"replace with after effect comp" problem

I started my project in Prelude where I mad subclips.  I then imported those subclips to premiere to edit my story.  Some of those subclips I would like to key or do other effects with in after effects, but I when I click on those clips and choose replace with after effects composition the clip that is opened in after effects does not have the same in and out points as the one in the premiere timeline.  it is from the same clip and is the same duration but it just always starts at the beginning of the master clip.  Is there something I am doing wrong or is there a better way to go about this?

Sorry, but something is definitely wrong with your workflow but not with the above.
When you select a clip or a group of clips in PrPro timeline and then choose 'Replace With After Effects Composition', AE creates and automatically opens a brand new composition, in which number of layers and their In and Out points correspond to a number of clips replaced with AE composition and their In and Out points in the PrPro Timeline accordingly (i.e. layers in that AE composition are appropriately trimmed and distributed in time).
See another one image, if you didn't notice that in the previous one the layer was trimmed:
So, the question is, what do you do to achieve what you see in AE, since you shouldn't do any extra steps to get correct result, 'cos AE opens that newly created composition automatically? Do you jump back to AE Project pan in an attempt to create a composition out of imported assets once again?

  • Replace with after effects composition problem, video dissapears

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a problem with premiere's cs5 "replace with after effects composition" command. Every time I try doing it I get just a new comp made in after effects but no files so the screen is just black without content.
Then the video in premiere dissapears too and the "file" in the timeline turns a pink color.
Any ideas about whats going on here? thanks in advance.

Grant, I did figure it out (and felt rather silly when I did). You have to select all your files from the Project portion of AE and drag them into the Render segment - bottom left corner of your AfterEffects screen - in order for them to play. I guess I should have come back to the forum and reported once I got it working, so everyone would know that there's nothing wrong with Adobe. Once you do that, there are all sorts of super-cool things you can do with a slide show for video presentation. I did decide to put it into Windows Media Play and convert to MPEG before uploading to the internet, however, because it reduced the size to roughly 15% of AVI. I preserved AVI for DVD because of quality, which is far better.

  • Error with "Replace wtih After Effects Comp"

When I use "Replace with After Effects Comp" on a clip in Premier CS5 (Mac), it sends the clip properly, I make my effect in AE (stabilize motion), save, then go back to premier and there is not change to the clip in premier (the change was clear and obvious in AE). In the lower right is a red circle wth an X -- clicking on it indicates "an unspecified error ocurred performaning an action" on the saved AE file.
The clip in Premier is marked red and indicates it is linked to the AE file, but the applied effect has not come through, it just looks like the original.
However, when I make other changes in AE, sich as adding text, no problem -- it updates in Premier.
What could be preventing "Replace with After Effects Comp" from workgin with AE stablizie image tracking files?
Using CS5 on a Mac (10.6.7) wiht the latest updater updates installed on all CS5 products)
    Really stuck here. Thanks!

Can I not render wihin AE and have the rendered clip automatically link into Premier?
This method should give you realtime playback of your Ae comp
in the Pr timeline, but you will still have to render first.
Use the "Post-Render Action" in the Ae render queue to import your
completed render into your Ae project, then drop it into your
composite as the top layer, solo that layer, then save and exit.
Open Pr, and you should be able to play the composite without
having to render the timeline... unless there is a deficit in the
horsepower of your rig as Jim suggested in an earlier post.

  • "Replace with after effects composition" on Premiere gives me a empty AE project...

I'm selecting and right clicking footage from my Premiere timeline, clicking "Replace with after effects composition", and getting a black, empty screen on After Effects.. There is no footage under Project in AE, and the footage I selected on Premiere also became black. .
I'm using the CS5 version of both programs, and video clips from my 7D... What could be wrong?

I am also having this problem.   It worked before but now it isn't   I did change to Windows 8 recently but I don't know why that would cause it.   Here are some pictures to show
Premiere Pro CC and AE CC both updated today, both restared today.  You can see the footage is there and PP is reading it.  It is an MPEG2 file.  easy.
Right Click on replace with after effect comp
AE opens up and I create a new project
Comp is blank.  No footage.  Lenght is correct though.
If I tab back to Premiere the footage is gone and shows only black.
    Please help.

  • 'replace with after effects composition'

hey guys, so when editing this one video in pr, I decided to color correct a couple clips in AE so I just right clicked them and chose replace with after effects composition, so it would nicely replace in the pr timeline with the corrected footage.
except when I finished the third one I looked back and realized the first two clips were replaced with the thrird clip! so that clip appeared 3 times in my video! I was trying to import the ae comps separately and everything but it kept thinking that they were the same clip, the ae projects were all named clip 1, clip 2 and clip 3, I could open them up in ae and they were fine, just not when bringing them to ae.
why is this? thats not supposed to be right?  I should be able to 'replace with after effects comp' for multiple clips if I want right?

