Resizing Layers in a Job

I can not resize my pictures once i insert them into my job nor can I resize my text box.  Can someone help me with this please?

try free transform or transform for resizing the photos.
see how my photo is on a new layer, and edit>free transform allows for resizing. you can also go to image>image size and manually resize  it. make sure you have the right layer selected.
for text:
make sure you have the text layer selected, and the text tool to resize the text manually. Resize it by altering the handles surrounding the text.

  • Complex question on resizing, layers, and digitizing from scans

    Hi,
I purchased acrobat pro to help me compile my research documents - scans, photos of archival document pages, book copies, etc. - into clean and efficient pdfs. For instance, I buy an ethnography in hardcopy, I jot notes in the margins, and then scan the entire book. (I do not buy ebooks because I don't get the satisfaction of writing in the margins, so this is not an option.) When I scan the book, I will try NOT to OCR my margin notes, as this often bloats the document; having an image of them is fine enough. I then have a digital version of the source I can access from the cloud, make digital notes, extract some lines of text to cite, etc. (I have posted elsewhere of the problem I experience on a Mac using the Preview or Skim apps.)
With these things in mind, the issue I am having is how to resize a single page or pages of a large (460 pp.) document. This might be the perfectionist in me, but it drives me crazy when I have scanned pages that are 8 x 12.50 inches, 7.99 x 12.15 inches, 7.86 x 12.45 inches, and 8.03 x 12.43 inches (and my hunches tell me that whatever app the document is viewed on, whether on an iphone, laptop, etc., it makes the machine work a little harder to present visually a non-standardized document). For me, at least, such documents are also jittery when scrolling in Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Reader. One would intuitively think that the "Reflow" tool would magically fix this, that it would magically make the text and/or images fit a standard page size, but alas it doesn't.
I've tried to follow some of the discussions online, but I've found them either not pertinent to Acrobat XI or not really speaking to my issue since I am NOT trying to print a 460 pp. document just to re-scan it. So I have tried to go into crop and change the page sizes to custom, this doesn't work. When doing this, I notice that the page image changes sizes and position, but the embedded text remains the same size and stays in the same position - so the two somehow get unsynced in size and position. Weird. Perhaps this is an issue I can resolve by re-running OCR or just making sure that I create the pdfs as an "searchable image, exact?" This could take much time and effort, so advice on this particular item would be helpful.
Additionally, let me give some more background about this specific file giving me grief. I have one page that I had to insert from a digital pdf obtained from my library. (My hardcopy page has way too much scribbling to OCR properly.) For anyone who has university access to digital ebooks, you will know the library allows you to "Print" a given sample of pages, usually a max of 50-60 pp. When these pages go to "Print," you can save them as pdf. Either way, the technology used puts a header and footer on each page, usually with the date, time, website source, loggin info, etc. 1st question: when this happens, are different "layers" produced (i.e. a flat and large white sheet w/ header and footer being a background "layer" while the text or page image is another layer on top of it)? Can someone help me better understand this process so that I can manipulate the elements better? 2nd question: I have tried to delete the image of this large white header/footer "layer" (as I'm calling it). Apparently it gets cropped out of view fine. But the damn thing is still there - can't I remove that "layer" and simply resize the second "layer" of the text image to fit the size of the pages before and after? And can I do it without having the text image and the embedded fonts un-sync? That seems like a simple request!
Many thanks for any input. This is likely the first in a series of posts to help me standardize my use of Acrobat Pro and my workflow! I can provide a copy of the page (extracted, if you wish) in question.

If you are on a campus network, I would not network attach your hard drive unless you either plan on sharing the data on it or setup some sort of firewall.
The easiest way to do what you want would be to:
    1) Get a normal home wireless router and attach it to the campus lan (check your campus computer policy to make sure you won't get shot for this)
    2) Configure the router to do 'DHCP' on the WAN side (that will be towards the campus lan and act just like if it were the PC you have attached now).
    3) Configure wireless on the router and ensure it is secured (WPA Personal encryption with a decent key)
    4) Attach both your computers to the router either by wireless or wired. They will now have '192.168.x.x' addresses more than likely rather than the campus IPs since that is now on your routers WAN.
    5) Enable File Sharing and Printer Sharing on the mac mini.
    6) Under Security on the mac mini, you should probably turn on your firewall as well if it isn't already. There should be a hole poked in it for file/printer sharing already.
    7) You should now see the mini from your other system under Finder since you're on the same network. If you can't, hit Option-K and type in 'afp://192.168.x.x/' where x.x is replaced with the IP address of your mini.
... and that should be it. From there, it's just a matter of adding printers, etc. which you should be able to do once you are connected fairly easily.

