Reset Syst Prefs by deleting related ".plist" file-but no new one created

System Preferences was acting buggy (wouldn't open), so I deleted "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", to reset them. But even though Mac OS X should create a new one to replace it, there is still no system preferences file. How do I fix this?

I did, but it's still not working!
OK, then you need to look in your log files to see if anything strange is happening. The simplest way to look at log files is to use Console.
Open the Console application from /Applications/Utilities. It will default to showing the "console.log" and possibly the "system.log". Use the File menu if necessary to get both these logs open, and use the Broom to Clear both windows.
Now try to open System Preferences and see what appears in either of these windows. Copy and paste it here. That information in itself may be sufficient to see what is going on.
If you see a message saying "Crash report written to <pathname of crash.log>". Click on the "Logs" icon at the top left in the tool bar. Then, depending on the <pathname of crash.log> in your message, look under either ~/Library/Logs or /Library/Logs by clicking the disclosure triangle, then click the disclosure triangle for "CrashReporter".
Find the crash log corresponding to your message and select it. It will open at the end of the log. Look back for the last line of asterisks in the log, then post everything after that to the end of the log.

  • After updating os to 10.9.1can't open pdf files.  I get a message saying It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognise. I can still read older saved files but no new ones arriving by email.  Any help would be appreciated.

After updating os to OSX 10.9.1 I can't open any new pdf files.  I get a message saying It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognise. I can still read older saved files but no new ones arriving by email.  Also can't attach a pdf to an email to send out.  Any help would be appreciated.

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to print by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar may appear under the cursor. Click the printer icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • I get a message that my inbox is full, although I've deleted many old messages, but no new ones are coming in. Message says to delet old messages and compact fo

I haven't been able to find out what my quota is supposed to be. (There is a way to limit how many days I want messages to be held, but I've never used that.) I have several folders for messages, but when I tried to shift some of the messages to those, (messages that I had to save), I still got the "inbox is full" memo. The message also said that I could compact the inbox, but I don't know how to do that, either. I've always been pleased with Mozilla, but I need your good help!

Deleting messages only marks them for deletion and hides them. The space is not freed up until you compact the folder. You compact individual folders by right clicking the folder and selecting Compact Folder or you compact all folder by selecting Compact from the File menu.

  • Yesterday I updated logic pro and my IK Multimedia ARC system has disappeared from the plug in drop down window, how can I get it back, it appears on old files but not new ones

yesterday I updated logic pro, I have just discovered that my IK Multimedia ARC system has disappeared from the plug in drop down window, can anyone advise how I can get it back. It seems that old logic files where it was previously loaded still have the plug in live, but on a new project file it simply isn't there to select and activate.

Not sure about your issue. What did you update from and to? Is ARC still in the plugins/components folder?
I'm an ARC user too. I have it plugged in to Audio Hijack Pro which is set to hijack audio from Logic. This way ARC is after logic and you don't have to remember to bypass the plugin before you bounce.

  • Can I delete all .plist files?

Is it ok to delete all.plist files?

It's best to describe the problem, if you have one, in as much relevant detail as possible, rather than what you think is causing it or how you think it should be solved.

i had a message that shows my mail box is full, i have deleted all my file but unfortunatly it shows no change on the storage at all

Ditto on Clinton's suggestion using OmniDiskSweeper.  It is an excellent tool.
It may seem elementary, but do empty Trash.  Only then do you gain storage space.

  • How To Delet All Your Songs Then Put New Ones On !

    Ok, Well
I Didn't want all the songs that were on my ipod so i deleted them and then i put new ones in my music caorgy and i pluged my ipod for it to update and after it says ''DO NOT DISCONNECT'' i went in to music on my ipod and it's all my old songs are still there i tried and tried and now this ''DO NOT DISCONNECT'' has been there for a good 2 hours

The 'Do Not Disconnect' will remain on your iPod screen while iTuens can see it. All action needs to happen from iTunes. In iTunes, are you able to delete them? Have you tried changing your sync settings in Preferences?
You could also do a restore. That would wipe the iPod so you can start fresh.