  • "Replace with After Effects composition" in PP CS6 causes crash in AE CS6

    Hello,
When I right click on a movie-file in a Premiere Pro seqence and choose "Replace with After Effects composition" AF starts, it asks me what I want the file name to be, "save" this and go on. I can see the interface for a short while, then it crashes and closes. In PP I get the error "The importer reported a generic error"
I have the latest versions of both PP and AE, downloaded from Creative Cloud.
What can I do to solve this?
By the way - when clicking on an audio track, "Edit in Audition" is greyed out... Problems with Dynamic link?
    Regards,
    Håkan
    WIN7, 16 GB RAM Intel Core i7 920 @ 2,67GHz

    Fuzzy,
    I have now tried what you told me (and some more), without any success;
    - Cleared all the files in the named folders
    - reinstalled After Effects
    - deactivated and reactivated the suite
    Every time I try to:
    - right click a video file in PP and choose "replace with...."
    - copies a video file and pastes into AE...
    AE crashes.
When I copy into AE it works until I drag the clip to "New composition", then it crashes.
Hopefully you, or anyone else, have more suggestions. I really need some rain on this clip...:)
    UPDATE:
I have now tested with other footage, An MPEG-clip from my Sony (.m2ts) - this works well, both when I copy and paste, and when I use the "Replace..." within PP. The clip can be played in timeline without any problems.
Using the "Replace..." also works well "back in" PP - the effects are there when switching to PP.
However - when I add an XDCAM-HD 422 Movie (.MXF) file to this project it is ok, I can scratch (is that the correct english for using the mouse to "browse" the file in timeline?) this file in a comp, but as soon as I press "spacebar" to make it play "by itself", AE crashes.

    Håkan

  • Replace With After Effects Composition... What's the Point...???

    Hi...
So I have a timeline that I want to CC in AE....
I select all the clips and choose "Replace with After Effects Compostion"
PPRO correctly initiates an AE launch which then correctly makes a Composition with all my clips in it...
Now, ALL the clips, while there in the AE Comp, DONT have the clip names I gave them in the Timeline in PPRO.
They have the original clips names. Like MVI_9987.MOV which is totally misleading....
Why on earth would PPRO NOT adopt the names of the clips in the timeline to the after effects compostion ??
This is my major gripe with Adobe, you have so many GREAT and VERY Innovative but totally NON-Thought-Thru' features. It is killing me.
This here among so manu other things is what makes your CS Suite (Aside from Photoshop) a Pro-Sumer Solution....
A professional solution is NOT regarded professional because it has fancy features, it is regarded as such because the features it HAS have been WELL contemplated and integrated.
I hope your CS6 version is going to take care of all those small problems...
But then again, been having those hopes since CS4

The bit I do not understand is why the need to rename the Clips and how that becomes of value in either PPRO or AEFX (or Resolve or elsewhere).
Say YOU have to colorize my movie that I am currently cutting. The timeline consists of about 630 clips, derived from about 300 sources (Clips in Bin)
The clips in the bin have the original rush name... Thus BLABLA.mov... This way you can alsways go back and in time. Adobe has integrated something called METADATA and THAT should be use to describe scenes, shots etc.
That is why adobe made a BIG deal out of integrating Metadata..
Now, in above scenario let us assume that you CC in AfterEffects. I'll send you the project via overnight on  a hard drive, and tomorrow you open it either via Importing the Project into AE or by opening it in PPRO and hitting replace with AE comp.
You going to get 630 individual layers in the AE Com. The layer names are going to be derived from the source clips. So you are going to be looking at MAX 300 different names. YOU SHOULD be looking at 630 different names. But you are not.
AE will ignore the PPRO clipsnames and just generically name the layers by the source clip name.... Again... even if I had renamed all the source clips in the bins ONE source clip could be contain 7 differen subclips in the whole timeline.. ALL THOSE clips would share the same name... Thus nothing to do with it label..
So, now I have YOU on the phone, breathing down my neck, trying to communicate to me WHICH clip had THAT cool sunrise effect. I DID label it Sunrise... But PPRO and AE messed that up... So I go....
Hoooold On, Shooter..... Let me just open the timeline and count from left to right.... 1,2,3,4,5,6.... 459,,,, Ohhhh there it is... Clip number 459 from the left... Have fun Counting clips.
I hope you understand what I am saying, if not... OK...  at least then I can understand why you DONT understand -)   (No Disrespect Meant)
You make the following over dramatic claim about how fast your workflow is ....but to me, that would be slow and imprecise.
Based on your questions I can understand why you would feel that way.
I bet you are one of those guys thinking FCPx's event library sucks ;-)
Can you tell me how you name the clips in the workflow you describe here...?
I select the clip, hit ctrl-r (rename clip), give it a name and move on to the next...

  • Replace with after effects composition not bringing in media

When I replace a premiere clip with an after effects comp it creates a new composition but doesn't bring in the media.  Anyone have a answer?

