Reliability of Syncing iCal on different computers

I am wondering if anyone can comment on how reliable it is to Sync iCal info on 2 or 3 different computers over .Mac. One computer is running 10.4.2 and the other one 10.3.9. Even when things look like they are working fine, after a few days, something goes wrong and one of the compuers stops being able to Sync the iCal data or it never finishes or there are errors etc. It's usually the 10.4.2 that screws up. The Calendar being synced is a huge one, 5.7 mb, but that should not matter. I am beginning to wonder if the iCal syncing amongs different computers is really good enough for heavy duty use or is it just for light, home use.

Hi Thomas,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
First, I think it is fair to say that iCal .Mac syncing was really designed for the single user with a couple of Macs. But that doesn't mean it can't work for something more robust. There are people who are doing as you are with no problem (but perhaps not with as much data). And there are folks reporting problems syncing between Tiger and Panther (makes sense to me). And other folks reporting problems syncing period.
If you had been following threads here, you'd see that there seems to be a problem sometimes with iCal and iSync so if that's in the picture (has to be for Panther) than perhaps that's part of your problem. See the thread for more info: Patricia W, "iCal "Unexpectedly" Quitting after iTunes 5.0.1 install" #29, 10:59am Sep 25, 2005 CDT
I know that doesn't answer your question, but know that some folks are doing what you want with no problem.

  • Syncing ICal on different computers by Ipod

    hi,
I am attempting to synch calendars on different Macs. My Ipod only writes data onto the Mac (but does not receive from it). To truly 'synchronize', I would need my Ipod to send AND receive new calendar events and address book items so both computers are 'in sync'.
Can this be done (without .MAC account)?
    Thanks!

  • How do I sync on 2 different computers without it deleting my stored music?

I have songs on my home computer loaded on my iPhone, & I have songs/albums loaded on my work computer. Is there a way to sync the 2 different computers using my iPhone? for instance, I have a new CD I downloaded onto my work computer that I want to add to my iPhone but it says it is going to delete all the music I have loaded on my phone already. can I add this CD to my iPhone & not delete all my music? When I sync my iPhone then to my home computer I'd like the CD to be added to that computer as well.
Thank you for your assistance with this & HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL

But is it possible to (specifically) sync regularly with my PC iTunes library (as that computer has the larger HD), but everything else (contacts, photos, Mac Mail, etc.) to sync regularly on my Mac, sans hoops each time.
Correct, but you aren't syncing email account mailboxes and messages via the iTunes sync process. There is an option to transfer selected email account settings to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process and after the account settings are successfully transferred to your iPhone, there is no reason to continue including this as part of the sync process.
In regards to iTunes content, you can sync an iPhone with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and you can transfer photos to your iPhone from a single computer only. You can sync contact info, calendar events, and bookmarks with the supported applications on multiple computers.

  • Duplicate email alarms sent when syncing iCal on multiple computers

Hi, I have iCal set up on my laptop, my work computer and my home computer and they all are syncing using .mac, which is great because I can add an event on any computer and it updates everywhere. The problem is that when I have an event that has an email alarm all three computers end up sending me a reminder. As a result my inbox looks like a plate of spam. Is there a way I can suppress email alarms from all but one of the computers?
    Thanks in advance.

I sync my iPhone with two different computers. This appears to be something new & unique for the iPhone.
My "Info" data (contacts, bookmarks, calendar, mail) comes from my iBook. My "Media" data (music, podcasts, video) comes from my desktop PC.
I don't believe you can mix the sync data beyond that. In other words, you can't sync podcasts from one computer and music from a second.
When I started doing this, I recall getting prompted to erase all data before continuing the sync in the traditional iPod method of 1 computer to 1 iPod. But hitting Cancel to that question actually continued the sync without deleting the iPhone resident non-synced data. You may have to do that on both systems (the Cancel), but now it seems automatic. The iBook just touches the Info data & the PC just touches the media data.
I also turned off 'auto-sync' in both iTunes for the iPhone. I'm not sure if that made a difference for the dual sync. I just prefer to kick off the sync manually in case I'm downloading new podcasts or just need to charge the iPhone and don't want to go through a sync at that moment.

