Repaired Permissions after iPhoto install

I just upgraded my wife's computer from iPhoto 4 to iPhoto 5.0.1. and then ran Disk Utility's Repair Permissions which I do before and after installs.
This time there was a very, very lengthy list of repaired permissions. Unfortunately I didn't save that list (or if they are saved I don't know where to find them) to quote it here.
At any rate, is this "normal" to have such a lengthy list after upgrading an Apple application?
Thanks for any info.

Hi Norm!
Rerun "Repair Permissions" to see if you get the same results.
There are some Spurious Permissions Errors that can be ignored.
Are these the ones you are seeing?

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • HT4710 when i try to go into iphoto i get a message To examine and repair permissions, quit iPhoto. Press the Command and Option keys while you open iPhoto, and select "Examine and repair iPhoto Library file permissions."

in iphoto i get the shreen with just thr download circle and nothing happens. i click on on edit and get "

    it still does not work

Have you tried doing what it says?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Can I always repair permissions from the install disc, even after updates?

Does anyone know if I can always repair permissions properly from my original install disc that came with my iMac thats 10.4.1. I now am 10.4.3 and was wondering if things change with every update rendering the install disc out of date for permission repair.
I read some where on the internet that after you update from the original OS you should just use disc utility. I know nothing about this sort of thing, any help on this and the types of utilities I might need would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe this is dumb, but what do you mean by don't believe the hype on permissions repair.
are you talking about the posting I read about not being able to continuously update and boot from the original OS disks, or that repairing permissions is overated as far as system maintanence.
I get a lot of conflicting advise on system maintanence. Thats why I ask this. I'm fairly new to macs and how to keep them going problem free.
    by the way,...
    thanks for the replies guys
Yes, he can do the same with overkill third-party
utilities that aren't on a bootable disc for which
he's already paid. (And is Disk Utility so hard to
use that we need third-party utilies with this
    function?)
Hmm. What if he specifically needs a bootable disc
that can repair permissions? Can't assume his
specific needs and environment when he hasn't
    detailed them.

  • Strange problems: Need to repair permissions after new installation

Hello, we installed a PowerMac G5, which is running as a web server (4D). After we installed the OS X (10.4.9/PPC) and a few days running the machine did have problems starting up as usual. The machine did hang when trying to start up.
We could startup from an external CD. Apple's disk utility reported thousands of files needed to be repaired. We repaired all of the permissions and had the startup problem again. We switched to another computer, a Mac mini (G4). The same problem (again repaired tons of permissions).
We also used Apple's Hardware Check Disk. Nothing found! Alsoft's Disk Warrior only show us a few files which had the wrong encoding.
The web server and its data are running/stored on a different volume (second partition).
We totally do have three computers with the same problems. We are running 4th Dimension, Retrospect 6.x, Share Points, Pure FTP and Mac OS X 10.4.9. We are running several web servers with the same configuration except another Mac OS X version (e.g. 10.3.9)
Does anybody know this problem and how to solve?

  • Repairing permissions after 10.5.8 update extreme oops maybe???

Ok I understand that there is still the issue of Repairing permissions regarding hard code links no big deal. Apple still has not fixed this in this update.
The problem that I have at the moment is understanding why the dbase is not updated properly it appears.
After applying the update to two separate machines both intel based and running Repair permissions through Disk Utility which is what I always do after any os update, there were some very strange oddities that pertains to core files and even after reboots and rechecking seferal times there is no change.
Someone at Apple messed up I think and did not update the permissions dbase during or after the update. I also used the Combo updater versus the smaller regular update as I always do to to avoid some intermittent occasional install problems some tend to see when using the smaller updaters.
Anyone else seeing this and how big of an issue is it to have it show for core files permissiona "should be ?--------- ," ??

    Permissions repair complete

Yea it is strange, I did not have the time on the two operating systems to do a proper backup so I can not go back as you did.
I did reapply the delta update though over the top of one of the Combos and although I ended up with less apparently than with the original combo update there were still several.
One thing I did do was to go to the file level of this one which now reads "System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CarbonC ore.framework/Versions/A/_CodeSignature/CodeResources", should be ?--------- , they are ---------
When inspecting that one the in the info window it now shows no more system or wheel and only everyone with the item marked as no access.
Considering that this is within the folder now called "_CodeSignature" and the root folder above this folder which is "A" has a CodeResources file inside it which has all the normal permissions set properly. I am wondering if this is something that was actually moved to this new folder instead of deleted and that the permissions tool may be looking at this file as it would with the parent folder if that makes sense. If this is part of the security updates portion why wouldn't Apple just remove it or is there something else going on that I am missing.
On the other side to note is that all of the files that are giving this error with permissions in the core files are all inside a folder called "_CodeSignature".
This may actually be nothing to worry about as it may be a way for the security patches to work properly to ensure the corrected resources are in place, If so though why are they not getting deleted with the updates as one would expect and why would this keep reappearing constantly and are these files in the "_CodeSignature" folders actually able to be trashed manually if Apple doesn't need them there and if they do then why are they set for no access?
    Confusion is a wonderment uh?

