Reproducible bug - lost mail

With Apple Mail on 10.4.5, using an IMAP account with a WU IMAP server, folders can contain either mail or folders, but not both. This is allowed in the IMAP spec, and Mail handles this almost gracefully. However, I've noticed two bugs, one of which loses mail.
1) If you try to drag a mesage to a folder which is a container of folders (shows up in white & black, not shades of blue, in the folder bar), Mail will correctly refuse to drop the message into the folder. However, if you use the contextual menu "Move To", if will allow this. If you actually do it, it will delete the message in the source folder, and silently fail to create it in the destination, losing the message.
2) There does not appear to be any supported way to create folders that are containers of other folders, when working with IMAP servers (like WU's) as described above. You can, however, get around this by creating a folder named "whatever/". (This is obviously relying on OS- and daemon-specific behavior.) When it reports failure, go offline, then online, and the folder will appear. However, this workaround should not be necessary. The interface should offer an option to create the folder as a container of folders, directly.
I've submitted this as Bug ID# 4455387.

OK, I now appear to have the problem.
I installed OS X Server on my Mac Pro some weeks ago. One change I made was to setup the Calender Server to prepare for a move from my separate Snow Leopard Server. As part of setting the Calendar Server up it requires an e-mail address. This was set last last week.
It now appears that the Calendar Server pulls all e-mail from the e-mail address provided on the mail server, this is different (or it appears to be different) to the behaviour from Snow Leopard Server. The configuration for each is very different from the interfaces.
After turning off the Calender Server, it looks as if the mail is now staying on the server.

  • Reproducible bug in mail deleting IMAP INBOX messages

I have just installed Lion on my Mac Pro and am having problems with the Mail App.
I have been running my own mail server for the last eight years on a Linux box, Postfix, with IMAP on top. This has been reliable and pretty foolproof. It supports most of my family and has been running happily with Thunderbird (all versions), most Linux mail clients and all Apple Mail versions upto (but not including Lion Mail), two iPad's and my iPhone.
Nothing has changed on the mail server for the last few months.
After installing Lion, I configured mail to connect to the mail server as normal using IMAP. No difference in configuration to any other install.
Mail downloads all my folders as per normal and then downloads my INBOX. I run my INBOX with mail going back to the begining of the year so circa 1,200 messages.
Next thing is my INBOX is now empty, I haven't asked the Lion Mail app to delete the mail but it has. Odd.
I have a backup of the current mail and load that back in. Start up mail again in Lion and a couple of minutes later, deleted. Nothing in the trash folder, no warning at all.
I search the internet and finds this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3206902?start=0&tstart=0 which seems similar to my problem. I clear all my mail preferences out, I remove all the directories from the~/Library, restart Lion mail, re-enter my  and guess what, same behavior as before. I can copy mail into the INBOX and it's deleted, I can receive mail and it's deleted. No warning.
No rules are set up to delete any mail, I have no spam filter installed on Lion, I can sit and watch it just disappear. This problem does not occur on previous versions of Apple mail, e.g. Snow Leopard.
I have moved to Thunderbird for the moment to get around the problem.
Anybody else having the same problem?

  • Lost mail. Useless Backup

Hi everybody. I hope my english is good enough to make my point with this
Yesterday I found out that all my mail in the Inbox was gone. I don´t know how. However I had I backup and I use it to restore my lost mail. But when I opened Mail the next time, it syncked my computer mail withe the "lost" mail from the .mac server.
How am I supposed to get my lost mail back if it syncs the empty inbox from my .mac account??
I tried to usu the sync panel from the .mac preference panel, but i got the same result...
    Any suggestion?

    Hola Pablo!
How did you setup your .Mac account? Unless you chose POP as the account type, your mail isn't really stored locally, but on the server instead, so your backup might have no real content.
That said, if your settings in Preferences > Advanced for "Keep copies of messages for offline viewing" were "All messages and their attachments", Mail would have saved local copies of your mail on the server, and chances are that we might be able to salvage it. Try this:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Restore your mail data from the backup.
    3. Shut down your Internet connection to prevent Mail from synchronizing with the server.
    4. Launch Mail and see whether your mail is available while offline. If it is, create one or more custom mailbox folders (be sure to choose On My Mac as their location, not the .Mac server), and move all your mail from the .Mac mailboxes into the On My Mac mailboxes.
Sijmons: Although I often request crash reports to properly identify problems, they become available only as a result of a true crash (i.e. Mail quits unexpectedly). AFAIK, freezes and force quitting do not generate such reports -- and that makes them harder to troubleshoot.

  • Lost Mail in Smart Mailbox

I tried to edit a Smart Mailbox and lost all my mail in the smart mailbox when I hit the "-" to remove a double entry. The original entry remained and I added another entry and also I reentered the one I had removed. However, nothing now appears in that Smart Mailbox although there are message in the Inbox that meet the criteria.
Is there any way to recover my lost mail in the Smart Mailbox and how do I get the messages into it that are in Inbox?
    Thanks.

