Remote Connecting to a PC from my Mac

Hi, I am wondering how I can essentially "screen share" with my friend using a pc. By this I mean they share their screen. I've been looking on the internet for answers and I have found multiple hits for connecting from PC to Mac but not the other way around. In addition, from what I have read, nothing was vert step-by-step. I heard about TightVNC so I told my friend to download it and that I would be able to remote connect to them using what I have in Leopard. However, it's at this point that I am completely clueless on how to actually establish that connection.
I would like to know what the PC user needs to do and secondly what I would need to know/type in in order to connect to their pc and control their screen.
Thanks

When it says "computer:________" Connect. I put in the PC's ip address (I'm pretty sure it's the right one, I will ask again if not).
Do they have a home router between their ISP connection and their PC? If so, their router needs to forward port 3389 from the Internet to their PC. And the IP address you need is the IP address assigned to the router by the ISP. They could access a web site such as <http://whatismyip.com> to find out their public IP address.
1. Who's user name and Password? The PC User's or My account name and my password? If theirs, they don't have a name or password, they turn on the computer and the desktop is there, without having to log in. Do they need to have one (an account or w/e).
The PC's Username and Password. And yes they do have a username and password. They may not remember what they setup, since they have it set to auto login. I do NOT know how to find out this information, as I am a Mac and/or Unix kind of guy
2. Domain. This is optional is it not? Can the IP go in here?
This is the Windows account domain, and nothing to do with IP addresses nor DNS. Mostly they have WORKGROUP or MSHOME as their domain. If it is optional, then ignore it.
Here are some alternative approaches. Sign-up for a free LogMeIn.com account <http://logmein.com>. Have them install the LogMeIn.com server and associate it with the LogMeIn.com account you created. Now you can use your web browser (Safari) to login to the LogMeIn.com account, and from there connect to their PC's LogMeIn.com server.
The current version of Skype allows screen sharing, however, I think it is a view ONLY connection. That is to say, you can watch their screen, but you can not control their keyboard, nor their mouse. <http://skype.com>
Another choice might be a purchased copy of GoToMyPC (there are both Mac and PC versions).
There is also TimBukTu from <http://www.netopia.com> which is also cross platform.
VNC has also been mentioned. Again, VNC needs router port forwarding, only VNC needs port 5900 forwarded. TightVNC, UltraVNC, RealVNC are possible Window's VNC servers. JollysFastVNC (highly recommended), Chicken of the VNC, or Mac OS X built-in Screen Sharing (Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server -> vnc://ip.addr.of.pc). I only recommend the built-in Mac OS X Screen Shring if the other system is on the same high speed network, or if connecting to another Mac OS X system.

  • Setting up Remote Desktop Apps for access from a Mac with 2FA

    Hi
Setting up Remote Desktop Apps for access from a Mac with 2FA.
I have a server 2012 remote access gateway, with remote apps published(which uses single signon), behind a 2FA connection (web based) and want to know if its possible to allow macs to connect to the remote Apps behind it. i cannot permanently remove any
of the above setup as it is a requirement.
When i connect from a mac i can login to both the 2FA and remote access web pages and see all the apps but when i click on any app it downloads it to the mac and when i try to run it using Remote Desktop App for MAC i get an error :
"httpendpointexception: 4, The non-proxy http connection failed to connect with the message: 500 internal Server Error."
I have tried with 2fa turned off for testing and get the same result.Does it support 2012 TSGW server? does it support Remote desktop apps? as i cant find a definitive answer on either.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
From Error description it seems to be a communication issue between your Mac and your RD gateway server. If you connect from extranet, you may need Remote Desktop Gateway or a VPN/Direct Access connection to your intranet, or forward port 3389 on your router.
500 Internal Server Error seems to be a HTTP related error.
The HTTP status code in IIS 7.0, IIS 7.5, and IIS 8.0
Also, please double check the settings if you have a RD gateway implemented in you intranet.
    http://redmondmag.com/articles/2013/12/24/rd-gateway-in-windows-server.aspx
In Windows Server 2012 R2 RD Gateway pluggable authentication is also introduced. This allows custom authentication routines to be used with RD Gateway. For example building a two-factor solution on top of RD Gateway is now possible which allows doing token-authentication
to the RD Gateway which works seamlessly with RD Web Access or RDP file launching.
Please check below article for more information.
Windows Server 2012 R2 is coming what does this add to RDS – VDI
In addition, please provide the log file from the client for further research.

    Hope it helps!

  • Connecting to a pc from my mac via airport express wireless network

I have successfully been able to access my mac from my Windows XP machine via my AE wireless network that I set up with my Mac. However, I am unable to do the reverse. I.e. connect to my PC from my Mac.
There seem to be two issues I need to figure out to make this work:
    1. Firstly, the option to allow sharing for any of my Windows folders has been restricted because apparently I need to create a network first but I have a network and both the PC and Mac can access the internet, share a printer and see each other via this network so I don't understand what's wrong. Do I have to create a network from the pc side of things as well in order for this to work?
    2. When I attempt to connect to the pc from my mac I do the following from Finder: GO >> "Connect to Server" then I type in smb://<ip address of the pc>. When the dialogue comes up asking for "Workgroup/Domain", "Name" and "Password" comes up I know I have the correct workgroup and I know the pc is there because it's full name is displayed but I'm not sure what to enter as "Name" and "Password". I assumed it was the username and password for the windows user on the pc whose files/folders I want to access but then I'm told the connection can't be made because the name or password isn't correct. I tried every user name and password I could think of in these fields--even the accounts for my mac--but they all give me the same response.
I'd appreciate it if someone could someone lend a hand.
    Joey

Sorry, I don't know which articles you have already reviewed.
Sharing folders on the PC should be nothing more than enabling "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" option under Network options & then identifying which folders you want to share.

