Resolution & "save as" ? for online photo book
I am making an online photo book through Snapfish. When I am done editing my images using Elements, I go to resize and make it about a 4X6 size with a dpi of 200 or so and "save as" a Jpeg. When I go to Snapfish to put my album together, I sometimes get an error messages as I try to place an image into one of the slots in the photobook. It cautions that the image has low resolution and will not produce a good image when printed. Should I avoid making the image smaller, or should I leave it as is? Should I be saving to Jpeg format? What process do you use when resizing and saving for this situation or any print you're having made? Thanks.
Snapfish recommends a minimum of 1639 X 1233 pixels. I think I've made the mistake of downsizing my images to 4X6 instead of leaving them the original size. I know if I email I have to make the image smaller and also lower the ppi to 72. When you are editing an image to print to a standard 4X6, do you change the size of the image or leave it as is with a high resolution of 250 or more? Can I go back once an image has been reduced and try to make it larger? Or, will the image never return to the quality it once was?

Can I pay for a Photo Book using my iTunes account?
I'm trying to pay for a photo book using my iTunes account balance. The process seems to take me to a Credit Card input field only!
Greetings,
Not an iTunes Gift Card I'm afraid:
"iTunes gift certificates can be used to purchase movies, TV shows, music and music videos, as well as audiobooks from the iTunes Store." http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2737
For physical items from Apple you would want an "Apple Gift Card" (Which are only for physical items from the Apple Online Store): http://store.apple.com/us/personalize/apple?product=MA210LL/C

Is there a save function for online forms?
Hi, I've created an online form which requests quite a lot of information from those who it is sent to. Because of its size, I have made use of the skip logic rules to so that users can quickly skip sections that don't apply to them. Notwithstanding this, the form asks questions which users may need to reseach and come back to so it wouldbe really useful if the form had a save function. Does anyone know if such a function exists and if not, whether there are there imminent plans to develope one?
If not, regreattably I will have to try and find another solution for online information gather that has a save and return function.hi randy
I wholely support the request for a save feature for online forms, any idea of an ETA for this?
Also to expand on this- the ability to print the web form would be brillant.
a few options for the web forms submit to print, save.
Web forms after/before submission maybe to save as a pdf locally - which then could be printed out. -

Selecting pictures for Online Photo Processing Centers other than Kodak
How can I select photos for printing in Elements for online photo processing sites other than Kodak? Is there a simple way to do this in the Organizer? The online photo sites usually give me only a thumbnail view of the picture and I can't tell which is best.
The way I've been doing it is tagging photos in Elements as favorites, and then tabbing back and forth between Elements (to view the pictures) and online site (to find the name). There has to be a better way to do this!Choose your photos in the organizer and export them to a folder on your desktop, then upload from there.

How can i set the orientation for a photo book (horizontal or vertical)
how can i set the orientation for a photo book (horizontal or vertical)
I like a photo book vertical format and i cant findet!!That was quick! Although my earlier search turned up nothing, when I posted my question the system immediately gave me a list of previous questions among which I found the following answer:

Are JPEG 3504x2336 pixel pictures too high resolution for the photo books?
Hi,
I am done creating my photo book and I am ready to order, but I'd like to know if my pictures are too high resolution. They are professional wedding pictures so they are 7.4 mb each JPEG 3504x2336 pixel pictures. (Last time, I printed through MyPublisher but the pages with multiple pictures didn't turn out well and they said it was because the resolution was too high so when they compressed the file for the pages with multiple pictures it didn't turn out well.) Will I run into the same problem if I print directly through Iphoto?
If I do need to lower the resolution, how do I do it, given that I've aready created the book?
Thanks for any help you can give me!Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
When you order the book it will be compressed and a PDF will be created. That PDF is what gets uploaded to Apple (via Kodak) for printing. So the best way to check your book before ordering is to create a PDF, then inspect it. Chances are, what you see in your PDF is what you will get printed.
To do this, select your book and do File > Print. You'll get an "Assembling book" progress bar. That can take several minutes. When done, you get the Print Dialog box. Click the PDF button and choose "Save as PDF..." Choose a name and location for the file (the Desktop is convenient) and Save. Then switch to the Finder and open that PDF in Preview. You might select a page or two and do a test print yourself, to see if the quality looks good. The PDF saves you from having to print out the whole book yourself to check for errors.

