Removing previously backed up files

I just got a warning my disc was full. I check my prefs and discovered that I forgot to exclude a few large folders, like Applications and Music both of which I back up daily to other drives. So I've fixed that.
But Is there a way I can get TM to delete all previously backed up Application and Music files to bring my TM disc down to proper size? Or do I have to erase the disc and start as of now?
Thanks,
Steven

Yes. +Enter Time Machine,+ locate and select the folder in question in one of the "cascade" of Finder windows. Click the "gear" icon in the window's toolbar and select +Delete all backups of <item>.+ You'll get a confirmation prompt, then one for your Administrator's password, then TM will do just that. This may take quite a while -- if you exit TM, you may see a progress bar.

  • Will new backups erase previously backed up files and pictures on icloud?

I have backed  up my iPhone to iCloud's. If I erase my camera roll so I can have room to take more pictures, will the next time I back up my phone erase previously backed up pictures that's already on icloud? Or will it just add new pictures to icloud?

I'm not trying to restore my iPhone. I wanna keep adding pictures to my icloud. Just wondering if new backups add new pictures and data to icloud storage or does it simply replace the previous backed up info to iCloud's. I don't have a laptop that's why
As you say, effectively,"the backup simply replaces the previous backed up info to iCloud".
If you want to permanently save your photo use a cloud-based service like DropBox. The photos will be saved and accessible.

  • Can not connect to Time Machine back up file after restore

After receiving my G5 iMac back from the Apple Store I had to restore from my Time Machine backup (they had to erase the hard drive). The backup seemed to go fine until it hit the "Network settings." It froze there for a couple of hours. Everything else seemed fine. I quit the back up and restarted my iMac and it seems to be doing fine. I did notice that some of my shareware programs need to have their keycodes re-entered and when I open up a program that has not run since being restored I get that warning window telling me that it is opening an application for the first time.
But here is the main issue...Time Machine doesn't recognize the previous back up file. I do not want erase the current file to start over...just in case something didn't get properly restored. I much rather just have Time Machine recognize the existing file...anyway of doing that? I do not have enough room on my external hard drive to have 2 backup files.
    Thanks...Lenny

I am having a similar problem - when I updated to Mavericks the install seemed to go OK until the last minute, then it literally hung for hours. I decided to re-boot the computer.  From there, it seemed like the Mavericks install was a "clean" install, and it was like setting up a brand new computer.  All of my programs were kept, but it lost all of my files from finder, as well as all my e-mails, etc.  When I tried to backup from Time Machine, none of the buttons seem to work, and I can't get it to work.  Also, before the install my 500 GB Time Machine drive was showing almost full, now it shows about 300 MB full.  I also tried to migrate the files from the Time Machine drive to the iMac, still with no luck.
Good thing I had migrated my iTunes and photos to other external drives, and I was able get those back. Losing 500 MB of photos probably would have given me a heart attack.
    Any suggestions?

  • Time Capsule/  Erase Back Up Files

My TC worked for weeks but it suddenly dropped dead and lost connection. I hard reset it and was able to reestablish internet connection although when I clicked on the icon on top right I can no longer get it to back up. When I opened the TM preference, I can no longer find my disk. It only asked me to choose disk but the list is blank. I did the entire set up steps again and was able to reconnect to internet but not backing up but the thing died (lost power with lights out after 10 or 15 mins.
Is there any way I can erase the previous back up files in my TC? I want to send it back to Apple after erasing my files. I have always been a big fan of Apple products but the TC completely shattered my confidence.
    Thanks.

It opened into a new pane from which I am supposed to choose the disk but the pane is blank. Now the TC just power itself off after 10 or 15 minutes. I am about to give up. I never had a single problem with my first generation Airport.

  • I recently updated the iOS on my ipad 3 and lost all my files in the process. How do I recover my lost files which were not previously backed up?

I recently updated the iOS on my ipad 3 and lost all my files in the process. How do I recover my lost files which were not previously backed up?

If you don't have them backed up somewhere, then there's little possibility of recovering them. There are some utilities that can in some cases recover an inadvertently-deleted photo, but I've found none that can recover photos or other data from an iPad that was erased as part of an iOS upgrade. You can do a web search for something like "iPhone photo recovery" and you'll find some utilities you can try.

  • How to remove a roll back segment file in 8.1.7

    Hi,
How to remove a roll back segment file in 8.1.7 ?
My RBS tablespace has two datafiles, how can I delete one of them ?
    Thank you.

    You would
    a. Create a new tablespace to hold rollback segments
    b. Create rollback segments in the new tablespace
    c. Bring the new rollback segments online and the old rollback segments offline
    d. Wait for all the old rollback segments to go offline (they'd be in PENDING OFFLINE if there are active transactions)
    d. Drop the old rollback segments
    e. Drop the old rollback tablespace -- after confirming that it has NO active rollback segments and NO OTHER segments at all
    f. Modify your init.ora to specify the new rollback segments in the "rollback_segments=" parameter
If you want to switch back to the old tablespace name and segment names, you'd do steps a to e and then run them again to recreate the old tablespace name (with 1 datafile, excluding the one you want to drop) and segment names.

