Removing Fan Noise

I shot a wedding in August and it was terribly hot in the church. They had setup many many fans to cool off the audience, which was nice but the audio for the ceremony has the underlying fan noise in it. The groom was mic'd and the only other source of sound I have is from the shotgun mic on the camera, eliminating the fan noise at the time of recording seemed impossible with the equipment that I had.
I am able to do the reduce noise and you can barely hear the fan noise but it makes the audio sound like it is in a tin can, is there anything I can do to not make it sound so tinny? I have tried to remove the noise to the point where the tinny sound starts but you can still hear the noise very loudly, almost making the noise removal pointless.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Jeff

If the noise is a very low hum (low as in frequency, not amplitude), try using the low cut filter under process . . . eq and filters.

  • Removing fan noise in footage using FCP

I have audio that has a low-freq fan hum. I have a long time ago read about a built-in (?) filter in FCP that analyzes the hum, and using phase-turn eliminates (or at makes it less noticeable).
But I can't find that filter? I tried the Hum remover, but to me that filter is more for removing that 50 (or 60) Hz humming you might get when using poor audio cables.
    Any tips is greatly appreciated!

You will find that if you remove the fan noise completely, you'll also damage the voice. A blower generates a full spectrum sound. THe absolute best way to fix this is at the time of the recording

  • Removing Fan noise from lighting

First, thank you for your responses... Secondly, I know these problems should be thought of in advance and not to rely on post so I would appreciate help rather than criticism...
There is noise from the fans of the lights. A single person is speaking to camera in an inside room. I have reduced noise (set noise print –> reduce noise) in ST Pro, which got rid of fan noise (-45db), but distorts the voice so it sounds like he is speaking underwater. I added an EQ filter, but can't get this to sound very good...
I have Soundbooth CS5 and FCS. Thanks for any help.

STP noise reduction has a tendency to do that rather quickly. The only thing that helps is to reduce the amount of noise reduction which defeats much of the purpose.
First first adding some parametric eq to reduce the bad frequencies and then do a noise print and noise reduction, using less reduction, no lower than about 54dB.
You can also go into the spectrum analyzer and try to carve out the bad frequencies. This is more difficult than in Soundbooth's version, which is were I generally head off to for that sort of work.
Recently I've been trying Isotrope's RX noise reduction and find it miles ahead. Where I was using it I found I had to back up and reduce background in a lot more shots I'd previously just skipped over. It's one of those things that can be too good. It's spectrum analyzer is also quite good.
    Good luck

  • Mac Pro 2x2,8 Ghz - Fan Noise - Please help evaluate

    Hi Guys,
Since yesterday, I'm the proud owner of a Mac Pro 2x2,8 - Really happy - really nice machine.
However I'm slightly irritated by the posts I've read all over the internet, saying that you can't hear the fans of this machine at all in idle.
As you may have guessed, my box is not silent at all - it is quite quiet compared to other noisy PCs, yes, but no match for the previous iMac 24" which it replaced. You could hardly hear the iMac versus now the Mac Pro... you notice it's there... sitting under the desk - audible.
I realize that fan noise is highly subjective, and I'm using the Mac in a completely silent environment. No AC, no nothing. I've tried the following: removing the hard drive and silencing the graphics card... Upon bootup the Mac would quickly "turbo" it's fans and then go to it's normal state. The loudest fan (which is drowning out all other noise) is the one at the bottom front (CPU?).
Looking at istat, it's in normal parameters (500rpm or so) and doesn't move up or down...
Comparing it to other devices, it would sound like a PS3 when having played 1 hour (fan speed at level 2-3) or an (quiet) xbox in idle mode (dvd not spinning). I know... geeky comparisons
Now, again - not close to my interpretations of "whisper quiet" "can't hear it at all"... "only hear it when I put my ear to the grill" "sounds like it's cooled passively"
Which makes me think that either
    a) people out there are deaf /
    or
    b) my Mac needs a closer look by a genius
    Would really appreciate your opinions.
    Thanks,
    Tom

    hey tom,
you might have the same problem i have. I have the 2.8 octo 2008 mac pro. and it used to be whisper quiet. I was amazed. But recently as in the last few weeks the graphics card fan has become audible. I put in an e sata adapter last week and while inside the mac pro I took a look at the fan to see if it was dusty or visibly distressed. Nope. Couldn't find anything wrong with it. So now i'm just dealing with the noise. Which is too bad cause I really really really don't like fan noise. But the air conditioners on most of the time now so I really can't complain about a little fan noise compared to the ac's grumbling.
but i'd like to know if others are having this problem
    thanks,