Color profiles for I photo books
Is there a desired color profile to use for printing books with i photo
My images are currently adobe-rgb. jpegs brought in from CS
When I print the images thru CS they look great.
When i print them thru I photo book or the PDF they look very dark and muddy...and would assume the same of the book printing online.
any ideas on how to get the best print.
Is there a color profile availabe from the online book printers or are we just winging it
Also tried converting one page to S-RGB Still Muddy / dark thru i photo book
and PDF Print. And just fine thru CS
Any Ideas??
Thank youI guess I am going to throw caution to the wind and see what happens.
Only one way to find out, Right
Though I did go back and lighten my images. Also
Ran color synch utility, which fixed 11 corrupt color profiles.(none of the 11 profiles pertained to i photo)
I guess I am afraid to use pref setter,, to set the key embed color profile.
Confused as to what that means??? Does that mean that all my CS Adobe-RGB jpegs will keep their color profile???
Also implanted one image as an SRGB vs the rest which will all be AdobeRGB
Oddly my color management in CS is almost Flawless. Yet, get me out of CS and I am completely lost!!!! Complicated stuff
Toad, I did want to pass on that AdobeRGB 1998 is a much more robust color profile then SRGB especially when it come to printing on Epson. It might be worth experimenting with and if you really want to get into it there is also
Pro photo RGB which is Huge color space, but a beast to work with

Will report back on my book

Workflow for building Photo book Page in Photoshop & Lightroom
I am working on publishing a Photo Book using MyPublisher and will be laying out each page in Photoshop rather than using their templates.
I need advice on the best workflow for accomplishing this task--here are some details:
1. Images are Imported to Lightroom, are Flagged, and adjusted with Develop settings (Cropping, Basic Panel, Paintbrush etc.)
2. I do add some capture sharepening to the image in Lightroom (not much).
3. Use the EDIT IN Photoshop CS6 with 1 or more images from Lightroom as SMART OBJECTS.
4. In Photoshop, I am changing the Image Size (sometimes upsizing for full page spreads) and resolution (everything goes to 300 DPI).
5. Doing more intense Creative Sharpening for each image.
6. I am using a variety of custom actions to layout pages with 1, 2, or 3 images plus text. I create a new document that is sized for the entire page (11.08 x 14.08 @ 300dpi for Deluxe Hardcover). I fill the background page with a custom pattern simulating textured paper and then layout the images for either a Left or Right Hand page.
7. Saving page as a Photoshop File and re-importing into Lightroom
8. Publishing the Photoshop Files as JPEGS with Medium Sharpening for Glossy Paper
9. Importing the JPEG of the Page into My Publisher as a single image the sive of the entire page.I often use Photoshop to set photos in iPhoto books. I am not sure how Apple does the trimming of its books, but I have had no problems with edge trimming of pages whose photographs to go to the edge. There is no white to be seen. I haven't closely compared the original 11" x 8.5" photo with the one in the book, but generally the results look right.
In terms of working out the gutter for two page spreads for a 11" x 8.5" book size. I measured an existing book and found the physical page width to be 11" exactly. I measured the gutter to be 0.25". So that means using Photoshop to create the image size of 10.75" x 8.5". It seems to work okay.
Just interested if you have set a gutter, and if so, to what specification? -
How determine best initial setup (resolution, etc.) for printing photo
Have worked with older versions of photoshop, now working towards bettering overall skills, and using Photoshop CS4. Would like to ask about how to setup an image initially, when first click File > New
Typically will be "photoshopping" jpg images, from 12 mega-pixel camera, and want to print color photos at max resolution, at local photo printer. Am using Windows 7 PC, 64bit (maybe not relevant?). So question is… how do you know what to enter for settings.
Example. Working now on an image to print as a 16” x 20” photo, at whatever would be highest/best resolution. But don't want to create a massive file with overkill resolution that far exceeds what the original picture has in it. So, what would be best settings to fill in the blanks below? Thanks for any quick/direct insights, plus any basic articles that cover this...
File > New
Preset: Custom
Width: ___ in (16?)
Height: ___ in (20?)
Resolution ___ pixels/inch
Color Mode ___
Background Color ___Before we get into the specifics, I want to ask "why" you're doing File - New to work on photos (opposed to just File - Open).
Generally speaking, for doing photo or other editing you want to work at or higher than the pixel count you'll want to print at. Even with inkjet printers, there are actually visible differences right up to about 600 ppi, though most folks feel 300 ppi is sufficient for a good print. Somewhere on this forum I wrote up a post where I tested a highly detailed image printed at various ppi levels then examined the results critically with a loupe and took macro photos.
My recommendations / opinions:
I suggest rather than trying to manage ppi early in the process that instead you think in pixels. I've even changed my rulers to measure in Pixels by default, so my File - New menu shows me the pixel counts. Think in pixels while editing, but keep in mind your ultimate use for the image.
If you're just doing photo editing, and not trying, for example, to put together a collage or something, but looking to print one photo, here's a suggestion:
1. Open the image at the camera's native resolution or higher if your computer is powerful enough. What I mean by this is if you open a raw file through Camera Raw, consider choosing one of the upsampled resolutions. I open my Canon 40D files at 6144 x 4096 pixels, for example.
2. Do your photo editing at the pixel size at which you opened the image. In other words, don't do things that resample it.
3. Only consider resampling to match the needs for output. For example, if you're going to print the file, you may not need to resample at all - just let the printer driver do it and see how that works. But if you're going to publish on the web, you will probably want to downsample the image. But do this after you've saved your master file (if you're going to save a copy). Consider the downsampling preparation for output.
In your example, if I were prepping a photo for 16" x 20" output, I'd do this:
1. Open my raw file at 6144 x 4096 (the largest Camera Raw will emit) x 16 bits/channel. Some quick mental math says that the print ppi will work out to the vicinity of 300ish, which is good for an image that size.
2. I'd set the Image size of the smaller side in the Image Size dialog to 16" height WITHOUT resampling. The other side will show as 24", indicating the image will need to be cropped, I'd then crop to 20" on the longer side, again making sure not to resample.
3. I'd do my various editing steps without resampling, and sharpen near the end. The order of steps 2 and 3 isn't really important.
4. I'd then do File - Print.
The thing to do is if you're unsure of things, just try them and do test prints, and use your own judgment about what looks better. Don't assume you HAVE to do things a certain way because of what others say. You might just find a workflow that works for you and gives you dynamite results with your ways of working and your equipment and software.
Good luck.

