Restore and Reinstall ????

hello everyone!
Wondering if you can guide me through this process.
I have tried a disk repair on my HD volume, without success of repair.
Therefore, I realize that I must do a complete restore rather than an archive install.
Is there a way to do a restore and then transfer all of my user settings and preferences from a backed-up hard drive (USB2 capable) so that I don't have to input internet/mail/airport settings (import from external hard drive)

I am not sure what you mean by I have tried a disk repair on my HD volume, without success of repair. Usually, if DU tells you that it found errors it cannot repair, it tells you that you have b-tree errors, overlapping extent allocation files, or something specific like that, and that Disk Utility cannot repair it. That is when you would turn to SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner for repair and replacement of directories. Re-installing is the avenue of last resort with Mac OS X. So before attempting to respond to the specific point of your question, I would like to know exactly what you found or didn't find with Disk Utility. Indeed, what led you to turn to DU in the first place.
Just to be sure we are on the same page, here are some directions for Repair Disk:
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Select language.
Go to Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior

Also check that the ports 5353 and 5354 (Bonjour (mDNSResponder), AirPlay, Home Sharing, Printer Discovery) are open on Windows Firewall.

Frozen login screen even after restore and reinstall

When I am starting my MacBook Pro 15" (Mid 2010) I often have a frozen login screen (where I enter my account password) and the only thing I can do is press for seconds the power button. I have already tried to reinstall MacOS X Lion and even a restore from my time machine back up but the problem still appears. Is there anyway to resolve this problem? And is it possible to erase everything and reinstall Lion ?

Yes a clean install will erase everything in your hard drive. Be aware you should have a clone backup (which I prefer) or a time machine backup so that the migration assistant can copy your user and all preferences.

Restart your computer while holding the option key. After the startup chime you will see your available boot volumes. Choose Recovery HD. (You might be able to start up with command-r to boot directly into the Recovery HD emergency partition, but I have found that only the most recent Macs will respond to this key combination.) Once boot is complete, look under the menu bar's Tools for Disk Utility. Start up Disk Utility, choose your main hard drive partition, and reformat to your heart's content.
You won't be able to perform certain partitioning tasks when booted this way, but you can do nearly everything that you could do if you were booted from an external device or optical disc.

If you don't have a copy of the install mac osx lion.app redownload again from the app store
Before doing this you should make a clone of your hard drive or have a time machine backup at hand, that is a very important step.
1. right click or control click on the lion install file and select show package contents.
2. Navigate to Contents>Shared Support
3. Inside there is an dmg image called InstallESD.dmg
4. Burn image to a blank DVD or usb stick with program of your choice (USB stick works faster while booting).
5. Restart holding option key
6. Select DVd or usb stick you just made.

Can't activate after system restore and reinstall

I recently installed adobe acrobat pro on my laptop, everything was working perfectly until I faced another unrelated issue that meant I needed to perform a system restore to a point before I had installed adobe acrobat.
After the system restore obviously my registry had been rolled back quite a bit and so I needed to reinstall acrobat. After reinstallation (downloaded the installer from the acrobat site on my acrobat.com account and let it install the same as last time) when I launch acrobat I get an error that my acrobat subscription cannot be validated.
This is the only PC I have installed acrobat on so it doesn't seem to make sense, even if it considered this to be a new installation then it should at least activate as my second installation.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

I am not familiar with the limitations on the subscription set, but you may have to contact Adobe and explain the issue. It may be they have to reset your activation or whatever is done with the subscription. Typically when you start, you would be asked to provide your ID that you used to purchase Acrobat.

Where does Firefox store my bookmarks and how can I retrieve them after reinstalling Firefox.I had to restore and reinstall Windows XP(32).

I have reteieved all my documents and settings and have recovered my E8 "Favorites" , but I can't find my FF bookmarks.

Bookmarks are stored in the '''places.sqite''' file in your Profile folder. Also, there are bookmark backup files in the \bookmarkbackups\ folder in your Profile folder.

I uninstalled and reinstalled and tried to restore my old profile, but I can't open Firefox, it says another copy is already open. How do I fix that?

I followed the steps to backup my profile and saved the file on my desktop. I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it. I tried to restore my profile by copying it to the "new profile" but it didn't work, my bookmarks etc did not come back. When I looked in the new profile my old one was there as a folder so I moved it out to the Profiles section. I now had 2 profiles. I deleted the new profile using the Profile manager, thinking the old one that was left would just take over. I then tried to open Firefox but it says
Close Firefox
A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time.
Where is this other copy? How do I close it?

Did you check the File > Work Offline setting?
Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

I updated StumbleUpon which offered a tool bar. Since then I get no URL line, including everything else normally on that line. I have uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled and still get the same. What can I do to correct this without doing a system restore

A Restore first downloads a new copy of iOS to your computer. On a slow Internet connection this can take a long time. How fast is your connection? How long would you expect it to take to download 900 MB?
That's assuming nothing is interfering with the download. Some firewalls and antivirus programs will block the download or slow it down. So you should temporarily disable your security software. Security software can also block the update after the iOS download is complete.

