Render time reduced 88%. What did I do, uh, right?

I had a 30 minute PP CS4 project with tons of graphics (rendered AE templates to H.264 movies, movie backgrounds, psd's, etc.), 720p60 footage throughout, music and sfx. It resembled closely the last 30 minute DVD I did, but with more graphical stuff.
The last MPEG2-DVD export took 17 hours (my system is posted in my profile). This one took only two hours and it came out well (it's an educational DVD). The only difference I can think of is that this time I rendered the entire timeline for preview whereas last time I did not. The AME export settings were identical.
Soooo, have I stumbled across a great workflow step (always render before exporting) or is this technically impossible and I'm overlooking something?
Thanks, everyone.

Hiya,
dont know if this would help time-wise...etc....but I recently put an asset into a timeline and edited. Before I put the asset in the timeline I looked at what it actually WAS...in gspot and mediainfo....and it was a YUV 420 asset ..
heres what the mediainfo said
heres the choice I made for the project renderer...
Like I said, I dont know if it makes a diff for sure ( like some kinda lab tests etc ) ...but my gut feeling is that if I match the renderer with the asset ....I'm not gonna be losing any "time" or quality etc from either using the rendered files or not ....

  • Render times: what is expected?

    Hello,
I recently went to render a project, and it estimated that it would take 44 hours to complete. That is, shall we say, less than ideal.
    Some specs about my machine:
    MacBook Pro
    2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
    The Disk Cache:
LaCie USB3 External SSD (200 GB allocated for cache)
    Details about my AE project:
    AE version: CS6
    3:15 (3 minutes 15 seconds) duration
    1920 x 1080 (1080p) resolution
    Ray-traced 3D environment
    17 light layers
    3 cameras
All other layers are either shapes, solids, pictures, or pre-comps
I'm trying to render out to h.264 format. It seems to me that 40+ hours is extremely excessive for a 3:15 long video, but I'm not positive that's the case. I'd love to hear thoughts back on expectations and how I can reduce this time (either through settings or better hardware).
    Thank you!

rhannebaum wrote:I chose H.264 because it seemed the most common HD video output, and I didn't want to use QuickTime (.mov) because the resultant .mov files were huge. Very hard to transfer around after the fact.
Oh, I was pretty sure that was your reasoning.
Yes, the resulting file will be huge (unless you're rendering to an image sequence in which case the mass of resulting files will be huge ) . You then take that file (or image sequence) into Premiere or the Adobe Media Encoder to create your easy-to-transfer file - in your case, h.264 is probably your best bet. But, for the reasons I enumerated, you do not want to do the h.264 right out of AE.
There are other options to a lossless Quicktime or an image sequence (although the crashing rescue alone is worth the image sequence option). Where I work we use the Cineform codec from GoPro. It's free and it's close enough to lossless for our workflow, but the file size is significatly smaller. Another great choice is the DNxHD codec which is free from Avid. It has the same benefits as the Cineform codec.
    rhannebaum wrote:
Are image sequences simple to import into Premiere? Also, is Media Encoder faster at rendering than AE? I know the obvious benefit is that I can keep working in AE while a comp renders in Media Encoder, but not sure beyond that what ME's value is.
Image sequences are as easy to import into Premiere as any other video format. It's great!
Media Encoder is not faster than AE - and, in some cases (as others have mentioned), it can be much slower. However, it does a much better job of encoding H.264. The quality is higher for the same data rate. That (among other reasons) is why, in the new version of AE CC, the H.264 render option has been deprecated.
For your workflow, I would not suggest sending your AE comp to the AME; render a lossless (or nearly lossless) file out of AE and then use the Adobe Media Encoder to create your final deliverable.
One cool thing about the Adobe Media Encoder is that you can set up watch folders so that any time an uncompressed file lands in that folder, it gets encoded per your specified settings.
    rhannebaum wrote:
Is Cinema4D a plugin native to AE CC? I'm afraid my upgrade options are limited to what my company approves, but if there is a legit improvement in render times in CC over CS6, that may seriously persuade them...
Cinema4D is the industry standard 3d animation software for creating motion graphics. It's also got some good scuplting, modeling, and character animation tools and is fast becoming one of the big players in all aspects of 3d animation. One of the reasons for its rapid growth (besides the fact that its easier to learn than its competition) is that it integrates very well with After Effects.
Bundled with (and integrated with) AE CC, you get a lite version of C4D. It doesn't have nearly the power of the full program, but it's worlds better than messing with the 3d ray-traced stuff and gives you a lot more tools to work with.
Bottom line: if your company is going to want you to do more 3d stuff, you really need to get into a plugin like Element, 3d Invigorator, or ShapeShifter. They render much faster.
And, if they really want you to do some great 3d, they'll need to get a full-fledged 3d program for you (and the requisite training). Upgrading to the CC version of AE is a great halfway step though.