  • Cannot connect to the internet from my MAC on WRT160Nv2 - no problems connecting from my PC

    Hi,
I have just bought a WRT160Nv2, but I am having problems connecting to the internet from my MAC (a powerbook with OS X) when I connect to the router wirelessly. If I try from my PC the Internet works fine. Also if I connect the MAC directly to the routers LAN port, the Internet works.
When I connect wirelessly from the MAC I do get an IP adress, and I am able to access the routers web configuration page. I can also see that the correct DNS gets assigned, so I am low on suggestions to what could be the problem.
Currently I have the router set up to WPA2 encryption, but I have tried different settings, e.g. no security at all with the same result.
I just tried upgrading to the newest firmware (WRT160Nv2_v2.0.02_008), also with no luck.
Also I should mention that the MAC can connect to other wireless connections without problems, e.g. my previous ZyXel DSL router.
Any ideas to what could be the problem?
    Thanks,
    Rasmus

Well maybe WPA2 Security is not compatible with Mac so change the Security mode to WEP or WPA and prepare security key of 10 digit password and while connecting to the wireless network on Mac type a $ sign first followed by the 10 digit passoword and it should work.

  • How many users for remote connection can I  create, from support SAP

    Dear all
I have a doubt with how many users can be created in my system ERP 6.0 for the remote connection, for the error product  messages on the marketplace SAP,without this counts as user license.

    I appreciate your help.

  • How can I remotely take over a PC from my Mac

My father has a new notebook running Vista. I have a new Macbook Pro running Leopard.
He lives 3000 Miles away and regularly calls me for help. Anyone know how I can remotely take over his PC in order to fix problems and help him along.
    Thanks

Eric, in reading the posts, it seems you are familiar with Mactopia's RDT. I can connect to my work PC via RDT 1.0.3, but the connection doesn't hold whether I'm directly connected to my router or using Airport. If I bring a work PC laptop home, I can remote connect to my work PC using Microsoft Windows RDT on the laptop with no problems.
Do you know if there is something I need to do via preferences with my VPN and Mactopia RDT on my PowerBook to maintain a good connection to my work PC? I've tried to find support or discussions on this at the Mactopia site (nothing remotely relevant) and I only some meaningful discussion here via your comments to Curious George's questions.
Any hints you could give for a better Mactopia RTC connection to my work PC using my PowerBook is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Nancy

  • Can't connect to my Macook from my Mac Mini

    Hi,
I’m having a problem with file sharing in OSX 10.6.4
I can’t connect from the Mini to the Macbook and vice-versa.
I’m not sure why, tried to look for a discussion that would solve, but found nothing.
Basically, I can see the macbook/MAc Mini in the sharing section of the left bar, click on it, and the wheel spins forever...
Then click on connect as, and after a while I get a message saying:
There was an error connecting to the server “nameserver”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again.
So then I do “connect to Server” from the finder, and I put the address of the server into it.
I get the same message I got before.
I’m on a wireless network, that uses no password protection, but it uses mac address identification.
    Help is welcome.
    Thanx.
    Luca

None able to help m e on this?
I think there's something in the preferences of my accounts that is creating the problem.
Is there a way to reset File Sharing preferences for a machine?
    Thanx

  • Connect to Old Backup from new mac

I recently purchased a new mac book to replace an older one that I had backed up wtih Time Machine/Time Capsule. I need to file an old file that I backed up but my new Time Machine doesn't show any history. How to I get to my old backed up files?

Once you're sure you've got the new Mac set up right, you should probably erase your TM disk before starting to use it for backups of the new one.
The reason is, TM on your new Mac will not delete any of the backups from the old one when it needs space for new backups (and the first backup on the new one will be a full backup). Instead, it will delete your oldest backup of the New Mac.
In essence, the backups from your old Mac are "stranded." You can delete them via the TM interface, but that's one at a time and rather tedious. See item 12 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.

  • Connecting to AD Shares from my Mac

    Hi all,
Okay, I finally got my Mac to see and connect to our AD Domain Controller, but how do I get to a specific folder (\\server\c$\Home Directory\My Home Folder--for example)
I don't see a way to do it in Finder.
    Thanks a bunch.

The Mac doesn't have any run-line commands like the PC does. I mean there are run-line commands for terminal services, but we're not talking about that.
Typically, you'll need to authenticate to the server, mount the volumes you want and then you can make alias's to folders/files you use often.
If you save the password in the keychain, all you need to do it double-click on the alias and they'll open right up.
I have at least 14 mounted volumes (different Mac & Windows servers) we use everyday on 14 different Mac workstations.
I don't like seeing the server volumes, so I turn off the mounted volumes in the Finder prefs. The alias's stay wherever you place them on your desktop after rebooting.
The only downfall to this is if you have to change you password for server authentication, you'll have to make new alias's.

  • Connecting to windows networks from a mac

I have a G5 with airport card installed which is connected via ethernet to an airport express, and there are several wireless networks provided by my school nearby which I am unable to connect to through either my card or the express. Meanwhile, my friend has a windows laptop (which I'm typing on now) that is able to access these networks correctly, and detects them automatically. Is there any way I can configure my G5 to connect to these? I've tried connecting to the networks in question manually (there's no password), but am unable to do so, as it gives me a generic error 'there was an error joining the Airport network "<network name>".' Is there a specific configuration issue that's preventing me from accessing the networks, or are they only accessable from Windows computers?

The cable connects my computer to my airport express, which I've used in the past to extend my range (especially at home). However, even with the cable disconnected and the express unplugged I am still unable to connect to the school network. Any other thoughts?
