Resolution to non-playing DVD problem?

It's been a while since I last dropped in here. Fortunately, I haven't had any problems! I was wondering if anyone ever figured out why so many people were having problems with DVD's that would play in their computers but not on DVD players. I may have an idea. I created a DVD project in iDVD 4.0 as a starting template. When I start a new project, I make a copy of the template and then proceed to modify it. Could this be the problem? In other words, could I get around the problem by deleting the template and creating a new template in iDVD 4.0.1 or iDVD 5? I was never able to get a playable DVD with either of these versions. Is there any chance this might work? It would be a bit of a pain to try it since I would have to upgrade the software and then reinstall the old version if there's a problem. But I will give it a try if anyone thinks it might work.
G5 + Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Your original message said " I was wondering if anyone ever figured out why so many people were having problems with DVD's that would play in their computers but not on DVD players."
My reply was to that 'observation'.
I've been burning DVDs with the all the iDVD versions almost from the start of DVD burning on the Mac and have been a participant in these forums for all of that period. The necessary second generation 'Superdrives' could write at a maximum of 2x. There were some problems with DVD player compatability (discs would play in a computer drive but not in a stand-alone DVD player) at that time that were resolved by changing the brand of media (not all brands of media have the same rate of burn-errors).
As DVD burners have increased in burn speed (4x, 8x and now 16x) we have seen a major increase in compatability problems on the forum which no longer can always be resolved by changing media brand. Higher speed burns create more burn-errors. Computer drives have the necessary error correction techniques to correct for these errors on playback. Consumer DVD players don't include the necessary error correction techniques to correct for these errors on playback because the stamped discs they are designed to play don't have these errors.
I have observed the problem on several different computers with several
different drives. I never have problems with iDVD 4.0. I am never able to get
a playable disc using 4.0.1 or greater. It also has nothing whatsoever to do
with the media.
If the DVD discs you produce can't be played in computer drives as well as consumer DVD players, yes, you have a different problem. However, that was not addressed in your original statement " I was wondering if anyone ever figured out why so many people were having problems with DVD's that would play in their computers but not on DVD players".

  • Corrupt safari and non playing dvd

    hey!!
    if someone could please help....
the first issue: my safari application is somehow corrupt. certain texts are reading as jumbled words. when i copy paste to ask others if they can read what i see, they read it just fine. other internet applications read same jumbled emails fine. is there a preff file i can trash that will ree-build itself? but i dont want to trash my bookmarks.
2nd issue: for some odd reason, my dvd player does not recognize dvd movies. i inserted a few titles and the screen said "dvd file not supported". the dvd player in my g4 powerbook laptop worked before. now it's not.
    any suggestions?
    thank!!

    Hi Kidane,
Any luck on your second issue yet, of the non-playing DVDs? I recently noticed the same problem with my PowerBook not recognizing two brand new region 1 ntsc dvds (which play just fine on an older G4 desktop with an older version of DVD Player). They both have the same unrecognized search cycle that repeats three times, then spits out the DVD. One regularly begins to spin as if to play, but quits after two seconds. I'd love a clue to the fix for this. I don't think the DVDs are faulty, but my superdrive must be. I hope we get an answer!
Edit: I should add, that both non-playable DVDs actually did play just once, after alot of persuasion. But apparently after one play, they won't play again. Neither one played on first insertion either.

  • Playing DVD problem's SKIPPING

I just tried to play a DVD I get allot of skipping. Do any of you have this problem? There is nothing wrong with the DVD it is store bought not a copy and plays well in my other computer (P4 pavilion). Any ideas

I notice the CPU usage, but have not yet considered it detrimental to the running of comp. As long as it leaves enough for my use, its OK. I would think the settings in one of the settings on the Device manager page, or maybe its the advanced page, set the amount of CPU priority given to various users. Don't know if its still available.
Not sure about media player, only tried it a couple of times, I think its been tampered with. Still to investigate that.

  • Playing DVD problems

    Hi all,
Have built a DVD with a first play track, which goes to a menu with two simple buttons. Button 1, the default button goes to the main film, button 2, to the "extras". I tested the DVD once burned and all seemed fine. Then as I stopped it, I just happened to hit play on the DVD players remote and it started into the "extras" automatically. I seriously do not want there to be a possibility of this happening, if it were to launch automatically, I would rather that it were the main film. I should add that this doesn't happen in simulation on DVDsp or in the Mac DVDplayer, only on my home unit. Also, the main film is a quicktime movie export whilst the "extras" are MPeg2 generated in compressor specifically for DVD.
    Help!!

Hmm, first off your main video is a MPEG-2 also. All video on DVDs are MPEG-2. If you bring in a QuickTime .mov file, then DVD SP converts the file for you (It is better to do the conversion yourself).
Ok, there isn't a lot you can do about this in DVD SP. One thing you can do is make sure your Main track is located higher up in the Outline than your Extras track.

  • What is a good media player to play DVD's besides iDVD, Quicktime and VLC? None of them let me play my DVD's?

Nothing will let me play real, store-bought DVD's? Is there any other options besides these 3?

If none of these are letting you play DVDs then you may have a hardware problem with your optical drive.  Also, have you changed the region code at any time?  If so, how many times have you changed it?  There's a limit, you can only change the region code of the optical drive a maximum of 5 times.

  • Help! Is non working DVD a replaceable decoder chip problem?

    Can anyone tell me why,
My 400Mhz G3 Pismo Powerbook from the M7572 series shows no DVD decoder chip hardware in the profiler, even though it shows the drive and says that it has a video DVD on the bottomside of the case?
When I install a DVD disc into the drive, the disk spins and the movie title disk shows up on the desktop, but won't play. There appears to be no DVD Player software installed either (except in OS 9).
To no avail, I tried playing a DVD in OS 9, because my OS 10.3 wasn't playing DVD's. CD's play just fine on both OS formats, but not DVD's. I've tried 2 different DVD drives only to receive the same results on both.
I think it is the decoder chip, because OS 9 says there is no DVD hardware, even though it shows the drive. Is there something that I need to purchase to replace/repair the DVD decoder chip?
If so, what part would it be? Or should I try to reinstall all OS software, both 9 (to original factory specs) and then 10?
Any clarity would be greatly appreciated.
A Little Fish in the BigMac Pond

    Little Fish,
Let's start with your most important issue at the moment...the Type 127 error. Please be specific if it has a minus in front, like (-127). There are a few different 127 errors and here they are:
    1. The -127 error is a problem with the directory structures of the hard
drive; this is the probable reason you cannot move it to the trash...the HD directory cannot properly handle it. Boot to your System Install CD > find the Utility's folder > run Disk First Aid > Repair. If it finds a problem it cannot fix, run Disk First Aid a couple of times.
This article describes using the Mac OS or System Install CD vs. the System Restore CDs.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=31204
    2. There is also a -127 Menu Manager Error that can be caused by a corrupted Apple Menu Options Prefs file, or by other software that modifies the way menus work.
    3. There is also a 127 error (no negative sign) and is related to the LaserWriter 8 printer driver. It usually pops up when a call is made to the driver and no printer has been specified in the Chooser. If you do not use this driver - simply disable it with extensions manager (or move it manually).
I would try the Disk First Aid first if it is a -127 (I would run Disk First Aid regardless) and see what you get. The bottom line is this: If a -127 directory error the DFA cannot repair, you need a robust utility like DiskWarrior for repairs, or reinitialize the HD and install a new OS 9.0.4. The HD has to be initialized...you cannot just install a new OS on top of what you already have.
I am sending this reply now in case you are waiting for me to respond, and will follow shortly with some other options.

My MacBook used to play DVDs. I've tried several that used to work on this computer, but none work now. How can I get my MacBook to play DVDs?

You might need to update the remote application. i know there was a bug when the 5.2 update was released that caused an issue with the remote app. Apple released an update the following day for the remote app.

  • Problem playing DVD

I have an instructional DVD that generates some errors when playing in my MacBook Pro. It plays fine on another machine, so I borrowed an external drive and burned a copy on my MBP.
Although I had to start it manually, the copy played fine for a while, but now it is a few months later, and when I try to play the copy I get repeated Media Not Supported messages, each time followed by the Start Over or Last Time dialogue. Then it will play just the audio.
If I keep trying, eventually it will mount (as name.cdr) and play, and once started it will play fine until I exit the DVD Player. Usually what happens is that I keep trying to open files on the copy until the DVD player crashes, and when it restarts the player it all works fine.
I'm a little fuzzy on the differences between the original DVD and the copy, and the correct procedure to start up the copy. But I don't understand why it is so much harder to get it going now than before.
    Any suggestions?

I'll confess it has been long enough I don't recall how I made the copy. What is the proper way to do this?
Note that the original DVD only had playback errors on the internal drive; it played without problems using an external drive, and this is the one I used as the source for the copy.
I just inserted a DVD and looked at it from a terminal and this is all it shows

No extension, just the name - and the DVD looks like a directory.
I have not used the built-in copier in a while - I use Toast which simply has a copy DVD mode.
Insert original DVD and select Copy. It makes a clone of the DVD. Naturally it cannot be protected.
DVDs are special in that they contain two folders - a video and an audio (which is rarely used) and if the Video_TS folder is not there or something is improper, it will not self-start. Inside the video folder are VOB files which are playable on their own, but the entire structure is complex if the DVD is to play normally.
Again, I think you essentially made a copy of the DVD as if it were a data DVD rather than a movie DVD.
If you use the built-in burner after making the image copy, there should be a burn option that has no extension, but is merely a copy of the original DVD which also has no extension. I switched to Toast because it works much more intuitively and never fails.

Get a lens cleaner disc. One with brushes and try that. CDs and DVDs use different lenses, so since CDs load and play, I strongly suspect a dirty lens.

Installed DRU840A in a Dell 8200. Can read & write DVD data discs OK.  Same for music cd's. But playing DVD produces checkerboard coloror red & green and basically a B&W image.  No problems in Device Manager. Set as Cable Select for my system.

  • Problems Playing DVD Au

    Hi There,
I've just got an Audigy 2 ZS for my setup and I'm having problems when playing DVD Audio.
The track will play perfectly fine for a few seconds, and then there will be some sqeaking/funny sound and the HDD light will light up...the position in seconds of the DVD audio player will also halt..until the track sound continues to play again, and the seconds will continue counting
this does lead to crashing of my system and it is the same for both the DVD audio disc, and when playing the sample DVD Audio file on the welcome menu
There are no problems with playback of AudioCD's, mp3's and no problems during a short test on World of Warcraft.
Has anyone experienced the same problems or know any work arounds? I have reinstalled the drivers on the cd twice already
my setup is Athlon XP 2700+
    Asus A7N8X-E Nforce2

How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
    1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:

  • Satellite A200 does not play DVDs won't play

I'm a first time user on this forum so hello to everyone.
My problem is that my (Vista-running) A200 Satellite will not play DVDs. When I try I get the following message: "Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings. Needless to say, I've played around with the relevant settings and there was no change to the situation. In a response posted at a different forum, someone suggested that I ditch Windows Media Player in favour of something better. I thought the alternative program he suggested would be free but it wasn't. Anyway, I've tried playing DVDs with other programs and got the same basic message. So it's not a Windows Media Player thing, it's a playing DVDs thing. Also, it doesn't matter if WMP isn't the BEST DVD player - I just want to play DVDs!! I've written to a Microsoft customer care helper person and they wrote back saying that it wasn't their problem. They consider it a "hardware matter". I don't buy that.
Just some history - I bought the computer second hand from a good friend. Now I can't remember ever playing a DVD on the computer, which slightly confuses things for the following reasons. Just after I bought the computer, which runs Vista, I installed MP3 player software that disagreed with the CD/DVD player drivers. This I think is a fairly common problem. That time Microsoft reps were happy to help me and told me to delete two key lines of the registry. That fixed the problem to some extent because now the drive a) existed again and b) could read and play CDs. But when I tried to play a DVD I got the above-mentioned message.
So like I say, as I don't remember ever even trying to play a DVD on the drive, I don't know whether or not the problems are related to the MP3 software clash problem, although it doesn't seem unlikely that they are related. Finally, the computer was less than a year old when I bought it and in every other respect it has been fine (Vista's intolerable sluggishness notwithstanding). Sadly the extended warranty has now run out so I hope it's not a hardware problem. The point is that since I've never even played a DVD on this thing, and it plays CDs with no problems (furthermore, the drive can READ DVDs, it can tell me all the chapters that are on a DVD and read files off it - it just won't play movies), I don't think it's hardware. I think there's some bug going on.
If anyone could shed any light on this matter, I would be eternally grateful!
    Regards
    Tom

Turns out that my confidence in Windows Media Player was misguided.
I wrote and said as much to the Microsoft rep who advised me to look elsewhere for advice.
I further told him that from now on, if I meet anyone with the same problem I will give them the advice with which I was originally provided - don't use Windows Media Player.
Heeding the rep's advice, I looked around on the website for the company that produced my DVD drive (Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA Device) and in other forums, I forget where I found the advice but this media player:
Videolan Media Player Downloadable for free at:
    http://www.videolan.org/
seems to play DVDs with no problems. I hope someone else might benefit from the information.
    Good luck to all
