Reinstall (broken internal dvdrom, using firewire dvdrom) problem

Hi
I'm trying to reinstall Tiger on my iBook G4 using an external (fw) dvdrom, the dvdrom is recognized in OSX. The internal dvdrom is broken (has a disc that won't come out).
When I try to boot the iBook G4 from the mac os x disk in the external dvdrom, nothing seems to happen, the Apple remains on the screen and the process indicator keeps spinning..
I tried holding c; pressing option, command, shift, delete and holding option to select the Mac OS X install disk, each method gives me the same result :s.

It's the Tiger Install Disk, I think it's an universal disk, it didn't come with my iBook...
Most iBooks require a special version of Mac OS X. This could explain why you can't startup from that disk. Exactly which model iBook do you have? (Is it 12" or 14" and what's the processor speed?) Which version of Mac OS X is included on the Tiger install disk? (It should be printed on the disk.) Here's a list of which version of Mac OS X is required by different models of iBooks:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
You may need to call Apple and get the right set of install disks.

    hi...
my v3753au is wonderfully running on 32 bit win7.  lately the bios cannot detect the internal dvdrom & kinda hard to detect (longer than usual) the internal hdd during startup.  i've tried with the other dvdrom & it's still the same.  however, the one that i used is still ok on other laptop.  fyi, i've tried with the original f.15 version as well as the latest f.28 version but both let me down.  when win7 runs, dvdrom doesn't appear either in win explorer or device manager.  i've also checked the registry for that filter thing but it isn't there.  any suggestions of what should i try next?
    tq for the help...

    > I couldn't reinstall/recover new system from CD cos Win7 couldn't detect any drive while installing.
Its no matter if the SATA mode is set to AHCI or compatible mode. The HDD should be recognized by BIOS even if the AHCI mode has been selected.
At the first BIOS page the HDD should be listed with the name and size.
If it isnt the case, it could be possible that your HDD controller is faulty.
What HDD did you purchase exactly? Is it a 2.5 SATA HDD?

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Recording to external hard drives - Firewire 800 problems

Ok so i did post a similar thread on this in the "mac mini" part of the website so im very sorry for double posting but I thought since this problems pertains mostly to recording and specifically recording on garageband, that I would try posting here as well. Heres my deal:
I am a musician working with garageband and I have always been recording to my internal drive until recently. I was unaware until I read some posts here from the good people like you guys, that that is not a good idea to record to your internal drive. So, I got an external firewire 800 drive (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DGZ05A) and this cable (http://www.amazon.com/2M-Firewire-800-9PIN-Cable/dp/B000XQILWK/ref=pdbxgy_e_imgb). When I received it, I first used disk utility and reformatted it for Mac OS Extended Journaled. Then I proceeded to move a couple sample libraries and my entire "Garageband" folder (with my saved songs in it) to the external. I instantly knew something was wrong. The files were taking forever to get written over. It took about 15 mins for a 5GB folder to be moved over. I was already discouraged. Anyway, I plugged in the USB cable that came with the external (the drive has hook ups for both USB 2 and firewire 400/800) and tried moving the same files and it was MUCH faster. The same 5GB file was moved over in a matter of minutes.
I then tried recording to the drive (using firewire again) and it would hardly even PLAY the song without stopping every couple seconds (too many effects error, and yes ALL the tracks were locked). Tried to record as well and i'd get even less time before garageband would stop the song with the same error. So I disconnected firewire and went USB. Thru USB the song didnt stop once, not on playback OR recording. Then I moved the songs back to my internal and played them (and recorded) with no problem either.
I ran a couple tests on the drive using AJA system test and came back with these results:
Basic test of read/write speed using firewire 800:
    write - 14/mb sec
    read - 21/mb sec
    then, using usb 2.0
    write - 18/mb sec
    read - 37/mb sec
both these connections seemed to be running slower then they should ..but at least the USB connection would actually let me play a song and record to it without stopping
I manually copied over a 2.04GB file and via firewire 800 connection it took 2 mins and 20 secs. Via the USB 2 connection it was 55 seconds! ..also, while i transfered the files i noticed that the USB transfer was nice and steady with tiny increments of the file being transferred. Firewire, however, was speedy then slow, speedy then slow. Very inconsistant transfer speed throughout the process. kind of choppy
So what gives? I cant figure out if I'm doing something wrong, or if my external HD is bad? Or the cable is bad? Or maybe the firewire port on my mac mini is bad (i've never used it before for anything other than this external drive). Or i'm thinking maybe my processor isnt strong/fast enough to record to the external firewire drive? Im working with a mac mini 120GB internal HD and the 2ghz intel core 2 duo with only 2GB ram (i know thats not ideal for recording and im planning to upgrade at some point, but i have been recording to the internal just fine with the RAM i have now and never had a problem until trying to record to the firewire drive). I was going to go out today and get a new cable and see if that was the cause of it. Anyway sorry for the book-length post! But PLEASE SOMEBODY help me here! ..as i said, im not very computer literate and only just started producing music using computers so please use dummy terms lol ..thanks in advance