I am having the same issue. When I "replace with after effects composition" it creates an AE comp but no media files transfer over.
I've been able to work around it but when I want to use a small clip from a long video file it's a big hassle to re-import the footage into AE and find the clip I need to mess with, then re-place back in premiere.
This problem occurs with any media, whether it's a JPEG image, a PSD file, or video footage (MOV format shot on a Canon DSLR).

  • How to undo the "replace with after effects composition" command?

    Hi,
I don't know if there is a better way, but i make my color corection in after effects with Color Finesse and i use this command: right click on clip and "replace with after effects composition" - that a good way but, the problem is when i wanna to undo this and to bring back my old clip from an AE Composition.
this is how my clip looks beforee
    and after
it works fi i use "undo" command, but after i save the project, and restart premiere, that command is gone.
my question: what can I do to bring back my old video?
    thanks.

You can try to go to one of the autosave versions and see if you can bring it back that way (if the history is cleared)...
    Seems a little extreme
If you still have the original source audio in your sequence, as your example shows, park the CTI at the beginning of clip instance and target just the audio track (i.e. deselect the video track). Hit the M key to match frame the original master clip, hit I to mark an in point, and then hold down the Alt key and drag the Video Only button from the Source Monitor to the AE comp item. The AE comp will be replaced with the original video and linked to the audio.
The upshot of all this is that, unless you make a duplicate before using the "Replace" command or undo immediately after doing so, there is no direct way to get back to the original footage.

  • Dynamic Link/ Replace with After Effects Composition between Premiere Pro CC to After Effects CC won't work. Says "importer reported a generic error"

Trying to use the "Replace with After Effects Composition" to use Warp Stabilizer on a clip and transfer it back into Premiere Pro CC. The action is not  "grayed out" it allows me to click it and it opens up After Effects, then asks to open a new composition, but it doesn't open up the clip for me to work on it.
Also is the Dynamic Link and Replace with After Effects Composition the same thing?
Ive watched several tutorials and read threads but I still don't understand who to fix my problem.
I have both CC versions of PP and AE, if that makes any difference.

You have not provided any system information, no details about your sequence settings, your footage and whatnot. Nobody can even guess what may be going on.

  • PP CS6 to AE CC 2014 (Replace with After Effects Composition)?

Hey guys, been a CS6 user for a little while now and don't require the complete CC subscription but really like working with AE. So I subscribed to Single App membership CC AE 2014. I launch PP CS6 chop some clips and send them to AE via Replace with After Effects Composition and in turn this dialog pops up stating "The importer reported a generic error" and them are the brakes. I uninstalled AE CS6 because when replacing a clip with a AE Comp AE CS6 launches. Are these two programmes not talking to each other? Like crippled.

Hey thanks cc_merchant, that doesn't come as a surprise to me, I guess I'm just a little disappointed by this on two levels, one this not having been mentioned or it is mentioned but well hidden and secondly that it's purposely crippled. That's business.

  • Version update and now "replace with after effects composition" is greyed out.

Hi, I've been working on a project for a while now (using Premiere Pro cc and After Effects cc).
Then CC 2014 came out. I installed those new Versions. To make sure that everything still works I've continued working with cc versions. Now if I want to "Replace with After Effects Composition" (in the premiere pro project opend in Version cc) it doesn't work since it's greyed out.
    Can somebody help me?

    Ok guys...I got it...
Its not a *mov that it missplaced, its another dynamic link to AE...so dynamic link to dynamic link seems not to work? I accidently linked that clip and worked on it in AE in the old aep from yesterday..but still wondern why AE get confused loading it...the "old aep comp" is full with others comp...could that be the reason...?

  • "Replace with After Effects Composition" broken now, too?

Does Replace with After Effects Composition actually work on 8.2, or did Adobe c**k that one up, too?
I've got an 8.2-native project in PPro (created from scratch in 8.2), I click on one or more of the clips on the timeline, choose "Replace with After Effects Composition", as I've always done with 8.0. AE opens up, and a new comp is created, but none of the media is ported over; I'm left with a blank comp/project in AE, and an AE project in my PPro timeline that's empty.
    *long, slow clap*

  • Replace with After Effects Composition fail

    Hi,
I've been working my way though the Adobe Classroom In A Book for Premier Pro CS6 (For anyone who has the book I'm on p.308).
The book simply describes the method of getting a clip into After Effects as right clicking the clip on the timeline and selecting the Replace with After Effects Composition option from the popup menu.
My problem is this option is grayed out.
Now, I do have Premier Pro and After Effects both installed from Adobes Creative Cloud. I was worndering if the issue was that After Effects is in the CC version and Premier Pro is the CS6 version. Not sure if this should create this type of problem though.
    Any ideas on this problem???
    Many thanks in advance.

    Thanks Jim.
After a swapout from CS to CC of PremPro and Bridge it all now works