  • Is there any way to sync apps from different computers in one ipod touch?

    Hi
So, I have synced my iPod touch with iTunes in my mac and now I want to install some applications that my brother has in his computer.
*Is there any way I can sync applications in my iPod touch using different computers, without losing the apps that are already installed in the device?*
Thanks a bunch for your help!
    Best,
    Ezequiel

    Wow, that was fast! thanks!
So, if I do that, I'll transfer all the apps from the iPod to my brother's computer and then I'll just need to sync everything back to my iPod... and I'll also need to do the same thing with my mac, in order not to lose the apps that I copied from my brother's pc, right?

  • Syncing ical across multiple computers without .mac

    Hi,
Is it possible to sync ical calendars across multiple computers in the same network or over the internet without .Mac? If I have a website or ftp server, can I use that instead to synce over the internet or is there an easier way? Thanks.

    This is another related question.
Having at last extracted a decade of diaries from Palm Desktop as vCal (since you ask I had to go back to Classic as the app quit without writing the export file in Tiger and Leopard, even tho it is otherwise OK) I now have something I can import rather messily into iCal.
However as I have really bad internet access in the Boondocks where I live I don't want to use .Mac to sync between my iMac and iBook. Palm ran very happily from a thumb drive, but I don't see how I can do it as the powers that be seem to have made the data file invisible.
I'd like to move it to the thumb drive and have an alias on each Mac where the data should be - as I do with Palm.
Does anyone know the path, and if there is a problem doing it between Tiger and Leopard?
    Cheers, Colin

  • Sync ical between different account holders on same imac g5

    g'day.
I want to be able to sync the events of my ical with my wife who uses a different account on our imac. apple tells me you can't do this. any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    thanks.

    adam,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
(I always wanted to be able to say that to a newcomer but somebody always beat me to it.
The answer to your question depends on how you define "sync".
I have been using a very unique (at least to me) solution for the past 8 months or so involving PHP iCalendar, and publish and subscribe within ical.
I have 9 icals (3 from weather updates at www.project24.info , 1 each for my wife and I at home and at work, and one for birthdays) all sync'd to ical on 3 macs and a windows PC. On my G5 I have 2 other users on the G5 all syncing to the same directory, and using the grouping feature in ical 2.0 all their icals apear as one in ical. Each person who publishes to the directory also can subscribe to the ical of their choice if I allow them, and they can change their info as they wish when they wish.
Also using the group feature my wife (on her iMac g) and I sync our events, each with a writeable calendar that is grouped across the network. We see each others to do lists and events in the same calendar, and can change each other's input as necessary. When we have conflicts we either agree in person or change the times using invitations if I'm out of town or just talk it out . Crazy but it has worked well for us.
On my laptop when I travel I can make a change in ical, and it updates over the internet to the house, updating all icals in the home as they are refreshed from the phpicalendar directory.
Also, I have complete access to all the calendars over the internet for read only viewing when I am not at my PC or Mac but can get to a connection.
All this and I do NOT use a webdav server or .mac
This took me a lot of planning last year, and I was worried when I switched to Tiger and upgraded to ical 2.0 from 1.5, but believe it or not it made my implementatiion even slicker because of the groups feature that finally makes the calendars appear sync'd ( easier demonstrated than described)
Hope this is helpful to you.

  • How can I set up different sync options on different computers e.g. don't sync history on one of them ?

I have, say, 4 computers i want to sync everything among all but one of these. On this one I want to share the bookmarks but not the history. I noticed that if I unselect the history in the sync options then it becomes unselected in the other computers too. How can I accomplish my goal?