Strictly my opinion, and more than happy to be educated with facts and convinced otherwise... but, there are no dangers.
Bottom line is this... does your specific computer setup encounter ANY problems during recording or editing with your chosen software and current workflow? If not, then there is nothing wrong. Simple as that. Further, if you are having problems, then its more than likely dealt with by upgrading RAM amount and internal HDD speed and size. If you have a slightly older machine that is pre FW800, you will find by bench marking your HDD's that an upgraded internal system HDD will significantly outperform any external HDD read/write spec's. Even with FW800, comparing apples with apples, your system HDD will more than likely have better spec's. Please however, do not take my word for this, but try it out for yourself. Make sure you have facts about your own system rather than believing my claims or anyone else's claims. I used Intech's Quickbench http://www.speedtools.com/QuickBench.html to get some facts about my machine.
There will be an argument made that you will be putting strain on your hard drive by recording to the system drive because it not only has to deal with this function but also with other functions related to your audio programs and OS. Apparently you may be working it on the 'hard' side and shorten its life span. Probably technically correct but practically speaking you will more than likely never even notice any such strain. If you are worried about a system HDD crash or death because you are working it too hard then the answer to this is a well planned back up regime. You should have one anyway, regardless of setup.

  • Migration freezes at 3.2 gig, using firewire target drive or USB HD

I fell down the stairs while carrying my Powerbook. Screen bashed, case bent. Bought new Macbook Pro and tried to use firewire to migrate files, system always hangs when I get to about 3.2 gig. This is while using migration manager, or target drive and drag/drop. Then removed HD from old laptop and connected with USB external drive enclosure. Same exact problem. What gives? I can copy smaller folders, and I will do that if there is not a fix for this. Any ideas?
BTW, it does not matter what folder I copy, it always freezes at about 3.3 gig and locks up the finder. Thanks!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Thank you everybody.
I just tried to copy from that HD via USB to another Mac, a 2 year old Imac with OS 10 whatever (non Intel). The really weird thing is that it also locked up at 3.24 gb; exacty the same as with the other computer. And exactly the same as if I copied another folder that was over 3.24 gig. So, 3.24 gig is magic number here.
I am almost sure that the 3.24 gig was the same spot where the trnasfer would lock when I was using target mode and firewire while this drive was still in the old broken Powerbook.
    Any thoughts?
BTW, I am not a computer expert, just a Mac user for work and home applications.
    Thanks again!

