Renaming again

I have problems with the "(batch)Rename photos" feature. Specifically, how can I delete (or change) parts of names in these simplified examples:
1) Suppose I have two photos, one named "John Brown Atlanta May" and one named "John Brown Louisville June", how can I delete "May" and "June" from the names?
2) And if I have two photos, one named "Corona egret" the other named "Bolsa heron", and I want to make the endings on both to say "egret", how do I do it?
Actually the examples would involve many, many photos. I'm sure this is elementary stuff, but I can't figure it out.
And if there is a tutorial on naming you can recommend I'd like to know of it . . .
Thanks,
Wendell

Well, LR has what to me is a pretty powerful renaming system. But it doesn't include things like the "*" or "?" in DOS renaming, nor does it include search-and-replace. I've never had any trouble naming things as I wanted them, but you're asking for some language-based renaming stuff I don't know how to do in LR, or anywhere else for that matter. I'm sure some of the dedicated renaming tools can do it, as can perl or the command-line renaming tools.

  • Renaming Music Files

How does one rename a music file on a mac? In a folder, can I click to let the artist, album, track info show up? On a PC, one could edit the tags and rename a music file by right click > properties and also sort the files by album info, artist name, track, genre, etc. info. How is this achieved on a mac?
When I edit my music tags in itunes, it seems to be only temporary because once I delete the file from itunes and re-add it, the file name and info is the same as before and needs to be edited again.
    Thanks for the help.

Hi canht. Renaming in iTunes is the right way to do it. Ditto trashing and rearranging. To do it otherwise, in Finder for eg, can mess up your iTunes library. Of course you will have to rename again if you trash something and put it back. Trashing it trashes its name as well as the song.
To change details in iTunes, click on the track, hit ⌘ I, click the info tab and edit accordingly. For all the tracks in an album if you want to add the album name/artist/genre for eg, click on one track, hit ⌘ A, then info etc. You will get a box asking if you want to edit multiple items. Hit yes or OK. Good to go.
    Have fun!

  • Wav Files renamed... now they are UNIX EXECUTABLE FILES

    Hello everybody!
I ran a script in terminal to batch rename something like 2K+ .wav files following an .csv list.
The list contained 2 columns, A: the original name and B: the new desired name.
for the ones interested the script is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1886783&tstart=0
I ended up having the same 2k+ wav files perfectly renamed but the finder sees them as UNIX EXECUTABLE FILES.
Now all my audio apps can open them fine but the thing is that I need them to be listed as audio files in finder so I can preview them with QuickLook in the finder.
Anyone knows how to do this?
Renaming again using a different app (like Automator) did not work, file types and creator codes are blank. I have a utility that changes them but I don't know wich is the correct filetype and creator code....
Maybe you can shed some light on this issue....
Solved it myself. stripped the file of its extension. then replaced the extension.... worked!
    Thanks!

  • File renaming: unwanted suffix after sequence number

    Hi all,
I am encountering some issues when renaming my files to sequence them.
My renaming template is: Custom Text_Sequence Number (3 digits)
Let's say my Custom Text is "20100702_LR", Lightroom shows me that the file name should be "20100702_LR_001.nef" and so on.
However, for some reason, sometimes Lightroom randomly assigns "-1" after the file name, such as "201007_LR_002-1.nef".
It doesn't seem to follow any rule. Sometimes that unwanted "-1" suffix is appended to the file name, sometimes it isn't.
Has this happened to anyone before? Is there an explanation and a solution to this problem?
Thank you in advance for your precious help.

no conflict but a bug. It happens (in my case and some others reported it also, do a search on this forum) if you renamed during import, deleted some files after import in a selection proces and renamed/renumbered again with the same text/preset etc. It worked normal in LR2.x now it doesn't anymore.
Workaround: rename to some bogus name and rename again with the preset name you it want it to have.

  • Rename Photos in Gallery - C5

When I try to rename photo in gallery, if I use the upper case when I confirm the operation the phone save the name but in lower case.
If I try to rename again the same photo, if I type in Upper case the same text the phone show me that there is another file with the same name.
With my old nokia N70 I didn't had this problem.
    Thanks.

Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again?
You will not lose any data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches.

  • Is there a way to reverse batch renaming in Bridge?

Unfortunately I accidently renamed files with a "." in the file rename. This caused all my images to have an odd file type which then makes them unreadable. Help!!! Any suggestions of what to do?

Run the batch renaming again with the correct filename or extension on all those file on which you ran the batch renaming again.

  • Folder renaming

I've been trying to rename some folders in LR and keep getting the message "Could not rename. An unknown error occurred." Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I am also getting this problem. One thing I did figure out is for instance if my folder was this:
    2007
    ---11
    ------31_Halloween
And I'm trying to change Halloween, I would get that error. However, if I click rename again and then delete the entire word Halloween and type it again all in lowercase, it would work. I have to remove the entire "offending" word I guess?
    What is going on? Bug?

  • Folder rename bug

When I try to rename a folder, just changing the case from upper to lower I get an error.
    Example:
Original folder name: "2008-05-31_Linley VAlley hike"
New folder name: "2008-05-31_Linley Valley hike"
I get the warning message "Could not rename. An unknown error occurred."
    LR 1.41 Vista

Because Windows does not have case-sensitive file or directory names, but allows you to save with any combination of cases, the various versions of a file name that differ only in case are treated internally as identical. FIle.pdf and fiLE.pDf refer to the same file. When you rename a file, it has to be named something different, so it has to differ in some way other than case. In your case, maybe change the folder name slightly when you rename it, then rename again to get it where you want it to be.
E.g., first change "2008-05-31_Linley VAlley hike" to "2008-05-31_Linley Valley hike-x" and then change that to "2008-05-31_Linley Valley hike".