On my iphone, when I get into Messages, I see a list of message thread names and at the top right is an icon with a square and pencil coming out of it.  If I tap it, I can begin composing a new message with having to deal with any others.
If on your screen you see one or more message "bubbles", then press the "Messages" button at the upper left to go back to the home page for messages.  There you can tap the compose icon.

  • TS3899 My iPhone will not send email. I deleted my acct. and reopened a new one. I rebooted my device. What else can I do?

My iPhone will not send mail. I deleted the acct. and opened a new one. I rebooted my phone too. I am at a loss as to what I should do next.

Sounds as if you have a POP email account. If that is the case, then deleting the account and adding it back deleted those folders. They will be recreated as needed. As soon as you send an email, the Send folder will be created. As soon as you delete an email the deleted folder will be created, and the same with saving an incomplete email will create the draft folder.

  • Deleting a .plist file

I have deleted my Carbonite account and there is still an annoying popup that keeps appearing on my desktop.  I logged in as root user and deleted all the carbonite files from system/library. There is still 2 .plist files in library/launchagents. Can I just throw them in the garbage or is there a different way I need to get rid of them? (I'm running 10.8.5)
    Thanks
    Cayleen

Plist files may be dragged to the trash to delete them.

  • MB Air won't let me sign in to iCloud from System Preferences. I reset Keychain Access and deleted Accounts plist. No problem signing in via web and on other Mac.

    Hi all.
I've just been given an Air. I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything (which didn't work very well: no Contacts transferred and the Air Contacts application can't even open manually transferred Contacts Archive .vcf).
Trying to transfer contacts led me to iCloud - I thought I could copy them from there. Then I discovered that I can't sign in to iCloud via System Preferences. I get two error messages. The most common one is 'you cannot sign in at this time'. I've tried every solution on the web: I reinstalled Yosemite. I reset Keychain Access. I deleted Accounts plist.
The other message I occasionally get is 'This is a valid Apple ID but not an iCloud account'. It is: I'm logged on fine on my MBP, iPhone and iPad.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance,
    Aida

So - I have been having this same issue, and while it's not totally resolved for me, I have figured out what's causing it.  I am running a machine with two hard drives and to keep my documents on a separate drive from the OS/Applications, I used the Advanced Option to specify the location of my home drive for my user account under "Users & Groups".  I've found that if I reset this to the default path of /Macintosh HD/Users/{username}, that it works fine.  However Apple has a bug in that this functionality breaks when you specify your own home directory.  Hopefully, this will be addressed in an update.

  • User profile corrupt-ish after mass deletion of ".plist" files

    Here's my problem:
I had two sequential hard locks due to World of Warcraft on my Macbook Pro. After the second reboot, certain applications in the iLife suite (notably iCal and Safari) and certain 3rd party applications (such as Newsfire) would crash a few seconds after opening with an "application crashed unexpectedly" error. Note that these applications seem to respond and work fine for 3-5 seconds after launching, then crash inexplicably.
Being a mac noob and misreading technical help, I proceeded to delete all of the .plist files from my user>library>preferences folder. The only thing this succeeded in doing is reducing my profile back to its "factory" state, loosing all system settings and preferences. Oops.
I have verified/repaired my disk and permissions through Disk Utility and used Cocktail to clear my caches to no avail.
Now, I would just trash this user profile for another but I have no decent way to backup my iLife content and would like to avoid having to trudge down that path if at all possible.
I've browsed these forums for a solution, but so far fruitlessly. I'm working on a dissertation for school and desperately need a stable system to work on, so any help you guys could provide would be immensely valuable. Thanks!

The solution was to rename my Library folder to "Library.old" -- not optimal, but it fixed the problem.