  • Can't repair permissions in iPhoto 9.6

Upgraded to iPhoto 9.6.  On opening get message: "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto."  When I click UPGRADE, I am "invited" to repair permissions of this library.  When I select REPAIR, I am informed that "iPhoto was unable to repair permissions for the library."  When I use command-option open iPhoto is First Aid mode, I have tried "Repair Permissions", "Repair Database", and "Rebuild Database" --- they all generate the same message, that "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto".  When I click UPGRADE, I loop back to the same earlier alert that the permissions need to be repaired.  Can't repair the permissions.  Can't repair or rebuild the database.  Suggestions?  PLEASE?
    -sdr

    What version of iPhoto did you have prior to upgrading to 9.6?  If it was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on the library and then open it with iPhoto 9.6.  Otherwise try the following;
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Repairing Permissions after Java Update

I installed the latest Java update as prompted by Software Update. Then I repaired permissions and am getting the same lengthy log every time even though it states "Permissions repair complete":
    "Group differs on "Library/Application Support/iLifeMediaBrowser/Plug-Ins/iLMBiPhotoPlugin.ilmbplugin/Contents/Resourc es/da.lproj", should be 80, group is 0.
    Repaired.....etc, etc."
There are at least 25 - 30 of those; plus there are quite a few on the Java VM framework.
Is this anything to worry about?

Yes, everybody's getting them. As long as the repair states "Permissions repair complete", you're good to go.

  • Repair permissions always via install dvd?

Seems that always when I repair permissions (I do it once a week and with every major install) there are the same permissions that are "wrong" every time. And the list seems to get longer.
I always repair just by starting Disk Utility and repairing - without booting from the install dvd. Is that wrong? Should I really do the repair permissions always from the dvd? (Like the app seems to suggest.)
Is there any use doing the task just from the active system or is it really useless?
Please tell me the "most pro way of cleaning up my system".
And as former PC Windows user - why is there no "Find disk errors" type of app? Does Repair Permissions repair disk errors as well?
    Thanks for advice!

    Hello-
    I don't claim to be a 'tech expert' but my understandings seem to work for me. If I'm wrong, I'd be just as interested in other opinions as yourself, so FWIW;
Seems that always when I repair permissions (I do it
once a week and with every major install) there are
the same permissions that are "wrong" every time. And
the list seems to get longer.
The list you see doesn't mean that anything was wrong, just set to something other than what the original permissions called for. If there is a problem you will usually get a red listing indicating a failure of some sort. Although the value of arbitrarily repairing once a week if no OS/app installs or upgrades is questioned by many, the consenus opinion seems to be "it can't hurt".
I always repair just by starting Disk Utility and
repairing - without booting from the install dvd. Is
that wrong? Should I really do the repair permissions
always from the dvd? (Like the app seems to
    suggest.)
As I understand it, you are doing the right thing. Some rather knowledgeable folks actually say this is the 'better' way because your version of the OS has most likely been updated to something newer than what's on the Install CD. IOW, you should Repair Disk Permissions based on the same OS version you are repairing.
Please tell me the "most pro way of cleaning up my
    system".
There really isn't that much that needs to be done other than following the suggested 'proactive' approach pertaining to perm. repair, standard cache maintenance (if you run your system 24/7 it's automatic, or you can run the routines manually if your comfortable with Terminal. Otherwise, a utility like OnyX -free- is readily available.)
As long as you aren't constantly downloading, installing & removing every piece of junk you can get your mouse on you should be OK.
And as former PC Windows user - why is there no "Find
disk errors" type of app? Does Repair Permissions
    repair disk errors as well?
Repair Perms doesn't, but the OS does a much better job than Windows, which needs such a utility because it creates the errors in the first place. Disk Utility does include a Repair Disk function which requires starting up from a different boot disk, but it doesn't need to be used as a matter of 'routine' maintenance.

  • Plz help...problem w/ verify/repair permissions after software update

    Hi,
I just ran the software update from the Mac menu and wanted to verify/repair permissions afterwards. First I used Onyx and when it was executing, the system would not respond after a couple of minutes. So then I tried Disk Utility and I get a message saying "Disk Utility internal error: Disk Utility has losts its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." And I did, and the same message appears.
    What else can I do?
    Thanks.
    PowerBook G4 15   Mac OS X (10.3.6)

Have just done software download - gone to repair permissions and have got same message. Running on 10.3.9. Anyone any ideas as to what is going on here. Did NOT run repair permissions before the update (Yes I know I should have done). Could this be a factor. There are a number of other threads on this forum concerning this exact problem - but so far have found no explanation or solutions.
Disk varified and reported OK. Mac seems to be operating OK. How does Disk utility "link" to Disk Management Tool?
    Any help much appreciated.