  • Trouble resizing layers to specific dimensions

Hello. I am using PSE 5 and I am trying to make an 11 x 8.5 brochure for my business, which will have a mixture of text and pictures. What I want to do is place four pictures in the brochure but the pictures, when dragged in, cover the whole brochure. I want to be able to resize each picture (layer) to 3 wide while constraining the height to 2.25.
Currently I can resize each layer by dragging one of the rectangular markers located around the active layer, but the scale is not preserved. I have looked in my PSE 5 help file, Adobes online help and Google to no avail. One site said hold the Shift key when resizing a layer to constrain its proportions, but this did not work for me.
When modifying a picture in a Microsoft Word document, the size can easily be modified by right clicking on the image and selecting «Format Picture» followed by clicking on the «Size» tab. Is there a similar feature is PSE 5?
    Thank you

    Dennis,
This program does not work the way MS Word does, and it may be easier to make a brochure with Word or a print shop program. However, one can make an artful collage in Elements.
    1. It is desirable to have the resolution of the canvas and of the individual pictures the same. One can check the resolution in Image>resize>image size for each picture file, then resize as necessary
    2. File>new>blank file will allow one to open a blank file in accordance with the dimensions (11x8.5")which you require. The resolution can be specified in this dialog as well. For printing, it is desirable to have a resolution of 240-300px/in. Create such a blank file.
    3. This blank file will be the background layer, as seen in the layers palette
    4. Open a picture file. Go to Select>all, then Edit>copy. Make the background layer active (the one from step #2), go to Edit>paste. This will place the picture on its own layer
    5. Access the move tool, and resize the picture utilizing one of the corner handles.
    6. Repeat for each picture.
    7. Text will be on its own layer as well
    8. 3x2.25" dimensions are unique, and I would crop each picture to this specification before step #4 above. With care, you may have minimal distortion.
    HTH,
    Ken

  • How do I resize layers in trial version?

I have created a collage and would like to resize some of the photos/layers. I have been alternating working on this at my friend's using Photoshop 7 (because she's teaching me Photoshop), but it is not the same and I have not been able to find how to resize the photos. Moving and renaming layers I figured out. How do you resize please :-)
    Thank you!

Ctrl-t on windows and command-t on mac. This is the free transform tool (It will do everything the normal tranform tools will do). You will also find it in the edit menu. Just below that is transform menu which is dedicated scale, skew, rotate, etc. These tools work on a per selected layer(s) basis.

  • CS6 resizing layered.ai files question

I have a client who has a set of .ai files they need resized to meet various epub layout specs. Apple and Kindle both are different sizes so I need to know the best way to resize an .ai file 11.25 x 5.65 inches into a smaller dimension in pixels while retaining the layers.

    RD

In my view, Post #1 contains the right answer:
First work out the percentage adjustment - 10% reduction, 30% reduction, 120% enlargement... whatever is needed.
Then select all and double click the Scale Tool. Insert the percentage in the Uniform field and click OK. The layer stacking should not be altered.
    But your reply includes:
Again, If I use the scale tool and change the artboard size...
    And again in Post #4:
if I choose the artboard tool and scale
Is it possible you're just choosing the wrong tool?
    Per Post #1:
    1. Figure out the desired scale percentage.
    2. Select All (That's all the artwork. Be sure no layers or objects are locked.)
    3. Double-click the Scale Tool. This will bring up the Scale dialog box.
    4. Enter the percentage in the Uniform field of Scale dialog box. (This will scale the artwork, not the artboard.)
From the information you've already shared your artwork will now be larger than your artboard, which will effectively "crop" it to the artboard's dimensions on export. Now you can use the Artboard Tool to adjust that.

  • What is the best way to move and resize layers?

When I click on a layer to move and resize it in Elements 8 in Windows 7, it disappears.  After I go to Edit/Undo, it reappears.  What should I do?

I have PSEv.8 and Windows 7, and the Editor works like a charm for me.
    Try the following:
Open picture 1, duplicate the background layer.
Open picture 2, make a selection of something in the picture with one of the selection tools, and then go to Edit>copy. This puts the selection on the clipboard.
Go back to to picture 1, go to Edit>paste, and the selection will be on its own layer
Use the move tool to position and resize the selection.
The middle layer can be dragged to the top. Here, this process will obscure visibility of Layer 1, but you can drag the layer structure back, of course.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1D3wrzjD5r24U8LfdTA1sdUb0zJOY0
I opened a picture of the house on the lake, copied/pasted the "Slick Rock Divide" sign as per above. The layer structure is represented in the print screen.
You should note that it is best if the resolution of the picture files is the same, or close to it.

  • Resize layers palette in cs3

In cs2, you could click a button at the top left of the layers palette and the palette would shrink or expand to show exactly all the layers in the image with no extra room. Is there a way to do that in cs3 without dragging the lower right corner; just by clicking somewhere?