  • Reducing Render TIme

    Hi All,
My render times for a 10 minute clip are getting ridiculous ... about an hour.
I was thinking, what if i change the sequence settings in some way so as to reduce render time between edits? All i want to do at this stage of the game is get a rough idea of how my edits work.
Once i'm all done i can just reset the sequence settings to where i want them and do a final render prior to export.
Any ideas of good, quick, sequence settings to get this process moving along?
    Paul

Your sequence settings should be set to "lower", not none... might have a problem set to none with field order.
Sounds like your compositing is causing the render times, and the ONLY fix here is to quit compositing. (not a good idea of course) or get thee to a faster mac... Rendering times in any codec or sequence setting are heavily dependant on CPU speed. The faster the machine, the faster the render. You want a lower quality render for editorial? you can change that in the render settings... just don't forget to re render in high quality in the end of course.

  • I am a geezer. My PC cannot load Super Fetch at boot time. What did I delete in my tidy, tidy, tidy?

    Hi Gang,
OK, I have been sick for sixteen years, about as long as the Target hacker has been alive. I will be 67 in a few weeks. My PC tells me it cannot load SuperFetch at boot time. What did I clobber? I saved the message as offered.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Could you please post the complete event log
here? Was this error message  related with superfetch service? The error message here seems to be mostly associated with .Net framework.
Few more questions here, what actions had been taken before the error occurred? Have you checked if any viruses attacked? In addition, please take a try with system file checker.(More infor
    for SFC).
Regarding SuperFetch, it caches data to RAM so that it can be immediately available to your application. Sometimes this can affect the performance of certain applications. It tends to not work
well with gaming, but can improve performance with business apps. And this service is dependent on the following system components:
    File Information FS MiniFilter
    FltMgr
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    DCOM Server Process Launcher
    RPC Endpoint Mapper
    More information, please check
    superfetch in:
Threats and Countermeasures Guide: System Services
To see if superfetch is disabled or not, please check the steps below:
    1. Click the Start orb and type Regedit in the Start Search area.
    2. Open the Registry Editor.
    3. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
        then SYSTEM
        then CurrentControlSet
        then Control
        then Session Manager
        then MemoryManagement
        then click PrefetchParameters
    4. On the right side, double-click on EnableSuperfetch
    5. Check the value of it, it is set to
    3 by default on win7:
    Values:
    0 to disable Superfetch
1 to enable prefetching when program is launched
    2 to enable boot prefetching
3 to enable prefectching of everything
Hit OK then Close RegEdit. "
Then goto the services MSC ("windows key + r" or just "windows key" and type
services.msc). Scroll down to Superfetch and now should start. Double click it and change to automatic, then attempt to start again.
If we fail to start this service, I suggest we
export following keys from the computer on Which Windows 7 works fine, and then import to your computer to repair this service. On the good win7 PC:
    Navigate to :
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\SysMain
    Right click on the
SysMain, choose export, and then move the export file on the problematic PC, double click the file.
    Hope this helps,
    Best regards
    Michael

are you using sample base instruments in those projects a lot using exs or kontakt? when paths to samples get messed up for some reason it can result in along waiting times each time a project is loaded.
lately my kontakt samples get loaded without any sign of activity. if it is a large orchestral score i see a dead screen for quite a while before suddenly everything pops up and is ready to work with. i recall seeing progress bars or similar things in the past though...
repair permissions and defragging (idefrag) may help as well.
btw. i can drink as much coffee as i want late at night, even five minutes later i can sleep well. seems i am immune. but right now i am also having plenty of hardware issues to deal with so that's a good thing i guess...!