How do I get out of an iphone restoration loop, itunes keeps saying it has detected an iphone in restore mode and that it must check for software updates and reinstall the ios, it completes this process and then says: detected iphone in restore mode etc.,

Background: my iphone 3gs was running wonderfully - no issues at all, as normal.
I let the power run down to critical and got the empty battery screen - plugged it in and when it had enuf juice it displayed the cord-to-itunes-of-death-screen...

OMG at home I did the whole restore process no less than 20 times while optimizing and accounting for different variables each time (restoring on a new system with a fresh OS, trying to restore and a mac, restoring then restarting empty cache, restart unistall itunes then restore restart restore, installing an older version of Itunes and restoring. going back to Vista and restoring), and every single time it would complete the check, the update/check, the ios reinstall, and then whatever else and say "complete"... and then no icon menu would appear for the device in itunes so unplug the phone and replug and get the whole "Itunes must render restore aid" message. SO I went to the genuis bar at my local iBoutique thrice - each time the bewildered but very courteous and knowledgable genuis wanted to keep trying ... since I had been on this treadmill for about two weeks I decided each time to respect my fellow appletonians and not suck up genius time... but I really want my old 3gs back... why - I like that it amazes the youth who occaisonal are puzzled by seeing something apple that they don't recognize and in wonder and amazement at its age they learn that even though its no longer invited to iOS family gatherings that it still can call home and ask why Apple waited so long when it was a kid to give it copy-paste ability like all the other kids, then ask for money for the shrink bill.. ... . . ..

Soooooooo.... You obviously need to restore the device
It seems that you have tried several options to restore it. What I would do is leave it plugged it and hold down the Home button AND the Power button together till you see the white apple appears. Then let go of the Power button but continue to hold the home button. You should get the message in iTunes again saying that the iPhone needs to be restored. Hit OK then RESTORE.

You can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod. File>Transfer Purchases

Unable to restore from Time Machine after an erase and reinstall - MacbookPro cannot access my old Time Machine backup volume. Desperate for help please?

My MacbookPro would not move past the Apple logo and spinning wheel for a number of hours. After trying the numerous suggestions to solve the issue I eventually opted to erase and reinstall feeling confident my Time Machine backups would come to the rescue. After a successful erase and reinstall I tried to restore all my data from my TIme Capsule using Command-R during start up and by using the Migration Assistant. Neither worked and I have received messages to the effect that the backup volumes on my Time Capsule cannot be access because I have entered a wrong password or because the backup volume is damaged.
When I open my Time Capsule in Finder and click on my sparsebundle I get an eror message saying that the disk image could not be opened and that the resource is temporarily unavailable.
Desperate for some help and comfort that many years of personal data have not been lost.

Try 1 step at a time and do a backup, if no joy then do the next step:
1. Switching off your anti-virus and firewall.
2. Computer iTunes menu > Edit > Preferences... > Devices > delete your backup

I am running OS 10.5.8. Tried reinstalling, restoring, and resetting both with installation disc and without, but to no avail.
I recently upgraded from 1GB memory to 4 GB. It ran great for a couple of weeks, when I eventually powered it off, it would not come back. With installation disc, I did get to the utilities and tried repair and even reinstall original OS (several updates down from 10.5.8). At one point, I was able to restore a previous session, but it only lasted for about 3 days until I powered it off again, then back to square 1. I have verified the Macintosh HD disc and repaired it, I have reset everything I can find that might need resetting... Still nothing.
SO, is it toast, or is it possible to install OS 10.6 and get it to boot?

Erase the drive then install OS X:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If this doesn't work then the drive is probably bad or some of the new RAM you installed is marginally defective.

My iphone 5 is stuck in recovery mode. Followed apple support instructions...uninstalled and reinstalled all apple products. Not getting any error codes, just cord/tunes pic. Itunes is not recognizing my phone so I cant even restore. Pls help !

I just got this phone about 2 weeks ago. I was prompted to do an update and did it... then my phone showed the image of the wire to the itunes symbol... so it's in recovery mode. I have been working on this for hours! I read tons of apple support procedures and followed them to the letter.... HT1414, TS3125, TS1538 etc.
I uninstalled my itunes, quicktime... all the apple products like the instructions said. I reloaded everything and rechecked to make sure it was good. Driver is showing up good with no problems.
I would totally be fine with restoring it to the original settings... I've only had it for 2 weeks! But itunes won't even recognize the phone so I can't even hit the restore button. This is so frustrating. I am running windows 7... and I ran all updates like the apple support instructions said. I checked updates with Norton. All good. I did all the windows & norton updates before I uninstalled and reinstalled apple products. If I could only get itunes to even recognize the phone.
The phone is not jailbroken... it was fresh from the factory... then that update!

I may have fixed the issue. The errors in device manager were a driver error apparently windows didnt have appropriate drivers installed to allow itunes to recognize a device in recovery mode. I followed the paths in the guide above in more detail using this path ( http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 under if device not recognized while in recovery mode) to alleviate the issue update is now installing appropriately ( i hope).
I will update if everything works correctly
