Reinstall 10.3.9 without losing apps?

Hello,
I've had a PowerBook G4 for several years. Back in '05 I bought and installed Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD and used it ALOT. Then in '07 I bought a new Mac Pro desktop, and upgraded the Final Cut Pro to Final Cut Studio, which required me to send back the FCP 4.5 discs to Apple for the upgrade. Now I have an issue where I ended up with QuickTime 7.xx on the G4, which is incompatible with FCP 4.5. Also, Final Cut Studio is not backward compatible with the PowerBook, so I am stuck with a non-operational FCP 4.5 on the PowerBook. I'd like to just keep using my PowerBook and FCP 4.5, but I have to reinstall the OS to get Quicktime back to 6.5 or so, but I don't have the application discs to reinstall FCP because I had to send them back to Apple for the upgrade.
SO, here's the questions... will reinstalling the OS require me to reinstall FCP 4.5?
AND, is there a way I can get FCP 4.5 install discs back from Apple? I have all the recipts and registered serial numbers, as I am a legit customer.
Thanks!
- Kevin

Here's what I suggest:
• Backup/clone your entire internal HDD to an external firewire HDD using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Although you will choose to preserve in the next step, there is always a possibility that something will not go as expected.
• Reinstall OS from disk using the Archive and Install option. This will preserve your data in a Previous Systems folder, and your your settings and preferences, if you choose to preserve them. It will also preserve third party applications that are in the Applications Folder. See steo-by-step directions at end of post.
• Check new installation to see if everything is in place. If not you can restore from the Previous Systems folder (see How to get files from a Previous Volume after Archive and Install) or from your backup.
• Remember to Repair Disk Permissions before and after installaton.
• I suggest you call Apple Customer Relations about the disks.
Install Panther OS X 10.3.9 using Archive and Install option
• Boot from the 10.3.x install CD 1
• Go to Installer Menu and open Disk Utility
• (Optional)Go to File menu and Repair OS 9 Permissions!
• Quit Disk Utility.
• Launch Installer
• Select Destination disk for installation
• Click Options
• Select Installation Option Archive and Install
• (Optional) Preserve Users and Network Settings
• Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
• Check box to install BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
• Install Mac OS X 10.3.x
• Restart and Repair permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
• Download and apply the 10.3.9 Combo Update
• Restart and Repair Disk Permissions as previously!
• Run Software Update and apply all updates available
• Repair Disk Permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
Please do post back with further questions and comments.
Cheers

I sync my iphone with my office computer, but what I really would like to do is syncing only the calendars (because my secretary uses them to set up new apppointments), but syncing all the rest on my home computer. Is it possible without losing apps or music?

    Although not recommended, yes.
Disable automatic syncing when the iPhone is connected with iTunes on each computer.
The only item you will have selected for syncing with iTunes on your computer at work will be Calendars, which is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. Nothing else will be selected under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes on your computer at work. You will get a warning message that your iPhone is associated with another iTunes library on a different computer which you can ignore when syncing calendars/calendar events only with iTunes on your computer at work.

  • How to sinc iphotos without losing apps on ipad

How do I sinc iphoto photos on Ipad2 without losing apps on Ipad2?

When you connect your iPad to your computer and iTunes opens it should be syncing any apps from iPad that are not in iTunes, or giving you a message stating otherwise.
    You can also re-download apps.

  • I want to move from pc to mac without losing app data

i have a new mac mini that has itunes and some music/tv shows/movies on it.  but i want to move my main itunes library from my pc to my new mac mini.  i know i can just copy my itunes folder from my pc to the mac, but i want to move my iphone data from pc to mac without losing app data (especially game data).  can I just copy my pc iphone backup data files to the mac and have them work in mac format?  or can i just plug in my iphone on the new mac, do a backup/restore and continue syncing from there?  does anyone have any advice on the best way to move iphone from pc to mac?

