Removing duplicates in Address Book...

Hi: In all the years I have used Address Book, the "Find & Combine Duplicate Cards" feature has never functioned, I repeat, has never functioned. It always freezes the program once it has completed the find and begins to combine duplicate cards. "Address Book Not Responding" is the message I always get in the "Force Quit" window -- which I indeed have to do. I always back up before I again try to use the feature hopeing it's been "fixed" via recent automatice updates which I always accept and install.
Please assist if possible. I would love to see that feature functional, especially now that I have an Iphone. I'm a consummate Filemaker user and find I must continue to maintain both Address Book and Filemaker records for my work which is a terrible inconvenience for we power users. One would hope that the Address Book database program soon becomes as sophisticated as our Macs and Iphones as it is the very basis of all our e communications systems. At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.

  • Can't remove duplicates in Address Book

Have lots of duplicates in Address Book since moving to iCloud. Went to Card>Look for Duplicate. It found a few and so merged them but there are still lots of identical cards that are not recognized as duplicates. Is there a simple, easy way to remove them? Otherwise, I may have to spend hours doing it manually.

If you click on File, and choose New Group, does the same thing happen?
What keyboard and mouse are you using?

  • Duplicate the Address book ?

How do I copy / duplicate my Address book that is on iCloud so I have a non cloud copy on my Mini or is there a method to sync both?
    Cheers

If you are using Outlook 2011, make sure you have the latest service pack and update.
Make sure your Mac Book and all devices have the latest update.
If the Calendar on the Mac Book is correct go to step 3
Assuming Mac Book Calendar is correct, remove accounts from iPhone, iPad.
Reconnect account to iPhone, iPad account.
All calendars should now be in sync.
There are times when the Mail, Calendar, Contact application has been corrupted (Outlook 2011, Mac Mail, Entourage, etc).  This will cause all kinda of issues on your devices.  You have to repair the mail client first.  In the case of Outlook you can delete the profile and recreate it.  In Mac Mail you can rebuild (from Tools on the menu bar)

I just  don't understand what's happened to the Address Book I used to have when I was using previous systems.
This is very confusing, are you saying that on the iCloud website, in Contacts there is only 1 card? yes or no please and refer to the website only

  • How do i eliminate duplicates in address book/contacts across multiple devices?

i have old iMac G5,  iPhone4; recently added new iMac, iPad2, & Time Capsule, so i have multiple contacts & address books that i need to consolidate without having 3 duplicates of the same person every time i update? Please help?  Thank You!

Since upgrading to iPhone 4S and using iCloud, I have eliminated the duplicates in the address book, but not the calendar. Once all devices were setup for iCloud, I had duplicates in address book and contacts on my iPhone. So in settings on the iPhone for iCloud, I turned off calendar and address book. After a few minutes I turned those back on. Then, it synced with iCloud and no duplicates. At least in address book. The calendar continues to display duplicate appointments.
It's frustrating. Maybe all of us Apple users just don't know how to do this corectly. But it seems like a bug. Otherwise, why not address the confusion in the marketplace and post online training for how to sync all your devices without creating duplicates. Since that solution/training has never surfaced, I say this is a long standing bug in the system and Apple has never figured it out. It remains one of the few complaints I have about Apple. Wish they would get it right.

  • Duplicate Contact/Address Book entries on iPhone

why do I have duplicate contact and address books entries on my iPhone? I never had this problem until I upgraded to iCloud. I have an iPhone 4 and it is upgraded to the current OS.

  • Duplicates in Address Book on iMac since iCloud

As soon as I enabled iCloud, on my iMac Address Book, I now have duplicates of every contact. This only happened on my iMac. My iPad and iPhone don't have duplicates in their Address Book. Why would this happen? In the "notes" field of my contacts, I noticed that with the duplicate contacts, there are more notes in one entry than others (for example: Jane Doe's "notes" field show three lines of text that I entered, but the duplicate of Jane Doe only shows two of the lines of text in the "notes" field, leading me to believe one contact is newer than the other, but which is which, and how do I delete all the OLDER versions, and not accidentally erase the more recent versions?)
My god, Apple, you really messed this up! Does everyone remember when "It Just Works"?
    HELP!