  • Firewire audio problems with OS X 10.5.6

    Hello,
I’m experiencing audio problems with Firewire 400 on my Macbook running Mac OSX 10.5.6.
I’ve got a 2.4Ghz IntelCore 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM and 59 GB available on the internal HD.
It’s hooked up to a brand new Mackie D.4 mixer with 2 Firewire outputs. The problems occur on both Firewire outputs.
I’ve installed automatically from the software update (which I will never do again) to 10.5.6. I never tried the D.4 with 10.5.5 so I can’t tell if the problems occur there also.
The main problem is that after a couple of minutes of recording the sound starts to break up and get really distorted. After a while the sound comes back again.
The second problem is that Soundtrack Pro or Audacity don’t get any audio input from the D.4, although audio input is clearly visible in System Preferences – Sound.
The only sound program that works with all 14 Firewire channels is Ableton, but also in Ableton the distortion occurs.
An example of the distortion can be checked here:
    http://media.kaalslag.com/firewire-distortion-problem-mackieD4+Macbook.mp3
I’ve roamed several forums and sites to solve the problem and I tried these solutions:
I updated again to 10.5.6. with the full combo download from the Apple site. Restarted. Problem still there.
I shut Airport off, because lots of sites mentioned problems with Airport conflicting with audio/firewire. Didn’t work.
I did the work around with shutting the Macbook off, disconnecting the D.4, restarting the Macbook, opening Audio/Midi Setup, connecting the D.4 again, toggling the format frequencies a couple of times. Again, no use.
Right now I’m using my “old” Macbook again to record from vinyl. This one is still running on OSX 10.4.11. No problems so far.
I’ve had the distortion problems occuring before with an USB interface. Hoped that the Mackie Firewire would solve the problem, but it seems now that there’s a serious audio Firewire problem which is still not solved in OSX 10.5.
Any help, tips and/or a work around would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You could try using another computer in Target Disk mode (as an "external HD"), or you can connect the firewire cable and disconnect all other network cables (turning off airport). Then on each computer go to the "Network" system preferences and select "Built-in Firewire" from the list of ports and choose "Manually" from the drop-down menu next to "Configure". Enter the following IP addresses and subnet masks, apply the changes.
    _Computer 1_
    IP Address: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    _Computer 2_
    IP Address: 192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
After those ip addresses are entered and you've clicked "Apply", ensure that for both computers you have file sharing enabled (done in the "Sharing" system preferences), and then check the Finder sidebar to see if the computers can see each other (their names should appear under "Shared" in the sidebar--if not, try restarting).
If the computers dont appear (even after restarting), using the "Connect To" option that's available in the Finder's "Go" menu. In there, to connect to another computer enter it's IP address as follows:
    afp://IP_ADDRESS
If you're on the computer with the ip address of 192.168.1.1, you would enter 192.168.1.2 as "IP_ADDRESS". The "afp" is the protocol (just like "http" for web), and stands for "Apple Filing Protocol"...Apple's file sharing protocol.

  • Booting external drives using firewire.

Ok in the process cloning my computer to an external drive.
    The Shell -
    Macally G-S350SUAB USB2.0/Firewire 400/800/eSATA Case, for 3.5inch SATA HDD.
    The Drive -
Western Digital 2TB SATA 6Gbps Power Saving Internal Hard Drive OEM - Caviar Green.
This drive partitioned and format via Firewire 800.
The Process of cloning was all correct.
The backup boots via USB2.0 - all ok.
My difficultly lies trying to get it to boot from Firewire 400, or 800.
All partition are visible when using internal drive. And bootable volumes are all available to select when using firewire via Disc Start in System Prefs.
    Anyone got any ideas please?

There are reports of problems booting with WD drives and some enclosures, espeically the power saving ones.
I had one once, and I've learned to turn it on then power on the computer else the drive goes to sleep.

  • Using Firewire on a HP Laptop for multichannel audio recording

While firewire is stil the standard for realtime full duplex multichannel audiorecording (see also current interfaces at Steinberg, Focusrite etc) it seems impossible to buy anything portable besides an Apple laptop. Not because firewire is not available (although less and less!), but mainly because the only thrustworthy firewire-cards seems to have Texas Instruments chipsets. So we search for specs of chipsets on the firewirecard, buy that card to be sure that we will not have crackles, hickups and other distortions during recordingsessions. In fact we are not certain, until we tried the configuration. Because we don't know what to look for. In PC-world, nothing seems to be sure.
Tranferrates are expressed in amount of data within a cetrain period, usualy a second. It does not matter if a chipset is buffering during the transfer or has a tiny hickup. The only thing that matters is the amount of time needed for that amount of data. In realtime audio- and video we need a guaranteed bandwidth for every moment. Always. A stereo-audio-cd is already using 88,200 16bit 'events' a second, without the correctiondata. Recording is about much more. Is there something to read about guaranteed bandwith in specs of interfaces, drives or cards?
Don't underestimate the bandwidth needed here, this is not about some mp3-radiostreams  of 64kb. This is about uncompressed audio, daisychaining firewire interfaces to 24 tracks full duplex for a nice amount, using 24 or 32 bits  resolution and 192kHz sample rates are today's standards. Oh yes, and of course you play and record while listening to the other routed audio streams, using plugin-effects and plugin-soundsynthesis at the same time. Without any interruption.
Besides those who want to record complete live playing band at once, also smaller 1-8 pre-amp channel interfaces are using firewire or thunderbolt, like the Focusrite's Saffire Pro 14.  It seems that USB is nice, but if you want to have the real stuff, like recording more channels with higher samplerates and just the better preamps, you'll have to  go firewire or thunderbolt. There are USB-interfaces available, but they go up to 8 mic-channels max. It is still unclear how to get to 24 channels with USB by combining interfaces and using USB3. Also because this realtime data-transfer has to be processed by the CPU while using USB, which is also busy with complex reverb calculations and trying to keep the latency (difference in time  between what you play and what your hear) as low as possible.
While the world is getting used to portable computers more and more, every day more (young) musicians are able to buy decent microphones and preamps, step by step building up there own homestudio.  And while there are people  recording with tablets already (although very limited), the laptopsellers seem not to have any clou that there is a need for something portable that can record with these firewire audiointerfaces.
Because spec-given firewire transfer-rates are no garantee that your realtime streaming transfer will be without problems, it would be very nice if HP could point us something like a laptop (serie) equipped with firewireports that we can trust and is able to transfer audio and video livestreams to our DAWs or DVWs.
Maybe HP laptops are already capable of doing this. We haven't got a clou, because we don't know what it is that we should look for besides the TI-chipset. If  somebody at HP give us some info about this, it would be great.
    - Are the HP laptops with firewire capable of recording with  audiointerface up to a useful .. say 24 channels full duplex ? (you can daisychain firewire audio interfaces).
    -  If we are not sure, are there HP laptops with TI-chipsets? And that is always doing the job?
Dear HP; if you have a laptop that is capable of doing this, prepare for a run on these.  Most people have to buy an Apple now, because they don't know better or there is no knowlegde available.
Firewire is still the standard in audiorecording. Check for example the interfaces on:
    http://www.steinberg.net/
    http://global.focusrite.com/

