Good day fella i'm having a problem scanning my Nokia N70 for the virus in my PC, My PC is installed with ESET NOD 32 2008 anti virus running on windows XP proffessional with service pack 2

Well v have had enuf talking on this topic. It is upto u to believe.I do agree that, the out break is low(or maybe too low)bt i certainly can't deny its existence completely. No matter wat the platform is(v2 or v3fp1)i've seen them in action. For the above user,u never knw browsing/downloading wat could get u a virus on ur phone(i am talking abt my N70,since u mentioned the whole s60 platform). For the thread starter,I forgot to mention that, if u really wanna scan ur phone through your pc then u can use 'Quick Heal' Antivirus which gives u an option to scan ur phone as well!

after removing virus from xp home. itunes gives error -50 when i try to open it.

Ah, the old jokes are still often the best ones, rIcHaRd ...
The -50 in that context can indicate damage to your Apple Application Support. (Apple Application Support is where single copies of program files used by multiple different Apple programs are stashed.) So I'd first try a repair install of your Apple Application Support.
Restart the PC. Head into your Add or Remove programs control, select "Apple Application Support", click "Change" and then click "Repair".
Does the repair install go through okay? If so, does your iTunes start launching again?

It's probably the MacDefender scareware trojan horse. If you have this here is how to remove it.
    1. Open Activity Monitor look for MacDefender process double click on it and hit quit or force quit.
    2. Go to System Preferences, Go to accounts, Go to login items look for anything related to MacDefender hightlight it by clcking on it once. Then hit the minus sign to remove it.
    3. Go to applications folder and drag MacDefender to the trash.
    4. Open finder and do a search for Macdefender and remove anything you see related to MacDefender.
    5. Open Spotlight (the little magnyfing glass in the menubar far right corner) and do a search for MacDefender.
    6. Restart your computer and empty trash.
    7. If you feel you need to have virus protection for your Mac use ClamXav. It's the recommended AV program for MacOSX. Hope this helps.

  • Can't remove virus.

Hi, I have the viruses autorun.inf and ise32.exe on my Macbook running 10.5. I can ID and locate the viruses with Clam and Sophos. I have put them in the trash but cannot remove them. If I try to empty the trahs I get a message that I do not have authorisations.  Even the terminal app refuses rto delete them from the hard drive.  What can I do besides completely efface the hard drive?  Of course I can do that and move the data to another drive (though the virus has infected my backup drives as well).  But if there is a way to remove these POS I would like to know.

After much searching I found a solution at besttechie:
Move it to the gtrash, then:
How to force the Trash to empty using Terminal
This technique uses a Terminal command to fore the Trash to empty.  It is important that you follow these steps very carefully.
    1.      Launch Terminal, located in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder or search Spotlight for Terminal
    2.      At the Terminal prompt, type the following command exactly as written:
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*
    THIS WORKS.

If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, remove adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac, and AdwareMedic. If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.) You might consider adding this Safari extensions: Adblock Plus 1.8.9.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

  • How do I find and remove viruses, malware, etc. from my Macs?

I have been plagued with pop-ups suggesting that I have a virus and need to call a certain number immediately.  Won't do that but need to know how to clean my Mac PowerBook and MacAir and am having trouble making a Genius Bar appointment.  Can anyone help?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.
If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.
    Open this folder:
    /Library/Application Support
If it has a subfolder named just
               something
where something is the same string you saw before, drag that subfolder to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Application Support" folder or anything else inside it.
    Finally, in this folder:
    /System/Library/Frameworks
there may an item named exactly
                v.framework
It's actually a folder, though it has a different icon than usual. This item always has the above name; it doesn't vary. Drag it to the Trash and close the window.
Don't delete the "Frameworks" folder or anything else inside it.
If you didn't find the files or you're not sure about the identification, post what you found.
If in doubt, or if you have no backups, change nothing at all.
The trouble may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Then, still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • How can I find and remove viruses from my mac

I fear that I might have a virus on my beloved macbook pro. i message was spassing out and not sending my messages, my folders continue to dissapear from my desktop causing me to restart finder (not a big deal just annoying) and some other out-of-place things are happening. I don't like credit cards so i can't buy any intvirus software so I was curious to know if there is a way to search for, find, and remove this potential virus on my own.

Apple provides and updates malware protection as part of the operating system functionality. There is no application you need to run. In using Macs in the corporate world and privately over the last 20+ years, the only malware that got into a Mac came from a shared MS Word document. That was in 1994.
Everytime that I chose to run a commercial or opensource anti-virus tool, a full sweep showed no infections.
There may be other systemic issues with your Mac that are the root cause for what you describe. As a baseline, I would do the following:
Run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. On your boot disk, choose First Aid, and verify/repair permissions.
Reboot your Mac. Immediately press and hold the shift key until a login screen appears. Enter your login name, your password, and before continuing, press and hold the shift key again, until your desktop reappears.
    Reboot normally.
What effect do the above have on the problems you mentioned?