You didn't lose the mail by doing this, you understand. A Smart Mailbox is like Smart Folder in Finder. It just shows you all mail that matches a set of requirements.
At this point you just need to think it through and re-enter the Smart Mailbox requirements (being careful about the "that match ALL" and "that match ANY").

  • Lost Mail on Network User Accounts

This problem has happened several times and I am pretty sure it relates to using Network User accounts. We're running Tiger server and all user accounts are stored on the server. We are using POP mail that is hosted externally.
A user logs in to his account. There are unread messages and the user starts to read them and reply to email. An hour or two goes by and when the user tries to read an unread email, the email disappears in the list when clicked, along with all the emails that had been received or sent since the last time he had logged into his user account.
There is no trace of the lost mail in the library on the server. If this isn't weird enough, the incoming mail on the ISP host account when accessed by webmail, is either gone or when you try to read it disappears when clicked along with all mail back to the same time that is missing on the user account stored on the server.
This has happened on different users and from different workstations. The only constant appears to be that these accounts are stored in network user accounts.
We are planning to bring mail in-house and switch to IMAP. But would like to know if anyone else has ever seen this.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Bob

Having the same problem here. I think its to do with the network home having a different database file from the local home and when the background sync happens the local home database is being replaced by the network home.
There is nowhere to set that during a background sync the local home should always be considered the newest and be pushed to the network. Sounds like it should be logical, but it doesn't seem to work like that.
I have users complaining that there machines are ok when they start, they have mail arrive during the day and then disappear and their mail box reverts back to the state it was when they logged in.
There is also the problem that when they move they don't always get the latest version of their mail box.

  • Lost mail body and marked messages - Maverick Upgrade

I lost some message body (they are listed but have no content) and 15 out of 16 messages marked with a flag where not in the Marked Message Folder. That happened after upgrading to Maverick. I tried to replace only the Mail folder in the libraray with the old one from Time Capsule. Didn't work. Had to reinstall whole system.

i had lost mail body, this is how i fixed it:
hold option, click GO in the top bar (where the apple icon lives), go to library > Mail > V2
now here's where things may differ slightly, i lost the body of mails i had moved to my computer (on my mac), plus i'm using Gmail accounts, that being said, inside the mailboxes folder is where the local folders are and Mail decided to create duplicate folders of some of them so i had
    Clients.mbox (with some emails)
    Clients-2.mbox (with the missing ones)
i then moved the Clients-2.mbox to the desktop, went File > Import (in Mail) then selected Apple mail as the import type, selected the mbox folder on the desktop and imported them into mail at which stage i just moved them back in to the clients folder where they belong.
i still have an issue where the reply arrow (next to email subjects of replied emails) is linking to completely irrelevant emails, that is not good. unless apple fixes it asap i would recommend moving to another email program as the Mail dev team has not only dropped the ball but stabbed it repeatedly with a blunt rusty object.

  • Bug in Mail 2.1.1

there is a bug in mail, watched the screenshot:
    http://img217.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot159hu0.jpg

Do you have a .Mac account? Do you have .Mac synchronization of Mail data enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac? That would interfere with any attempt to get rid of potentially corrupt *.plist files...
BTW, you can make your life easier in these forums by going to System Preferences > International and moving English to the top of the list. The next time you launch Mail, it'll be all in English. You can then go back to the preferences panel and move your preferred language to the top again so that everything else is in that language.

  • A small but very irritating bug in Mail: after pressing the spacebar after typing an apostrophe in a word such as "we're", the cursor moves to the left i.e. backwards, and not to the right, effectively deleting a space and not creating one.

When composing an email in Mac Mail I've noticed a small but very irritating bug: pressing the spacebar after typing an apostrophe in a word, e.g. "we're", the cursor moves to the left i.e. backwards, and not to the right, effectively deleting a space and not creating one.
    Any ideas?

I just recreated this problem on my iMac (wired KB, no wireless KB) by changing Mail > Preferences > Composing > Spellcheck from "as I type" to "never". Then type a contraction ending in 're and the space bar causes the cursor to jump back as others have stated, to the spot 'r|e
Next, I went into System Preferences > Keyboard > Text, and turned off "use smart quotes" and the problem went away again.
From this point (smart quotes off, spell checking never), if I turn Smart Quotes ON, the problem returns.
The problem is dependent on the state of both settings.
The spacebar in Mail "works" if I have either of the following setting combinations:
Keyboard: smart quotes OFF, Mail: check spelling ANY SETTING
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: check spelling AS I TYPE
    Other combinations FAIL
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: Check spelling NEVER
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: Check Spelling WHEN I CLICK SEND
Looks to me like there's a bug in Mail > Preferences > Check spelling > NEVER and WHEN I CLICK SEND that interacts badly with Keyboard > Smart quotes ON.
    Thanks.

