getting it to do another major part of my workflow:
Let me explain - I want to have an action that is able to do the following:
    1. Unlock All objects
    2. Select All objects
    3. Artboard Tool (SHIFT-O) - and then
    4. Fit Artboard to Artwork Bounds
I got it to work up to step 3. It can Unlock and Select, but it seems that recording an action while using the Artboard (Shift-O) tool won't record. Is there any way to automate this? Or does one have to use the Artboard tool manually each time? Thanks!
    CS4, Mac

Same problem in CS6: neither "Fit to artwork bounds" nor "Fit to selected art" will record for me (although strangely, "Fit to selected art" recorded on the first attempt but never worked again, even after restarting).
Seems to be one of these temperamental flakey things that sometimes conks out. I imagine trashing preferences would fix it, but it's not worth it since the workaround works (albeit clunkily):
Flyout menu in the the Actions palette
    "Insert menu item"
From the top menu, choose Objects > Artboads > Fit to Artwork Bounds
Even this seems to be a bit temperamental, though. Sometimes it seems to not actually size the artboard down properly, and sometimes it seems to give different results for running the same action on the same file. Something that seems to work more reliably is the following in your action:
    Fit to Artwork Bounds
    Select all
    Fit to selected artwork
In theory that's just duplication, but it seems to work more reliably than just one or the other .

  • Can't Find "fit to artwork" in CC artboard panel

In CS6, you could select the artwork, then go the the Artboard Panel, choose options, and then choose "fit to selected artwork" or "fit to artwork bounds." This resized the artboard to fit your artwork. In Illustrator CC, both options are absent in the Artboard Panel and "Custom" isn't there either. I can't find these options anywhere else. Help files assume they are there.  I am reopening files in CS6 to do this now. Can't believe they eliminated this feature. I use it everyday. Where did it go?

But you're right, they should be there as well.
    They appear for me....

  • Actions for All users - Detection Problem

I have created some action in illustrator and copied in the Presets\Actions folder. But it is not detecting for all users. Is there any way make the recorded action to be detected for all users?
Version: Illustrator CS2 and CS3 Windows XP SP2
The same way I did for photoshop is detecting recorded actions for all users after copying to default action folder.
    Thanks,
    Selvakumar

Check the permissions on the files themselves. They certainly do not inherit the properties of the folder and thus are not readable by all users. "System" and "Everyone" should possibly have full access in that case.

  • Help with creating an action - anto fit an image in a specific pixel size

I am trying to create an action that takes the image in question and fits it with a specific pixel dimension. Some of the images are more horizontal in orientaion (like a school bus) and some are more on the vertical end (Like a tall building) They all need to be fit within a canvas size of 260 px x 196px. They need to keep the images original aspect ratio. Is there a way to do this with a single action, or do I need to create an action for vertical oriented images and one for horizontal orientated images?
    I hope that makes sense.
    Thanks,
    Dean

Photoshop also ships with a plugin to do that. In CS5 Adobe added an option to it to not resize images if they fit.  If you do not use that option small images will be resize up in size like the image processor script.  There was a bug in that option I do not know if Adobe fixed that bug yet they may have.  If not it easy to fix if you know a little javascript. The plug-in was changed from a compiled plug-in in CS2 and earlier to a Photoshop Script in CS3 when Adpbe added plugin support into the Photoshop Scripting feature. The plugin has built in action support so you can use it in an action. When the Action is played back no dialog will be displayed the values use while recording the action were recorded into the action step by the plugin and will be used unless you make the action interactive by turning on the steps dialog. The image processor script is not a plug-in so it can not be automated.
The plugin is menu File>Automate>Fit Image.......

