Red Epic and Premiere CS6 workflow issues

Hello!
I'm looking for some advice or insight regarding working with RED footage in CS6.
In the past, I've worked with native RED footage on CS5.5 with no hiccups whatsoever. I'm not sure if it's CS6 or my computer's processing power, but RED footage has become uneditable for me.
After I updated to Yosemite, I began experiencing problems with being unable to import RED Epic footage due to "unsupported or corrupt files," and when I tried to fix the problem with the Adobe Labs plugins, it reported a "generic importer failure."
I then uninstalled and re-downloaded CS6, and now I can get footage into my project, but I can get no playback at all! Both the source and program monitors remain frozen on a frame and then have the yellow "Media Pending" screen. When I attempt to render a clip in my timeline (RED HD 4K 23.58 sequence) I get an "error compiling movie" box. I've tried other sequence settings, but still no dice.
I have my source monitor playback set to 1/2 resolution and my program monitor set to 1/4 resolution. Still nothing.
Here are my computer specs:
MacPro 2010
OS X 10.10.1
2 x 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon Processor
32GB Memory
ATI Radeon HD 5870 GPU
Blackmagic Intensity Pro (Desktop Video 10.2.3)
I know that I can process the footage in REDCINE-X Pro (which will take a million hours), but I have a major project that is all shot with RED Epic footage and I was counting on Premiere's ability to edit natively, since I'm kind of on a tight schedule.
Am I looking at some hardware upgrades? If anyone has any advice, I'd really appreciate it!

Hi Hannah,
I see you posted on Creative Cow too: CreativeCOW
Update to the most recent version of CS6.
Make sure your GPU has more than 768 VRAM.
Try a previously installed version of OS X.
Thanks,
Kevin

  • Adobe After Effects CS6 and Premiere CS6 wont work on OS lion

I just bought a teacher Edition of Adobe Production Premium. I installed the softwares on my Mac which is running OS Lion 10.8.2. Everything works except Adobe After Effects CS6 and Adobe Premiere CS6. It always start up with the splash page then a pop up window opens that reads unexpected error occured send to apple.
I don't understand because Photoshop, illustrator and the other softwares worked fine.
I have tried uninstalling, re-installing, re-starting and even tried to download the After Effects CS6 and Premiere CS6 on creative cloud thinking that maybe those on the web will be more updated to address the issue.
But still I cant get it to work.
    Please help.

  • Final Cut Pro X to Premiere CS6 workflow destroys FCP X events

    Hello,
I just got a call by a customer who tried to convert and FCP X project via XML to Premiere CS6 for a further AfterEffects workflow. He experienced the following problem, which I can rebuild completely. These are the steps:
1 - Export an FCP X project which relinks to transcoded optimized media to XML
2 - Convert the XML (.fcpxml) with Xto7 app to legacy XML (.xml) format
3 - Open Premiere CS6 and import the XML (.xml)
4 - Close Premiere CS6 and open FCP X and the exported project
FCP X warns immediately that something has been modiefied. This is just an information which I can only accept. All the clips that were optimized are reded out and marked "Modified File". Now do the follwing:
5 - Try to relink the modified media and chose the optimized media file in the transcoded media folder
As soon as you accept the relink FCP X deletes the file in the event library and ALSO in the Original Media folder AND in the Transcoded Media folder and moves both files to the trash. This could be destructiv, if you are working on a SAN storage, like an EditShare system.
But even if you are able to restore the files and move them back in place, there seems to be no chance to relink the files in FCP X to make your project working again. As soon the relink comand is executed the files will be moved to the trash again. If I do not try to relink, the files keep marked red and as Modified Media. If you have a look in the metadata, you will see, that they have been modified by Premiere, which seems to cause the trouble.
Does anyone has a workaround or working handover to AfterEffects? Or does anyone else encounter similar problems with XML or third party apps destroying metadata within FCP X files?
    Appreciate all solutions!
Btw: This only affects transcoded media. Every time I worked with original media only, the handover to Premiere works undestructive, but the media was pending in Premiere until the app crashs.