The external monitor will only work after windows boots. Before that step, an external monitor won't help. The entire recovery process will only use the dedicated laptop display (which is sadly broken).
I know when I recently reformatted my desktop, I hardly pressed more than a few different buttons (mostly Enter), so I was wondering if there is a set of keystrokes that I could hit to ensure a smooth reformat with the recovery DVDs I had created.

  • Firewire drive problems since 10.5.6

Ever since the 10.5.6 update my iMac locks up. Often the Firewire drive will not connect. I have tried reinstalling the complete 10.5.6 Combo Update. I tried a PRAM reset. All to no avail. The problem with restarts and lockups go away if the drive is not plugged in. The problem comes back if the drive is plugged in even if it is off. Help, my Mac is acting like a M$ machine!

i’m having the same problems with my firewire devices. I’m using time machine with a external disc using firewire and my data is on a firewire disk. Sometimes (not always!!) these disks do not mount. When i plug in with usb2 it works fine! What the f@#&* is wrong!!

  • Using one public ip for ssh`ing to different internal servers using port-redirections

Hi, we are having a requirement to use the same public IP to ssh into different internal servers using port re-direction. So lets say from outside, if a user does ssh @ root 4.4.4.4 2222, it should go to a sshsrv1 and then ssh @ root 4.4.4.4 2223 to sshsrv2
    My config is like this:-
    object network sshsrv1
    host 10.110.100.10
    nat (inside,Outside) static 4.4.4.4 service tcp 22 2222
And then i allowed the object "sshsrv1" in my inbound acl from outside.
It dosen`t seem to work. Is this doeable?
    Any suggestions??

    Hi,
Would need to see your NAT configurations.
There is a possibility that you have a NAT configuration that might be preventing this from working. Then again you are using an extra public IP address for this so it seems strange.
Could you try the "packet-tracer" command
    packet-tracer input outside tcp 12345 2222
This should tell us if there is some problem in the ASA configurations.

  • Purchasing Advice: Internal vs External/Firewire vs USB

My parents have a late 2006 iMac (17-inch, 2.0GHz) that has a 160 GB hard drive. Their iTunes library is becoming quite large with lots of music and movies and the hard drive is close to full these days. So I was wondering if it would be good enough to keep the iTunes library on an external hard drive or would you guys advise to run it from an upgraded internal drive? Personally I don't think the hard drive upgrade is too difficult but I'd rather not do it if I don't have to. Also if external is good enough, is it better to use Firewire (in this case 400) or USB, when iTunes is being used for several hours a day? Also what are the recommended brands of external drives?

I have to agree with Barbara on this. In fact I keep most of my large data files (photos and music) on external FW 800 drives. The only thing I keep on my internal drive is smaller data files, apps and OS X. As it turns out I also use Lacie drives, I have 3 one for Time Machine, another for a bootable backup using SuperDuper and the last for my iTunes library and growing Aperture library. All three are daisy chained together which has been dead reliable. From what I've been able to gather the following seem to be the most popular choices. All have similar features and build quality.
    OWC Mercury Pro series
    Lacie Quadra D2 series
    G-Tech G Drive series