  • Automate an action for tall and wide web images

Can you automate an action to make a web image a certain size whether it's wide or tall? If it's a wide image and I want it 850 pixels isn't a problem but, if it's a tall image and it makes it 850 pixels wide the image gets huge. I need an action to check to see if it's height is bigger than it's width and if so make the height 642 pixels and the auto fill the width and if the image is wider than it is tall, make the width 850 pixels and auto fill the height. I have over 20,000 images I need to convert over for our new web site so if I can automate this it would be a big relief.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Use the image processor script (under File > Scripts). You'll also need to create a new action which makes the canvas 850 by 850 (with the anchor in the middle) -- choosing your desired canvas extension color. Then just run the image processor script resizing to fit 850 and 850, and be sure to call your newly recorded action to fill out the canvas.
On re-reading your post it looks like you just need to run the image processor script (if you're not looking to fill out the canvases to have images all 850 x 850).

  • Record actions bug. does not execute the dont save action even though it acknowledges in action list

i am using macbook pro running Lion
so i am trying to save a series of actions that i want applied to a batch of images. i do all the actions correctly (i've done this before in earlier version of photoshop). stop recording my actions, and open the same image to make sure the automation process works properly and i get the same image through automation that i got when building my actions. one
of the actions is cutting and pasting a portion of the image in a different location, yet during the automation it always ends up somewhere else, and not in the same place, which makes no sense. another issue is during the recording of my actions i close out of all the files b4 i stop recording and click dont save. so this should be automated, but when i run the automation it prompts me to click dont save which it shouldnt do. i cant sit at the cpu and click dont save for thousands of images. whts the point of automation if i have to actually do something. stupid program. and i can clearly see in the list of actions tht it recorded me clicking dont save yet it still prompts me every time. i really do hate cs6. i wld install my old photoshop but b/c i have lion it doesnt support it... of course.. *rolls eyes*

@conroy - one of the actions means one task in an action (see screen shot).
@noel - i am able to run my action properly when i "play selection", but when i try to run a batch of images through the "automate" function is when the issues begin to arise. at least most of the issues.
i would insert an image to show what i did, but i cant seem to get that to work (on my pc or mac... weird).  i loaded it to my fbook page and u can view it by following the below link
    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=750482081505&l=4d1bb044bd
you can view an image of what i did here.
so in detail what i am trying to do is:
record an action of the edits i make to a raw image so i can then run that same action on a batch of thousands of images via "automate."  the specific tasks i am trying to complete during my action should be visble in the link i provided. to explain in detail what is occuring that is being recorded as an action:
    1)- i press begin record
    2)- I am open a raw image
3)- there is a time stamp in the image and i select and copy the time stamp from the corner of the image
4)- i then open a new document and past the time stamp into the new document
5)- i then increase the size of the pasted time stamp by about 3x by changing the resolution
6)- i then go back to original image
7)- i crop the original image to exclude the time stamp and other superflous things on the edges of the image
8)- i then rotate the original image 90 degrees CCW
9)- i then go back to the new document w/ the time stamp and select the time stamp with the marquee tool, so I can copy the time stamp to the original image
10)- i copy and paste the time stamp to the original image, i use the "move tool" and move the time stamp to the top of the original image.
11)- i then flatten the original image (i thought when this was done this is essentially combining layers, so there should be no possibility of the edited time stamp moving around as it has been flattened onto the original image)
12)- i then save the original image (that was flattened w/ the edited time stamp) as a .jpeg  As part of the save process i also select the resolution.
    ***issue***
so i am now having an issue on this section as well.  as you can see in the link i provided i have told adobe to do all this, yet now at this section it prompts me to make a decision about the resolution (i.e. press "ok").
    13) -after this step i then select "close all" from the file menu which closes the original image that i just saved and prompts me if i want to save the new document i created for the time stamp i edited
    14) - i select "dont save"
    15) -i press stop record
    16) - i then go to the folder where i saved the file i just edited in photoshop and change the name.
    17) - i start the action process to see if i can replicate the manual actions i just completed through automation.  i have no issues replicating this when i manually start the action, except for my issue w/ the time stamp detailed below.
    ***issue*****
when i do this the time stamp that i edited and pasted back into the image is not in the same place. i have only gotten it to be in the same place once, and the only thing i did differently was continually re-create the above action in the same manner.  each time i recreated the action the time stamp was in a different place and one time it was finally in the place i moved it to.
    18) - after checking that the action works, i then attempt to automate a batch of files
    19) - i select file -> automate -> batch
    20) - in batch i choose the folder with the original raw images that i now want to run the action on and also select the folder where to place the altered images
    21) - in the batch menu i do not have any of the boxes checked (i.e. suppress color profile warnings, etc.)
    22) - i select "ok" and the automation process starts
this is where i run into issues.  originally i would get prompted @ step 14 (above) instead of the automation process just reading the task in the action that says select "dont save". somehow i do not get prompted there anymore. now i get prompted at step 12.  it saves its as jpeg, but instead of completing the save process, at the resolution screen it prompts me to select "ok" instead of reading the task in the action that says select "ok"
i have created new actions for the images i collect since CS4 and CS5 and i have never run into any of the issues i have described above. i appreciate any and all help you can provide, as it currently stands i am pretty upset b/c i have wasted an entire day or productivity messing w/ what appears to be a buggy program.

