Rename locks file?

I have a shortcut in the start menu that I want to rename with a powershell script, and that is working fine, but the shortcut then no longer works for regular users because the file is "locked." Not sure why launching a shortcut would care, but
this is a shortcut to an Autodesk product and they tend to do funny things. So, is there some trick to force the Rename-Item cmdlet to not lock this file? Or a way to force an unlock after the fact?

There is a "-force" parameter in the cmdlet "Rename-Item", if this can not work, please post the error information in detail to help us to troubleshoot.

oh boy ! I'd ask you if you knew what kind of files they were or where they came from, but I don't think you could help me a bunch. Try going to the Utilities folder and running Disk Utilities. If you want to empty the Trash and it won't empty, go to the finder and choose "secure Empty trash". Worse case scenario-you may have to reinstall Snow Leopard, but I don't know what else to suggest. If you have a DVD of Snow Leopard, boot up from that, and reinstall the OS. This will not touch the stuff you have on your Hard Drive, then you can update from 10.6 to 10.6.8, otherwise Onyx? Maybe those files are part of the OS which needs them to keep running. if you hold down the Shift key on reboot, you can reboot in Safe mode and maybe you can take the files out of the trash that way

Renaming movie file

I can't rename one of my movie files in itunes. Everytime I change the title through the info, it goes back to the original title. I checked to make sure that I had read/write privleges and I do. What should I do?

iTunes will rename the finder file name to match the "Name" column of the iTunes window. If you rename the file from the finder then play the file via iTuens it will again be renamed to match the "Name" column.
To rename items then do it from the iTunes window and not the finder. Also make suer the file is not locked.

DW CS3 locked files and FTP issues - cannot update pages

I just upgraded to Dreamweaver CS3 and now cant seem to
update any of my web pages. I can connect to the server etc and see
my files locally & remotely but when I try check out a file to
update it I get an error message saying 'index.html is a locked
file and can be viewed but not changed'. All I can do with it is
view it. When I try to unlock any files locally nothing happens????
This was not an issue before I upgraded.....I have checked my
FTP details with a version on my pc and there are exactly the
same.....does anyone know is this an issue with mac version of
Dreamweaver CS3?

done this*, then recreate the child pages (in DWCS3) using
FILE | New > Page
from Template, select the template and click CREATE.
The 6th problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced >
Recreate Site
Cache, and the six others can be fixed by just not doing

Vista problem with Dreamweaver locking files indiscriminately - I'm not alone

I've seen questions posed in the past about Vista locking files - and I am having the exact same problem, which I posted about a while ago. Today it happened to me again.
There appears to be no pattern as to why this happens. Was happening to me continually until a few weeks ago. Then it stopped without me taking any course of action (just putting up with the annoying bug is all I could do).
You just have to remember to save the file under a different name to ensure that you don't lose your original file. The original file does not appear in the File Manager window (after you close down DW, nor does it appear in the Trash bin - it's just gone).
Initially I thought it may be due to having the file open, checking it in Firefox and possibly FF taking over the file, so it gets locked by DW. Today, I only opened the file (no checking in a browser at all) made a minor correction and I was locked out of the file.
Co-incidentally, a few hours ago, I found a website via twitter where this seems to be a known issue, but no there appears to be no response from Adobe about this bug. http://www.sherylcanter.com/wordpress/2009/05/locked-vanishing-files-in-dreamweaver-and-in design/
Previously, I used to restart the pc and I'd lose the file altogether (as explained above). After reading the above website, I'm going to leave DW open for a while to see if it's true about the file 'unlocking itself'. Thankfully,, this time, I did backup the file just in case. In the past I'd lost a fair amount of work, that I'd had to recreate - very annoying !!
I thought I'd post up a graphic of the error messages - to see if others are seeing the same thing. This will need to be bought to the attention of the DW tech team, but not sure how they can address the issue as it is a difficult thing to reproduce on a consistent basis.
AN UPDATE; Checked for the file in Windows File manager - the index.html page is not listed in the sitefolder. Back to Dreamweaver, you can still see the locked file, do a refresh and the index.html file has disappeared.
I open index2.html (the resaved version of index,html), rename it to index.html and it allows me to do so this time round.
PS: At the same time I opened inner.html, made a change, no problems with the file locking.

I had tried to do a search using similar keywords when this started happening to me months ago - couldn't find anything at the time.
I even posted to a private forum where people should have known about this issue - but it was never responded to.
Will see if this fix works for me.... though I can't understand why it only does this occasionally - if someone needs to take control of the folder, surely it should be happening all the time.

Although Dreamweaver "reveals" and demonstrates it, I think that it's a deep-seated Vista permissions issue.
It's random and occurs on files I create from scratch and files I receive from others.
Full permissions for every single user and group on my PC doesn't work.
"Take ownership" by my account or Administrator or Administrators or System or Everyone or Authenticated Users doesn't work.
UAC deactivation doesn't work.
Command prompt to unset attributes (like read-only) says it ISN'T read-only, but the right-click properties show that it is.
Only this works so far.
Activate Vista's Administrator account (be sure to then set a password for it).
Log in as Administrator, and the issue no longer occurs.

