Recording to a vcr

I have a toshiba sd 392 combo vcr/dvd player on the tv WITHOUT the multi-room dvr and I can't record any progams to the vcr.
Should I be able to record one show while watching another? I have the vcr/dvd player set to channel 3 and i can program my selection and the vcr shows that it's recording but when I playback there is no picture. HELP PLEASE

Thankyou for the info. I do have the multi-room dvr but some times it's never enough you know. Would a seperate dvr recorder
work without intrferring with verizons dvr? Thanks again.
No, you would still have the same issue. The only device that can record one thing and watch another is a DVR.
All DVD-recorders and VCR's will only be able to record the program that you are watching.
Now if you want seperate recorders, your choices are...
Another DVR from Verizon
Or a 3rd party DVR (like TIVO or Moxie) plus a cable card from Verizon
Or a cable card from Verizon plus a Computer capture device such as the Ceton (to convert a computer to a DVR)
Those are about your only options.
Otherwise any DVD or VCR you get will have to be connected between the STB and TV and then you can record the program you are watching.

HOW DO I RECORD A DVD FROM A VCR? I BOUGHT A APPLE MINI-DVI TO VIDEO ADAPTER AND A S CABLE ADAPTER, IT ALL HOOKS UP, BUT IT DOESN'T SHOW UP AS BEING THERE. HELP! ANYBODY! I WOULD LIKE TO DUB MY CHILDS MOVIES OF WHEN SHE WAS YOUNG BEFORE THEY ROT AWAY ON VCR TAPE. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
    imac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   just received

    FYI.
I recently purchased the EyeTV 200 (Firewire).
A refurb direct from Elgato for $200.

Yeah, I got the "200" because I'm transferring 300 training sessions from VHS to DVD. I use the RCA inputs (three wire plug type - white & red (sound) and yellow (video)). EyeTV200 does a fine job.
I also use our Canon GL2 to pass the video through the camera via firewire into my Intel iMac. I find EyeTV 200 easier (and I can watch and record TV!) while at work! (WaaHOO!)
This is for the analog signal. TEh EyeTV 500 is for
    digital cable.
Didn't know that. Saw the "500" but thought it was for HDTV only. Thanks for the info.
Comes with EyeTV software which allows you to view a
TV guide (titantv.com) and click what you want to
    record.
True! You can even schedule it to record like a VCR. I set it up to record "Amazing Race" before leaving work because the program comes on late and I wanted to see it. Got to work and there it was!
Has S-Video as well as Composite video and stereo
    audio inputs.
So true. I also have a VCR with S-Video and it works just dandy with EyeTV 200.
I'm in the process of putting my videos onto DVD with
    it.
Let's you save directly as MPEG 1, 2, or 4.
Also exports to DV, iPod, H.264, DIVX, HD720, HD1080.
    etc.
Between this and iDVD and iMovie HD, it's some pretty
    wicked stuff.
Ain't it so! Two happy EyeTV users playing on their Macs!

Looking at the ElGato web site and the pictures of the unit I would say no.
Now, if the goal is to only capture your old videos I would suggest getting the older Elgato EyeTV Hybrid. This unit has the older composit (Red, White, Yellow) imputs as well as a S-video.
I have this and used it to transfer older VHS tapes and it worked very well with an antenna to get off the air broadcasts.
This older unit may be harder to find but it works like a charm.

  • Recording on my VCR

I can view a taped program from my VCR to my TV, but can not record a program coming in from the FIOS box. I've hooked up the FIOS box to the VCR and then the VCR to the TV, but I can't record a program. How do I record a program with my VCR? Hope someone has the answer.

There are 2 or 3 ways to record from the STB. Some STB's have an RF output that can be connected to the VCR, and you can then record on Channel 3 or 4.  Not all STB's have RF output however.
All STB's have composite Video, and S-Video video available. You can connect either to an Aux input on your VCR. The Audio then has to be provided by inserting a y-cable into the Left and Right Audio Channels if you aren't using HDMI to your TV. This then allows you to send audio to both the TV and VCR at the same time. The Left and Right audio then need to be connected to the same Aux input you are using on the VCR for video input..
Note that on some VCR's, you must specifically activate the S-VHS input, the default Aux input is composite video.
S-Video will provide the highest quality picture, and RF the lowest.

  • Recording from my VCR or TV onto my mac??

    hello!
i'm a brand new mac user - just bought a macbook pro and LOVE it! i'm officially converted. :0)
so here's my question: i have a lot of stuff on my tivo that i would like to get on to my computer as well as old VHS tapes that i would like to get on my computer but i have no clue how to go about doing it. i know my boss uses some simple cable to connect her VCR to her PC and presses record on some program that came on her PC and presto it's all on the computer - plain and simple. (although i do think i notice a little loss of quality...) but anyhow, i was wondering how i would go about getting all that tivo and VHS stuff on to my mac? a simple way preferably because while i am pretty computer savvy, that was with my PC and like i said i'm new to mac, so... be gentle!
thanks so much in advance! any and all help is appreciated! :0)

    .. so, use his set-up
    if this is no option:
    a) VHS is analogue. has to be 'digitized' before usage in ANY computer (=not just a cable, for sure, you boss' machine has some digitizer inside...) . on this board, many recommendations avail, Canopus $$$ or an eyeTV Hybrid stick $$, which is not only an analogue>>digital device, but a TVreceiver/recorder too ... and cheaper than Canopus ..
do NOT buy those cheapo BestBuy-9.99-usb-stick-thingies! does not work on Mac ..
    b) I'm not familiar with Tivo (US market only..) but I'm pretty sure, it stores internally some .mts (=mpeg transport streams). no idea, how you tell a Tivo to 'share' such recordings, but if you manage to get those .mts to your Mac, you have to convert them, 'cause mts isn't meant for editing.
    you'll find on my website
    https://sites.google.com/site/karstenschluter/mts-to-mov
a few suggestions, how to convert mts into something editable ..

  • Recording from old vcr

I have a panasonic vcr and want to transfer video tapes onto dvd . Is the best way of doing this by scart from vcr to dvd recorder or is it better to transfer onto my apple imac G5 and then burn onto the dvd. I would prefer to use the G5 route as I think this is more flexible in adding titles etc. if this is recommended can anyone suggest the best piece of kit on the market (not too expensive please!!) in the UK that is is compatible with os x.4.
    thanks

Mac OX 10.4.2 using imovie 4.0.2
I too use Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge connecting my VCR-computer. However, since updating to Quicktime 7 I have not been able to import any video. I did notice that in my preferences I have it set to open new projects in NTSC , but when I switch from the editing to import it switches from NTSC to PAL.
Have you ever had this problem? Any recommended fixs?

  • Recording from vcr

My 17 in G4 powerbook has svideo which allows me to watch movies on my tv. Question is, is this svideo conection in and out? I'd like to use it to record from my VCR to digitize some of my older vhs footage.
    Peter

I've converted VHS movies into a digital format. The easiest way to to that is to get an analog to digital converter box. I have an older version of http://desktop.grassvalley.com/products/ADVC55/index.php which works just fine with my Powerbook. They also make additional models with more features. If you have a video camera that allows an RCA input with a Firewire output, I'd guess that would also work.
The easiest way to do it is to use the iMovie application, then use iDvd to create a DVD. If you get into it, you may find some limitations in iMovie and iDvd, in which case Final Cut Express would be a good step up.

  • Recording to vcr

Hope you all can help me out
I have the Motorola qip2500-3 receiver from Verizon fios. I am trying to record to my vcr. Does anybody know how I can achieve this task
    thanks for your time
    glen

I just returned my 2500 box, but I had it connected to both the TV and a VCR. How you do it depends upon the available inputs to the TV and VCR however. I ran the s-VHS output from the 2500 box to the TV, and used a Y cable for the audio, so the Right and Left Audio was connected via AV cables to both the VCR and the TV. I ran an AV cable from the composite output on the 2500 box to the VCR, and then recorded from the Aux input on the VCR. The other choice is to run coax from the output of the 2500 box into the VCR, and have the VCR tune to channel 3 or 4...
However the picture quality will be better if you use either composite video or s-VHS output from the set top box.

  • Need Help Recording Programs from my DVR to my VCR

Can someone please tell to reocrd a program from DVR to my VCR without getting  all snow
    Here is my set up
    TV- Sony
    VCR/DVD- Sony  SLV-D300P
    DVR- QIP7200

How many threads do you need for the same question?  This was asked HERE and answered, but you seem incapable of taking the instructions given successfully.
Yellow from DVR Video Out to VCR Video In
White from DVR Audio Left Out to VCR Audio Left In
Red from DVR Audio Out  Right to VCR Audio Right In
The inset color of the RCA jacks (color inside the silver ring) matches the cables.
Set VCR to LINE INPUT, play the DVR recording and record on the VCR.  If that is too difficult then get Geek Squad or someone who understands how to connect components.  The connections are also shown in the DVR manual.
I have been using this exact set of connections for 2 years and it works fine.

  • VCR/Camcorder Viewing & Recording on Qosmio G20

Hooked up my video camcorder via S Video In. Tried reading the instructions on how to view and record from the VCR/Camcorder info. Windows Media Center is being used.
Is there some configuration I need to follow or is this not a way to do this?

    Hi Greg
I have made some experience with camcorder because I have one. If you want to send movie to HDD your camcorder must be recognized like a new external device and like source for video signal. Usually for this will be used fire wire port and not S-VHS port. If you use S-VHS port external device will not be recognized and there is no way to send video signal to any software that you use for video recording.
The best way to check this is to use Windows movie maker. I use at home Pinnacle software for video recording.

  • Toshiba DVR620 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo

Hi! I have a new Toshiba DVR620 recorder to transfer old family VHS tapes to the DVD format.  I am able to record to the DVD ---HOWEVER, the dvd recording displays erratic flashes of sudden brightening of the picture throughout the dvd recording. You can see it on the TV monitor as it is recording. It is too annoying to keep as a video or send copies to the rest of my family. The flashes of brightening occur then it returns to normal light exposure till the next one ---It can occur 3x in a couple of seconds or 1x in 10 seconds. You can still see the video picture. It is like the picture overexposes for split seconds at a time. I took thhe exact tape that did this to the photo center at our CVS Pharmacy and it turned out perfect---no problem at all. I have tried changing the rca cables---it did not help. The TV I monitor it on is a Lg 47 in. flatscreen. This is MY THIRD machine and ALL THREE MACHINES---do exactly the same thing!   CAN"T figure this out! The other two machines were FUNAI very similar to the Toshiba I bought now---I returned both of them.    I use DVD-R DVD Verbatim X8 blanks.  I have tried Taiyo-Yuden JVC DVD -R X8 blank dvd's---same identical problem.  I do have the recorder sitting on top of my old analog TV and 2 old VCRs and a Blu-Ray player. However I do not have these on during operation of the DVD recorder. I note that initially it will display L1---not sure what this is---but like I said I have no problem recording.  The VCR side works perfect---plays the tape exactly like it is no light brigtening flashes at all. I just can't figure this out. I have spoken to Funai and Toshiba support--they don't have any suggestions. I really need to be able to record my own DVD's due to the high expense of sending them to some else to transfer----Anyone have any IDEAS??? electrical intereference  or what?  maybe I should try my old JVC VCR and buy a stand alone DVD recorder---don't know if that would make a difference.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Some clarifications for you...
You'll press REC MODE on the remote multiple times to choose the speed to record (XP, SP, LP, EP, SLP). Be sure INPUT SELECT is pressed so that you see either L1 or L2 (but not L3). Then you will press DVD DUBBING to begin the VCR->DVD dubbing. Yes, you can then leave the DVR620 on its own (and turn off the TV or change to a different input on the TV). DVD recording will stop when the VCR encounters blank tape or no picture for 3 minutes, or when the tape runs out. And also, if you run out of recording space on the DVD.
You can finalize when you come back after the recording is done. Note that if you want to make multiple dubbings onto the same DVD, you don't finalize until after the last recording is made. Once you finalize a DVD+R or DVD-R disc, you can't record on it any more. (You can reformat DVD+RW and DVD-RW and reuse them).