How can you tell photo quality is good for large photo books
I want to make a large photo book (13 X 10) and I have a good quality camera, but how do I tell the photos are good enough to blow up to that size.
I want to make a large photo book (13 X 10) and I have a good quality camera, but how do I tell the photos are good enough to blow up to that size
With a bit of arithmetic. Check the pixel size of your photos.
To print a good quality book you will need at least 200 pixels per inch to get the necessary dpi in the printout.
So your photos should have a pixel size of at least 13 x 200 by 10 x 200 = 2600 x 2000 pixels.
Check the Info panel for the pixel sizes of your selected photos. -
I have been putting together a photo book. The program is not as intuitive as I had hoped and I have spent hours trying to fit my photos into the spaces they provide, but I am sticking to it. My problem is that I have been told by the program I have 54 pages but I don't need that many pages to get the pictures I want included. How do I delete some of the pages? Thank you for any hlep.
SCSilverfoxThank you LarryHN. So easy--- Just impossible when you don't know what buttons to push.
May I ask another question? Is it possible to add pictures to the cache of pictures to be added to the photo book without deleting the book and starting over? I have an album of pictures that I put together (60 years of pictures) and I am using that album as the selection of pictures to put in the book. I am having so much trouble fitting in the pictures I have selected in the spaces and sizes that pop up as available to me and there are so many more pictures I have that I now wish I had added to my album choices. I tried adding pictures to the source album but they don't seem to show up when I select pictures for the book. -
I can't process an order for a photo book.
I am trying to order a photo book. After compiling the book I get a message that my billing info has changed and needs to be approved. This has not happened on previous orders. I re-entered all billing info in the account but still get the same message. Any ideas?
The most common (and the one that got me) seems to be having used the grey palm tree for a back ground on one or more pages with out putting a background photo on it.
The grey palm tree in NOT a background on its own but a placeholder for a background photo - IF you have any pages with the grey palm tree as the background that do not have background photos, select a photo for it or change the background to a solid color one
I have to go through my book 5 times to find the errors I had made
I also suggest asking Apple to tell us which page at least is missing a photo - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
For more info on the different pages available for each theme see Liz Castro's iPhoto site - http://www.lizcastro.com/iphotobookthemes/