Well, that collapses the whole palette down to just the top part, or restores it to the size it was. Before, if you had a lot of layers and deleted some of them, you could shrink the palette to just the right size with one click.

  • Resizing questions

I have my own large format printer which accepts 54" wide rolls of media. I plan on printing a number of photos on canvas, and am wondering about a few things:
    - If I wish to make a 40" x 30" print, what is the correct way to re-size the image in PhotoShop (CS6)? Out of my camera, the images are 4592 x 3448 px, so do I simply punch in 40" x 30" in the "Image Size" menu, and then select "Bicubic Smoother (for enlargement)"? (see attached image).  Or should I just re-size the image in the RIP software?
    - Some of the images were shot in Raw, but some as JPG. For the ones that were shot Raw, should I also save them as JPGs before printing, or is TIF better? My RIP will handle JPG, TIF, PDF, EPS.

regarding resizing, there are various upresizing applications out there, but none that do a great job IMO.  Photoshop CC (due out 17th June) has what looks to be an excellent upsizing tool, but we need to try it for ourselves before deciding for sure how good it is.  As it stands, you'd be printing at 115dpi which is not a total disaster, because no one is going to be getting up close to a 30x40 inch print.  So go with what you have now; wait till the 17th and either invest in a CC subscription (or ask some one nicely to up size it for you).  Of the apps currently available, On-One's Perfect Resize does an OK job.  You could maybe download the trial version, but I don't know if it is fully fnctional.
Regards saving in a different format, I would gennerally tend to print the processed RAW file before I saved it, or save as a PSD.  For the JPGs if you are going to do some processing and print later, then probably save as TIFF or PSD.

  • Portrait Photo Album not available in v10

I'm beginning to wish I had not bought this software.  I want to create a portrait orientated photo album but only landscape and square options are available. SQUARE?  Who the heck would print a square album?
From searching the forum on this subject I see folks wanting this 6 years ago so Adobe have no intention of adding a portrait option to Photo Album.  Add this to the no 'sort by name' in Organizer and I wonder how Elements 10 gets the ratings it does.
    Very disillusioned.
    John

    John,
One of the big advantages of PSE over many competitors is that you can take advantage of layers and layer masks. That's even a big plus over Lightroom, and the reason why many LR users also use Elements as a pixel editor after the main edits have been made in LR.
Creating a book is creating composite pages including various images and texts and finally providing the resulting pages in a format compatible with your printing provider or your home printer.
A photo book is not very different to any other illustrated book made by layout softwares such as Quark Express, InDesign or Scribus : the main accent is on the photos, less on the text. It is very common to provide either jpegs or pdfs to your provider.
Most of the providers I am working with in France call for jpegs. I am also very happy with viovio in the States, they can take either jpegs or pdfs. You'll also find a lot of info about making books and a variety of templates for layouts. What you'll notice is that most providers on the Web offer a wide choice of templates to create pleasant layouts. What you can do with the 'create' option in PSE cal also be done with most other suppliers. And you can create your own layouts with the normal 'full edit' view in PSE rather than the 'create' assistant.
Here are common steps when I am creating a book:
    - writing a kind of scenario to have an idea of the different parts of the book and its number of pages
    - using the Organizer to select the files, tagging, rating and finally creating one or several albums to help creating the pages
    - searching files to create 'backgrounds' on which pictures and text will be superimposed. In this phase I may use gradients, textures, shapes...
    - Composing pages is made by adding each picture or text element as individual layers, which you can resize and move at any time. You may use a variety of templates for this, but I prefer more freedom in the way I compose the page.
    - Using layer styles like drop shadows for different layers, adding text effects (bevels...)
    - saving each page as psd to keep all layers until the job is finished
    - Depending on your provider's requirements, upload all your jpeg pages, or upload a multipage pdf.

  • Constrain proportions in PS CS6

    Hi
I resently went from PSE to PS. I was wondering if it was possible to change the default way the proportions work, when you drag a corner of a layer.
In PSE the default is that the proportions are constraint, but in PS you need to hold down shift to to do this.
Is it possible to change the default in PS to the same default as PSE?
Trying to figure the same out for AI - have been through the settings but could not find anything.
    Thanks.
    Ulf

    Thanks
I can do this, but I would like to do it for the move tool where I resize layers and selections. I can find a way to do it when I have an area selected like this:
I works but as soon as I close and open PS the default is non-proportional again.

  • Setting up for commercial printing

I use Illustrator as my layout program for cards, which include text and photos.
I need to set up a job with a "clear foil" for printing. My contact's email says:
"will  be printed on matt paper and then add clear foil to the photo area" "we  ask that you provide the clear foil as a layered file"
This job has a very tight deadline and no time to discuss with the printer ahead of time.
Can someone help and explain how this needs to be set up?

