Remapping keyboard keys

I have Macbook Pro with US keyboard layout, which is just fine, similar to almost any of the keyboards I have used over the years. Recently I bought a localized (Bulgaria) Apple keyboard, where the positions of "`~" and "§±" are swapped. That's a pain, as I frequently use ` and ~ (Calling Visor (Quake style terminal) and ч/Ч in Bulgarian layout).
Using Ukelele I was able to change the US and Bulgarian - Phonetic layouts, so that the keys positions are swapped, but then there is the problem that this changes the layout on the Macbook keyboard...
Keeping two pairs of layouts - one for the Macbook and one for the keyboard would be a pain. Is there a way to make the "§±" key on the Apple keyboard behave like "`~", while keeping their normal function on the Macbook?

Is there a way to make the "§±" key on the Apple keyboard behave like "`~", while keeping their normal function on the Macbook?
No, whatever custom keyboard layout you have active applies to all keyboards, and there is no way to have it only become active when you are using one of them.

  • E71: how to remap keyboard keys

    Hi!
I was wondering whether there is a way to remap the keys on the qwerty keyboard on E71. I basically want a different layout. Is there any system utility I could use, buy, etc.?
The reason I want this is because a standard native Russian keyboard ("jetsukeng" as it is called) is something I am not used to. I prefer a phonetic keyboard sometimes called "yawerty", so I'd like to use it on E71.
    Thanks in advance,

Maybe something like Magic Key? http://bit.ly/grQHq
My experience with Magic Key has been pretty good, on my E71, although I'm not remapping a whole lot of keys. I remap a few keys, so they function differently, depending on which application is active.

  • Remapping keyboard keys (again)

    Hi Svet,
I got my bios unlocked, a few keyboard keys remapped (ALT and CTRL swapped and a couple of others) and fan curves updated of my GS70 2OD-002US a while ago. I would like to get the left CTRL and left ALT back in the old positions. But I noticed that since MSI forum is revamped all my PMs are gone. Since the last mod I reinstalled Windows 8.1 in Legacy BIOS mode (disabled UEFI and erased all MSI partitions) and installed Linux Mint 17.1 along side of it (with RAID0). Please let me know if it is safe to flash a keyboard remapping now. My old post is here https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=180399.0

check PM how to fix your old account
and also i need more clarify about the new stuffs that you ask me

  • Remapping keyboard keys on the Vista side...

No problems with my Vista x32 install on BootCamp (via Leopard). But as an old PC person who's switched to Apple hardware (will get to Leopard down the road), I'd like to remap a few of the keys. Specifically, would be nice to swap the two Apple & ENTER keys to the right of the spacebar back to ALT & CTRL that we're used to on the PC side. Anyone found a good utility that lets you map specific keys?
I know this won't be an "Apple" question but thinking someone here might be in the same boat as me. I've seen some that replace the BootCamp keyboard drivers (like the one that adds fan controls), but that's not what I'm looking for. I just want to remap one or two keys, not replace the entire existing map.
    TIA

To reule out  software problem try:
    - A reset. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore the iPod from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If you still have the problem thismn it would appear to be due to a hadware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

For USB keyboard, you need to get the scancodes from evtest rather than showkey. You may find a solution from:

  • How to remap keyboard - Looking to switch the "fn" and "control" buttons?

Hi I was looking for a way to switch the function and control on the bottom left side of the keyboard on my macbook pro laptop. I am used to the control button being the button that is furthest to the left and its just really throwing me off having the fn key all the way to the left. If anyone knows how to remap these keys, I would really appreciate the help.
    Thank you.

Firefox 4.0 has a combined Reload and Stop and Go button that appears at the right end of the location bar.
To restore the Firefox 3 appearance you can use these steps:
    * Open the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window to move the Stop and Reload button out of the location bar.
    * Move the Reload and Stop buttons to their previous position at the left side of the location bar.
    * Set the order to "Reload - Stop" to get a combined "Reload/Stop" button.
    * Set the order to "Stop - Reload" or separate them otherwise to get two distinct buttons.

  • Map Thinkpad Mouse Buttons to Keyboard Key

What I've managed to do is the opposite; map a keyboard key to a mouse button.

The problem is thinkpad's mouse buttons are already bound. Is there another way to find out?
The "Using HAL" website is broken.
Also, is there a way to determine if the keys are actually hardware bound? Some of the thinkpad's keys are eg. FN keys and maybe the mute/light keys. In that case, there's no point in continuing further.

  • Difficulty remapping keyboard shortcuts on OSX

Pretty obscure problem here. I am trying to use the little-known OSX built-in method of remapping keyboard shortcuts (System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts>Application Shortcuts) to customize things, specifically to add a shortcut to access the add-ons menu. I did this a few weeks ago and I see my shortcut next to the menu item, but triggering the shortcut never opens it up. I see the Tools menu flash, but nothing ever really happens.
As far as I know, the problem isn't exclusive to the Add-ons item. I have also noticed this same problem with Thunderbird. It worked with the old Unsanity Haxie, Menu Master, but this is not compatible with 10.6. (I am running 10.6.4)
I'm guessing that this is some kind of underlying problem with the Mac version of both products. Any help or referral to where I can report this is appreciated.

I'm getting this problem with the PasswordMaker plugin. I had the problem before attempting to remap keys. I remapped keys with the suggested keyconfig extension in an attempt to solve the problem, but no dice.
    FF version 3.6.3
    OSX version 10.6.6
Other items in the Tools menu work. PasswordMaker fails with the problem described above:
'but triggering the shortcut never opens it up. I see the Tools menu flash, but nothing ever really happens. '
The extension works on all other OSes I have tried (Win XP, Win 7 and Linux Ubuntu.).
I've seen this behaviour before when a modal task in Photoshop (text editing) was blocking shortcuts.
    Any ideas?