  • Can't run some programs after system restore to remove virus

    Hi,
My duaghter's Toshiba had a nasty virus that pretended to be an antivirus software product, that snuck in, between the time her default Norton service expired and I had the time to install Trend.
Could not remove it using Trend, so upon advice from a friend, decided to do a windows system restore to a point prior to the infection. This worked successfully, and the virus is gone, but now she can't run some programs, I have tried to install Trend again, but that fails as it says that you have to uninstall Norton first. But I can't run Norton, or uninstall it, and some folders on C: are no longer accessible.
Should I do a complete Toshiba system restore (ie back tofactory settings? This seems a drastic measure, but the issue is beyond my meagre PC skills.
    Thanks,
    Graeme

    Thanks for your reply.
The main issue is that we cannot run the Norton Anitvirus that came prepackaged with the laptop, and we can't uninstall it either. If you try to perform either action, nothing happens.
However, when we try to install a new antivirus software, Trend, the install fails because it detects that Norton is installed, and indicates that we must uninstall Norton before we can complete the Trend installation. But we cannot unistall Norton for some reason.
I am getting my daughter to check what else doesn't work, but Microsoft Office works OK, and most of the games she installed seem to work. I just don't understand why Norton won't work now, and why we cannot uninstall it. I don't know if its due solely to the system restore, or some combination of events. The introductory 3 mont Norton licence has expired some time ago, but it should still let us uninstall. I have also tried to unistall through the Control panel, but nothing happens when I try that either.
Is there any way to force the uninstall of Norton? Or is a factory reset the only viable option now?
    Thanks,
    Graeme

  • How to remove viruses

Is there a virus remover for macs?

    Not really needed, but see:
Helpful Links Regarding Flashback Trojan and Virus Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
A link to a great User Tip about the trojan: Flashback Trojan User Tip.
To check for the trojan: Anti Flashback Trojan 2.0.4.
A Google search can reveal a variety of alternatives on how the remove the trojan should your computer get infected. This can get you started. Or the preferred method is to use Apple's protection tool: Flashback Malware Removal Tool 1.0.
Or, open Software Update. If you do not have the Apple protection software installed it will download and install it via Software Update. If no update appears that means you either already have it installed or it isn't needed for your system. The software is only available for Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion versions of OS X.
Also see Apple's article About Flashback malware.
For general anti-virus protection I only recommend using ClamXav.

  • Removing virus program

I bought an imac yesterday and migrated my wife's old ibook to the new machine. It brought over her Norton AntiVirus program. Now, people tell me that I don't need that program on a MAC (I'm a reformed Dell guy) and it didn't migrate properly anyway. It errors out when the computer boots up and can't perform its live-update correctly. Should I just remove it from the new mac and how do I do that? (On my old dell, I would go to the control panel and choose REMOVE PROGRAMS and just follow the prompts) Also, does the new mac protect against virsus automatically or do I need a program like Norton. Thank you.

Hello Steve and welcome to the forums as well as Macintosh in general.
Norton/Symantec anything isn't looked too highly around here because of numerous problems with their software and scare mongering in the press to generate sales.
Anti-virus may have some purpose on a Mac, to clean Windows files before passing them on to other Windows users. But so far we have been virus free and exploits in programs running as "root" aka "superuser" requiring a admin password to install have caused more trouble than the mythical viruses it's supposed to defend us from (Norton AV "rar" file exploit). Since Windows viruses don't affect Mac OS X, we might get them but they don't have any effect. However a few Excel Macro viruses could cause headaches, I personally don't run any Microsoft code on my machine and have been very happy.
Apple's Migration Assistant isn't nearly a seamless solution as they wish it could be, most likely because some programs install using admin password deep in Mac OS X itself (Norton AV), instead of just staying put in the Applications folder. Some applications don't follow Apple rules, some have copy protection schemes etc.
My suggestion is to backup any files, insert the installer disk #1 and hold c /reboot the machine. You'll boot from the disk. From the installer menu there is a selection called Disk Utility. Select the hard drive and Erase w/Zero option. This will completely wipe the drive and create a new bad sector map on the drive, insuring better writes and less data corruption. It takes a bit longer but worth it.
Once that's completed, quit and your back in the installer which you want to install Tiger, Developers Tools (can delete later, nifty stuff) the "Extras" and iLife 06' that came with the machine.
Once you've gone through the setup and network info, use Software Update from the Apple menu, next look in your Applications/Utilities folder for Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
Now you should be up, set up the machine and install Applications from original sources/installers if all possible (avoid Norton/root installers if possible). Most applications in Mac OS X consist of a icon in Applications folder which is actually a hidden "package" with everything the app needs inside. So copying this over is a breeze. Just drag and drop (see the little green plus sign)
There are a few Mac OS X applications that require running a installer to un-install the software. Likely copy protected programs or ones that do special installs outside the Applications folder.
If you hook up a 6 pin Firewire 400 cable to each Mac, boot the slave machine while holding "t" the drive will appear on the desktop of the other Mac. Makes it very easy to copy files and apps via drag and drop methods.
Now as you might know Apple is transitioning to Intel based processors, your new iMac is a "MacTel" as the old iBook is a G4 PPC based processor.
So applications based on PPC may run a bit slower on the iMacTel as a emulation software called "Rosetta" is being used. Some might not run well at all especially something that alters Mac OS X itself via a admin level "root" install.
A lot of applications are becoming "Universal Binaries" which will run well on either processor family. So be sure when buying software to check for the Universal icon etc.
I highly suggest getting a external drive and "cloning" (aka "ghosting") the boot drive once you got it peachy, on a Winblows box it's absolutely essential, on a Mac it can be avoided, but it's better if you do just in case. All you have to do is connect it and hold option for boot from it, or set it as a Startup Disk in Apple>System Preferences.
One can learn how to clone their boot drive over at Carbon Copy Cloner forums.
I wish I could help you more to enjoy your Mac, but I'm writing a book here.
I suggest you get a book like Mac OS X Tiger "The Missing Manual" to help you understand your new operating system. The more you use it the better your going to like it.