  • Repair Disk & Repair Permissions Using Leopard Install Disk NOT WORKING!!

I start up from my Leopard disk and click the Mac OS Partition in disk utility and two things go wrong...
Firstly, when I click either verify or repair permissions the progress bar stays as the moving angled lines forever (haven't tried leaving it for more than five minutes though).
Secondly, when I verify my disk it says everything appears to be okay, but when I try and repair the disk it says "The disk Macintosh HD cannot be unmounted" so I am unable to repair my disk. Are these fixable issues or is it a Leopard thing?

UPDATE: I let Repair Permissions run for a good twenty minutes and it worked, just took a long time, this in turn fixed my Repair Disk problem, so I'm all set.

  • Problem with permissions after NOT installing 10.5.3

A few weeks ago when Software Update asked me if I wanted to install 10.5.3 I said no, since I wanted to wait for a while to see if there were any problems first before I went ahead with it. According to Software Update, 10.5.3 has been downloaded on my computer, but not installed, although I can't find it anywhere.
Ever since then things have been getting increasingly weird. I thought I had most of the problems solved after booting from the Leopard disk and repairing ACLs and permissions. However, after I shut my computer down for the night, and rebooted the next morning, all my problems were back and a few new ones. Now I have to log in each time I reboot the computer. I have to log in each time I open Mail. I can't unlock anything. I click the lock and nothing happens. Time Machine has stopped working again and is no longer backing up my data. When I click on "Get Info" for my HDs or apps, Sharing and Permissions says I have custom access - all the rest is greyed out, and I can't unlock anything. I seem to have lost permission to make any changes! Very frustrating!
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, I can access the Time Machine application.
Following up on your previous suggestion, even though I'm listed as admin in the Accounts pane, I thought it was worth a shot, so I followed the steps set out in the Apple article TS1278: "Mac OS X 10.5: Administrator user changes to standard".
After booting from my Install DVD, and resetting the password for the System Administrator (root), I restarted from my Mac, selected "Other" in the login window, and tried to log in as System Administrator (root) with the password I'd chosen, but it wouldn't log me in. All that happened was the login window trembled a bit, then cleared, and that was that. I tried a number of times, with the same result. Do you have any idea what I can do to correct that? Because it sounded like the process described in this article could very well fix my permissions problems.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Disk Utility failing to repair permissions after 10.5.7

I have upgraded to 10.5.7 and now I am unable to repair disk permissions. I have tried using disk utility and that does not work. It says it has completed after less than a second, when it says that it will take several minutes to read the permissions database. I need the permissions repaired as Final Draft will not work at all with the current settings.
I have tried repairing from CD but my Superdrive does not recognise the install disk. My other machine shows it as readable. I think that I have a problem with the Superdrive and am dealing with that as well.
I have also tried TechTool Pro 5 and that did not work either. Any suggestions?

Firstly I never delete anything in the library folder. So nothing that I have done.
My Library/Receipts folder is very small, the actual db folder is less than 400 kb and none of the pkg's is older than 16th of May 2009, and all of them are for programs that I reinstalled since.
I can wipe the drive and reinstall Leopard and restore the data via Super Duper. Is that practical as a way of rebuilding the database? Or shall I reinstall applications? I can use Amnesia to clear everything if that helps.

  • Still having problems with insufficeint permissions - after clean install

I'm seeing this on multiple friends' computers, and now have it on mine.
An auto update fails with the error of insufficient permissions.  (I can't find how to post a screen shot of it.)
I read through several discussions, and ran the manual uninstaller, then checked for the files as denoted on the FAQ, and tried to run the installer after downloading it and still cannot get Flash Player installed due to insufficient permissions writing the files.
I am on Windows 7 64 bit(current patch level), IE(9.0.14), and have d/l the latest Adobe Flash Installer.
I know that at least 1 of my friends is on Windows 7 32 bit, IE, and whatever the latest Adobe Flash update is trying to install.
I am running on an Administer account while trying this.
When I was first asked for help I checked and know that my friend's account was Administration as well.  Last month I reran the flash installation file and used the "Run as Administrator" option from an administration account and the installed worked.  That did not fix the issue this time.  As stated above I have it on my system now and some other friends have it on theirs as well.
How can I fix the issue?  How can I make sure it doesn't come back when the next auto audate takes place?
    Edit addition:
An auto update kicked off and it failed too.  Here is the log at this point:
