Reminders (Using Location)

I have an iPhone 5s, IOS 7.1.
In previous versions of IOS 7, using reminders based on location was not working for me. The reminder would not appear.
I think (going from memory), I had to turn on the Background App Refresh for reminders; however, Reminders is not an option in the Background App Refresh in 7.1. Maybe it was never listed as I am going from memory.
Does anyone know if Reminders was updated in IOS 7.1? I cannot locate it in the items changed, but not all items are always included.
Thank you.
Shawn

Hi srmsrm,
Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below explains how to use location based Reminders.  The Background App Refresh and Reminders must be turned on for this feature to work.
iOS: Using Reminders
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4970
Use location-based Reminders
To use location-based Reminders, you must turn on Location Services and Background App Refresh for Reminders. Location Services alerts you when you leave or arrive at a specific location. If you force Reminders to quit, you may not get these alerts.
To turn on the settings for location-based Reminders, follow these steps:
Tap Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn on Background App Refresh and Reminders.
Tap Settings > Privacy > Location Services and turn on Location Services and Reminders.
See these tips for location-based Reminders:
To set a location, you can use a saved contact location or manually enter an address.
You can adjust the size of the location alert radius for a reminder.
Use a specific street address, if possible.
The location service icon will remain in the status bar until you mark the reminder as complete.
Location-based Reminders are available on iPhone 4 and later, iPad (4th generation Wi-Fi + Cellular), and iPad mini (Wi-Fi + Cellular).
Note: Location reminders aren't supported by Exchange accounts.

  • Get Siri to set location reminders (using multiple reminder lists)

    I found a way to get Siri to set location reminders using multiple reminder lists (but you can just use one list too):
    First make additional lists in the reminder app: click list button (the lines on the left) > edit > create new list > done. Make as many as you want. I have grocery, home, personal, business, family.
    Let's say you want a reminder to pick up apples when you get to the apple store. You must add the location in your contacts to your name in contacts.
    Do the following:
    In maps app find the location with search.
    Tap the blue arrow > Add to contacts > Add to existing contact
    Choose your name in contacts. It will be added under your address for home or work so you will need to edit it:
    Click Edit.
    Click on the small label on the left of the new address - it will just say "address"
    Scroll to bottom of page and click on Create custom label
    Enter the location name like "Apple Store". Click Done.
    Important Note: You will need to delete the url it adds under your home url section and maybe other things it messes up with the new contact info instead of yours - so check all the fields each time you do this.
    To make a location based reminder using a specific list you must open that list yourself - Siri will not open it for you.
    Example:
    Open grocery list yourself in the reminders app
    Tell Siri something like: "remind me to pick up apples" (Do not mention the location yet - if you do it will not work)
    Siri will ask: "When should I remind you?"
    Say: "When I get to the apple store"
    Siri will say she will remind you and you will see the location reminder in the grocery list.
    This is how it works for me but if you know an easier way let me know! This is beta so I'm sure it will get easier.

    I have one thing to add.  You don't have to open the list manually.  Tell Siri:  "Add to my <listname> list".  For example, if you have a list named "Work", tell Siri:  "Add to my work list".  Siri will reply, "What should I add to your 'Personal' list?
    and you can continue from there.
    There is a syntax for doing all this in one sentence, but I find it only works about half the time. Too many fields for Siri to parse in her current Beta stage

  • Do location-based reminders use data?

    I have read that location services uses GPS not data, but that if you are streaming reminders from iCloud, that uses data. Is this streaming using only minimal data? Is it even true that location services doesn't use data?

    GPS is independent from cellular data. However, if you're syncing the reminders using iCloud, that uses data.

  • Siri will NOT create reminder using location

    I'm having trouble creating a location based reminder.  I've set location service on Siri.  It knows my "home" and "work" locations based on my info.
    1. Enable Siri.
    2. I tell Siri to "set reminder"
    3. Siri asks what I need to be reminded about, I say "Buy eggs"
    4. Siri asks "when would you like me to remind you?". I say "When I leave home".
    5. Siri repeats the reminder and asks if Siri should create the reminder.
    6. I say yes.
    7. Siri comes back with "I wasn't able to create your reminder. Sorry about that."
    I've tried several times, no luck.  It's not that Siri does not know the locations, it just will not create the reminder for some reason.  Anyone had this issue and fixed it?
    Thanks.

    I had the same issue and error message with Siri.  After some tinkering, here is how I had to have a few settings in order to use "location" for Reminders.
    ICloud-Reminders ON
    Mail, Contacts, Calendars...Reminders...Default List... set to iCloud Reminders (Not Exchange Tasks nor Exchange Tasks)
    You can verify that Siri can use Location by manually creating a Reminder in the Reminder App and then click on Remind Me... and you should see "At a Location" as well as "On a Day."
    Based on this, it appears that Location Based Reminders can only be used/saved in the cloud in order for "it" to tell the phone where you are, and the trigger a reminder.

  • TS4000 Why can't I set reminders by location anymore after the newest update?

    Since updating my iOS software in May, I've noticed that I no longer have the option to be reminded of my tasks by location. Is this permanent or is there a new way to use that service? What am I missing?

    Not sure whether it's related to your location or not, but can confirm I can still use reminders by location using the latest software, do you have reminders listed under your location services.

  • Siri does not uses location services

    even if the location services for siri is on, sire can not do based-location reminders

    Siri could use location reminders before the ios 6 update, i used to use them all the time based on an address in my contacts, now no longer works, is this a result of the disaster that is the maps app?

  • How do i use location service to ind my iphone?

    how do i use location service to find my lost iphone?

    Silica Gel usually comes in a porous bag within a perforated box. Put the bag and the phone in a ziplock bag together. If you buy loose silica gel just put it in the plastic bag, then put the phone on top of it. Try not to get the grains of silica gel in the openings on the phone, as it will be hard to get out.

  • 3g camera no longer asking to use location info and not saving it correctly

    I was out at the beach this morning under a nice clear sky and I was taking pics. The camera never asked me to use location information at all and it set the coordinates of the pics to my home where I'd last used the camera.
    I can't get it to ask me to use the location info anymore. Location services are turned on in settings. Tried rebooting iPhone too.
    Help?

    Hi Nathan
    In iPhoto, are you looking at the info window bottom left? You may find that if you right click on the image (or control click) and choose 'Get Info' you will see the co-ordinates listed. It took me ages to work that one out.
    When you do get it working, I've found a really cool plug in for iPhoto to add the image to Google Earth - called appropriately enough 'iPhotoToGoogleEarth'. You can download it free from this link http://craig.stanton.net.nz/software/iPhotoToGoogleEarth.html
    If you then export the image from iPhoto to the desktop (or wherever) via iPTGE, and then drag the resulting .kmz file to the Google Earth logo in the dock, it places a pin on the map where the pic was taken - you can then click and view the image - it's brilliant and very accurate.
    Please report back and let us know if the gps data is still missing - it does seem to be a bit hit and miss at the moment.
    Best
    Tim
    PS. When I say the above plug in is free, the guy does ask for donations if you enjoy using it - to help fund a trip he is taking. It is brilliant so I will be making a small donation and recommend others do the same if they find it useful.

  • Using Location: to Redirect PHP on form submit

    Ok, I have this page where the user submits a form using  <form name="form1" method="post"
             action="<?php echo $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']; ?> and it runs this code below.  Basically sends and email and writes some files to the database.  I want that page to direct to a new page at the end.  I have tried using location: newpage.php in various spots but can't get it to run.  Everything else works great.  Thanks.
    below resides in HEAD
    <?php
    // our e-mail function
    function send_mail($from_name, $from_email, $message) {
        $to = $_REQUEST['to_email'];
        $subject = "sub";
        $headers .= "From: $from_name <$from_email>\n";
        $headers .= "Reply-To: $from_name <$from_email>\n";
        $send_mail = mail($to, $subject, $message, $headers);
        if ($send_mail) {
            return true;
        } else {
            return false;
    // check that the form is truly sent
    if ($_POST['send'] == 1) {
        // get data from the form
        //$from_name=$_POST['from_name'];
         $to_email=$_POST['to_email'];
         echo $to_mail;
        $from_email=$_POST['from_email'];
       $message=$_POST['fname']." ".$_POST['lname']";
    //mysql_query("INSERT INTO table (this, this and this)
    //VALUES ($_POST['id'], $_POST['field2'])");
      mysql_select_db($blah, $blah);
        $result=mysql_query("INSERT INTO blah (id, field2) values( '','$id','$field2')");
        // send e-mail
        $try_mail = send_mail($from_name, $from_email, $message);
        // output the result
        if ($try_mail) {
            echo "Your e-mail message was sent!";
        } else {
            echo "Your e-mail message was not sent!";
    ?>