It sounds like you're talking about the project being foil-stamped using a clear foil. If so, the printer simply needs to be able to print a solid image in the shape of the foil stamp.
That is customarily accomplished by using a spot color to fill the paths which will define the shape of the foil stamp. For example, you can simply define a Spot Color Swatch named "ClearFoil", draw the shapes that will be foil stamped, apply that Swatch to those objects, and set their fills to overprint.
Although it is a commonly-used organizational convenience to put those object(s) on a separate layer, it is not strictly necessary to do so. (This seems to be a recurring misconception in this forum lately that Layers are somehow linked to color separation.) What matters is which objects print to individual color separations (inks). That has nothing to do with which Layers those objects are on.
But in the case of things like foil stamps, varnishes, or die-cuts, it is usually sensible and convenient to put those objects on their own named Layer. (For example, name the Layer "Foil Stamp".) That's just a clear way to communicate the purpose, and it also makes it easy for the recipient to just turn on/off visibility of that layer when viewing the underlying artwork.

  • Indesign CS4 links missing on document reopen

I have several files that keep loosing their links every day. Links reside on same computer as layouts and are not being moved. I open, have to relink. They will stay linked for the day, but tomorrow I will have to go through the same process updating to folders. Is this a memory problem? There are a large number of images placed.
This has happened before several times but now it is very aggrivating because I have to pdf proof revisions every day.
    Anybody got any thoughts?

    Folder layers:
    User
         Current Jobs
              Job Folders
                   Layout Folder
                   Links Folder
I've had this happen with other jobs, but it wasn't that much of a nuisance because I wasn't making revisions and proofing back to client everyday. Unforttunately this time it will be about a 3 week project and its driving me nuts. I still appreciate any help, opinons, feedback. I will try moving it to my desktop later today when I'm working on it and post results tomorrow when I open again.... after 24 hours, will be the true test.

  • I want to change the color of these glasses to black

I haven't played around with photoshop in years but I'd like to get back into image manipulation. I want to change the color of the glasses to black. I want them to look like a regular black pair of ray bans wayfarers. I want it to look realistic. I also want to change the color of the lens along with the frame. For reference this is what a regular pair of ray ban wayfarers look like:
Please advise me on what to do. You don't have to get into complete basics for me but I will ask for more help if I have any further questions.

That would normally be very straight forward, but with the glasses being so bright, I found I had to have two hits at it.
What you would normally do is open a Hue Saturation layer > click on the hand icon and ten sample the glasses, which would target that colour range.  You might need to drag out the sliders on the hue rails at the bottom of the H/S Properties panel to get all the greens.  Then you would either drag the Hue slider if you wanted to change the colour, or in this case, move the saturation slider all the way to left.
That would remove the colour, so you'd then move the Lightness slider to the left to darken it towards full black, but it this case you are still left with a fairly bright grey.  So you need to select the glasses - I used Color range, followed by adding some Smoothing in Refine edge, and with that selection place, add a Curves layer.  Combining the Curves and Hue/Sat layers does the job.

  • IMac Late 2009 i7-2.8Ghz Poor Performance

My iMac Late 2009 seems to run very slowly after a clean install of OSX Mavericks. I am not sure that happened after the clean install. But now i have noticed it.
I am using mainly photoshop. Everything is sluggish. Moving or resizing layers.
Generally it runs very slow with everything.
The surprising fact is after i ran GeekBench.
The average score for 32-bit test is about 2000 for single-core and 7000 in multi-core
My results are: 700 for single-core and 3000 in multi-core.
Few users seem to have about the same results as me..
    My specs are:
    Late 2009 iMac
    intel i7 2.8Ghz
    12GB of Ram
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB with trim enabled (i upgraded my ssd after my old corsair 90GB ssd broke!!!)
    OSX Mavericks 10.9.3
You can see all the iMac Late 2009 i7 2.8Ghz results here.

    Do you have any suggestions?
    it drive me crazy!!
I am considering a clean install but i want to wait for the Yosemite release.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Background versus Watermark

What is the difference between adding a background or a watermark to a .PDF document header?  They both appear to be the same.  If so, why have two separate features?

They both have a similar dialog (and internally are both implemented using similar structures), but a Background is more limited. You can create Watermarks directly from text and have full control over their position - a Background is just a color or a graphics file loaded as a layer. That's why there are two tools.
While it's true you can place a Watermark behind the page content and make something that looks like a Background, logically it's not the same thing (just as you can put some text at the bottom of the page but it doesn't make it a real "footer").
You can only define one true Watermark and one Background per page, and often document authors want them to behave differently (for example the background may only show on screen but the watermark may only appear on printouts). These days the Background is used less often, as the software used to create PDF files (such as InDesign or Illustrator) is more than capable of exporting multi-layer PDF pages; but despite those layers doing the job of a Background or a Watermark they aren't defined the same way - which is why you can't edit them using the tools in Acrobat.