  • Renaming Finder´s tracks from iTunes

    Situation:
I have a folder in Finder with all my songs but these are not renamed properly... it came like this, when i burned the CD into my hard disk:
    Example:
    "09-jump" (which means - Track: nº9 / Title: Jump / Author: Madonna)
    Question:
After doing a "import folder" into iTunes, i renamed all my 450 tracks in the Song-column and in the Author-column, but that didnt change my original files inside Finder... I do not want to go trought renaming again, so how do i save time and replace the renamed tracks from iTunes into the Finder folder? (i´ve tried draging it out in order to do a "replace" action, but the selected tracks wont move outside iTunes).

Look at Edit > Preferences > Advanced and see if you have checked the box for "Keep iTunes Media Folder organized." If so, iTunes will "organize" the file to its new location.

  • Duplicating a Sequence renames all clips

All of a sudden, after months of stable operations, when I duplicate a sequence, all the clips in the timeline get their names changed to the name of the new sequence. Every time I rename the sequence, the clips get renamed again to match the sequence name.
Also, Find Frame (f) and shift-f don't work. Shift-f highlights the new sequence in the Bin.
    These don't fix it:
    trashing prefs
    relaunching the app
    rebooting the computer
    repairing permissions
    running Disk Warrior
I suppose re-installing the app is next, but a friend just told me that he got the same thing, and reinstalling didn't fix it for him.
    Any ideas?

I found a half-*** workaround: Create new sequence. Copy all from old sequence. Paste into new sequence. This solved the problem of clip renaming on V2, but not V1 .
Also, when I changed the name from Untitled Sequence to >whatever<, it stealthily changed it's name - several minutes later - to the same as the original sequence that the footage was copied from.
I changed the name again, which stuck for a few minutes, but then later, it changed it's name back to the original sequence again!
This is probably the oddest bug I've yet encountered in FCP. I opened other projects, and am not getting the same behavior. So, I'm concluding this has something to do with the footage, or a combination of sequence settings.
In this case all the footage was ripped (legally) using MPEGStreamclip from DVDs to ProResHQ, and put into a 720x480 Sequence in FCP using the ProResHQ compressor.
Another curiosity is that I get the red timeline bar using Safe RT which should not be the case, since the footage codec matches the sequence settings.

  • Why can I not rename an event in iphoto?  It keeps reverting to "untitled event!"

Every time I upload photos to iphoto and it creates a new event, I am somehow unable to rename that event.  I double click and delete the default label, "untitled event" and even as I type the new name it will immediately revert to say "untitled event."  This sometimes happens even at the same time as I type, like the computer and my own typing are fighting against each other.

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try renaming again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Quandary with batch rename  of photos

This seems like it ought to be a simple task, but I'm stumped. I've got a couple hundred photos in an Event that I want to rename with a title + number. This part is easy using iPhoto's "Batch Change".
But then some time later, I need to be able to add more photos to that Event and rename them with the same scheme. The problem is that the Batch Change doesn't let me specify what number I want the new photos to start at. It just starts them at 1 so I end up with duplicate titles within the event. Is there some clever way to do this that I haven't found yet?
The Batch Change feature does allow for renaming the Title to match the Filename, but I've read that messing about in the Finder (to actually rename the files themselves) is a big NO-NO, so I don't think I want to go that route. But I haven't been able to find anything within Automator or any plug-ins that will allow for this changing of the photo title while specifying a starting index number.
Hoping someone can point me to a way to do this. Thanks.

I thought I'd follow up here in case others run into this. It turns out that you can achieve this as long as you sort it properly before the rename. An easy way to do this is to rename the newly added photos to something alphabetically after the set that is already in the event. Then just sort by title, Select All in the Event and do the batch rename again. All the original photos will retain their original titles (including the appended number) and the new ones will get new names that begin numerically after those.
It would still be way better if the batch change just let you specify the number you want to start with.

  • Rename PC - global controller

    hi there,
    need help please.
we have cloned server which act as Global controller. since we need to run those server together, we need to rename one of those.
the problem is, we can't just rename it like ordinary pc. we tried, but then the server can't be logged in.
how to rename this kind of server (PC)?
    the server specification:
    windows server 2008 enterprise SP2, 32 bit.
the server role is forest domain.
    thanks in advance

    Hello,
hopefully this doesn't mean Domain controller "we have cloned server which act as Global controller"???
A domain controller CAN NEVER be cloned and use just with renaming again!!!
Every machine in a Windows domain MUST have a unique SID, which requires that SYSPREP is used to clone/image machines for easier installation.
So if you have cloned a domain controller do NEVER start this one on the same network as the original installed machine and delete that server immediately.
YOU WILL RUN INTO MULTIPLE PROBLEMS working this way!!!
To have the recommended 2 DC/DNS/GC per domain install a second server, join it to the domain and then promote it to DC in an existing domain. Also make it DNS/GC during installation. Assure to use ONLY the existing DC/DNS server on the NIC as preferred
DNS server and NONE else. That can be changed later on after the new server has replicated from the existing DC.

If you only have one iMac, then some Mac software quirk is causing its software to think there's already a like-named Mac on your network. As Pondini suggests, you can rename it, but that won't guarantee that it will be renamed again in the future. I had such a problem a long time ago (perhaps with OS X 10.4). I lived with it until it went away after I upgraded to the next major OS X release.
By the way, if (as suggested by your system details) you're really running OS X 10.5.2, unless you have a good reason to stay with that, you should consider installing the free updater to 10.5.8 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866). There's a slight chance it will fix that renaming problem.