Having permission to rename a file

each time i wish to rename a picture file a pop up says i have not got the acess/privelage to do so. i have to get info, unlock the sharing and permission lock and change 'everyone' to 'no access' then it allows me to name my file. I am the sole user to my mac and don't wish anyone else to use my folders/acess my accounts so how can i get rid of the'everyone' or make myself the sole access to naming files/folders without having to go through the above avery time ??? THANK YOU TO ANY HELP x also is there a way to rename all files in a folder at once with consecutive numbers ? can you just highlight all, type name of folder eg:cornwal 2010 and 1 after the first pic in folder so it renames all consecutively cornwall 2010 1 then 2 then 3 etc ?

Select the icon of your home folder in the sidebar of a Finder window, and open the Info dialog. After unlocking the dialog, eliminate all permissions except "Me: Read & Write" and "Everyone: No Access." From the action menu (with the gear icon at the bottom left corner of the dialog) select "Apply to enclosed items." Close the dialog and try again.

Is it created automatically by the Oracle Instance upon startup?

t is a lock file use by the oracle background process. When an oracle instance starts, one of the background processes locks the file, by creating it first. This prevents a new background process from getting the lock. You are not suppossed to delete it or rename it.

Can't rename MP4 files

I can't rename MP4 files. Warnings says that I don't have permission. I have no problem changing any of my other files that I want to rename.

Thanks but I've tried all of the common methods of renaming a locked file. Read/write permission doesn't unlock the file. This is happening only a particular set of mp 4 files that I down loaded from my road warrior dash cam.

Can you lock files in your Finder? I know you can lock the entire drive, but can you lock a specific one?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

ORA-27086: unable to lock file over NFS -- but it's NOT Netapp!

My 10.2 database crashed, and when it came back I got the following error:
ORA-00202: control file: '/local/opt/oracle/product/10.2.0/dbs/lkFOOBAR'
ORA-27086: unable to lock file - already in use
Linux-x86_64 Error: 11: Resource temporarily unavailable
This is a classic symptom of a Netapp problem, which likes to hold file locks open on NFS mounts. There is a standard procedure for clearing those locks; see, for instance, document 429912.1 on Metalink.
Unfortunately, my files are mounted on an Isilon, one of Netapp's twisted cousins. I can find no references to "isilon" on Metalink, and we are at a loss how to resolve this.
My sysadmin assures me that "there are no locks on the Isilon". But I know this cannot be the case, because if I do the following:
1. delete the lockfile /local/opt/oracle/product/10.2.0/dbs/lkFOOBAR, and then
2. move my controlfiles aside, and then copy them back into place,
then the database will mount. However, it will not open, because now all the datafiles have locks.
Is there anyone with experience in clearing NFS locks? I know this is more of a SA task than DBA, but I am sure my SA has overlooked something.

New information:
As stated above, I moved the controlfiles aside and then copied them back into place, like this:
mv control01.ctl control01-bak.ctl
cp control01-bak.ctl control01.ctlDid that for each controlfile, and then the database mounted.
But, after rebooting the machine, we discovered that all locks were back in place-- it looks like the system is locking the files on boot-up, and not letting them go. The lock is held by PID 1, which is init.

But nonetheless I lay my situation out here before you all in case someone else recognizes my problem before the server bursts into flames!

Try installing Perian or VLC. Some AVIs require a codec which simply isn't available for Mac OS X.

Actually it is possible to delete your own mood message updates but it requires an unsupported ”fix”.
You need to delete the keyval.db database file. In order to be on the safe side, it’s best just to rename this file, so you can always get it back if something went wrong.
You can find this file by entering %appdata%\skype in the Start Run/Search box. This will open the Skype User folder. Locate there the folder with your Skype Account name and the keyval.db file will be there. You must stop Skype from running on your computer before deleting/renaming this file. Next time you start Skype a new version of this file will be recreated and all mood message updates will be removed from the home page.
However, this guy didn't know I was on a Mac. I phoned Apple to see if they could show me how to get into the Skype file apparently on my computer, and they couldn't find it.
Anyone out there have any ideas? It doesn't seem as if I have any Skype files on my computer. If I need to make file changes via "the terminal," can someone tell me how to do this?

There's no such file in Mac OS X version of Skype. But there's a directory for your Skype user account in /Users/%current_user_name%/Library/Application Support/Skype/

The issue is fixed.
Our XML Publisher TMP is not defined, so it uses the APPLTMP used by concurrent manager. There is a folder xdofonts/<SID> in $APPLTMP. It contains the fonts used by XML publisher and on the of font file (.ttf) was 0 byte. We copied the ttf file from QA. And it started working.
Best practice is to define diffent TMP for concurrent managers and XML Publisher.