  • Reduced Render Times i7

Working a i7 920, 12 gb ram, sATA drives, Win 7 with Premiere Pro 1.5.
    Render time: 19 mins.
P4 2.66, 1 gb ram, ide, XP Pro with Premiere Pro 1.5
    Render time: 3 hours.
    Pretty cool.
    Probabaly, with CS4 even faster.

I'm not exactly sure how much functionality
I will have working with Pro 1.5 in Win 7.
I took an old program I had and re-rendered it to come up with the the above stated numbers.
Who knows what will happen when I try to "mess" with the program.
    Thanks for all your help.

  • Unreasonable render times - What's wrong?

I have an iMac with the i7 processor, 12 Gig of memory and the high end graphics card.
I have a 20 SECOND video I am sending out to render for an AppleTV (second Gen/720) device. Thus far, it has taken over 10 minutes and it is less than 1/4 rendered. Seriously? FinalCutPro X didn't take this long to "render" it to 442 to view it full quality in the editor.
This can not be right. I spent $2500 on this "fireball" and this is the best I can do with a 20 second video? I am going to be working on full length films and 20 minute long videos. If this render time is standard, I will be waiting for days to render a film to just an AppleTV format.
This simply can not be right. How do I tell what's clogging this up?

This simply can not be right. How do I tell what's clogging this up?
    no, not standard.
on my ol' MacMini C2D/8GB a Project gets exported within 'real time'.
    but ....
render-time is determined by two factors:
    • is your 'system set-up' ok? you have blazing fast hardware, but is the rest in perfect/intended shape? all apps on intended location? all data in intended location? ... hard to tell from remote. a very nice common mistake for example is, to install an 'OS partition' on the internal hard-drive (for whatever reason ...) - if this partition is too small, doesn't offer enough room for the OS and apps to 'breath', esp. encoding instantly needs hours ... there're many other 'mistakes' optional ....
    • complexiity of Project: a multi-layerd timeline with -zillions of effects, color corrections etc etc needs some rendertime - for my hobbyist's projects (max two tracks, some re-timing for slowmos, custom made titles/transitions) this usually happens in the background. I'm actually helping someone with a 4min 'music video' on an i5 Mac, 4-7layered multicam clips, and even without proxies we happily work in real-time.
    hard to tell from remote.
you like to add a full screen screenshot of your Project/FCPX?

  • Reducing Final Render Times

What are the most cost effective solutions to improving render time?
    Robert Land

FCP under stress can utilize up to ~2.5GB of ram. If there is not enough ram to fulfill the demand, OSX will protect itself by reserving RAM so will start paging memory out to the hard drive (aka virtual ram).
My old Ti 1ghz Powerbook with 1GB of ram, will show 250mb of free ram even when the poor processor is pegged at redline.
To gauge your memory demands, in the Activity Monitor, look at System Memory> Page Ins/ Outs. If you aren't paging out, more ram is not going to help. This is because you are not running up against a limit and forcing the system to send bits from physical RAM to the hard drive for temporary storage. This temp storage (virtual ram) is an order of magnitude or two slower than keeping things in physical ram and will cause a performance slowdown.
By the way, the VM size is how much of your system disk is being reserved for use as virtual memory. This number can be startling large and is why you DO NOT want to fill things up. The Powerbook I'm writing this on currently has a VM of 7.2 GB on a 80 GB hard drive. (the size of the VM file will vary with the number and demands of the programs you have open.) As it stands it is taking something close to 10% of the drive. This is why I'd suggest keeping 20% free on a system drive.
    cheers,

I was setting up my IPod Nano7 for the first time and purchased 3 songs.  When I went to play it on my IPod the screen said "No Music".  What did I do wrong?

