Remote Desktop and Intel processors

Does Remote Desktop work well on Intel processors working as a VNC server? I do not see a Universal icon on the Remote Desktop website so this would run through Rosetta if I am correct.
Dual 2.7 Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm not exactly clear on what you're asking here so...
The client software installed on the Intel based CPU's will allow you to log in and control/observe the Intel based client just fine. Simply turn it on and configure as you would a PPC based machine.
If you want to use the Intel based CPU as an admin (to control/observe FROM), you will need to use the Rosetta hack described in other threads.

  • Apple Remote Desktop and controlling over VPN

    Hi All,
I had a question about whether something was possible and if so if someone could point me to instructions/how-to on setting it up.
I have three Macs I am administering. One is an iMac that stays in the office on the network. Two are MBP's. One is always at a remote location, the other comes in and out of the office. I work remotely administering the server and the three systems. I have the latest version of Apple Remote Desktop and obviously can access the server fine. I was wondering though if there is any way besides having the person give me their IP address every time that through the VPN I can see their system, then access it in Remote Desktop just like we are on the network together? Basically they connect to the network via VPN if they are remote and I do the same thing and then access their machine.
I hope that makes sense. I went through different parts of the guide for ARD but didn't come across a method like that described in there.
Anyone with opinions? Thoughts? Chants of I'm an idiot? haha
    Thanks

Yeah for some reason I cannot get this to work right. Even if I scan the 5 VPN IP's I have setup I cannot see their machines when I am connected to the VPN. I tested it the other day by connecting one of the systems to an outside internet connection, then logged it into the VPN. I then connected my own to a different source and logged into the VPN, but Remote Desktop just won't find it.
Just not sure why it doesn't work. I can see the computers on our internal network though, just not any connected via VPN.

  • Remote Desktop and Snow Leopard Server

What is the best way to use Remote Desktop with Snow Leopard Server?
I purchased a mac mini with snow leopard server and Remote desktop so I can easily manage my 11 computers, install and upgrade software etc. etc.
The mac mini server will basically be nothing but a server.
I will use as my main computer a mac pro. Do I need to install Remote Desktop on the server and on my mac pro? What is the best way to deploy the services of Remote desktop and mac os x server?

You install Apple Remote Desktop on the machine you want to control from. In this case, install on your Mac Pro. All you have to do on the clients (controlled Macs) is enable remote management in the System Preferences under Sharing. Just make sure that all your controlled Macs are up to date on their ARD version (v3.3.2) which can be taken care of from Software Update.

  • Remote desktop and apache

    remote desktop and apache.
There are times I feel that someone is looking over my shoulder, and changing my settings and controlling me.
I would like to at least be able to communicate with them so I can ltarn. I also want to be able to monitor and have some say so as to what they are doing to my computer.
    Thank you

    Thanx for your reply.
I should have stated that this is my personal computer and if any one should be the administrator I would think it would be me.

  • Apple Remote Desktop and WildBlue Excede

I am trying, without luck, to get Remote Desktop to work with WildBlue Excede. Can port forwarding be established with their Surfbeam2 Satellite Modem? If so, what are the port numbers, and how is it done?
Has anyone had success in setting up Apple Remote Desktop and WildBlue?
WildBlue Technical Support said they do not provide static IP addresses, so it couldn't be done. Something tells me that is not true.
Has anyone had any luck with WildBlue?
    Many thanks

    Hi Paul,
Are you trying to connect to a computer that's connect to the internet with wildblue excede? or are you trying to connect to a computer some where else while your connect to the internet with wildeblue excede?
Ether way, have you considered an altertive solution? For instance LogMeIn?

    Hi guys,
I have a solution with 16 WAAS 4.4.3 and I got good numbers in all default applications except Remote-Desktop and Replication

I have to modify something in the Microsoft servers to be able to got reduction in Replication Application ??

As you said, you need to only send the changes over the line.
Java can not tell you what has changed, so you need to either write some JNI, or do a check on the current image, with the last image. (this would eat quite a bit of CPU time on the server).
It might be worth looking at the source for VNC, and other simler products.
The simpliest solution would be to split the image into blocks of x by y pixels, then do a pixel-by-pixel check on that block, and only send the block if it has changed.
Next thing to think about is scrapping RMI, and using raw sockets. RMI has a fair sized overhead.
Zipping a JPEG is unlikely to have any effect. A JPEG is already compressed.
You might want to look at a lossless compression format, like PNG, as the JPEG will have articles. This might be acceptable. If so, changing the compression ratio of the JPEG might be an option.
Finally, the bottle neck might be the call to Robot.createScreenCapture. This is not the fastest method.

  • Remote Desktop and Airport

    Dear All,
I have an iMac which is connected to the internet via Airport Extreme, with no direct ethernet connection. I am trying to connect back to the computer via Remote Desktop and using the automatic IP address which is assigned. (Setings->Network)
I cannot access this IP address via Remote Desktop. Any Ideas?