I was fighting this battle the past few days myself; but actually it is REALLY easy now. See here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/146958/2010/03/moveitunes_windowsmac.html
Then, once iTunes was on the Mac, I did this:
    1. On the Mac rename ...\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl as ...\iTunes\iTunes Library
    2. On the Mac delete ...\iTunes\iTunes Library Genius.itdb (Apparently the PC & Mac versions are not compatible - iTunes will just rebuild it later)
    3. Launch iTunes and immediately press & hold down the Option key until a dialog opens asking you to Choose a library. Navigate to the folder/drive you've copied from the PC and open ...\iTunes\iTunes Library.
(thanks to turingtest2 for the above steps)
That was it. Did it yesterday evening. All playlists, libraries, everything copied fine. No problems; no broken links. Perfect.

can I swap apple id for a device without losing apps already on it from current apple id?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I'm not entirely sure if this is what you are asking, however you cannot use another account without losing the ability to update the apps that you have bought under another account.

I have 2 Apple IDs.  1 associated with all the family's devices and the other with no devices associated with it.  Is there a way to split out the devices between the 2 IDs without losing Apps (iPhone 4s) or music (iPod classic)?

i'd be inclined to leave things as they are. Managing app updates over more than one account in the same library or device requires you to sign in and out of each account in turn. You cannot transfer content from one account to another.

  • ? Brand New phone, same iTunes: How to transfer without losing apps/music

In preparation for a new device, is it possible to transfer all your apps, music, bookmarks from iTunes to your new device without losing your apps/music, etc?  If so, how?  What are the steps involved?  For example, if you have an iPod Touch and want to "clone" the iPod Touch to your new device, say iPhone or another iPod Touch?
Are there any limits in transferring paid apps to multiple devices? How does one do this?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks Niel, I did this once before and so did others that I know. Guess what happened?  We lost all our data on iTunes. Fortunately, I kept a backup of my iTunes folders.
I want to prevent this from happening again.  I believe there is a "special" sequence one must follow to ensure this does not happen or was this fixed in future versions of iTunes?.

  • How can I do a hard reset without losing app data?

I have international texting on my phone and it's having an issue sending images to my friends overseas. The words go through but no media.
I have Verizon's More Everything plan and after two days trying to get this sorted on their end, they want me to try a hard reset and test the texting before I restore my backup to see if it's something in the phone.
the last time I had to do this I lost EVERYTHING regarding data in my apps. Some of the apps I have now I cannot afford to lose the info stored in them.
I need to make sure that I can restore safely once we are done with the troubleshooting.
If I have to manually put my items back in, HOW can I do that with the apps I really need the data preserved?
FYI - ALL my settings for iMessage are correct.
My international friends are not using iPhone AND I checked my settings there and they too are correct.
So, before I go and wipe everything out, can someone reassure me with some directions and ease my worries?

OK I'm going to say this for the what? 3rd time?
I know the difference between a hard RESET and a full RESTORE. My mistake in the OP was mixing up the WORDS.
If you read carefully, you would have probably figured it out without all this arguing.
I'm going to make this simple ok?
Verizon wants me to do do a RESTORE and NOT put my data back in from the backup.
They want me to test what is broken to see if it works.
If it works, then i am to RESTORE THE BACKUP and test again.
I just don't want to lose data on the backup and restore. I have indeed lost data with restoring a backup when iOS 7 came out. It was a disaster.
I fully understand what you are saying but I am TRYING to explain that it failed the last time I had to do this. I cannot make myself any more clear.
Now, I think I'm done with this since it's all become such a topic of contention. All I wanted to know is if it could be done without losing data and now the stupid cloud comes into it, those with good intentions are getting yelled at by the guy with the basketball avatar and I just don't have the strength to keep repeating myself.
All of this would be so easy if people took the time to read all the words and when / if not sure, read it again. That's what I do and I find it helpful.
You should probably go back and re read all of my response to you.  Which answered all your question.  I don't need to repeat myself again and again.

  • How do I sync my iPhone to a new Comp. without losing app data?