Could you please help me clarify which sequence I should be using to retrieve my backup Address Book data from? I, too, lost my contacts during a sync and am trying to retrieve them.
Is the recovery sequence in Time Machine Backups this:
    1. Date-> Mac HD->Library-> Application Support->Address Book
    or is it this?
    2. Date-> Mac HD->Users->my name->Library->Application Support->Address Book
After copying the backup Address Book folder to the Desktop and opening the Mac HD icon, do I go to the folder Library->Application Suppport or the folder Users->my name->Library->Application Support to trash the Address Book and reinstall the backup copy? I have been trying both w/o any luck recovering my contacts thus far.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • Scores of Duplicates in Address Book

Somehow I have come up with scores of duplicates in my address book. Short of going through one by one, how can I eliminate the duplicates?

Second this query. In my case, I know how I got the duplicates: I was importing old Mozilla mail and didn't notice that many of the messages had already been imported. My error: I now I have over > 125,000 duplicate message. I don't relish the thought of deleting the duplicates by hand.

  • TS4147 merging contact duplicates in address books

I tried merging contact duplicates in my address book thorugh the card- look for duplicates option but it does not seem to recognize any, althoug almost all my contacts are duplicates.  Any other suggestions??
    Thanks!!
    Kris

That command finds duplicates if they are in the Same account, it sounds like you have more than one account, my guess is that you have 2, iCloud and On My Mac, check.

  • Duplicates in addresses book when converting to iCloud

I had a mobile me account with a me.com address. My primary Apple account (which is my email I primarily use/not the me.com account) with all my purchases has been active long before I had the .me account. When I moved everything to iCloud my address book became a mess of duplicates. How do I fix?

    Dear Sir.
I use only Mac software, apart from Blackberry Desktop software, which gave no problems.  Recently I purchase Microsoft Office 2011, only Excel, Word and Powerpoint, however Outlook was installed but not activated.  Very soon I noticed duplicates in my Address book and subsequently on my Iphone.  This also appeared on my Blackberry when I next synced it.  I want to follow your procedure to clear all duplicates, however since I never activated Outlook (One has to pay extra to Microsoft), I cannot turn off SyncServicesAgent.  (I cannot stop it in the Activity Monitor, it simply starts up again after a few seconds).  I do not ever plan to use Outlook, it caused same problems before and I was forever deleting duplicates, hence me using Mac programmes such as Mail only, with no problems any more.  How do I get rid of Outlook?  I also noticed my Microsoft User Data, especiall 2011 Identities, is over 50gig large!!  Why is it so and can you tell me if I can delete this?  Please help if you can, you sound like the only person who actually studied this problem and found a solution.  What is wrong with all the Microsoft Engineers out there????

  • Duplicates in Address Book?

Every time I edit or add info to a contact on my address book, it makes a duplicate... How do I fix this... It does it on my iPhone 4s and on my ipad 2...

I have the exact same behavior on my iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1
    On icloud.com I don't see the duplicates.
Edit: It seems to have something to do with changing the Apple ID, which I did recently. Look at this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17239744#17239744

  • ICloud installation created duplicates in address book on all contacts.. how to correct?

  • Duplicates across Address Book, iCal and iCloud

I recently installed iOS5 and got iCloud and set it all up. I thought I had done it all properly, but admittedly have had to fiddle with it in order to try and get it to work properly. And so I now have "two" address books ("All on My Mac" and "All iCloud"), but they are not all direct duplicates, some entries that I have on my mac are missing from iCloud. In addition to that problem, I also have duplicate birthday entries now on iCal on my mac. And thirdly, in order not to have duplicate entries also on my iPhone calender, I cannot synch my Address Book from my mac to my iPhone, which means I am missing some of my contacts, those that have not transferred into iCloud (see my first point). So, in a nutshell, can anyone help me with:
    1) Getting my Address Book on my mac to transfer all my contacts from "All on My Mac" to "All iCloud"
    2) Getting my iCal to just use the iCloud address book entries
    3) And if none of the above, how to easily transfer all recent iCal entries back to "On My Mac" so that I can just forget about iCloud altogether
I'd really appreciate any help as I am tearing my hair out!

I feel your frustration, Quilps.  I went through the exact same thing.
Yes, part of the answer is to delete (or archive and delete) the copies for the ON MY MAC group.
But for me, I think the problem was more than an "ON MY MAC" copy and an ICloud copy.  I think I was bringing in copies of the databases that were stored on my other devices. I may have synced some of the devices with ITUNES after I had made the move to the Cloud.  Bad move.
In any event, it ended up fairly disastrously until I figured out a way to delete everything, get one clean copy and bring it everywhere.
Just wanted others to NOT experience the ordeal I went through in order to get it right.
    I'm not Quilps
