Reimaging issue with Disk Utility on Intel mac

My department recently acquire 2 intel iMacs (24")
I have a bootable PPC firewire drive on which I keep .dmgs of each machines for redo/updates. With the new machines I partitioned out a firewire drive to GUID and made it a bootable intel OS disk. I am able to create a backup of the first iMac I have configured but unable to use this image to restore the 2nd iMac's hard drive.
I have tried both manually erasing and unmounting the drive but I continually get a Restore Error: Could not open connection to helper tool.
Any ideas?

So you created an image of one iMac onto the FWHD and can't restore it to the second iMac. If you're booting with the second iMac, then you cannot restore the image to a booted volume. You need a separate bootable volume to do that. Easiest thing to do is first restore the configured iMac's HD to the FWHD, then creatte the image. Now you should be able to boot the second iMac with the FWHD, mount the image, and restore it. Or, dispense with the image and just restore the FWHD to the second one.

Serious issues with Disk Utility

I deleted a 40gb partition from the install disk, but it disappeared. My original startup disk didn't get any space added to it. My hard drive says 149.1 gb, but if you add up all the partitions on it it has one 89.28 gb partition, one 2.46 gb partition, one 2.00 gb partition, and a 10.00 gb partition. That adds up to 103.74 gb, no where near 149.1 gb. It also has 4.63 gb of unusable free space that it refuses to let me merge with my original disk. It can only be merged with my 2.00 gb partition. I cant make original disk bigger, either. If I try to resize another partition it goes to the free space or any partition except the original. Earlier, when I deleted partitions, it went to the free space, too. The 40 gb one just disappeared. Anyone help? Please?

when you delete a partition the space that it was taking is not automatically added to another partition. you can use disk utility to drag the lower end of the partition directly ABOVE the free space to absorb it. if there is nothing above the empty space, it can not be absorbed into another partition. also, i believe that to increase the size of the startup partition this way you have to boot from the install DVD and use disk utility there.

Problems with Disk Utility & Mounting DMG!! Help!!

Hey guys, im a fairly inexperienced mac user anyways I recently bought a IBOOK G3 with Tiger 10.4 and i'm having major issues with Disk Utility and installing applications.
The issues with D.I are that it loads up then I get the error message "Disk Utlity started but a background process needed in Disk Utility didn't start properly. Please quit and restart Disk Utility. And when I do restart it, i get the same error over and over.
Also my second problem is whenever I try to and install DMG files I get the error: "Broken Pipe" and sometimes "Device Not Configured"
I've tried searching for resolutions for each problem but they both involve the other functioning! I'm really at a loss, i've tried using programs like pacifist to reinstall my original files etc and they haven't seemed to help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you xxx

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...

Can Time Capsule hard drive be accessed with Disk Utility? I'm having issues...

How does one mount , inspect , verify , and possibly repair a Time Capsule hard drive with Disk Utility ?
My 500Gb 1st gen Time Capsule ( used wireless with Airport) has quit backing up new data . ( iMac Core2Duo, Snow Leopard) . TC says it needs 238 Gb of available space, but only has 35 Gb available. So it quit doing new incremental backup altogether. It's almost like it wants to start over.
Airport connection seems good. Time Capsule seems healthy enough ( for being 3.5 years old) . I really dont want to lose the data on the existing backup.
What is the nature of this glitch ?

I'm sorry , LaP , but " Time Capsule become too full " is not the cause of my problem .
In fact, I just got done pruning the iMac system hard drive a little to free up some 10 Gb of new space , yet created only maybe 1-2 Gb of new data to archive. The TC had been doing regular daily backups without issue and Time Machine was showing me stuff from about ten days back.
The TC informed me it needed 235 Gb of space but only had 34 Gb available. That 235 Gb needed is totally in error. My problem more resembles corrupt hard disk directories . Maybe Permissions ? which is why I asked about using Disk Utility.
Yes, I do need a newer larger TC, but pigs don't fly and money does not grow on trees to make tha happen. The backup I have now is fine and should work if I need to restore anything in the forseeable. New data will not be archived, alas.