  • Extreme fan noise on Retina Macbook Pro "15 2012

My Macbook runs very loud without intensive apps open when I connect it to a Thunderbolt Display for over an hour. I have tested this to great length, it doesn't matter whether it's photoshop, microsoft word or google chrome that's running, it's the fact that it has to power an external display.
I have taken it to Apple Support, however they perform their cooling system tests in 18 degree airconditioning so it's impossible to demonstrate how loud it gets at normal room temperature.
I presented this problem twice within my warranty period, but Apple will simply do their test and deny any problem as the fans barely start up in the cold test environment. They did say that if my laptop overheats and becomes damaged, they will cover the damages because I made the complaint within the warranty period. Now my warranty has expried (I simply didn't have time to waste taking the computer to Apple again within the last two months).
Is there anything I can do to get my laptop fixed? I'm pretty sure the graphics card was faulty to begin with as it cannot take the load of a Thunderbolt Display over an extended period. There are so many documented cases of issues concerning fan noise and overheating with the 2012 rMBP, is Apple not going to do anything about it?!

High CPU usage will make the fans run faster (luder) you can try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery that should not remove yourself. Also have the Apple tech make sure you do not have a bad temp sensor.

  • Peripherals = fan noise?

i'm going to post this in a couple areas since it doesn't apply to just displays.
i have the last revision (D) 12" PB and have been thinking about switching to the macbook for some time. one problem i had with my pb was that the fan came on a lot whenever i had it plugged into my Dell 2005FPW, USB (shuffle, usb flash drives) devices, and firewire (my external lacie hard drive) devices. when i remove them, the fan dies down in a matter of seconds. I wanted to know what kind of experience you guys had with fan noise when you plug a large external monitor, or peripherals. thanks!

This question should first be answered with your PowerBook, because it should not happen.
It could be extra power draw from the USB devices. This would create heat and trigger the fans. Borrow a powered USB hub and see if the problem goes away. The powered hub will feed the devices, so the computer doesn't have to.
If that doesn't work, then you'll have to eliminate the devices one by one till you find the offender. There could be some software you installed with the device that's causing the problem. Typically, I find that most devices do not need extra software.

  • ATI fan noise

    Hi everyone,
I've just bought I ATI 9800 Pro 256MB Mac Special Edition, and the fan noise is extremely irritating.
I've been to xlr8yourmac.com and have seen a couple articles on replacing the fan with an Arctic Cooling VGA silencer and the Verax G03. Both operations seem a little hairy to me. A visit to the Arctic Cooling web site reveals newer products such as the ATI silencer 1 and 2.
Has anyone had any luck installing these types of products onto an ATI card and what was the result? Also, how difficult was the operation?
    Thanks very much,
    Christian

Hmm - it's all coming back now.
Verax instructions were not good - but xlr8 covers it pretty well.
Verax recommend using the power available at the optical drive, rather than connecting direct to the socket on the card, like the ATI fan.
Verax, unfortunately, supplied a single, direct Molex-type power connector with the G03, but their excellent support quickly sent the correct Y-connector, as shown on xlr8.
Twisting the ATI fan off the GPU takes guts - but may be made easier by warming the area to soften the thermal paste.
I don't know whether cleaning the old paste off to a mirror-finish is vital, but with nail-varnish remover(all I could find...) and cotton buds it takes a while and needs care to keep it off the surrounding PCB. Final clean with methylated spirits(denatured alcohol) as there are other ingredients in nail-varnish remover.
I used the thermal paste supplied by Verax - but used more than xlr8 suggest, as the GPU heat-sink was lower compared to the surrounding bits than in their photos, and it was the only way to get a good even contact.
Made sure I was grounded/earthed throughout - just in case.
Time taken...? Depends how thorough the cleaning, I suppose.
Not much more than an hour as I recall. Maybe two hours. More time spent reading and re-reading the instructions than actually doing the job!

  • My Powerbook G4 make some fan noise. Please help!

From last night my PowerBook G4 makes fan noise. It sounds like fanning sound when the computer is overheated during hot summer. But my room temperature is aroung 70 degree.
It happens when I open many windows but I need to open them to trade some at TDamertrade.com site. To check other sites too.
I would very appreciate any suggestions I can try to fix this fan sound.