Dbellca82, thank you for your answer.
I read the mentioned article before, but still I can't see how does it address my problem, except that it has no solution. That is, sync options will always be the same on each and every device connected to a given account. Period. Or maybe I'm missing something...
I thougth there could be a trick beyond the standard setup, does anybody know one?
    Thanks

  • Sync on two different computers - long overdue...and itunes needs improvement

    Complaint #1)
I cannot understand why apple at this point STILL will not allow the same ipad/ipod to sync with two computers.  I have a pc at work, a mac at home - why am i unable to sync with the apps in both places?  It is 2012, and the copyright argument just does not fly, especially if i authorize both machines which apple seems to allow one apple ID to authorize up to 5 machines.
But what is the point of authorizing a computer if you cannot sync to it?  I realize this is a help forum and not a place for rants, but am at a loss to understand why apple is clinging to this awkward and very annoying/frustrating setup.
    Complaint #2)
About itunes itself, this serves as the main gateway for all music/apps/movies/books. etc., and BADLY needs an upgrade in aesthetics as well as function.
Since it is now the primary conduit for all apps and other items, why is it even called "itunes"?  But more to the point, it is an awkward and difficult app to use, and it is surprising that it even comes from apple.
Mind you, I've been using apple computers since the IIe, so i go back a ways with the company, but itunes is a train wreck IMHO, and a better platform with far more flexible features and improved functionality is long overdue.
You have a world-class tablet in the ipad 3, why did they not introduce a conduit platform on which to move/transfer documents/files etc that is equally superb?

    Regarding #1, see this post.

  • I need to get my iPod touch 4 and iPad 1 in sync from 2 different computers

I have a very specific situation that I've been unable to find an answer for.  Please help!  Here's my current situation:
I've synced my iPad to my iMac G5 PowerPC using my AppleID account that I always use.  I've synced my iPod touch 4th gen to my iBook G4 using the same account.  I thought that after signing in under that ID, I would be able to download the apps that I already purchased for iPad on the iBook.  I found out that was not the case and trying to sync my iPad(in it's current iMac-synced state) to the iBook would result in the erasure of everything on it.
What I would like to do is be able to start syncing my iPad with the iBook but not lose anything.  And then beyond that, have my iPod and iPad both in perfect sync-same apps, same everything.  Can I do this?

The iBook is running which OS X version?
In regards to iTunes content, an iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the device first.
You can re-download 3rd party apps and you won't be charged again for a paid app as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the app that was used to purchase the app originally.

  • Sync iCal across two computers?

    Hi there -
I just bought a router, and it's working beautifully. I was wondering if it is possible to sync my iCal from my home desktop iMac to my iBook (without using .Mac or a palm device) through my router?

As indicated above, the solution is to use SyncTogether from Mark/Space.
You should never attempt to use a Palm device as a data 'carrier' to synchronize data, as severe record corruption will result.
The synchronization framework, including clients like the Address Book, iCal, iSync and the iSync Palm Conduit, as well as replacements for it like the Missing Sync for Palm OS and supplemental sync-aware applications like Entourage, Transmit and Yojimbo are not intended to support such procedures. You need to use a dedicated tool like SyncTogether or .Mac Sync to achieve what you want.

  • Why does not Apple allows iPhone to be sync by two different computers ?

I have a pc at home and one in office. But I can only sync it with my home pc. Why does not apple allow iPhones to be sync by atleats two pcs as having different pc for work and home is very general.

It is possible to sync from multiple libraries manually on other devices (iPads & iPods) so blanket statements that 'it's DRM' don't really make sense to me.
If it is the only reason why can't non DRM'd content be copied?
Manage content manually on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod - Apple Support
See step 6, iPods & iPads have fewer restrictions compared to iPhones.
Perhaps we would have a better idea if it wasn't all wrapped up in thousands of words spread between the multiple terms & conditions agreements.

  • Wifi Sync lists two different computers for different items

So, we bought a new computer and I wanted to switch my phone over from the laptop to the new computer.  Accordingly, I plugged it in and told it to sync to the new library.  Which it did.  Sort of.
For some reason, it refuses to sync the apps with the new computer and I'm not sure why.  In fact, when I look at the wifi sync screen on the phone it actually shows BOTH computers.  The new computer is listed for "music and tones" and the second is listed for "apps".
I've turned off wifi syncing on the laptop, but I don't know what else to do.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Peter

    @modular747: This worked.
I synced from the computer, then I synced from the iphone via wifi too.  Basically I synced a few times and eventually the wifi sync showed everything on the appropriate computer.
    Thanks!

  • Syncing iCal on different accounts on my iMac