    That looks like the correct answer, DW inserts the following similar code when creating an db insert or update, as one of the options to goto a page after the insert. This one uses the header function to perform the same thing.
      $insertGoTo = "some_new_file.php";
      if (isset($HTTP_SERVER_VARS['QUERY_STRING'])) {
        $insertGoTo .= (strpos($insertGoTo, '?')) ? "&" : "?";
        $insertGoTo .= $HTTP_SERVER_VARS['QUERY_STRING'];
      header(sprintf("Location: %s", $insertGoTo));
    Just be sure to perform all the emailing and updating before this code.
    Watch out for header issues as explained  here

  • How to use locate my i pad mini

    How to use locate my ipad mini

    Hello angeleigh4,
    It seems you would like to learn how to use the location features of iCloud to find an iOS device. The following article will instruct you on how Find My iPhone works:
    iCloud: Find My iPhone overview
    Find My iPhone helps you locate and protect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac if it’s ever lost or stolen. With Find My iPhone set up on your device, you can do the following:
    Locate your device on a map
    Play a sound on your device to help you find it
    Use Lost Mode to lock and track your device
    Note: If you put your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus in Lost Mode and you have credit and debit cards in Passbook for Apple Pay, Find My iPhone attempts to suspend your cards immediately, even if your iPhone is offline.
    Remotely erase all of your personal information from the device
    Note: If you erase your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus and you have credit and debit cards in Passbook for Apple Pay, Find My iPhone attempts to remove your cards immediately, even if your iPhone is offline.
    If you’re a member of a Family Sharing group, you can also use Find My iPhone to help find and protect your family members’ iOS 8 devices and Mac computers with OS X Yosemite. Family devices and computers must be set up to share their locations with other family members. For more information, see Set up Find My iPhone.
    When you set up Find My iPhone, Activation Lock is turned on automatically. Activation Lock makes it harder for anyone to use or sell your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if it’s ever lost or stolen. For more information, see the Apple Support article Find My iPhone Activation Lock.
    Access Find My iPhone
    Access Find My iPhone from any computer at icloud.com/#find, or download and use the free Find My iPhone iOS app. When accessing Find My iPhone from a computer, make sure you use a browser recommended in the Apple Support article System requirements for iCloud.

  • Website not asking permission for using location services in Safari iOS 6

    Website is not asking permission for using location services when using Safari mobile  on iOS 6.0 (iPhone 4s)
    Steps to replicate:
    1. Go to http://maps.google.com using Safari
    2. Choose "allow" to use location services
    3. Close Safari and wait 1-2 minutes such that the arrow sign (in the top right) disappears
    4. Go to http://www.nature.com/news/economics-and-genetics-meet-in-uneasy-union-1.11565 using Safari
    5. The arrow sign (in the top right) appears showing that the location services are used when viewing http://www.nature.com/news/economics-and-genetics-meet-in-uneasy-union-1.11565 (even few hours later)
    Why the site http://www.nature.com/news/economics-and-genetics-meet-in-uneasy-union-1.11565 is not asking permission to use location services?
    The Nature journal (site: ww.nature.com) is not affiliated with Google in any way as far as I know!

    I figured out how to stop this from happening. I did 3 things, and I'm not exactly sure which one of them did it because I did them all at the same time.
    1. Turned on Private Browsing
    2. Cleared Cookies and Data
    3. Turned off JavaScript
    This stopped time.com from using my location without permission.
    I then turned off Private Browsing and went back to the same page, and it continued to NOT use my location.
    I'm thinking JavaScript being turned off might be the solution. However, there is a bug that causes JavaScript to turn on again without permission at times:
    http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/12/21/ios-6-bug-reenables-javascript-in-safa ri-without-user-consent
    So just be aware of that. But hopefully doing the above works for you!

  • Apple store app using location in ios7.1 even when not launched

    Just updated to iOS7.1 on my iphone. SUDDENLY the location icon on my menu bar remains on and is showing active use of location (under settings..... privacy.... location..... )... APPLE STORE is turned ON for location services..... but it is showing as ACTIVELY using location (battery life and phone resources) despite the app not even being launched
    My fix? Turn off LOCATION services for APPLE STORE APP... and the location icon goes away.
    Closing out the app manually DOES NOT stop the active use of locaiton services BY THIS APP.
    Only app acting this way since change to iOS7.1
    Is this affecting other people the same way?

    I do, but the same was happening with earlier iOS versions. I think its due to system services using location, like for traffic, cell network search, etc. For me they typically go away after 10 or so minutes, so I left the ones I think may be useful on, but if you turn location off for system services then you shouldn't get the intermittent location querying at all.

  • Why is "genius for apps" using location services?

    I noticed that in iOS 6, that there is now a "genius for apps" entry under the location -> system services.   Every time I go in there it shows as having been recently used (purple), despite me not having used the App Store genius recently.   It does this on both my iPad and iPhone.
    What exactly is triggering this? Why does app genius need location services?  Could this explain the poor battery life I'm seeing under iOS 6?

    Basilisk wrote:
    When I open iMovie it creates an alert that says iMovie cannot access the photos or videos on the iPad without Location Services being switched on. [...]
    Anyway, it gives some instructions on how to change the settings to enable Location Services for iMovie, but none of the things it says to do appear in Settings. I can't enable Location Services for iMovie in Settings - Location Services, or in Settings - iMovie. I can enable the camera for Location Services, but that makes no difference to iMovie which continues to refuse to edit anything on the iPad.
    The short answer is try connecting the iPad to a computer and doing the initial iPad set-up/registration via iTunes. (Maybe you can do the same thing via iTunes on the iPad.)
    I had the same problem Basilisk describes, on a brand new iPad. I purchased iMovie through the App Store (directly on the iPad), but couldn't do anything with it due to the catch-22 described above. iMovie did not appear under Settings > Location Services so I could not turn on location service for iMovie.
    Subsequently, I connected the iPad to my iMac and went through the first-time set-up of the iPad by iTunes. I selected some music albums and photo albums to sync to the iPad.
    Back on the iPad, iMovie still did not appear in Settings > Location Services, BUT, now when I launched iMove a different dialog box appeared. Paraphrasing, it said, "iMovie wants to use your current location. This will allow iMovie to use location information in your photos and videos. Don't Allow/ Allow."
    I tapped "Allow" (grudgingly) and iMovie was now usable, and it now appeared in under Locations Services.
    The catch-22 situation is a bug. If the iPad setup via iTunes is indeed necessary to get around the impasse, nothing tells the user that.

  • IPhone 6 Motion Calibration Always Using Location Services

    hi
    just received my iphone6 and is updated to ios8.
    IVe noticed that the location services was constantly on so went through each item which was enabled for location sharing and disabled one by one. I discovered that under Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Motion calibration was purple. As soon as I disabled it location sharing icon switched off. As soon as i enabled it it came back on again and the purple icon showed up next to motion calibration meaning it was in use.
    So my question....what is motion calibration and why is it constantly using location services??
    thanks

    yes i have the same question, new iphone 6, restored from icloud back-up from my iphone 5, and motion calibration is using location services very frequently. it doesn't appear to be draining my battery to badly, but id just like to know exactly what its doing so i can know whether or not i want to  keep it on. turning it off until i know exactly whats its doing.

  • My ipod touch is using location services of china and does not show the place where i am living in india.

    when i use location services through wi-fi my ipod doesnt show my exact location and uses china as default location , so i am encountering problems while yousing apps like watsapp or wechat etc. plz give me a solution

    For location the iPod uses the location of nearby wifi routers that are in Apple's database. You do not have to be connected to the network/router to use that router's location. Thus, it appears that the iPod can't see a nearby router that is in Apple's database. or finds one that has it location as China.  Apple continuously updated their database based on info they obtain from iPhones. However, I do not know if that applies to India. No one has been able to find a way to inform Apple of a router or correct is location.