Can't get rid of Windows on my Mac even with disk utility

I noticed this disk0r3 or something like that, and I know this is Windows.
I have a bit of a bug issuea nd the windows wasn't done very well. I wanted to erease it with disk utility, but it said it couldn't. What should I do?
I've tried the zero, 15, and 35 or whatever they offered.

Did you use Apple's Boot Camp utility to create a hard drive partition for Windows?
If so, do you want to erase the partition created for Windows or eliminate the 2nd partition and go back to a single hard drive partition?
If the latter, you have no choice but to reformat the hard drive first which erases the hard drive and then re-install OS X and all software.

Open your Applications folder then open the Utilities folder. It should be there.
If not, click the magnifying glass icon top right corner of your screen. That's Spotlight.
Type: Disk Utility

Burning .iso with Disk Utility (Mac)?

Anyone doing this? I read it can be done but I just tried and it didn't work.
It's been a long 72 hours or so trying different ways to get my 82-minute 3D feature to various bluray permutaions (i.e. side by side, red-cyan, and of course, 2D) (saving the MVC multiplexing for another day).
Anyway, I was hoping I could just make an .iso image in Encore and then burn multiple copies with Disk Utility. Some sources say it can be done, but it didn't work on my 10.8 iMac. Thanks, all!

I don't recall for sure about "disk utility" and DVD and/or Bluray. It seems to me that Toast is usually used.

Mac-formatted external HD only access with Disk Utility

Hello!
I read a lot about problems with Mavericks and WD harddrives. But i did not found anything about my problem:
- bought a new HD and formatted with Disk Utility
- copied all important data to it, all fine
- next day for my surprise i couldn´t see this HD in Finder
- looked in Disk Utility and the HD is there
- if i click on the drive and "open" then i can see it in finder and have access to all data, but if i click on "reveal in finder" i can´t see it!
- i started CarbonCopyCloner and did a complete backup to a new second backup HD, CCC recognized the HD and everything worked fine
- now the backup HD has the same problem, i can see it only in Disk Utility
- it seems that the error moved from one drive to the other, so my guess is it has nothing to do with brands or a hardware failure
- i´m searching now for hours but i don´t find a solution
- i now have one (very important) data HD and a backup HD as a clone with the same problem
- all other HD´s i have are showing correctly in finder!
Does anyone have any ideas?

Partitioning with disk utility

hi there.. i wonder, can i partition my primary hard drive with disk utility live? (i mean not from the leopard dvd on boot) i want to create a new partition that would be less than the amount of free space i have, while running leopard (my mac os shouldn't be damaged i think), is that possible? and safe? thanx

If you have an Intel Mac, the answer is yes. Intel Macs must have internal drives that use the GUID Partition Map, and these can be dynamically partitioned and re-sized under Leopard's Disk Utility.
It is relatively safe, but it is an action that modifies the drive at a low level. In other words, one would be foolish to attempt a re-partitioning or re-size without a good and current backup on hand. Provided you have such a backup, there's no reason not to create your partition.

Ya, but you are talking about some systems files, I think.
Actually I am talking about any file. I'd hate to discover too late that that I'd copied over a corrupt data file, erased my drive, and had ruined my chances of perhaps repairing it and getting a good copy.
If he/she can backup needed files, reformat, install new system, update, and then copy needed files back. This to me, takes less time, and you got a nice clean new system.
Yes, you have a new system, but if DW works it will take a lot less time than what you're talking about doing, especially since you have to be at the computer doing it all! Install new system, then all the updates, then all the software again, with all their updates, then put all the preference files, etc. back?
I have DW, and I bought it in hopes to recover one file, waste of money, think its version 4 dot something

Music Server Can't See External Drive Formatted for WIN with Disk Utility.

Is there any reason an external drive formatted for WIN (MS-DOS(FAT)/FAT32 or NTFS w/ NTFS-3G/MacFUSE) with Disk Utility would not work for intended purpose? I have a music server (Bryston BDP-1) that uses an attached USB drive for storage/playback of music and can only read FAT32 or NTFS formatted drives. I've tried both and neither is readable by the BDP-1, yet I have no problem reading/writing to the supplied 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32), as well as another 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32). Get Info shows; "FAT32" for all drives formatted as such.
Note: From what I'm told the BDP-1 uses a scaled down version of Linux for it's OS. Isn't that UNIX? Shouldn't it be compatible (Read/Write) with other platforms (i.e, Mac)? Bryston says the reason they use it because it's Open-Source. Does Linux only work FAT32 or NTFS?
I do have Fusion/XP, also access to WIN PC's, but I just hate to use it when I shouldn't have to. It makes no sense why the drive can't be read by the BDP-1 when formatted for WIN under OS X.
And there was one other issue, after the third try to format fro WIN the external drive suddenly began making faint clicking sounds instead of a spinning drive sound only when plugged into BDP-1 USB port. But it works fine when connected to iMac FW.

I can no longer repair permissions with Disk Utility, v. 13

After installing iTunes update 11.1, I can no longer repair permissions with Disk Utility, v. 13. When I attempt to repair Disk Permissions, there appear dozens of items showing that "Permissions differ on "Applications/iTunes.app....", then it says that it has been repaired. However, when I do a second or third repair immediately afterwards, I see the same thing again.

Creating a mp3 disk image with disk utility

Hi,
I'd like to create a mp3 disk image with disk utility. In the end I would like to have a mp3 disk that plays in various stero system and macs.
But I want to add some additional files: a png file for a nice folder background of the dmg, a special image for the dmg, and some text files relating to the mp3s.
Is this possible at all? Is there something I have to observe creating the dmg?

You need to know which file systems your "various stereo systems" understand. The default file system created on a diskimage when burning is a hybrid file system- HFS+, ISO-9660 with Rock Ridge, and Joliet with Rock Ridge.

Slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro

I am having a similar slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro, but I don't have bloated prproj file size.
Here is what I am working with:
Mac Pro intel quad core 2.8ghz
OSX 10.6.7 Snow Leopard
6Gigs RAM
3TB storage between 4 drives, each drive with about 50% free space
I am editing a 10 minute HD video from avchd files. The edited video is very heavy in photoshop files with a variety of different fx including green screen. The system has slowed down to almost a standstill. Anytime I move the playcurser, or try to do any action, it displays the spinning top "thinking" icon and takes 15 seconds to several minutes to unfreeze. I am often forced to force quit and I have gotten unexpected quits several times. The program also freezes on startup frequently.
No other programs are running. When I export with media encoder, it took about 4 hours to complete. The last 4 or so photoshop images I added seemed to tip the program over the edge. It had been slowing down some, but those last few really dropped the processing speed. Before those additions, export took 30 min to 1hr.
I did delete the render files (did not check if the file size was bloated beforehand, oops) but it has not significantly affected my performance.

Do you need all of those extra pixels in the stills? Are you panning the full 4976?
Two things to consider are that if you using, say a 1920 x 1080 Sequence Frame Size, you can only see that at any time, regardless of how large the images are in pixels. If there are extra pixels, i.e. the Pan is not using all 4976 pxls., I would Scale to just what you need in PS, prior to Import.
If you are doing any Scale in PrPro, its Scaling algorithms are not as efficient, as those in PS. [Note: CS5 and 5.5 are a major improvement on that statement.]
With many large stills (the max for CS4 is 4096 x 4096, if there ARE extra pixels, pushing those around will use up resources, and quickly. As a test, some years back, I was working on a "photo wall," and was using 4000 x 4000 images. The workstation had no issues with slowness, until I got to the 5th large still. By the 8th, the Project was too slow to edit. I had to wait for everything. Luckily, I have AE, and it handles large stills much more efficiently, and much differently, than PrPro. I just moved to an AE Comp, and completed the Project, finishing up n PrPro, after I Exported from AE.
Just something to think about. With Scaling in PrPro, this is one time, where bigger is not necessarily better.

So I may have messed up with disk utility.

So I was messing around with disk utility and was partitioning out some of my hard drive. I then accidently quit disk utility part of the way through. So now, part of it's partitioned out, but it wont show up. And since I can't find it, I can't get rid of it.