We are going through same thing and looks like alot of other people also. Seems to me Apple would have invalid email instead of us loosing the gift card all together. Very irratating. Good Luck.

  • Much longer render time for a few small changes?

I bought a new Macbook pro last week with a 2.4 ghz intel i5 processor and 8 GB of ram. I got Adobe premiere pro yesterday and I made a video which combined taking footage shot from my flip video camera and audio commentary that I recorded across the full video. The video was rendered with the setting H.264 and the preset Youtube widescreen HD, the final video was about an 800 MB .mp4 file. It took about 30-40 minutes to render.
Today, I added a 17 minute mp3 file for background music, which was 17 mb. I also added 6 images and 2 titles which overlay the video at different points. The only other thing I added along with these two was a 16 second mov file which serves as an intro video to my series. With these 3 (what I consider to be fairly small) changes, my render time has jumped dramatically. With the same export settings, I see the render time build and build until it reaches 4+ hours and I decide to stop. I've tried a couple different formats, but I'm not sure what else to do. I feel that 8gb should be plenty to render a video like this fairly quickly (like I did yesterday) and I'm not sure why it's taking so long compared to yesterday. Is this normal? Any help to guide me with reducing render times would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The Export time will differ by what one is Exporting from and what they are Exporting to. In this case, the "to" has not changed.
    What has changed?
Well, the stills for one. What is the format and what are the pixel x pixel dimensions of those?
The addition of the MOV is another place to look. What is the CODEC inside that MOV "wrapper?" Having to decode via the CODEC can impact the Export time.
The new Audio has changed. What is the format/CODEC of that music file?
Those are the first thoughts that I have on this, and good luck,
    Hunt

  • What did you think of iMovie '11?

I am thinking about buying a new mac but I'm only really concerned about the movie making software. I have used iMovie a few years ago and I liked it for the most part but I want some personal feedback on it. What did you think of the new software? What has changed in the last few years? Anything important that I should know?

    Hi
If You last used iMovie HD6 then the change is severe - it's a compleately new tool.
If iMovie'08 or 09 the difference is not that great.
    Some I listed as
    *iMovie 09 (v8) 8.0.6 (jan 2009)*
    • Far better than iMovie 08 but still far from good.
    • Pic in pic, green screen but basic
    • Image stabilization - fairly good for amateur use
    • Speed-up/down and reverse
    • Bl/W, Old age etc
    • Still - No Continous TimeLine
    • NO - Possibilities to enhanze by use of thirdpart Plug-ins (all investments lost)
    • NO - Playback via Camera/FW - and this prevents 100% safteybackups and the use of an extra TV/Monitor as real-time Quality control (as in iM 1 to HD6)
Aimed at - speed editing small video projects to be presented on the Internet - NOT DVDs
    *iMovie 11 (v9) 9.0.x*
    • Will be - Intel Only
    • Snow Leopard minimum Mac OS X.6.3
    YES
    • Advanced view including a true TimeLine ? Yes but rudimentary (very basic)
    • True Storyboard - where You even can write and prepare space for lacking material that needs to be obtained or re-shoot. YES
    • Better wave-form presentation of audio and audio tools - Rubberband - Yes
    • Trailer creating tool
    • ”Faces” as in iPhoto - NO - but this finds if there are people in some video-clips
    • Better audio tools. Equalizer and a background audio reducer
    • More Camera support eg 24fps
    NO
    • not 64-bit only
    • The Playback to Camera via FW - returns ? NO
    • Full Quality to iDVD - NO - still only half - every second line
    • Plug-in facility ? - NO
    • No free text tool
    • Tool to mask an identity eg band over face or unsharp area. - NO (could be obtained via Plug-ins in iM HD6 and earlier)
    • Animation tool - To point on interesting object/player - NO animations refere to a totally different
thing connected to Storyboard and insert of ”dummy animations” while building a movie