I suppose you mean you're trying to connect to your Mac from outside your LAN. The address you see in the Network panel of System Preferences is a LAN address. To make what you want to do work, (1) from the remote computer you're going to have to specify the WAN address of the AirPort Extreme and (2) configure the AirPort Extreme (via port mapping) to pass the Remote Desktop signals to your iMac. To see the port mapping settings, in AirPort Utility look at the Advanced panel.

I am accessing a windows server using remote desktop and I am wondering if I can transfer files by sharing drives?

Probably. You may be able to use Finder > Go > Connect to server to access the server. You may be able to share folders using Remote Desktop too. Whichever one you like the best.

  • Confilicts with XP "Remote Desktop" and ZFD4 "Remote Control"

He have a similar problem like this. Some machines, after installing Zen4

Resolution: With workstation at CTRL+ALT+DEL or password prompt, access

tools from the display adapter, like HotKeysCmds -> C:\Windows\System32

Logon at the WS and if it run fine, reinstall the display adapter.

I'm not sure if Apple Remote can, but
Microsoft offers a free program called Remote Desktop Connection so you can do just that.

  • Problem with remote desktop and lock screen

I know of the easy way to immediately lock a Mac's screen by clicking the menu bar lock icon from KeychainAccess. This works on every system under my control (rMBP running Mavericks, MacMini with 10.5 and Mavericks). However when I control the Macs via Remote Desktop (currently 3.7.2), that lock icon behaviour changes.
Trying to lock a 10.5 system, the screen inside the Remote Desktop window goes black immediately. Moving the mouse activates the password dialog. That is what I want. Doing the same in a remote Mavericks system, the screen goes to a dark blackish semi-transparent state. Moving the mouse immediately restores the normal desktop view, no password asked. Is this a feature or a bug in Remote Desktop? This change in behaviour must have come in around Lion or Mountain Lion.

    Hi
Do you use the Intel Proset Utility to configurate the WLan connection?
Try to configure the WLan using this tool and check if the Wlan would disconnect again.
Im also interesting what Wlan driver did you use?
Did you use one from the Intel page?
If not, check the Intel page for the newest WLan driver version.

  • Remote desktop and smart cards

I frequently work from home using my mac to access my windows based desktop at the office. I use the microsoft remote desktop v. 1.0.3. for MAC. Now that my agency is moving to smart card identification requirements for access I need to be able to use the smart card at home to sign onto the office desktop.
The RDC for MAC does not have an option for smart card readers (as opposed to the RDC for windows version). Is there alternative software that would be simple to install on my MAC (I am not an IT sophisticate) that will give me smart card access?

Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) for Mac and Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) are two completely different tools with marginally similar capabilities. Unfortunately, as you've already discovered, neither offers Smart Card capabilities to allow you to authenticate to your Windows computer at work.
If your Mac is an Intel Mac then you could probably run Windows using Parallels or Boot Camp on your home computer and use the Windows RDC client to make your connection. I don't suggest trying to use VirtualPC if you have a PowerPC Mac simply because your Smart Card reader will most likely be USB and VirtualPC has a bad track record with USB devices.
    Hope this helps!

  • Remote Desktop and Brother MFC-6490CW not working

I have installed a Brother MFC-6490CW on my iMac 20" Intel with Leopard 10.5.6 and have had no problems getting to work using local mac programs printing through the USB cable.
I cannot get it to work correctly when I log into my Windows 2003 Terminal Server and print to the local Brother printer.
Originally, I had not installed the driver on the server and the connection would use the standard Apple LaserWriter 8500 driver. This was fine for as long as you only wanted black & white 8.5x11.
I then installed the driver only on the server and was asked more questions than usual. I had to pick out whether it was a USB or ethernet printer off of the server. Since it is neither, I just selected LPT1 and hoped the remote desktop would ignore it and sent it to the virtual port.
It does send get sent back to the Mac, but I get the error 'client-error-not-psossible' from the Mac printer spooler.
Brother support was useless, they said it must be a Microsoft problem. It is amazing that these little disposable $100 printers work fine, but the expensive networkable Brother printer won't. I suspect it is only a configuration problem on the server, but do not know what to do.
    Thanks for the time......

    Mac Skoog –
I have a few questions for you on this –
    - Is the printer and Server in the same location.
    - Can I assume that the printer is currently connected to the Mac.
Here are some things to consider –
When connecting to a Windows system via RDP windows will attempt to connect to the default printer of the computer (Host System) running the Remote Desktop Client. This only works if the connecting system (Windows 2003 server) has the same drive loaded/available as the host system. I have seen issues with RDP not playing well with USB printers or rather USB printers with ‘special’ drivers.
If the systems are together might I suggest that you connect the printer to the server directly via the network –
    http://www.fullerton.edu/it/services/Networks/faq/PDF/network_printer.pdf
Once you do this then you won’t need to connect to the printer connected to the Mac.
    Respectfully –