  • Is there a voice recording app for ipad that shares directly via iMessage (not just email) - like voice memos does on iphone?

Does any-one perhaps know whether there's a voice recording app for ipad that shares directly via iMessage (not just email) - like voice memo does on iphone?

You can't do anything in the background of iOS. Apps are still one at a time (with a few exceptions like Music), and suspend when the app is closed. It's also against the App Store guidelines to sell apps that would allow such actions.
Though, maybe you could get your Voice Memos saved to MP3's, which can play in the background of other apps.

  • Creating an action for a template

Hi, I'm in the middle of creating an action for a template I've created but have hit a couple of snags.   The template I have created has a few blank layers that I wish to fill with different images by importing them and clipping them to the blank layer.   My issues: 1) When I run the action I need to specifiy a folder and file location which gets stored in the action - when viewing that particular action will show up the full path of where to find that file - I do not want this. I would like the action to present to 'open' window to me to allow me to select a file of my choosing without having a predefined folder to go to...  2) When opening an image it will open on its own project window. When I select the image and copy + paste it into my template it requires me to select the template project. This action will insert a 'selection 2' action step when recording. Playing this back will cause a failure as it cannot find the project for an unknown reason. Is there a way of specifiying the project window name I wish to go to during recording?  I hope that is clear enough to understand. Hope someone has some solution for me.  Thanks, MJ

You may want to look at my Phtoshop package "Photo Collage Toolkit"  It has four rules to follow when creating templates and some Photoshop Scripts.  Scripting is much more powerful then actions.  In the package there is a scripts to test templates your developing,  A script to build a template, a script to populate a template with you images, a script to interactivly populate a template with your images, a script to batch populate a template with your images and a script to batch populate a single image template with your images.

  • How to create a single action for adding a border and signature for portrait AND landscape images???

i would love to be able to create a single photoshop action for adding a border, plus a signature in the bottom right corner, that works for both portrait and landscape images.
    need i say more?!
i already have an action that adds a signature in the centre of the border at the bottom of the image e.g. the image below. what i want though is for that signature to be on the RHS and for the same action to work for portrait images as well.
supplementary info: reason for this is that I want to be able to export 300 wedding images (mix of landscape and portrait images) from lightroom in my pre-selected order (meaning the files are labelled from 001 to 300, ordered according to how the wedding day unfolded) and then use PS to add the border and the signature, in the same place, and for it to work for both orientations.
i need this to work for full sized exported jpeg images, i.e. i want the files that i give on CD to my clients to include my signature in this manner. so I don't want to copy the initial layer and then reduce the second layer size to leave a border around the second layer.
i hope i've been clear and that someone can help me here. I think that this sort of presentation makes such a difference to final printed image, and I DONT want to have to go to all 300 images picking out the landscape from portrait ones (although this may be what I have to do and wouldn't really take that long but surely there's a better way!!!!).
    Thanks in advance photoshoppers ...

It is actually quite easy to do if you have a good understanding of how Photoshop works.  To be able to handle any size Landscape and Portrait you need to scale the document to a known width or height.  Once the document is resized to the width or height it easy.  When yot resize the document you use Image size with resample NOT checked.  Not a single image pixels is changed all the happens is the documents DPI is set to the proper DPI resolution to print that size.  This lets you add a border sized for and document.  You can use Canvas Size check relative and  leatve the anchor point centered and set width and height to 2" this will add 1"on all sides. Use Canvas size a second time move the anchor point to the top center check relative and set height 1" the will add an additional 1" border on the bottom.  You then record a text layer with your Name title or what ever to the top left of the image. Select all ant the align the text layer to the selection to move it to the bottom right.
Adding a couple of scripts to the action you can make sure there is a background layer so the added canvas will be filled with pixels.  You can restore the document to its original DPI resolution to retain the images print size. Down load my crafting actions package it contains a dozen scripts to be used within actions. There are text file with tips and guidelines additionaly there is one on dealing with document size and includes a sample action set with a watermarking action the can watermark and size image. The Action set is also saved as a text file with additional comments I added my downloads can be found here http://mouseprints.net/Photoshop.html

  • MGE - issues with pers. actions for delegation in ECC6.0 - management of global employees

    Hi experts,
during implementation of MGE at my client we are facing issues with the personnel actions for delegation.
We were using the standard actions as follows, without success.
action Expatriation planning (81), IG 92 via PA40 --> new persno. has been created successfully, empl. status has been set to withdrawn, IT715 "host" has been set to "planned", IT710 has been filled (required fields only, no admin, no manager, no sending pers. assignment info), all payroll relevant ITs have been skipped (706 + 707)
IT715 has been set to "to be activated" via PA30
running of report RPMGE_Activation for newly created persno.(assignment nr), pers. action 82 Activation in host country, IG GE --> following ISSUES occure:
Action can not be executed via PA40 (is this normal behaviour?)
when running with report, employm. status changed to active
IT715 "host" has not been changed updated in status (should have been updated to "in progress", right?)
IT715 "home" has not been created (correct?)
    IT710 has not changed
    Background information:
    > Switch MAINS is activated
    > We are not going to use global payroll! No switch has been activated. Payroll will always run in home country, so the client does not want to use any of the py relevant ITs dealing with global employment.
    Many thanks + best wishes,
    Evelyn

    Hi experts,
    short update on our issue:
After several times of trying the same thing, the report worked out fine as it should for 82 and also in the next step for 83. IT715 is going to be updated correctly. We need to work with the report and not with PA40.
    Some open questions remain:
    - Set home assignment to active during delegation (not to inactive for payroll reasons in home country)
    Documentation for RPMGE_Activation says
    Home Activation (Active) (84)
Same process as described above, excpet that in the third step, the Employment Status field in infotype Action (0000) is set to Active if there are any trailing payments in the home country.
We understand that 84 is identical to 83 but employment status is different.
For action 84 a different IG is underlying (93) than for 83 (GE) and also it is called "Change expat.planning". The Action does not seem to work with the report as well.
    >> Is this correct? Do we need to create our own Home Activation (Active) Action by coping 83, changing the employment status setting?
How do we need to configure Feature ACTCE then? EXPATACTHOME would need to have 2 entires at the end, no?
    - End of delegation
Which actions are used for end of delegation? Are there standard once that we could not find?
We would like to set the host country to withdrawn and the home country back to active (also change of employee group in this case).
Also using the logic of IT715, is there any automatic way of changing the host country record to status completed, or would we use an exit action, including IT715 and set status manually?
    Same question for home country.
    Many Thanks,
    Evelyn