  • When I delete files on a USB, it doesn't free up memory on the stik. I find I have to empty the entire stik, use Disk Utility to 'erase' it, then transfer back the files I removed to free up all the space on the stik. Is this the best practice?

It frustrates me that if I delete a file from a USB, it doesn't free up the memory on the stik. I have been removing all the files from the stik, opening Disk Utility and erasing the empty USB. That frees up the entire stik. Then I have been transferring back the files I removed from the stik. The result is that I have memory available to use again. It seems to me this is an unnecessarily complicated and time consuming way to get the result. Is there a shorter way to do this?

    Hello Horst,
Thank you for the question.  Have you been emptying your trash after deleting the items?  For the item to be removed from your USB device, you will need to empty the trash on your MacBook Pro after you delete the items, as described in the featured discussion below.  Your USB device will still need to be connected when you do this:
Choose Empty Trash from the Finder menu. Unlike Windows, the trash needs to be emptied manually for any drive other than one mounted through the network.
Can't delete off my USB drive

How to remove the entries of the names of the previously read PDF files in order to not to leak privacy

Bear in mind that the files will ALSO be in Windows or Mac's recent document list, and even if they weren't, the files will still be around and available. If they are not available, then just the name may not be much of a security bit (unless the file is called my_secret_bid_for_ibm.pdf or some such).

It is used for syncing/pushing data to your other devices, and for backing up. It does not add to the physical capacity of your device.

  • Is there a way to get back a previous iTunes backup file than the most recent Backup?

I did a manual backup and wanted to restore the iPhone, but iTunes forced me to update the iPhone before allowing me to restore the iPhone...
After updating, I realised that iTunes created a backup automatically without confirming with me, and now the latest backup file is not the one I wanted.
Is there a way to get back the backup file I manually backup?

Is there a way to get back a previous iTunes backup file than the most recent Backup?
No, to the best of my knowledge the device backup area is simply updated with new information each time the device is backed up so there are no previous versions preserved. Once a backup has been used to restore a device however it gets locked and dated so that you could return back to that snapshot at a later date.
Your manual backup should have simply updated the backup with any new data since the last automatic backup. Upgrading should not have overwritten a backup taken just before the upgrade with a, presumably, empty state. Have you actually tried to restore the current backup that is available? It may have what you want after all. You might like to try backing up the current state of the device to iCloud first, or if you have access to another computer back it up to that.
N.b. I always disable automatic syncing of devices so that I am in better control of when data starts to be written, and in which direction it flows.

  • Adding previously removed person back to a group ...

I removed a person from a group chat but now wish to put them back in. However when I try to add them to that specific group their name doesn't show up. I can add them to any other group chat besides the one I removed them from before. How do I go about adding a previously removed person back to the chat that I removed them from?

Use the Move tool and drag a corner. Be sure Constrain Proportions is turned in the options bar, or else hold down Shift while you drag if it isn't.

  • Problem removing backed up files from iPod

I backed up a lot of files from my macbook to my iPod classic. When connected to iTunes, they appear under "other". The "other" files are about 55GB. I don't need the backed up files any more, but can't find them listed anywhere when I view my iPod content in iTunes. Plus, I don't think I should delete ALL the files under "other" because some are necessary for normal operation of the iPod. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you!

    Hello Frank,
You will have to navigate to these files from within a Finder window. You can do this by clicking on your iPod's icon on your desktop.

  • How do i complexly remove previous cs6 trial download files/software in order to download a more

how do i completely remove previous cs6 trial downloads from the computer where we have multiple users downloading adobe trials periodically?

    Hi lottolord1,
You can use the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool to remove the previous trial downloads.
Note : Trial periods can't be extended. After a trial expires, you need a serial number to install the software as a licensed version. Or, you can install trial software on another computer.

  • How to recover deleted back-up file(s) from iTunes?

I'm needing to figure out a way to recover back-up files that iTunes removed during the recent install to the update 11.0.1.
I went to back up my phone manually. (Which I've been doing for years) I've never used or enabled auto-sync. Before I start a back-up I re-name my phone in a format like this "iPhone0913" This is to eliminate any confusion. That iTunes might try to interpet as, a duplication of another back-up file. By it having the same name (Which I know it won't but I do it anyway) Before the installation of the new update. I had 8 back-up files all dated and in order with the name designation that I've proivded. For example: 1. iPhone0105 2, iPhone1106 etc. as the numeric designation is for the month and year. So Oct. 2005 was my oldest back up file.
Once the installation/update took place, I plugged my phone in and clicked on back-up to this computer. All was moving along as it should, since this was only a back-up. Not a back-up and restore!! At any rate, I went through iTunes to verify that the back-up was there. (As I always do) And low and behold.. GONE!!
The only back up that was showing, was the back-up of "iPhone0913"  I did'nt go into panic mode at that point. Thinking that maybe iTunes moved or maybe archive the back-ups. I was trying to remain optimistic, but I knew there was'nt much that could be down. But maybe, I'm missing something.. I was able to locate 4 of 8 back up files. Only because I had backed them up from another drive.
I don't have Windows System Restore, enabled, So I was'nt able to recover that way. I'm still beside myself that this even took place.
At this point, I'm looking for any recommendations, sympathy.
Thanks in Advance for your help and support!