  • HELP ME PLEASE!! Recording to VCR

I need help. WHile I know that VCRs ar just about obsolete, I have a project that I completed on my computer and then downloaded to my IPOD. The project has to be handed in on a VHS cassette, UGH! I got the video to play on my TV, but I can not get it recorded to my VCR, is there someone out there smart enought to explain this to me. I would truly appreciate it!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you

I have not tried this, but perhaps connecting the RCA jacks (red, yellow & white) from your iPod to your VCR's input jack ports will do the trick. Since you can play the output on a non-digital TV, it seems possible that this might work.
    Good luck!

  • How do I use my HDV camera to capture VCR video into Premiere Elements?

Hello all, I am trying to put VHS video into my computer. I have read that my Canon HV30 can act as an interface between my VCR and my computer. I am supposed to connect my VCR to my HV30 and my HV30 to the computer through firewire. My question is this, how do I connect my VCR to my HV30? Which port on my HV30 is a video input? It has a yellow connection named "AV/(headphones logo)", and one called "component" that looks like a mini firewire port. It also has a red connection named "mic". The other connections are the typical firewire port and such, so it cant be those.? Thanks

I'm not sure if your camcorder can work as a pass-through between your VHS and computer. Fewer and fewer camcorders have this feature.
Is your camcorder able to record input from another video source? That's kind of the test. If you camcorder can record from your VCR then it can likely also serve as a pass-through.
But, sadly, this is one of the features that camcorder manufacturers have stopped including with their cams.

  • Trying to transfer from a VCR...

I have a vcr hooked up through ElGato eye TV 250 and have recorded clips to my harddrive. According to iMovie, it can accept any format. well, guess what...it doesn't. A quicktime error comes up...the error is as follows...
The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Users/Documents/EyeTV Archive/Live Recording - 4/3/07 12_58 AM.eyetv” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -43
This doesn't look like being able to accept any format to me. The tutroial, from what i've seen, doesn't address recording from a VCR.
If anyone can help. it would be greatly appreciated. I have a ton of video to edit and create.
    Thank you.

    any format.. huh..? no:
iM is a DV-editor, meant to import lossless from firewire connected miniDV devices, by using the same codec, 'dv'...
due to the underlying Quicktime engine, iM 'swallows' some other (audio, video, still) codecs.. but not 'any'... the QT error -43 let us guess, it is somekind of mpeg...
the suffix of your file, you're trying to import, 'xxx.eyetv', is telling us, it is a proprietary format of your converter device..
I'm not familiar with these products, afaik, they come with some software, which allow an 'export'... if that export allows diff. formats, choose 'dv-stream'... if 'mpeg(2)' is the only option, you need to convert that with additional software (mp2 plugin (Apple, 19$)+ Mpeg Steamclip (free, www.suqared5.com) ...

  • Record settings -TV@nywhere master

I am trying to bring some of my home videos into my PC from VHS on s-video.  I tried recording them in at "best" but every 6 seconds or so, there is a little glitch.  Usually the video kind of holds or hangs before continuing on.  I do not notice anything with the sound.  I tried increasing the bit rate, but found that only caused the glitches to occur more frequently.
What has anyone done to be successful at recording from a VCR?

Sadly I do not have a solution for your particular problem, but I am also having problems recording from VHS to the PC.  My problem is that I can only get a black and white image, whereas I can get a colour image from the TV setup.  The recording holds and indeed I have managed to record for over 70 minutes with no problem.  Black and White films are fine!!  Are you managing to record in colour?  I am using a VCR with a scart adaptor and S-Video and audio leads.  I wonder if the fault is with the S-Video lead?
Any advice from anyone very welcome?