It is possible that you are having these issues because you installed the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.3 by mistake:
I remember when this was released that PowerBook G4 owners were seeing this update via their Software Update application. Sometimes I just install those updates without closely reading what they are for exactly. Anyway, I know it says for high work loads, but you would be surprised how easily the fans will turn on high just from simply web browsing.
I suggest that you first try resetting the PMU:
*If the computer is on, turn it off.*
*Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.*
*Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.*
*Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.*
*Press the Power button to restart the computer.*
If the above works for you (great), if not, try resetting PRAM and NVRAM:
    *Shut down the computer.*
*Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.*
    *Turn on the computer.*
*Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.*
*Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.*
    *Release the keys.*
If the above works for you (great), if not, try archive and installing:
If the none of the above worked for you (not so great), do the following:
Go to your closest  Store next week after making an appointment with a Mac Genius:
I hope that I helped you solve your problem, but do post back if not and I will help you narrow down what is going on even further. Personally, I feel that I am better than going to see a genius because most of them are just trained for Intel machines these days out in CA, where as, I know all the way back to PPC and Mac OS 7. Best of luck.

  • IMac fan noise noticeable?

I am thinking of getting a new iMac. Am used to a very quiet computer, using a Macbook Pro 15inch. Does the iMac have much of a noticeable fan sound? Or is it basically quiet?
    Thanks,
    Richard

Today I layed the mac face down on the desk, removed the power cable and all periphials. I pluged the mac in (still face down) and powered up. The fan noise was still happenig. Just above the power supply I began applying a small amount of pressure against the case. As I increased pressure the fan noise got worse. In the spot that made the most differene in noise I continued to massage the case (if you will) assuming the fan enclosure was probrobly jared durring shipping causing the blades to rub the case as the fans turn. I then powered down, removed the cable, and took of the memory door just below the apple between the speakers. This is a great design by the way. Changing memory is almost as easy as pluging in a USB device. Anyhow, I made sure everything was tight and secure in there, closed the door, put the mac back upright, and powered up again.
Under this current boot I am not experiencing the fan noise. Maybe the fans moved enough to stop rubbing the case. Lets hope. I would hate to have to take this back to the apple store. I am in Lexington SC and the nearest apple store is in Charlotte NC 1.5 hours away. It's been runnning for aprox. 30 minutes now. "Still holding" Thanks for all of the responce.

  • Incredible fan noise

I have a 20" iMac G5. Despite removing Virex that caused the high CPU usage in my computer, I am just utterly disappointed with the fan noise. It is unbearable. Right now, my computer sounds like it is about to explode-the only application I am using right now is Safari and the CPU usage is about 20%.
I purchased this from CDW-G and will definitely try to replace it with a new one or even get a refund. It doesn't seem like this is an isolated case. How amazing.

Tae, go to http://www.gauchosoft.com/ and download X Resource Graph (XRG). This analytical tool will tell you the speed of each fan (3), cpu usage and temp plus hard drive temp. Then feed the specific temp. and rpm details back so everyone will have a little more info to work with.

  • Fan noise on MacBook Pro C2D

I received my 15" MacBook Pro today. Very happy
I'm experiencing a problem already though. It doesn't have the same description as other whining/noise problems I have read about, so I will post it here to see if I'm the only one.
Near the right speaker, I have a noise from a fan. It comes and goes away randomly. I can remove the noise manually if I put some weight to that area of the case, and I can remove the noise if I try to lift the case a little by putting in my nail in the small crack on the right side of the case.
Has anyone experienced this problem, and maybe found a solution for it?

    Sure.
    http://www.conscius.de/~eidac/index.html for smcfancontrol
http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/index.html for Fan Control (embeds itself in Sytem Preferences). This is the one I use, although they're both excellent.

  • Macbook Pro Fan noise

I have had a 2012 macbookpro (15 inch) since they came out, and just now, I have begun to notice fan noise sort of like a faint grinding sound. It only occurs when I tilt the computer to the left, and then back to a level position, or fowards and backwards. I have seen some postings were some say it is the fan motor, though I wonder if it could be dust collecting in the fans.
Even though some suggest taking it to the Apple store in other threads, I can't because I simply don't have the time to take it about 100 miles.
So here is my real question: Is there a safe and effective way to clean the fans of dust without potentially voiding the warranty?

take off the bottom case and check for dust and remove if necessary.  Taking of the bottomcase does not void the warranty as Apple allows you to upgrade the ram yourself and that is required to do so.