Finally I solved the problem by myself, doing a deeper web research.
Actually it's Premiere CS6 or AfterEffects which adds some metadata to the clips, that causes FCP X to ignore those files and shows them as "Modified media". But - and that's the good thing - you can turn off this behaviour in AfterEffects or Premiere. Here is how:
    In AfterEffects
go to Preferences > Media & Disk Cache and uncheck the boxes refering to the XMP metadata
    In Premiere
go to Preferences > Media and uncheck the box "Write XMP ID to Files on Import"
Those XMP metadata help CS6 to share media cache files and previews and may improve stability and performance but if you are in a more FCP X based workflow, deactivating this option may prevent from loosing media.
A fast check with the same procedure discribed above went well and everything stays untouched and online in FCP X.

  • 2013 Mac Pro, 10.9.3/4 and Premiere Pro - GPU Issues

    Hello All
Since the introduction of Mavericks 10.9.3 and subsequently in 10.9.4, Apple Mac Pro (Late 2013 model) users have been affected with issues relating to video editing applications such as Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Da Vinci Resolve.  It appears that since these updates the compatibility with the AMD D500 or D700 GPUs is broken and causing significant workflow problems.
Some of these problems include (particularly that I have experienced):
White lines appearing on the video in the program window during playback and encoding
Green and Pink lines appearing as mentioned above
Other odd image artefacts during playback
Poor performance when playing any clips with GPU accelerated effects or parameters
Struggling to playback footage at full resolution (not 4K just HD material which shouldn't be a problem)
Freezing and crashing of the application
Slow loading of media and saving of projects
Consequently, this is significantly affecting my workflow and I know I am not the only video editor suffering these issues.  I have spoken to Adobe who are aware of the issue and say they are working with their partners to find a resolution.  I assume and hope that one of those partners is yourselves and implore you to please elevate this issue to a more serious status as it really is becoming highly frustrating and starting to effect my business.
I'd be interested to hear from other users that are experiencing these issues and hopefully together encourage Apple and Adobe to get their heads together and fix what is broken and fix it ASAP.  It isn't good enough that for a machine this pricey we are left out on a limb without an urgent fix being presented.
I hope we see a fix for this soon but failing that please make 10.9.2 available so we can at least roll back and become productive again.

  • AVCHD AND PREMIERE CS6

After over 12 years as an Avid editor (now on MC 6.5) I decided to switch to Adobe Premiere CS6 because I have a music documentary to edit with over 300 hours of material shot on AVCHD.  Avid still hasn't conquered the AVCHD problem (although it's getting better) and I thought Adobe had.  I've spent a lot of money making this switch only to discover that Premiere plays back slow and has lots of problems with AVCHD. When is Adobe going to fix this?  I'm scared my only solution is to sale my wonderful MacPro (16 gig, NVIDIA 4000 card) and use Sony Vegas which doesn't have any problems with AVCHD. If the Adobe fix is only days away, I can wait. If not, I've really got to go to Sony.

The "we don't have a timeline yet" answer isn't going to hold water much longer.  I understand software development isn't easy, but you've known about this since around the time CS6 was released and there hasn't been any visible movement on it yet.
Figure this out quickly, please.  I'm not going to buy CS6.5 when it's released unless this is fixed before that.

  • InCopy CS6 and InDesign CS6 workflow

Hi there, I just started a 3 day per week job at an architecture firm. They have about 35 staff, and use Word to format some pretty hefty reports. They are in one column, rather ugly and doesn’t reflect at all the professionalism of the firm.
I’m looking at trying to integrate the workflow, so that they can maybe use InCopy and InDesign together, effectively replacing Word for report use. I’m only in 3 days so it’s impossible for me to use a Word > InDesign workflow with the amount of changes (mostly last minute and to tight deadlines). It just takes too long. The architects and historians need to be able to write these reports themselves, with my skills coming in when it's the final format ready to send to the client.
We have licences for about 5 copies of InDesign CS5 at the moment, and 35 licenses for Word, so we’re looking at the costings and if the InCopy to InDesign workflow would work well for much of the communication here. The report writers use hundreds of images/diagrams in each document, and all these have captions, so I guess it’s important to use an inline compatible design where the users can add images in InCopy and these are brought over to InDesign without too much fiddling around at the end.
The aim is to have the report writers use a collaborative system, but using corporate open type fonts that display well on screen. We are using Trade Gothic, and it doesn't represent on screen very well at all. The report writers hate using it, especially as their zoom size in Word is normally around 90%.. The other problem is the lack of layout optiions with Word. The reports could save hundreds of pages just by using a 2 column system which can save rivers of blank white space within text.
Also we need the ability for the writers to be able to add images and resize/rotate landscape portait format etc.
I’ve downloaded a trial version of InDesign CS6 and InCopy CS6 so am just checking things out and testing it at the moment.

Using Dropbox for InCopy/InDesign workflows works really well. You keep all your projects in Dropbox as though it was a networked, local server.
I will be doing an hour-long session at PePcon (the Print + ePublishing Conference) on "The state of the state" of open source or low cost editorial workflows, covering InCopy, Word, GoogleDocs, and InDesign plug-ins. Really great conference to go to if you're using InDesign for publishing. (note: I'm a co-host, too.)

  • Red Rocket and Premiere Pro CS6

So what I want to know is what exactly does the Red Rocket add to Premiere Pro CS6? I have one installed in my Mac Pro and have found similiar performance with it off and on in terms of playback and rendering. I found this post from Adobe employee Will Renczes in another thread:
To the OP:  I think you need to unravel the complexity.  You should also be able to get 4K RED files playing back @ 1/4 res without a Rocket - the only thing the Rocket brings to the table is realtime debayering @ full res.  There's plenty of people editing 4K footage on macbooks @ 1/4 res...
Is that really the only advantage to this $5000 card in Premiere? I won't see any increase in performance unless the playback resolution is set to full? I just tried a test and my computer definately lags playing it back in full res without the RR, but it still stutters a bit even with the RR activated. I guess I wish it helped the playback at lower resolutions, as well as during the export process.
Do any other Adobe CS6 apps make use of it better (Speedgrade perhaps)? If this card really isn't doing all that much, might just try to sell it. Darn you Adobe for being able to edit RED footage without a crazy expensive card!
    -sam

Look at the preview resolution for your Red Timeline in Adobe. If you want to play 4K and 5K out to a monitoring solution able to handle that via Redcine-X then the Red Rocket is the way to go right now. If your transcoding red files constantly via Redcine-X then it also speeds that up. This is the case atleast till you start seeing HDMi 1.4 monitors that support 4K res.

  • Avid MXF and premiere CS6

    Hello,
I wish you can give me a little assistance.
My archive is made by OMF files and MXF files created with Avid Express Pro and Media composer 5.5.
I know that MXF file from Avid are made of 2 different clips for audio and video so can the new CS6 version of Premiere import such files without recoding them?
That's because I want to digitize the rest of my videotapes in one format to share with different NLE including premiere.
    Thank you for helping

  • JavaScript and PS CS6: Performance issue

    Hi folks
I have to admit we are stuck in our development: We have written a Phothoshop Plugin unsing extensive JavaScript and Flash Panels / Action Script.
The Javascripts would, eg. select a given layer. When running the Javascript in PS CS5 or 5.1 everything is smooth and snappy but we've noticed, that the same JavaScript running in PS CS6 takes up to 300% more time.
Does anyone having observed the same performance issues?
Would it be faster to address the specific layers by their native Layer ID's rather than their names?
Why is there such a performance slow down with the same JavaScripts / ActionScript-FlashPanel between CS5 and CS6?
We have already contacted [email protected] (we are solution partner silver) but they do not start acting if you are using your own JavaScripts....
You are our last hope :-(
I can send you some of the code but I don't want it to be publicly exposed here.
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrash

Hi, since nobody bothers to answer we might have to find out ourselfs.
Maybe it is caused by the way we address layers throug the script?
    Which method are you using?
Are you addressing the layers directly or are you just cicling throug an array of layers?
Are you pointing for the layers by their native ID or rather their layer names?
How do you trigger the script: by another script? From a flash panel (Flex / Action Script)?
We are using Flash Panels to start the script. The script simply calls a layer by it's name (a numerical ID that we apply to the layer). The script shall look up that specific layer and check if there is some content on the layer. We created a logger to see where the heavy amount of time is consumed and it seems, that it is while jumping to the layer.
In CS5 that was all a matter of a split second. Now in CS6 it takes a couple of seconds (4sec.). We asked ADOBE Techsupport for help, but they didn't even bother to look at the problem since we are working with self written code (as every developer does.....?!?!). I wonder what techsupport is good for if not answering techical problems like this one.
I hope that, with your answers we might circle in the cause of the problem!
    Cheers,
    Andreas

  • Training and Event Management - WorkFlow Issue

    Hi,
Can anyone clarify, if we copy the Active Workflow and make any changes to the copied workflow does it effect the Active workflow in any way?
We copied the active workflow which was working fine for another scenario and made changes to the copied version. Now the issue is the active workflow is giving error and not moving from one step/task to the next step/task. As one of the contributor suggested, we changed the attribute of the operation task as general task and it is moving to the next step, which is notification mail task and from here it is not moving futher.
Any help or suggestion is greately appreciated.
    Regards

    Hi,
If you have copied only the workflow template (object type WS) all changes you do to standard tasks (object type TS) inside the workflow will affect the original workflow template. So make sure that if you do change to standard task inside the workflow you make a copy also of that.

  • InDesign CS5 and inCopy CS6 workflow problem

I've looked at other discussions and haven't found any to answer the question to our problem.
We are a small publishing company and we have license for roughly 7 inDesign CS5 copies that we purchased a year ago.  We contract with outside editors to edit content for us using inCopy.  For a year there hasn't been any problems.  But any new contracted editor we now sign, which in turn purchases inCopy, we are having trouble with our files talking to one another.  Any new contracted editors are only able to purchase CS6 inCopy.  This leaves us with the problem of having inDesign CS5 on about 7 or so of our employees machines and 6-8 CS 5.5 InCopy on outside contracted editors and an additional 3-4 contracted editors with CS6 inCopy.  When the editors with CS6 inCopy try to open files from our InDesign CS5, either they won’t open at all, or they will open, the editor works on the project for awhile, their program crashes and they are not able to recover (re-open) the files again.  Which results in hours of lost work.
Has anyone else come across this problem?  Is there a work around or a quick fix.  We would hate to have to upgrade to CS6 for all of our in house copies of InDesign and then ask our outside editors what do have inCopy cs5.5 to upgrade to CS6.
If this is the case, when CS7 comes out, and we hire additional outside editors, will we continuously have to go through the process of upgrades again?  This is too costly for use and our existing contracted editors.
Any thoughts are assistance would be appreciated.
This is one of the error messages received from an outside contracted editor using inCopy CS6.  The file crashed after several hours of work, when the editor went to reopen the file, they received this error.  Which looks to be a generic error code that doesn't tell us anything.

    Hi Ruffus,
Unfortunately different versions of InDesign and InCopy do not work well with each other. Newer versions of the program should be able to open older files, but they cannot save backwards. I am not sure what is causing the errors with the newer versions of InCopy however.
Are you able to open the CS6 InCopy files on your computers?

  • AE and Premiere CS6 Mobile Editor GTX 570M vs Quadro 5100M

Here's my question folks.  Looking to get a "desktop replacement" laptop.  ASUS makes thier G75VW ROG Laptop which comes with a GTX 670M video card.  Any system with a Quadro card such as a 5100M is $2-3k more than this unit.
Is the GTX 670M good enough for moderate PP and AE work on the go or do i have to break down and get a quadro machine?  Any difference between the 670M and 660M cards?

  • Red Dragon Premiere CS6 (can't import.. gulp!)

    Hello,
When trying to import Red Dragon footage into Premiere Pro CS6 I get the following message: "Unsupported format or damaged file."
    The footage is:
    Type: REDcode 7:1
    Resolution: 3840 x 2160
Tried importing older footage from Red Epic and it works perfectly.  The Red Dragon footage works perfectly in Red Cine-X Pro also so I know it's a Premiere issue.
From what I've been reading there is no support for Dragon footage in CS6 but I'm hoping that is not true and that there is an update I can install or some viable workaround.
I really hope someone can help with this issue, I would be eternally grateful for a solution.
    Please let me know.
    Thanks.

I know that RED Dragon 6K requires accelerated debayering which has been added to Premiere Pro CC 2014 Release and I have ran successful tests of the .r3d's and not only do they import no problem, they play back in near realtime even on an old slow machine and via the Source Settings option you have access to debayering and color space adjustments, similar to those in RedCine.  As for import support for CS6 I do not believe that any official support exists, however as you say older epic r3d's you have found to work and Dragon files are also r3d format, just larger and with more metadata.  However, since camera origination type is key metadata to set the proper debayering and colorspace, it is very likely that CS6 does not recognize the header data and therefore is initiating the error as it doesn't know how to handle it and therefore sees it as unsupported.  My recommendation would be to download the free trial version of Premiere Pro CC2014 and chances are it imports with no problems confirming that indeed it is incompatibility with CS6.  Also this way you will gain many performance enhancements and other features to support working with Ultra Hi-Res+ media and across Prelude, Premiere, After FX, SpeedGrade & Media Encoder.  As for a workaround to use Dragon footage in CS6, you can always use RedCine to Transcode the media out to another format that is natively supported by CS6.

  • Mac Pro 2013 and Premiere Pro - The performance issue that Adobe don't want us talking about!

In May 2014 I bought a 2013 Mac Pro to help my business with the ever increasing demands video editing was placing on our systems.  I was so excited to see how the 12GB of power the AMD D700s would affect my workflow and ability to edit footage seamlessly without delays to the creative process.
However, to my dismay pretty much since starting to work with the system I found that there was an issue with the GPUs, Mac OS and Adobe’s applications.  It was first reported by many other users in early 2014 and as yet know one from Adobe has really commented officially on the issue.
Sadly it appears to still be present today and speaking with an Adobe rep confirmed this.  Trouble is no one is doing anything about it.  My hope is that, if you have watched this video and are experiencing the same issues then please let’s get the comments going, share and like the video and let’s get Adobe, Apple and AMD to pick up this with immediate haste! Thank you.
Below is a video of the problem I have been experiencing.  It's a little long but I wanted to give a good account of the problem we are seeing so that someone can help! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE help!
Mac Pro 2013 and Premiere Pro GPU Issue - YouTube
Thank you for your time and I'd love someone to help!

Thanks for responding!  It's such a pain and I have been chatting to one of Adobe's senior consultants about this and still none the wiser.  I have sent my machine off to the retailer as it was still under warranty.  Nothing wrong with GPU apparently which is a relief although I kinda wish it had been that as it would have been an easier fix.  Adobe told me that working with H.264 is totally possible but if you have a complex sequence with multicam and nested video with effects applied then it will seriously hinder performance.  Sadly transcoding to ProRes doesn't seem to help either and they suggested not adding any effects to the nested clips, flattening out the multi cams etc and this has improved things a bit.  Sent a sequence to SpeedGrade the other day though and the machine had a fit.  FCPX though seems to be working great and has a few advantages over Premiere so I may be making a switch for this type of work until Adobe can sort out this issue.  I still feel that the application isn't fully making the most of the GPUs.  In fact, I found out that multicam is actually all still on the CPU and that they are trying to implement GPU handling of multicam soon.