  • PC keyboard on a Mac, how to remap keyboard?

    Greetings, sorry my poor english.
I'm using a Genius KB-19e USB keyboard with my new Mac Mini and Mac OS X 10.4.7
Some of the keys are 'wrong' and I would like to know a way of to 'remap' the keys. The 'wrong' are mostly the special 'accent' keys like ´ `º * + » etc.
    Thank you.

The ability is there, no doubt about that. The question is how you get there.
I routinely cycle through several keyboard layouts, including two custom layouts I have been using for 20 years.
I created them eons ago in MackKeymeleon. It is amazing that they work flawlessly in all versions of OS X by the simple addition of an ".rsrc" extension.
If you don't find what you need among the predefined keyboard layouts offered in International, you could make your own. I understand it's very easy to do nowadays, though I can't tell you how because I haven't had a need to do it recently.
Maybe a forum or Google search would turn up what you need.

  • Remapping character keys (not shortcuts)

    Hey everyone,
I´ve got a US keyboard on my Macbook that I would like to use with a german key layout. I actually already physically switched a few keys around and am looking at buying my umlauts (ÜÄÖ) on ebay. Now as I don´t want to replace almost all keys I was wondering:
Is there a way to remap character keys under OSX Lion?
I´m not talking about shortcuts as this can be done in system preferences, I mean actual character key remapping.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    V

Is there some reason why just switching to the German layout provide with OS X does not work?  You do this by going to system prefs/language & text/input sources and checking the box for German, plus the box for Show Input Menu in Menu Bar, and then choose German in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen.
If the layout provided by Apple is not exactly right, I can suggest another one you can install.
If you really need to create a custom layout, then the tool is

  • Remapping modifier keys and others via XML .keylayout file

I have a video editing keyboard that requires some keys to be remapped to work correctly on my mac. Specifically I need to remap the modifier keys on the keyboard. The first thing I need to do is remap key 50 to be command instead of ~. I am trying to do this via a custom XML .keylayout file. I have read the documentation on .keylayout files and can't make sense of what it says to do. Also, I've tried many of the keymapping tools that people have recommended and they don't work for remapping modifier keys.
Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi cstrouse,
I think you should try the link below and use Ukelele; it does exactly what you need with a gorgeous graphic UI.

  • Number Pad Keyboard Keys wrongly mapped

    Hi Folks,
Hope someone out there can help.  I am using a Mac Full Keyboard, ie Number Pad included, and recently the * and / Keys on the Number have started producing ' (Single Quote) and ; (Semi-Colan) instead.
Is my keyboard knackered, or have I accidently remapped my keys?
    Fingers crossed someone can help,
    Treders

If I ddn't know better, & I don't, I'd hahly suspect any KB by Apple.
But then they've really messed up the OS, might try some workarounds...

  • Why can't I get a replacement keyboard key from Apple?

    Rant version
I was delivered a new 15 inch Macbook Pro with Retina screen with a broken 'V' key (literally, just the black plastic panel has a small broken clasp). I was unable to get a genius bar appointment anywhere within London Zone 1-2, Regent St, Stratford and Covent Garden all just tell me there are no appointments available. I called the Apple store in Stratford City to see if they could order a new 'V' key to the store so I could pick it up and click it on. They suggested I call Apple customer services as they wouldn't be able to help me unless I booked a Genius bar appointment, and obviously they had none. I was informed that I would have to send the entire machine away for at least 5 working days and then wait for a replacement to be shipped out. This is a total P.I.T.A as I have already started important projects on this machine.
I managed to book a Genuis Bar appointment in Bromley (30 minutes drive from my house) and called to see if it would be possible for them to order the part in and fit it on the day, during my appointment. They said I would have to come in, just to show them the machine, and then they could order the part using my serial number. I asked why I couldn't just give them my serial number and come in when the part was delivered. They said that the telephone operator at the store could not make any sort of contact with the genius bar, regardless of the fact they are in the same building.
I'd like to point out that everyone I have spoken to have been extremely nice, and understood my frustration, they just haven't been able to do anything that goes outside of their very limited protocol.I find it unacceptable that a company as powerful as Apple, are unable to post a keyboard key to a customer.
As a computer enthusiast, this is the easiest and most simple problem I have ever had with a machine. It has also been the most common-sense defying process I have ever had the misfortune of being a part of. If it were up to me I would just pay the £3 for a replacement online, but Apple have changed the positions of the clasps from the unibody model by about a few microns, and I don't feel like waiting until someone decides to scrap a new RMBP.
I don't mind if Apple don't want me to do the repair myself, that I may need to go through the enigmatic ritual of the genius bar to get this done (heaven forbid anyone but a Genius click the 'V' key on). I don't even mind if it takes a couple of weeks for the part to get there, I just want a replacement key, stuck on this laptop, without wiping the entire machine or sending it away for a week.
    Short version:
If anyone knows where I can get a replacement 'v' key for the new 15inch Retina Macbook Pro then I'll love you forever.

Yes it is sad but true I think. I EZprint to do my pano's and they turn out excellent. Give them a try.

  • [SOLVED] xorg 1.5 + keyboard key

Certain of the keyboard keys do not work after the upgrade to xorg 1.5  These include the arrow keys and the page up and page down keys (possibly more but I didn't do a thorough check).  They work fine in the virtual consoles 1-6, however.
i'm using the "keyboard" driver in the xorg.conf, btw.