  • Worrying about iMac with Logic Pro. (i mean big fan noise)

    hi.
i am thinking about buying a new iMac with Apogee Ensemble. but i am a bit worried about the fan noise from imac when i use lots of plug-ins and etc.
well... the best way is to buy a Mac Pro and stash the machine in a machine room or a cabinet or something. but the budget is low here.
does anyone have any good ideas? do i have to take the fan noises? or is it really so powerful so that makes no such big fan noises?
    thanks

I have no doubt that you and I haven't been reading the same posts, but I was under the impression that most people were much more infuriated that there was no announcement or run up to the launch (and thus they bought L9 just before).
Actually, we have been reading the same posts! Apple, historically, have never (and I do mean NEVER) pre-announce releases of Logic Pro. They are always announced on release day, even going back to before the Mac App Store, when boxed versions were still available. Apple do have quite a generous refund policy, so I suggest that anyone who feels cheated could always 'report an issue' via the link in the receipt email and try and obtain a refund. Personally, I would never buy a current version of Logic Pro until July was over, but as I've been using it for over 11 years now (before Apple bought Emagic), I guess I'm very familiar with the release times.
So why not keep support for EXSManager/Keymap, or at least a download link for paying customers. There is no other program that can do what it did unless you want to go back to an old version of Logic and utilise functionality that they removed yet is still relevant today.
Redmatica wouldn't have been allowed (under the terms and conditions of the buyout), to keep making the EXSManager, it would have been illegal as it's now an Apple product. That's like saying why didn't Emagic keep making a version of Logic for the PC after Apple bought them, because they obviously weren't allowed under the terms and conditions because it became an Apple product. While I can understand your frustration, you also have to understand the legalities that take place during takeovers and buyouts, as it's really not as simple as it may at first appear.

  • Hard Drive upgrade? and fan noise.

I have a 2008 MacBook 4,1 (Early 2008) MB404LL/A.  Im thinking about switching out the hard drive for a bigger one.  Would the 2.5" HGST 5400RPM 7mm HD be compatible?  Or would you guys recommond a different one?  Also, every now and then, my fan will blow pretty loud.  Any ideas on how to fix that?  Any tips would be appreciated.

Most 2.5" SATA drives should work with the machine; the drive that originally shipped with the machine was a 9.5mm so 7mm will fit.
Regarding the fan noise - your machine being 5 years old, there's probably lots of dust clogging the fins of the heatsink along with dried up, degraded thermal paste impeding thermal transfer, hence leading to high system temperatures and the fan working harder to dissipate heat.
Since you'll have the machine apart while replacing the drive, take the opportunity to remove the fans and blow out the heatsink fins with a can of compressed air.
If you're feeling up to it, you can remove the motherboard along with the heatsink assembly and replace the ancient factory paste with a fresh new coat - I suggest Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste.

  • G580 loud fan noise

Well a lenovo, used for a year and a buzzing loud crackling fan noise problem... Aren't we surprised!!!
Useless to ask for a BIOS update for a essential product, they didn't care to give one for a thinkpad.
    Here's the problem though...
The laptop makes a buzzing fan noise. That is not a fan running at full speed. This noise is more like a buzz of a large fluoroscent tube. And will stop, well, if you tap it, knock it, or use your acquired accupressure massage tricks for the revered Lenovo products. Problem is it will reappear after a few minutes or seconds depending on your luck.
Lenovo don't seem to provide any off shelf fans at least in India for the product. Even the cpu temp seem to be rising. It has touched 70C for i53210m.(room temp at 26C, load 100% for arnd 30 sec, avg load 6%)
My question is with the temperature on the higher side, and the fact that I cannot feel much air from the fan, how do I know the gurgarating buzzing loud fan is actually working or needs to be changed?

    Hi pkj5ue,
You can get access to the fan by removing the bottom cover and taking the 3 screws out and removing the keyboard.  The fan will be visible at the top left.  Blowing come compressed air in through the vent and vacuuming out through the fan should suffice for a simple cleaning.
Here's videos  showing disassembly of the various components.
If you need to replace the fan or reapply the thermal paste, yes, you will have to disassemble the laptop.