  • Bug report: Mail sends messages with empty bodies

Over the last year, I have experienced a particularly irritating bug in Mail.app at least a dozen times. I finally have a good idea as to what causes it.
The problem involves long email messages (often with attachments) that end up being sent with blank bodies (and no attachments). Even the copy in the "Sent" folder ends up blank, and several minutes or hours of work vanishes into thin air, not to be seen ever again.
I finally realized that this bug only occurs when sending mail through our work SMTP server while outside the work firewall, and only as a result of a certain sequence of events. Here is what happens:
When we connect to our work SMTP server from outside the local network and without going through the VPN, the SMTP server requires password authentication. If the current SMTP selection in Mail.app is the one that does not require authentication, the SMTP server rejects the message. At that point, Mail.app opens the email I am trying to send and brings up a modal dialog that says "Cannot send message using the server xxx.xxx -- The server response was: xxx@xxx relaying prohibited. You should authenticate first." The dialog also presents a drop-down list of SMTP server choices. I choose the password-authenticated version of the server and then click on "Use Selected Server" to send the message.
This works almost all the time, but on occasion it ends up sending a blank message! If I have a long email, particularly with attachments such as PDFs that are rendered in the body of the message, it takes a few seconds for the mail message to be rendered underneath the modal dialog box. Since I am used to this STMP rejection behavior, sometimes I am too fast to choose another STMP server from the list and click on "Use Selected Server" before the mail message is rendered on screen! The result, invariably, is a blank email message that gets sent.
I guess what is happening is that when the STMP server rejects the message and hands it back to Mail.app, the message gets copied into a buffer in order to be displayed on screen. Selecting another server and resending it immediately (before the message is copied into the buffer completely) causes the message body to get trashed.
I hope that this description is adequate for Apple QA folks to replicate and isolate the problem (and hopefully fix it). One solution (although not the most elegant one) would be to disable the "Use Selected Server" action until the message is copied into the buffer and rendered on screen.

This could be related to another bug reported here recently:
E-mail looses all images if mail server doesn't accept outgoing email...
You cannot count on Apple looking into this or even noticing it if you report it here, so I suggest you the same I suggested in the other thread, i.e. report it in one of the following places:

  • Bug in Mail: Plain-Text | Rich-Text-Mails

    Hi,
just found a bug in Mail (Mac OS X 10.6.2):
I am using a faxservice-provider, which sends my PDF-files to the transmitted fax-number.
This stopped working a few weeks ago, the recipients of my faxe just get blank pages.
I talked to the provider and they told me, that I was sending "Multi-Part-HTML"-mails, so their fax-software just sends the first part of the mail (some blank lines) and not the attached PDF-file.
So I checked a few thing and found the following bug:
Mail is set up to send mails only as "plain-text"-mails.
But if i send an email via the print-dialog ("send PDF per Mail") Mail creates a Rich-Text-mail. This also happens when using the "send PDF via Mail button" in Adobe Reader.
The created Mail is NOT a plain-text-mail!
Saving a PDF-file to the desktop and dragging the file to the Mail-Icon in the dock creates a "Plain-Text-File".
So you need to check the format of the Mail in the "Format-Menu". If you change the format at this place to "Plain-Text" everything is working fine.
Something in this Automator-workflow-script is working wrong. This workflow just has the order to create a new Mail with the PDF as attachment, so I can't change anything their. But the error must be founded in this script/workflow.
    Sven

And it's only a Gmail issue, not in, for example, Google Docs.

  • I lost mail smart folders on iMac after delete them on Mac Air

I lost mail smart folders on iMac after delete them on Mac Air with differents mail accounts.
I don't undestand, I have email accounts totally differents between iMac and Mac Air, I don't know if is an iCloud issue.
When I open Mail on Air I see a lot of smart folders I use on iMac and I thinked of a some old sync mismatch, so I deleted smart folders on Air.
Today when I turn on my iMac I see I lost ol my smart folders, but are differents computers, differents email accounts, one used for work the other at home (gmail).
Of course I have time machine backup but don't know how to restore smart folders.
Please help me, I don't want smart folders be synced beetween differents accounts
    I attach my iCloud settings...

I don't know the answer to your question, but smart folders do not actaually contain messages, just links to messages from other folders. So nothing has actually been lost. Once you recreate the smart folders, you'll see the same mail inside them that you did before.

hi! I have lost mail for a month and I want to ask you to restore it from the backup.

Nobody here can restore your email for you - we're just other Apple users like yourself.
Responsibility for backing up email is yours, so you'll have to restore it from your own backups.