A few weeks ago I bought a Mac Pro from Ebay. I'm trying to sync my iPhone to it, but I can't figure out how to sync without losing my son's data on the apps he plays. I have some music on the new computer that I ripped from some of my old CD's. Is their any way to sync my phone's app info. with my computer's songs?

To be sure you don't lose any App data
             Create an iCloud backup
    2nd
    Prevent syncing automatically in iTunes
Windows    Edit > Preferences > Devices
√ Prevent iPods, iPhone .... syncing automatically
    3rd
Connect the iPhone to the PC
Setup as new.  This just tells the PC to treat the iPhone as a new device
    4th
    From the summary screen
    Create a backup
      Transfer apps
      Save App data.

  • Syncing after deauthorising all 5 computers without losing apps

HI i have deauthorised the 5 computers that were on my account. Now when i plug in my ipad to try to sync it to a new pc it looks like it is going to wipe the ipad of the apps and data already on there. How do i sync it without losing all my apps and data?
    Thanks in Advance.

I am trying to re-establish all of our i-products (a family of iPhones & iPods) without losing game/app data, song lists, photos etc on each device .
I have started with an iPod I can afford to lose data on as a trial,
I have Backed it up , Transferred the Purchases and then even synced it from its front page on iTunes.
However when I select the Music tab in the iPod and then select Sync, it warns me that all music will be lsot and replaced with the current music on iTunes, and wipes the indicator on the botom of the screen of all music,
How do I sync this and each of our other devices without losing each indivisdual's data/ music/playlists/contacts/app data etc.
If I lose everything I will be the worst parent in the world, if i sync and data is saved i remain without thanks but with some semblance of self respect.

  • Using New Computer Without Losing Apps?

I'm out of town, and I don't have music on my iphone yet. I want to put my songs on it, but my iphone has the first few pages of apps synced to my desktop. How to I start syncing with my laptop without losing all of my apps? I know it'll ask me to reset my iphone. Will that delete all of them? I'm told they're saved in my itunes account, but does that mean I'll have to redownload all of them manually one by one? I have nearly 8 pages so that'd take forever (most of my apps have never been synced to a computer, by the way). I'd appreciate any information. Thanks.

In regards to iTunes content, you need to decide which computer you want to use for syncing iTunes content with your iPhone and stick with it.
If this will be your laptop, first you need to authorize you laptop with your iTunes account with iTunes. Next be sure automatic syncing is disabled - iTunes > Preferences under the Devices tab.
With your iPhone connected to iTunes on your laptop and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.

  • Sync without losing apps?

    HI
I would like to sync my iphone with a new Macbook.
I copied the iTunes folder from my old Mac and replaced it with the one I copied.
    This being said...
If I would go ahead and re-sync with the new Mac... Will it erase everything on it?
Will I lose the apps if I would do that?
How can I keep the apps and all other info?
How can I simply start syncing with the new Mac without losing anything on it?
How do I start the sync progress from scratch but to have it just the way it is with the new Mac?
Or at least if I would have to backup the iphone, how do I do that?
    Thanks.
    Would appreciate.
    Cheers.

There is no excuse for someone not including their iTunes library with their computer's backup along with all other important data stored on their computer's hard drive. Since nowadays people switch computers often, another reason why there is no excuse for this. Apple includes Time Machine on each Mac running Leopard or later for this very thing and includes a warning message with iTunes about backing up iTunes content downloaded from the Tunes store. The iPhone is not designed or intended to be used as a backup storage device and even if it were, only someone who is not very bright would use a portable device like an iPhone as their only backup. There can be a partial or complete hard drive failure without warning at any time regardless the age of the hard drive. Don't maintain a regular backup for the important data stored on your computer's hard drive and you are playing Russian Roulette with your important data. And an iPhone can be lost or stolen or suffer hardware failure from being dropped on a hard surface or water damage from being dropped in a toilet which is very common with cell phones these days.
How hard can it be to include your iTunes library with your computer's backup per the simple instructions included with this link?
